Inference CI currently accepts short, non-empty responses even when transferred weights produce incorrect inference. This PR adds source-versus-target accuracy checks, updates the test models, and expands SGLang coverage. It compares benchmark scores instead of requiring identical generated text.

Models and runtimes

Test cases Model Runtime
Default inference, Dynamo, fleet, and MTP Qwen3.5-0.8B, replacing Qwen2.5 Existing framework-specific images
vLLM MLA TP2 / EP2 GLM-4.7-Flash vLLM 0.19.1 + Transformers 5.5.1
SGLang MLA TP2 / EP2 DeepSeek-V2-Lite SGLang 0.5.13.post1

Dynamo workers and matching frontends use 1.5.1. SGLang cross-node TP2 uses Qwen3.5-0.8B.

SGLang GLM and the streamed-weight ownership fix are excluded from this PR. Native SGLang with distributed ModelStreamer also reproduced malformed GLM output in a separate source-only experiment. DeepSeek retains the MLA/MoE transfer coverage while that issue is addressed separately.

How correctness is checked

flowchart LR
    S["Source ready"] --> B["Capture source MMLU baseline"]
B --> R["Start target and require RDMA transfer"]
R --> T["Run the same MMLU questions on target"]
    T --> C["Compare scores and validate responses"]
Loading

Standalone tests capture the source baseline before deploying the target. Dynamo captures it before scaling and pins requests to the original and new workers, checking the returned worker ID.

AIPerf 0.13.0 uses its built-in MMLU loader and grader: eight subjects × 16 questions = 128 questions per worker. Requests use one-shot prompts, greedy decoding, thinking disabled, concurrency one, and an eight-token answer cap. DeepSeek-V2-Lite requests stop at User: to end the base model response before it generates another conversation turn; source and target use the same setting.

Gate Requirement
Dataset and responses Identical source/target prompts and ground truths; no missing, duplicate, failed, empty, or invalid records
Answer parsing At least 95% of responses on each worker parse as A/B/C/D
Accuracy regression Reject a significant target score decrease using a one-sided exact paired test, p < 0.01
Transfer integrity Preserve existing RDMA, rank, and VRAM assertions; compare registered tensor SHA-256 catalogs where the standalone vLLM audit is enabled
MTP decoding Require main and draft RDMA transfers and two 128-token generations per worker

Different wording or individual answers are diagnostic, not automatic failures. This is a regression smoke test, not proof of accuracy equivalence or an absolute model-quality threshold.

Artifacts include raw responses, grades, dataset fingerprints, score comparisons, tensor audits, commands, timings, and failure logs.

Added SGLang coverage

Scenario Configuration
Dynamo aggregated Scale one worker to two; compare source and target through worker-pinned requests
Dynamo disaggregated Separate prefill/decode workers with NIXL KV transfer; scale decode workers
Cross-node TP2 Native rendezvous across two pods per replica; same-rank source/target placement on different hosts
DP2 Two native TP1 data-parallel cores per replica
EP2 DeepSeek-V2-Lite with TP2/EP2
MTP / speculative decoding Qwen3.5 EAGLE with matching immutable main/draft revisions

Existing admission limits, serialized large-workload scheduling, the fixed SGLang MLA KV-pool check, and strict VRAM gates remain in place.

Compatibility and harness fixes

  • Select the NIXL CUDA wheel matching PyTorch's CUDA major.
  • Prefetch matching non-weight model metadata for Dynamo worker-card compatibility, and probe the actual worker-pinned chat route before profiling.
  • Preserve MX transfer logs in SGLang scheduler subprocesses. Fix readiness polling, deployment-name limits, and ModelStreamer warmup handling.
  • Bound vLLM Qwen graph batches at 16 and set standalone base/MTP GPU utilization to 0.85; disable incompatible radix caching in the SGLang MTP lane.
  • Give scaled Dynamo containers a bounded 900-second start wait before the existing transfer/startup deadline; upload complete current/previous worker logs.

Validation

The PR contains one signed commit on main 3fe38ae9. Local checks passed 179 CI tests and 66 subtests, six NIXL import tests, and pre-commit. Regressions cover diagnostic-read failures, delayed/stuck/failed worker startup, full current/previous worker logs, and the DeepSeek stop sequence while preserving rejection of unparseable baselines. All 128 prompts fit the restored DeepSeek chat template: at most 823 prompt tokens plus the eight-token answer cap within the 1,024-token context.

Latest completed GPU run at 6742dcd7: run 40021391032. The subsequent DeepSeek request fix requires fresh GPU validation.

Coverage Status
vLLM base and all four full-manifest variants Passed
vLLM GLM TP2 / EP2 and Qwen DP2 Passed
vLLM and SGLang MTP Passed
SGLang base, Mooncake, and DP2 Passed
Dynamo aggregated, both frameworks Passed
SGLang DeepSeek TP2 / EP2 Failed source parsing: all 16 initial responses generated an answer letter followed by a new User: turn; this amendment adds the turn-boundary stop sequence
Large partition: cross-node, disaggregated, fleet, and rolling scenarios Skipped after the SGLang source failures
RL refit Passed

The PR remains a draft. The earlier vLLM MTP memory-startup and Dynamo vLLM startup-timeout fixes passed in this run. DeepSeek failures occur before target deployment. All 16 captured replies have a single answer letter before User:, but replaying the boundary is not a GPU qualification; the next CI run must verify the server stop behavior and source/target scores. AIPerf grading, accuracy, parsing, RDMA, and VRAM acceptance gates remain unchanged.

CI cost and limits

Earlier native measurements showed 128 questions taking about 69 seconds per warm vLLM worker, versus 59 seconds for 64. Measured source/target pairs took approximately 3 minutes for SGLang and 5.5 minutes for vLLM, excluding builds and model startup. Normal CI runs one 128-question pair without automatic calibration.

The subset does not exhaustively activate MoE experts or address individual DP cores. Tensor-byte auditing is limited to instrumented standalone vLLM lanes. Fleet, rolling-update, stale-metadata, ModelStreamer-only, and RL refit jobs do not gain AIPerf score checks.

Walkthrough

CI now compares source and target inference with AIPerf, records diagnostics, and uploads artifacts. The workflows add SGLang GPU scenarios and Dynamo worker support. vLLM checks add weight-digest auditing and CUDA graph limits. Runtime compatibility and model defaults are also updated.

Changes

Inference parity and artifacts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Source-to-target parity checks
.github/actions/run-mx-p2p-test/action.yml, .github/actions/run-mx-p2p-test/vram-sampling.sh, ci/k8s/client/*, ci/pyproject.toml, .github/workflows/modelexpress-core-ci.yml, CONTRIBUTING.md, ci/TEST_PLAN.md, docs/ARCHITECTURE.md
The P2P action installs the CI Python dependencies, captures a source baseline before target deployment, and uploads inference artifacts after success or failure. The new parity helpers validate AIPerf exports, compare source and target responses, check worker routing and long decodes, and record mismatch diagnostics. The test plan and architecture documentation describe the checks and retained artifacts.

Dynamo worker lanes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dynamo worker lanes and routing
.github/actions/run-mx-dynamo-test/action.yml, .github/workflows/modelexpress-inference-ci.yml, .github/workflows/modelexpress-inference-gpu-ci.yml, .github/scripts/tests/test_nightly_workflows.py, ci/k8s/client/launch_dynamo.py, ci/k8s/client/*/dynamo/*, ci/k8s/client/test_dynamo_p2p.py, ci/k8s/client/test_sglang_scenarios.py
The Dynamo action selects vLLM or SGLang scaling components and records worker-discovery metadata. The test discovers generation workers and compares source inference with requests pinned to a newly discovered target. Workflows and manifests add SGLang Dynamo image builds and aggregated or disaggregated test lanes; vLLM Dynamo images and manifests use the updated runtime and launcher.

SGLang GPU scenarios

Layer / File(s) Summary
SGLang GPU scenarios
.github/workflows/modelexpress-inference-gpu-ci.yml, .github/scripts/tests/test_nightly_workflows.py, ci/k8s/client/sgl/*, ci/k8s/client/test_p2p_mtp.py, ci/k8s/client/test_sglang_scenarios.py
The GPU matrix adds SGLang MTP, DP=2, EP=2, and multi-node TP=2 cases. New manifests configure SGLang workers, scheduling, resources, and ModelExpress/NIXL loading for these cases. Scenario tests check the manifests and generated launch arguments.

vLLM runtime and weight checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
vLLM runtime and weight checks
ci/k8s/client/vllm/Dockerfile, ci/k8s/client/vllm/manifest-azure-*.yaml, ci/k8s/client/vllm/weight_diagnostics.py, ci/k8s/client/vllm/test_weight_diagnostics.py, ci/k8s/client/test_sglang_scenarios.py, .github/workflows/modelexpress-inference-gpu-ci.yml
The vLLM image updates its base image and adds loader, model-configuration, and NIXL checks. Worker manifests set a maximum of 16 sequences and CUDA graph capture sizes; selected manifests enable weight-digest auditing. The new instrumentation logs tensor shape, dtype, and SHA-256 digest, with tests for audit output and installation.

Runtime compatibility and model defaults

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime compatibility and model defaults
modelexpress_client/python/modelexpress/*, modelexpress_client/python/tests/*, modelexpress_client/src/bin/test_client.rs, modelexpress_server/src/p2p/k8s_types.rs, workspace-tests/tests/artifact_transfer_contract.rs, .github/actions/run-mx-*.yml, .github/workflows/modelexpress-inference-*.yml, docs/CLI.md
NIXL package selection now uses the detected CUDA version, and the SGLang loader configures ModelExpress logging. The test client and several CI inputs and fixtures use Qwen/Qwen3.5-0.8B as the default model. The streamer action adds --language-model-only and adjusts its readiness wait and request timeout.

Move the SGLang logging wrapper into engines/sglang/.

configure_sglang_logging() adds a new hard-coded "sglang" binding to the package root. Move this wrapper into the SGLang module, keep _configure_engine_logging shared, and update the SGLang logging test to use the new location. This preserves behavior and enforces the engine-agnostic boundary.

The issue is a localized architecture violation, not a major-impact defect.

Compare source and P2P target inference with AIPerf's balanced MMLU subset, retain independent tensor-integrity and sustained-decoding checks, and expand SGLang and Dynamo scenario coverage. Use Qwen3.5 defaults, GLM for vLLM MLA/EP, and DeepSeek-V2-Lite for SGLang MLA/EP. Align runtime dependencies, NIXL CUDA selection, worker metadata, readiness, and scheduler logging.
