Face Calipers

A single-page, browser-based tool that turns one photo into facial measurements, proportions, and a 3D mesh — calibrated off the iris (~11.7 mm, one of the only constant rulers on the face).

Live demo: https://baborub.github.io/face-calipers/

Runs 100% in your browser. Photos never leave your machine — no upload, no server.

What it does

  • Detects 478 facial landmarks (iris included) with MediaPipe Face Landmarker.
  • Manual iris calibration with a magnifier loupe → a real mm/px scale.
  • Anthropometric measurements (Farkas points) grouped by reliability tier, plus the classic proportion canons and canthal tilt.
  • Head-pose check that flags projective foreshortening above ~8°.
  • 3D inspector (three.js): point cloud, a surface reconstructed at runtime from MediaPipe's tessellation, tier-coded calipers, and a photo-aligned orthographic camera that overlays the mesh on the original frame pixel-for-pixel.
  • Export to OBJ / PLY (points + surface), CSV and JSON — metric, in meters for Houdini and other DCCs.

Honest about its limits

This is a reference aid for sculpting and lookdev, not a clinical or metrology instrument.

  • Absolute mm are honest only in the iris plane (Tier 1). Depth-dependent and convention-dependent measurements (Tier 3) need a quick visual check against the index overlay.
  • Depth (Z) from a single image is model-inferred, not scanned. Front-plane geometry is solid; relief is indicative.
  • Ratios and canons need no scale and are sturdier than absolute mm.

How to use

  1. Open a frontal, well-lit photo (longer focal length is better; close-up selfies distort).
  2. Drag the two markers onto the horizontal limbus edges (iris/sclera border) of one eye.
  3. Read the measurements; click a row to draw its caliper. Switch to 3D to orbit the mesh or align it back to the photo.
