Overview

DGDR v1beta1 accepts nominal VRAM within 10% of the measured value when deriving its GPU budget. The curated reference and TotalGPUs API comment still describe an exact-match rule. Align these descriptions and document the compatibility and migration behavior introduced by #17308.

Key Changes

  • Clarify vramMb and totalGpus in the curated DGDR Kubernetes API reference.
  • Correct the Go TotalGPUs comment and regenerate the CRD description, Python Pydantic description, raw API reference, and full Fern API reference from that source.
  • Add a v1.7.0 Upcoming note covering intentional hardware overrides, controller failure behavior, the corrected mixed-node budget, and migration through an explicit hardware.totalGpus.

Core-logic change: 0 lines. Runtime behavior, validation rules, field types, defaults, and conversion are unchanged; generated changes affect descriptions only.

Validation

  • make -C deploy/operator generate-api-docs manifests generate-pydantic completed successfully, including the existing Pydantic validation cases.
  • Compared the regenerated CRD with its previous version after excluding descriptions: schema and validation are identical. Compared the generated Python AST excluding field descriptions: executable model definitions are identical.
  • Generated API reference freshness, docs lint, Fern configuration and broken-link checks, commit hooks, and git diff --check pass.

Issues and Ongoing Work

Part of #13545; refs DGH-1426. This completes its curated-reference wording follow-up. The general DGDR v1beta2 workflow guide remains in #13094.

Pull Request Checklist
  • I used Dynamo's /pr-checklist skill.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified how automatic GPU-budget discovery handles VRAM values within or outside a 10% tolerance.
    • Explained when an explicit GPU total is needed, including for different GPUs-per-node settings or VRAM overrides.

No P0 or P1 found. This review read head 9f364bc329a6e112767d78a1d9709b24ed2674c9. The new vramMb, totalGpus and v1.7.0 text matches the code on main (22da2a10e8).

  • [P3] deprecations.mdx:26: the migration step is a plain paragraph. The other 181 migration steps on the page are blockquotes.
  • [P3] dynamo-graph-deployment-request.mdx:209: this row and two Go comments still say "the request is rejected". Admission accepts the request, and it fails later.
  • The earlier CodeRabbit finding on the TotalGPUs comment is fixed at this head.
What this review measured, with controls.
Claim How Result
The 10% bound, in both directions validateAutomaticGPUShape with a measured 81920 MiB and 8 GPUs per node 73728, 81920 and 90112 pass. 73727 and 90113 fail. numGpusPerNode: 4 fails. An explicit totalGpus skips both checks.
The bound includes 10% A deliberate break that changes <= to < in sameVRAMShape 73728 and 90112 then fail, and the test reports it.
The old exact-match text was wrong Nominal 81920 against a measured 81079 Passes.
Stored, then phase: Failed before a Job Validate, then handlePendingPhase with vramMb: 73727 Admission accepts it. The phase becomes Failed, and no profiling Job exists. With 73728, the Job exists and totalGpus is 8.
8+4 GPUs gives 8, not 16 Two H100 nodes with 8 and 4 GPUs 8 on main. 16 at 27ca7e61fe, the commit before #17308. There, a numGpusPerNode: 4 override also passed.
Generated files match the Go source make -C deploy/operator generate-api-docs manifests generate-pydantic with controller-gen v0.17.3, crd-ref-docs v0.3.0 and yq v4.45.4 The CRD and both API references are byte-identical. The Pydantic file has the same AST. This review compared the AST because black was not installed here. The base gives the same result. A one-word change in the Go comment changes all four files.
Only descriptions change The CRD without description keys, and the Pydantic AST without description= Identical between base and head. A planted type change and a planted default change are both found.
Docs checks docs_lint.py, gen_kubernetes_api.py --check, check_asset_paths.py, gen_llms_tables.py --check, check_llms_tables_determinism.sh, git diff --check, ruff check All pass. Planted breaks in these files are caught: a missing SPDX line, a broken link, a stale reference and trailing spaces.

v1.6.1 also computes GPUsPerNode * NodesWithGPUs. This review read that code but did not run it.

<span className="dynref-badge dynref-badge--blue">Behavioral</span> **DGDR v1beta1 hardware overrides require an explicit GPU budget when they differ from discovery** ([#17308](https://github.com/ai-dynamo/dynamo/pull/17308)). When `hardware.totalGpus` is omitted, `hardware.numGpusPerNode` must match the selected node shape and `hardware.vramMb` must be within 10% of its measured VRAM. Otherwise, the Request is stored but profiling fails with `phase: Failed` before a profiling Job is created. Previously, these overrides could use an automatically derived budget. Automatic budgets now count only nodes matching the selected GPU type, GPUs per node, and measured VRAM; an 8+4-GPU cluster of the same GPU type and VRAM yields a budget of 8 instead of the incorrect 16.

**Migrate:** Set `hardware.totalGpus` explicitly to retain an intentional node-size or VRAM override. Explicit budgets remain authoritative; nominal VRAM values within the 10% tolerance continue to work with automatic budgets.

Docs-only review. I checked the wording against main after #17308 (validateAutomaticGPUShape / sameVRAMShape in the DGDR controller, accumulateGPUCapacity in internal/gpu/discovery.go). The 10% rule is described correctly (|requested - measured| <= measured/10, inclusive), and the release note is a good addition.

Two things to fix before merge:

  1. Several field docs still say "the request is rejected". Nothing is rejected at admission: the DGDR is stored and then goes to phase: Failed.
  2. The migration note doesn't say that a Failed DGDR is terminal.

The rest are nits. Details are inline.

This still says "the request is rejected", while vramMb above now says "automatic GPU-budget discovery fails". Both run the same check (validateAutomaticGPUShape), and neither is an admission rejection: the DGDR is stored and goes to phase: Failed before the profiling Job is created. A reader who sees "rejected" will look for a kubectl apply error, but the error only shows up in status and events.

The VRAMMB comment just above and the NumGPUsPerNode comment just below (both outside this diff) still end with "...and totalGpus is omitted, the request is rejected." Those comments generate the CRD, Pydantic, api-reference-k8s.md and full-api-reference.mdx text, so all of them keep the "rejected" wording.

Since this PR already regenerates everything, could you update both comments too? For example:

When this value differs from the auto-selected shape and totalGpus is omitted, the DGDR fails before profiling starts; set totalGpus explicitly.

handleFailedPhase does nothing ("Could implement retry logic here if desired"), so adding totalGpus to a DGDR that has already failed won't restart it. Users who hit this after upgrading need to know that. Quoting the error prefix would also make it easy to find by search.

  • "instead of the incorrect 16": the field docs say the same cluster has 12 GPUs of inventory, so 16 reads like a typo unless you know the old formula. Suggest: "a cluster with one 8-GPU and one 4-GPU node of the same type now yields a budget of 8; previously it was computed as 2 nodes × 8 GPUs = 16."
  • "the Request is stored": suggest "the DGDR is stored". Capitalized "Request" isn't used anywhere else on this page.
  • The heading is long. Maybe: DGDR v1beta1: hardware overrides that differ from discovery require hardware.totalGpus.

If this value differs by more than 10% from the auto-selected shape and `totalGpus` is omitted, automatic GPU-budget discovery fails; set `totalGpus` explicitly to use that override.

Nit: "Nominal values within 10% ... identify the same shape" could suggest that the tolerance also applies when nodes are counted for the automatic budget. It doesn't: accumulateGPUCapacity requires node.VRAMPerGPU == selectedShape.VRAMPerGPU, so same-SKU nodes whose measured VRAM differs slightly are not counted. Consider making clear that the tolerance only applies to the user's vramMb. A concrete example would also show why the tolerance exists, e.g. "a vramMb of 81920 (nominal 80 GiB) matches a measured 81559 MiB".

<ParamField path="totalGpus" type="integer">
GPU budget for profiling and deployment; the profiler uses it to determine parallelism and replica count. When omitted, computed by summing GPUs on nodes matching the auto-selected shape: GPU type, GPUs per node, and VRAM per GPU. The result is temporarily capped at 32 to limit the profiler search space. This reflects discovered GPUs, not currently free capacity. For example, same-type nodes with 8 and 4 GPUs represent 12 GPUs of inventory, while the selected 8-GPU shape yields an automatic budget of 8. Set explicitly to override the derived budget or use a `numGpusPerNode` or `vramMb` value that differs from the selected shape; a shape override without `totalGpus` is rejected.

Nit: this says "selected shape's measured VRAM", while vramMb above says "auto-selected shape". Please pick one. "auto-selected" seems clearer, since gpuSku lets the user narrow the choice.

Head 9f364bc329a6e112767d78a1d9709b24ed2674c9. No P0, P1 or P2 is open.

The new vramMb, totalGpus and v1.7.0 text matches validateAutomaticGPUShape on main. Against a measured 81920 MiB, 73728 and 90112 pass, and 73727 fails. Without totalGpus, admission accepts a mismatched vramMb or numGpusPerNode. With vramMb: 73727, the controller then sets phase: Failed before a profiling Job exists. An 8+4-GPU cluster gets a budget of 8 on main and 16 before #17308. The pinned generators reproduce the committed CRD, Pydantic model and API references, and only descriptions change.

Open, not blocking: the two P3 comments in review 5716754676, on deprecations.mdx:26 and dynamo-graph-deployment-request.mdx:209.

Not run: the v1.6.1 code (read only), black (the Pydantic file was compared by AST), and a real API server (the webhook function was called directly).
