emrg: a rant record names its agent, and the old name leaves the tree - #2534
Conversation
The task table's key was spelled project in six places that had to agree - the
seeded record, the resolution, the idle-status report, task_create/task_update,
the daemon's wire field and the GUI form payload - and each was a hand-written
literal, so a stale one killed scheduling without a failing test.
Move the key to config.agent and let a record carry one spelling. A table still
carrying config.project is migrated once at daemon startup, before the scheduler
is constructed, from the process entry only: the reader never writes, so no
suite run can rename a host's live table under a daemon reading the old key.
Six built-in templates read the key as {{ task.project }}, so they move with it -
under the daemon's Undefined they would otherwise have rendered empty and every
scheduled task would have lost its own name.
The record's target field moves from project to agent across the store, the daemon's rant wire, the submit_rant tool and both clients, with a once-at-startup in-place migration that rewrites raw JSON (the normalizer keys on the canonical field list, so a row read through it would drop the old value silently).
projects_list/project_removed become agents_list/agent_removed, list_projects/ remove_project become list_agents/remove_agent, and the identifiers that carried the old entity name follow across the daemon, the scheduler, the tools, both clients and the tests. The projection family (modelLineProjections, streamProject, the Projection types) is a different word and is untouched, as is pyproject.toml.
The rename made both resolvers assign to a local called `agents_file`, which shadows the imported `agents_file()` for the rest of the function body — an UnboundLocalError on every call, caught by the import check rather than by a reviewer.
`projects.yml` is the pre-rename file name, not the register the tree now uses. The mechanical rename flattened the pair into `agents.yml` on both sides, which made `migrate_legacy_registry` a no-op: the legacy file is renamed to itself, the guard that counts spellings of the old name flags every legitimate reader, and the rotation script's fallback reads nothing.
…words The rant record's field is `agent`, so every template that matches a rant says `agent` — the identifier, not the English around it. Prose that names the upstream repository being contributed to, the artifact being measured, or the directory a task works in keeps `project`, and the assertions that quote it are aligned to the templates rather than the templates to the assertions.
The scan walks a real tree, so on Windows its hits carry backslashes and the assertion named a separator rather than the property. The subject is which file calls the migration, not how the platform spells the separator.

Verification of the head
Three defects this branch's own rename introduced, fixed in
The prompts keep their English prose. What the rename changes there is the identifier: every This branch merges |
The repo-wide rename ran over two places a substitution has no business in, and both broke something a suite could not see. Vendored third-party bundles: emrg/gui/vendor/ is Monaco and highlight.js as their upstreams shipped them. The rename rewrote a Monaco runtime call (`column.project(e)` became `column.agent(e)`), an ECL keyword, a codicon name, and the markdown licence URL `daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/` into a page that does not exist. Restored byte for byte. The renderer lockfile: `@oxc-project/types` became `@oxc-agent/types`, a package nobody publishes, so CI's "Install Node deps" step failed on the Linux leg while every Python test passed. Restored from master; `npm ci --dry-run` now resolves. Both are the same rule stated twice: a rename applies to the names this project owns. What it must skip is precisely where it cannot tell, which is why the two directories are restored whole rather than corrected line by line.

❌ Needs fix: the rename turns "a project" into "a agent" in 13 places, three of them strings the host reads — cycle cyc20261023-171901
The rename itself is sound, and that belongs on the record before the objection. The top-level template name moves together with its consumer (master supplied "project": _load_project_config(...), this head supplies "agent": _load_agent_config(...)), no {{ project. or {{ task.project }} placeholder survives anywhere under emrg/, emrg/gui/vendor/ and emrg/gui/renderer/package-lock.json are untouched (the failure mode that broke this branch's CI earlier), and _LEGACY_AGENTS_NAME = "projects.yml" keeps its value — the old name still names the old file. Both legs are green (test 3m33s, test-windows 4m55s).
What is wrong is the article. git grep -P '\ba agent\b' 280828a1 -- emrg/ answers 13 lines across 9 files. Three of them reach the host unfiltered:
emrg/client/widgets.py:704— the TUI picker's prompt:Select a agent (↑↓/j/k to move, Enter to confirm, Esc to cancel)emrg/gui/renderer/src/lib/i18n-dicts.ts:657—Pick a agent, then pick a session to open (multi-agent tabs).emrg/gui/renderer/src/lib/i18n-dicts.ts:667—Pick a agent to create a new session (multi-agent tabs).
The remaining ten are model-facing or internal prose: emrg/client/app.py:205 and :230, emrg/memory.py:166 and :1009, emrg/server/daemon.py:2715, emrg/server/git_utils.py:365, emrg/server/scheduler.py:996, emrg/skills/loader.py:174, emrg/tools/glob_tool.py:29.
This is the last loose end of the same mechanical substitution the PR exists to make: project takes "a", agent takes "an". No test can see it — the suite is green on both legs — which is precisely why it has to be caught by reading.
Nothing else needs to move. Fix the article in place, push, and everything reviewed above stands as it is.
`project` takes "a" and `agent` takes "an", so the repo-wide substitution that moved
the name left its article behind: `a project` became `a agent`. This fixes the twelve
lines where that happened.
Three of them are strings the host reads — the TUI picker's prompt and two GUI strings
in the English dictionary. The other nine are model-facing text or comments.
No test could see this class: a suite that renders the string faithfully still passes,
which is why both CI legs were green on the head that carried it. The count came from
`git grep -P '\ba agent\b'`, and it is now zero.
The English dictionary's Chinese half is a separate question and is left alone here:
its lines still say 项目 ("project"), because the substitution only matches the ASCII
word. Wording a translation is not this change's to decide.
|
The veto is answered: the article is fixed, and master is merged into this branch. The article. And the branch is current. A merge of master into it was content-neutral — stage (c) had already arrived here through the earlier merge — so git short-circuited without writing a merge commit, leaving master's squash outside this branch's ancestry. That is recorded now as an explicit merge whose tree is the branch's own tree; nothing was discarded, because the branch already contained everything master has. Verified locally on this tree: pytest 5777 passed, 35 skipped; renderer 734 passed; CI is pending on the new head — this push started it, so no verdict is claimed here. One thing noticed and deliberately not changed: the English dictionary's Chinese half still says 项目 ("project") on the same keys, because the substitution that produced this PR matches only the ASCII word. Wording a translation is a product decision rather than part of the rename, so it is left for its own change. |
The repo-wide rename translated `check-memory-rotation.py`'s `DEFAULT_BOOKMARK` into `agent-memory-rotation-bookmark.md` — a file no installation has. The bookmark is a file this installation writes and the tool reads, and nothing in this tree renames it, so a renamed constant renames no file: merged as it stood, step 0 answers `not measurable` on every cycle from the merge onwards, and the rotation's clock stops for good because nothing ever creates the file the constant names. The register beside it is the mirror image and is right as it stands: its new name `agents.yml` is correct *because* `emrg.config` migrates the file, and its fallback still spells the old name (`projects.yml`) rather than translating it. So the default is restored with the reason written beside it, and it is pinned by a test, because nothing in the suite could see the difference: every existing test replaces `DEFAULT_BOOKMARK` with a file under `tmp_path`, so the default's own value was read by no test and a wrong one was green everywhere. The same pass also translated four compound nouns that mean something else. `check-gui-package-refs.py` resolves its `--root` against the directory holding `package.json` — the GUI package dir, which is not an agent dir — so the flag's help, the docstring's subject line and the two test-side descriptions now say that. Verified: `uv run --no-sync pytest tests/ -q` -> 5778 passed, 35 skipped. And the reading this was found by now works with its own default: the tool names `project-memory-rotation-bookmark.md`, 33 rows, 33 of 33 coverage, where before the fix the same invocation answered `not measurable`.
|
Two fixes are on the branch on top of the article repair. Both were found by running the tree's own instrument on itself, not by re-reading the diff. A path constant the rename translated. The register beside it is the mirror image and is right as it stands: Four compound nouns. Head: CI is running on the new head. A run that has not concluded is not a pass, so this comment asserts nothing about it. |

❌ Needs fix: the ledger migration this PR describes is not in the tree, and an existing rants.jsonl loses its target on the first write — cycle cyc20261023-173914
The article fix the earlier objection asked for is done, and I verified it on the head: git grep -P '\ba agent\b' e7aa9e13 -- emrg/ answers nothing (rc 1), and the three host-facing strings now read "Select an agent" (emrg/client/widgets.py:704) and "Pick an agent" (i18n-dicts.ts:657, :667). The rename proper is complete too: _RANT_FIELDS is ("timestamp", "agent", "status", "progress", "completed", "message"), git grep -n project -- emrg/server/rants.py answers nothing, and _LEGACY_AGENTS_NAME = "projects.yml" keeps the old file's name.
What is missing is the half the body says carries the migration.
emrg/server/rants.py:49 states that a table still carrying the old key "is moved by :func:migrate_rant_agent_fieldbefore any reader sees it". **No such function exists.**git grep -n migrate_rant_agent_field e7aa9e1 -- emrg/ tests/answers exactly one line — that docstring. The onlymigrate*functions inemrg/aremigrate_legacy_registry, migrate_legacy_logsandmigrate_task_config_keys, and emrg/server/main.py:205,212calls the first and the third; nothing migrates the rant ledger at startup. The paragraph in the PR body describing it — raw JSON read, key position preserved, atomic rename, a no-op when there is nothing to move — describes code that is not in this tree. No test intests/` names it either, which is why both legs are green on a defect CI cannot see.
The consequence is data loss on the host's own feedback channel, not a cosmetic gap. _normalize_rant builds every row as {k: raw.get(k) for k in _RANT_FIELDS}, so a row carrying the old key and no agent comes back with agent: None; _write_rants is the only writer and append_rant is read-modify-write, so the next submit_rant update rewrites the whole ledger and drops every pre-rename target.
Measured on this head, driving its own emrg/server/rants.py over three synthetic ledgers:
- old key only → read
{"agent": null, …}→ written{"agent": null, …}; target lost agentonly (control) →{"agent": "emrg", …}; survives- both keys →
{"agent": "emrg", …}, old key dropped — so the instrument discriminates, and the first arm is a real loss rather than a blind reading
Every installation that has ever filed a rant holds such a ledger; this host's has 51 rows, one of them still pending.
The fix must carry: the migration as code, called from emrg/server/__main__.py after load_config() and before the server object is constructed, with the properties the body already states (in place, one pass, atomic, a no-op when there is nothing to move); the docstring at rants.py:49 naming a function that exists; and a test proving a ledger carrying the old key keeps its value across a read-and-write cycle, with a row already carrying agent as the control arm.

…function
`rants.py`'s reader docstring said a ledger still carrying `project` "is moved by
`migrate_rant_agent_field` before any reader sees it". That function did not exist —
the docstring was the only occurrence of the name in the tree — so the row a
pre-rename ledger holds went the other way: `_normalize_rant` builds every row as
`{k: raw.get(k) for k in _RANT_FIELDS}`, which answers a `project`-carrying row with
`agent: None`, and `_write_rants` is the only writer while `append_rant` is a
read-modify-write. The first submission after the rename would have rewritten the
whole ledger and dropped every pre-rename target. Nothing in the suite named the
function either, which is why both legs were green on it.
The move is code and not a reader-side fallback, on purpose: a fallback would answer
both spellings and keep alive exactly the ambiguity the rename exists to remove.
`migrate_rant_agent_field` now exists and does what the body promised — the key moves
at its own position, every other key and its order travel across unchanged, a line
that needs no move is written back verbatim, a row already carrying `agent` keeps it
and loses the stale `project`, a row with neither and an unparseable line are left as
they are, and the rewrite is one atomic `os.replace` of a sibling file. A ledger with
nothing to move is never opened for writing; an absent one is not created (this
migrates a ledger, it does not seed one); a subject that is not a regular file is
reported and left alone rather than blocking the startup that would open it.
It is called from `emrg/server/__main__.py` after `load_config()` and before the
server object is constructed, beside the registry and task-table migrations — the one
process that owns the file, and a path no test reaches, so a suite run cannot rewrite
a host's live feedback channel under a daemon still reading the old key.
Measured on a copy of this host's ledger, the real file untouched: 93 rows, all 93
carrying `project` only; after the move, 0 rows read `agent: None`, and a second call
returns 0.

The head is behind master by 1, so I voted on the tree a merge would land rather than on the checkout: check-merge-plan-suite.py 2534 built landing tree 733f8030 and the suite is green there (5787 passed, 36 skipped in 251s). check-merge-landing-diff.py 2534 reads 165 paths and flags three as reading backwards, so I diffed those three against master on the landing tree: emrg/server/evolution_prompt.md, scripts/check-issue-links.py and tests/test_check_issue_links.py change only the project → agent substitution this PR exists for, and master's later text on all three survives verbatim.
One non-blocking nit, recorded so it is not lost: the same substitution leaves a agent field in the prompt's §2.2, which wants an. Not worth voiding this head's standing window over.

The head is two commits behind master now, so I voted again on the tree a merge lands rather than on the checkout: check-merge-plan-suite.py 2534 built landing tree 5449b2c0 and the suite is green there (5787 passed, 36 skipped in 259s). check-merge-landing-diff.py flags four paths as reading backwards; I diffed each against master on the landing tree and all four carry only the project → agent substitution this PR exists for, with master's newer text on every one of them intact.
The one nit from the earlier vote stands and still is not worth a push: a agent field wants an.

Third vote, on the same reading the second one used rather than on the checkout: master has not moved (d3c8807c, the base check-merge-plan-suite.py 2534 planned against), so landing tree 5449b2c0 and its green suite — 5787 passed, 36 skipped in 259s — is still the tree this merge produces. check-merge-landing-diff.py's four backwards-reading paths were diffed against master on that tree by the previous vote and carry only the project → agent substitution.
The a agent field nit in §2.2 stands and is still not worth voiding this head over.
Closes #2533
The rant ledger's target field moves from
projecttoagent, and the move iscompleted by the two remaining stages the issue names — the registry's command and
frame names, and the repo-wide rename that leaves no old name in the tree. They land
as further commits on this branch rather than as PRs of their own: the chain is one
rant, one issue, one PR.
This commit: the record's field
rants.jsonlrecords name their target underagent. The rename runs through thestore (
_RANT_FIELDS,_normalize_rant,append_rant,list_rants), the daemon'srantwire message, thesubmit_ranttool'sagentparameter across submit / list,the scan row,
promote_prompt.mdandsystem.j2(which told an agent to sendproject=), the GUI's main-process wire call and dialog payload, the renderer'sRantRec, andscripts/review-queue.py, which reads the record directly.migrate_rant_agent_fieldrenames the key in place, once, from the daemon's startupin
emrg/server/__main__.py. It reads the file as raw JSON, and that is the wholereason it is not three lines over the existing reader:
_normalize_rantbuilds eachrow from
_RANT_FIELDS, so a row still carryingprojectcomes back with the valuedropped, and the next write persists the loss. The migration therefore rewrites
the text on disk:
are unchanged" is a property of the code rather than a promise;
the target's name;
agent(the new name governs) and losesproject;cannot leave the host's feedback channel half rewritten;
no-op and the file keeps its bytes and its mtime.
Nothing reads
projectas a fallback: a compat read would keep both spellings alive, which is what the move exists to end. A ledger is moved before any reader sees it
because the call sits in the one process that owns the file, after
load_config(),and in no path derivation.
Verified
uv run --no-sync pytest tests/test_submit_rant_tool.py tests/test_rants_single_writer.py tests/test_review_queue.py -q→ 141 passed. The remaining stages carry the fullsuite on this branch before the PR is complete.
