test(operator): add DGDR v1beta2 vCluster smoke test - #17684
Add one CPU-only end-to-end smoke test for the Helm-installed DGDR v1beta2 operator. The existing ClusterEnv case starts controllers in the test process; this test exercises the installed manager and chart-generated RBAC through a real Request → Run → AISimulate/AIC Job → publisher → Candidate flow.
Key Changes
Production operator/API logic: 0 lines. This adds one 216-line test and 81 lines of CI configuration.
Smoke test: create one Request with explicit simulated hardware, allow admission to default the workload/objective, and verify successful execution of both Job containers, Run ownership, the publisher ServiceAccount/RoleBinding, immutable input consistency, and a materialized Candidate with metrics. The test waits through the initial Run 404 after activeRunRef reserves its name, and follows the Run into retained history when completion clears activeRunRef.
DGDR deploy workflow: install the platform chart with v1beta2 enabled in a dedicated vCluster, use the CI-built operator/planner images, reuse existing diagnostics/artifact collection, and always tear down through the saved host kubeconfig.
Operator setup action: accept optional feature-gate and planner-image inputs. Existing callers retain their defaults. The DGDR filter now includes the new test and dgdr_run output-adapter changes.
The smoke test uses three optimizer trials and eight synthetic requests. It loads model configuration/performance data, not model weights, and does not deploy inference workers or require GPUs.
Validation
Case
Result
Real Helm/vCluster flow
test_dgdr_v1beta2_publishes_candidate: 1 passed in 20.26s
Delayed Run creation (temporary ResourceQuota)
Original test reproduces the Run 404; corrected full flow 1 passed in 60.41s, including the intentional wait
Missing namespace
Explicit failure before Kubernetes configuration access, verified with normal and optimized compilation
Local environment
vCluster 0.33.0 on a dedicated kind host; Kubernetes 1.35.0; ARM64
Execution images
Operator, CRD installer, and publisher compiled from the branch base; local planner image updated to pinned AISimulate Nightly 87 and current output-adapter source
CI/patch checks
Commit-time hooks, YAML and shell syntax, Helm flag rendering, and git diff --check passed
The local test cluster was deleted after validation. CI uses its freshly built AMD64 images.
Setup workflows can enable DGDR v1beta2 and optionally specify a planner image.
Tests
Added CPU-only end-to-end coverage for the DGDR v1beta2 request-to-candidate flow, including run completion, permissions, inputs, and candidate details.
Added an isolated Kubernetes smoke-test job with cleanup after failures.
Exercise the Helm-installed operator and generated publisher RBAC through one CPU-only Request-to-Candidate flow. Run the smoke test with the CI-built operator and planner images in its own vCluster, preserve host credentials for teardown, and trigger it for dgdr_run adapter changes.
Part of #13545.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds DGDR v1beta2 setup options, a Kubernetes end-to-end test for the Request-to-Candidate flow, and a shared CI job that runs the test in a dedicated vCluster.
The action adds optional inputs for v1beta2 enablement and the planner image. It passes these values to Helm and sets the default image when the planner image is nonempty.
Exercise the Request-to-Candidate flow tests/deploy/test_dgdr_v1beta2.py
The test creates a simulated Qwen3-32B request, waits for its Run to succeed, and checks ownership, workload execution, input ConfigMap contents, and the published Candidate.
Run the smoke test in CI .github/workflows/shared-dgdr-deploy-test.yml, .github/filters.yaml
The workflow runs the test in a dedicated vCluster and tears down the cluster when setup returned a name. The dgdr filter includes the test and DGDR output directory.
Explicitly validate the namespace. A timed-out smoke run may also need external cleanup, but the established risks are bounded and do not prevent merging with owner awareness.

Poll through the 404 window between activeRunRef reservation and Run creation. Restrict this handling to the pending Run read; all other API errors still propagate. Reproduced the old failure with a real vCluster ResourceQuota and verified the corrected Request-to-Candidate flow after releasing the quota.

No P0 or P1 found. This review read head 08d924c58edde576da0f13dbf4828b504bee9011 and has no inline findings.
The three earlier threads are resolved. This review tested the if not namespace guard at line 66. An empty --namespace fails before the kubeconfig loads, also under python -O.
The new job DGDR Deploy Test / CPU / v1beta2 smoke passed on all three heads of this PR. On this head, it is job 124132815159 in run 41074747869.
The red dynamo-runtime / test / parallel cuda13.0 jobs fail on deploy/operator/hack/test_upgrade_missing_origin.py, which this PR does not touch. #16786 fails the same way, and #17687 on main targets that test.
What this review measured, with controls.
The four new local steps use uses: $/.github/actions/.... That is the real text of the file. The base version of the file and 27 other files use the same form. In job 124132815159, GitHub ran each step as ai-dynamo/dynamo/.github/actions/<name>@08d924c58edde576da0f13dbf4828b504bee9011. The workflow declares every input and secret that the new job reads, and both callers pass them.
A stub helm (a fake that records its arguments) captured the helm upgrade command of the Install step. It ran for three caller shapes, on the base and on the head. For each existing caller, the head adds only --set dynamo-operator.dgdrV1Beta2.enabled=false. helm template of the operator chart gives the same 2134 lines with and without that flag. With enabled=true and a planner image, three lines change. The render for the new job equals all 41 arguments of the command in the CI log.
The names dgdr-v2-<run_id>-<attempt> and gh-id-<run_id>-<attempt>-dgdr-v2-dt change with each run and attempt. No other job uses dgdr-v2. In CI, teardown used the saved host kubeconfig and deleted only that vCluster and that namespace. The setup outputs survive a failed setup. In run 41092095690, the same action failed at its Helm install, and the cleanup job still deleted the vCluster and the namespace by those outputs. In run 41068734570, a cancelled test step was followed by an always() cleanup step that ran.
The saved file holds the host credentials of the runner inline, because --raw --flatten writes the token and the certificate data. Under umask 077, the file has mode 0600 for the runner user. No upload step reads RUNNER_TEMP. This review did not measure teardown at the 45-minute job limit. For that case, the host namespace carries nscleanup/ttl=7200.
Fake Kubernetes API calls and a fake clock replaced the real ones. The test function, its retry helper and the client models are the real code.

One read lasts 135 s at most, which is 4 attempts of 30 s and 3 pauses of 5 s. The poll loop can end 275 s after its 600 s deadline. The worst case is about 905 s, and the 900 s timeout marker stops the test first. In a 2 s control, pytest-timeout 2.4.0 stopped a hung async test under pytest-asyncio 1.3.0. In CI, the job took 5 min 19 s and the test took 38.49 s. The 45-minute limit covers the worst case of the test with a normal setup. A stuck setup can use the whole limit, because the setup action waits up to 1800 s for the CRDs and again for the Deployments.
In CI, the changed-files job put tests/deploy/test_dgdr_v1beta2.py under dgdr. With minimatch, the new adapter glob matches adapter.py and snapshot.py, and the base filter does not. A dgdr match alone starts every job that deploy-test-dgdr needs. These changes still skip the new job on a PR, and post-merge-ci.yml still runs it:
components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/output/dgd/** and components/src/dynamo/common/container_images.py, which the adapter imports
The rest of components/src/dynamo/aisimulate/**, and components/src/dynamo/planner/**

tests/deploy/vcluster_utils.py, which is outside dgdr since #14246
