Eco-Returns: An AI-Driven System for E-commerce Return Optimization

Eco-Returns is a full-stack system engineered to optimize e-commerce product returns through the integration of machine learning, a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) architecture, and carbon-emission modeling. The system is designed to convert the conventionally costly, inefficient, and environmentally impactful process of handling returns into a streamlined, economically viable, and sustainable operation.

Problem Statement

The surge in e-commerce has led to dramatically high return volumes, with global return rates typically ranging between 20–30% across various product categories. Traditional return management systems are characterized by several key drawbacks:

Financial Burden: Significant costs are incurred through logistics, labor, repackaging, and the subsequent loss of product resale value.

Operational Inefficiency: Manual decision-making processes are slow and error-prone.

Environmental Impact: Increased transportation requirements and higher rates of landfill disposal contribute negatively to sustainability.

Vulnerability to Fraud: The systems are susceptible to return fraud and other high-risk patterns.

Retailers consistently face the challenge of determining the optimal disposition for each returned item: Should it be resold? Is refurbishment economically justifiable? Should it be recycled to mitigate environmental harm? Or is discarding the only viable option?

Eco-Returns provides a solution by utilizing machine learning, rule-based heuristics, and rigorous carbon footprint analytics to generate optimized, data-driven disposition recommendations.

Core System Features

  1. User E-commerce Frontend

This module simulates the customer experience, enabling order placement and return initiation.

Transaction Workflow: Provides standard add-to-cart and ordering functionalities.

Return Initiation: Allows customers to initiate a return, specify the reason, and input their geographic location.

Automated Feature Generation: The system automatically computes critical features essential for the machine learning model:

    Days elapsed since purchase

    Customer return history and profile

    Product-specific attributes

    Quantified risk features
  1. SaaS Admin Dashboard

Serving as the central control panel, this dashboard facilitates the end-to-end evaluation and management of return requests.

Request Management: Comprehensive display and tracking of all pending return requests.

Machine Learning Disposition Prediction: Each request is assigned a recommended disposition based on the model's output:

    Resell / Refurbish / Recycle / Discard

Decision Transparency: Provides associated confidence scores and probability distributions for the prediction.

Administrative Control: Administrators retain the ability to Approve the ML-generated recommendation or Override the final disposition.

Integrated Sustainability Metrics:

Automatic carbon savings recomputation upon final disposition acceptance.

    A dedicated Sustainability Dashboard presenting:

        Total CO2 savings achieved.

Breakdown of savings by product category.

Breakdown of savings by disposition type.
  1. ML Microservice (Flask)

A dedicated, lightweight microservice responsible for providing real-time disposition predictions.

Model Implementation: Utilizes a Random Forest classifier trained on an adapted version of the Kaggle Orders dataset.

Data Processing: Features transmitted from the Node backend are processed through a structured feature-engineering pipeline.

API Interface: Offers a live scoring endpoint, /predict, for seamless application integration.
  1. Carbon Footprint Engine

This engine quantifies the environmental benefit derived from optimized return decisions.

Input Parameters:

    Product weight in kilograms.

Customer–Admin Distance: Calculated using the Haversine formula to estimate logistics-related emissions.

    Industry-standardized emission factors.

Avoided Footprint Factor: Used for resell and refurbish scenarios to account for the saving from avoiding new product manufacturing.

Output Metrics:

Estimated CO2 Savings (Initial prediction upon request).

Confirmed CO2 Savings (Finalized and logged upon admin acceptance of the disposition).
