feat(planner): enable live retune through DGDR v1beta2 - #17562
This PR targets hzhou/live-retune-4-dgdr, the branch of #17736 (the PR below it), so its diff shows only this layer. Its branch merges #17736, so the library parts of this PR now live in #17733–#17736. Together the five PRs carry this PR's original diff exactly, plus a 40-line check in #17734 that rejects executor: dgdr in offline replay.
Overview
Periodic retune (#17095, #17540) runs only inside offline planner replay today; a live Planner rejects it at startup. This PR adds retune.executor: dgdr, which runs retune on a live Planner on Kubernetes:
At the end of each window, the Planner cuts the window's frontend request traces into one trace file on a shared ReadWriteMany claim.
It replays that file through DGDR v1beta2 Requests for a grid of KV router parameters and scores the Candidates on retune.objective.
Unless it runs in advisory mode, it sets the winner on every frontend router with PATCH /router_policy.
EXPERIMENTAL, development clusters only. Live retune searches the three router knobs a DGDR Request can express (overlap_score_credit, prefill_load_scale, temperature), with fixed replicas: the Planner must run retune-only, with load and throughput scaling off. The default executor: local keeps today's behavior.
After the split, this PR is the layer that turns live retune on. It adds the supervisor, Lease-backed state, router actuator, metrics and bootstrap, wires them into the live Planner, and adds the RBAC and docs. The layers below add the pieces it calls, and nothing reaches them before this PR:
retune.executor and retune.dgdr with configuration premises P1–P3, P5 and P13 (planner_config.py); retune/live/contracts.py; retune/live/frontend_config.py (spec premises); the live SweepRequest/SweepResult fields (retune/sweep.py); tests/live_retune_fakes.py; a replay check that rejects executor: dgdr
retune/live/dgdr.py (the DGDR sweep executor), retune/live/kube.py
Important
Merge after #17736 (and so after #17483). spec.workload.trace comes from #17483. Without it, the Planner's dry-run check (P11) fails and retune never launches. That failure is safe but makes the feature unusable. #17308, which gives the operator the get/list/watch on DGDR v1beta2 Runs and Candidates that the new Planner ClusterRole rules need, merged on 2026-10-29 and is in this branch.
User guide: docs/fern/pages/kubernetes/auto-deployment/planner-live-retune.md (new).
Key Changes
About 5.5k lines of implementation: 4.7k in five new planner/retune/live/ modules and 0.85k in existing planner files. About 8.5k lines are tests, 0.2k are the Helm template and its tests, and about 0.5k are docs.
New modules in components/src/dynamo/planner/retune/live/:
supervisor.py: LiveRetuneSupervisor, which runs each window through its steps:
Windows are aligned in epoch time (phase_seconds + k × interval_seconds), so a restarted Planner continues the same windows. The first window after retune is first enabled is skipped.
Before launching a window, it checks leadership, the premises and the time budget.
It persists each decision before any router sees it.
It handles the advisory and active modes, with a two-phase rollback to the startup parameters.
state.py: the leadership Lease <dgd>-planner-retune (get → check holder → update with resourceVersion; expiry measured on a local monotonic clock) and the state Lease <dgd>-planner-retune-state. Writes are fenced by leader term and deploy sequence, and the state keeps the decision history in an annotation. Leases are never patched.
actuator.py: reads and sets all eight /router_policy parameters on every frontend router, using revision-checked PATCH and reset, with an 8 s timeout. Outside advisory mode it reverts manual changes. It also checks P14.
bootstrap.py, metrics.py: the wiring, and the Prometheus metrics listed in the guide.
Existing files:
planner/retune/controller.py: adds optional hooks: an external sweep_fn (feat(planner): run a live retune sweep through DGDR v1beta2 Requests #17736's run_dgdr_sweep), a launch gate, a harvest gate, generation, predecessor and running futures, start(phase_s), drop_pending, rewind and restore_desired. The replay path does not pass them and is unchanged.
planner/core/types.py: RetuneDecision gains failure_reason and details.
planner/plugins/orchestrator/engine_adapter.py, planner/core/base.py: wire the supervisor (RetuneHooks, a disabled state, replace_retune), and add a quiet clean-up of leftovers from an earlier configuration. A live Planner now rejects only executor: local.
planner/__main__.py: when retune is set, SIGTERM cancels planner.run() so that the Lease is released and the controller closed before exit.
planner/config/planner_config.py: only the planner.retune description changes in this PR. It now says that executor: local runs in replay and that a live Kubernetes planner requires executor: dgdr (experimental). The rest of the configuration is in feat(planner): add the live retune configuration and deployment premises #17734.
planner/tests/retune_stubs.py: stubs for the new controller hooks.
Helm components/operator/templates/planner.yaml: when dgdrV1Beta2.enabled is set, the Planner Role and ClusterRole gain create/get/list/watch/delete on DGDR Requests, get/list/watch on Runs and Candidates, and get/create/update/delete on Leases. Tests are in tests/planner_rbac_test.yaml.

Behavior notes:
Recipes whose workers advertise their own router configuration (--router-mode or DYN_ROUTER_MODE on a worker, such as minimax-m3 and solar-open2) fail P4 by design. A worker's advertised configuration replaces the frontend's for its workers, and the Run replays only the frontend's configuration.
/router_policy is the unauthenticated frontend admin API. The guide explains how to deny it at L7.
Ran on a vcluster on an H200 development cluster, with this branch at 8f4a34011c (before the split) merged with #17483 at ad3bd3050e. The operator was installed cluster-wide with dgdrV1Beta2.enabled=true, and the Run Job used this branch's planner image, which carries the replay CRN change. The DGD served Qwen/Qwen3-0.6B on vLLM with one KV-router frontend recording traces to a ReadWriteMany claim and one active Planner (interval_seconds: 1200, timeout_seconds: 600, run.parallelism: 2, max_shards: 3).
The window cut wrote 3143 requests in 2.7 s. The Planner created 3 Requests (grid-0, grid-1, probe); all 3 Runs succeeded and it harvested 2 of 2 candidates. Decision kept: one worker makes the router knobs irrelevant, so both scored 195.298. A manual PATCH /router_policy was reverted by the Planner within 10 s.
2 workers, frontend started with DYN_ROUTER_TEMPERATURE=1.0, grid temperature: {choices: [0.0, 1.0]}, objective TTFT, min_improvement_percentage: 0
The window cut wrote 3101 requests in 3.1 s; 3 Runs succeeded and the sweep took 28.7 s. Decision applied: simulated mean TTFT 4.493 ms at temperature 1.0 and 3.778 ms at 0.0 (−15.9 %). 2 s after the decision the frontend logged Updated router policy parameters ... revision=1; GET /router_policy returned temperature 0.0 at revision 1, and dynamo_planner_retune_router_converged was 1.
The frontends wrote their segments under segments/<dgd>/<pod>/, so the $(DYN_PARENT_DGD_K8S_NAME)/$(DYN_POD_NAME) expansion in DYN_REQUEST_TRACE_FILE_PATH works on a real pod. The Run Jobs read the 0600 window files as the planner image user.
Not covered by that run: whether online TTFT improves after an applied decision, the advisory → promote_last_advisory path, several frontends, and the default 108-point grid's run time.
Local tests before the split

Full planner suite (dynamo/planner/tests) + CRN test
2858 passed, 3 skipped, 2 failed: test_virtual_connector.py::test_wait_for_unacknowledged_decision (unit and integration) need an etcd binary, which this host lacks; this PR does not touch them
pre-commit run --from-ref origin/main --to-ref HEAD
After merging main at c10c8797d2 (head 3ecbb634c1), the planner and replay gpu_0 suites gave 2960 passed, 3 skipped and 59 failed. main at c10c8797d2 fails the same 59 tests in the same environment (2131 passed), so this branch adds no failure. They come from this host: its prebuilt bindings lack conversation_affinity (#16854) and the ais-forward-pass feature, and it has no etcd binary. CI builds the bindings from source.
What the e2e tests cover, against fake Kubernetes, frontends and DGDR Runs, with a simulated clock:
advisory mode records recommendations and never writes a router;
apply → Planner restart → leader handover → switch to advisory → rollback to the startup parameters, with replicas_verified checked.
The unit tests (now spread over #17734–#17736 and this PR) cover:
every premise rule;
shard planning and the time budget;
the RFC 7386 shape of the Requests;
fencing of Lease writes, and leadership takeover and expiry;
revision conflicts in the router PATCH;
corrupt gzip members in window cuts;
reference counting during GC;
SIGTERM shutdown.
The stack split
The split moves code between PRs without changing it. The top of the stack is this branch merged with #17736:
Apart from that check, git diff --full-index 6e8087d359 <top> is byte-identical to git diff --full-index c10c8797d2 3ecbb634c1, which is this PR's diff before the split. The base blobs of all 45 paths are the same at c10c8797d2 and 6e8087d359.
Every layer was checked against the same suites at the stack base 6e8087d359 (#17483's head). At the top of the stack:

…ve metric
Replay retune scored every candidate on SLA goodput per GPU. Add
`retune.objective`, whose values are the DGDR v1beta2
`spec.objective.metric` enum spelled the same (Throughput,
ThroughputPerGPU, ThroughputPerUser, TTFT, E2ELatency, Goodput,
GoodputPerGPU), so a later live executor can copy it into a Request.
The default, GoodputPerGPU, keeps the current scoring.
- score_summary scores the AISimulate target the operator lowers each
metric to, in the metric's units. Only Goodput and GoodputPerGPU are
rescaled from the replay duration to the window: every candidate emits
the same output tokens, so window-normalized throughput would tie every
candidate, while the SLA already penalizes a slow goodput candidate.
A missing input (no SLA, no GPU-hours, no latency samples) fails the
candidate instead of scoring 0 or infinity.
- _decide ranks best first in the objective's direction and applies a
candidate only when it beats the current score by more than
min_improvement_percentage of |current score|; ties still go to the
current point, and non-finite scores never rank.
- sla_ttft_ms/sla_itl_ms apply only to the Goodput objectives.
- With load or throughput scaling, only GoodputPerGPU and
ThroughputPerGPU are accepted: other metrics improve with more GPUs, and
retune can search min_workers and the GPU budgets.

A live planner can now run retune (executor: dgdr). Every interval it cuts
the window from the frontends' request traces on a shared RWX claim,
replays it through DGDR v1beta2 Requests (one per balanced Cartesian
shard, plus a CRN probe), scores the Candidates with the replay
score_summary, decides with the unchanged _decide, and applies the winner
to every frontend router through PATCH /router_policy. One advisory switch
covers scaling and retune.
- retune/live: frontend config parsing and premises (P4, P6-P10, P14), the
streaming window cutter with per-member gzip validation, the DGDR
executor (shards, Strict create, adoption by spec hash, lifecycle state
machine, read-back, scoring), the supervisor (Lease leadership, a
term-guarded state snapshot, outbox, initialization table, two-phase
rollback, revalidation), the router actuator and the reconciler.
- Controller, adapter and base hooks: launch_gate, harvest_allowed,
drop_pending/rewind, epoch-phase windows, replace_retune, a disabled
adapter state, SIGTERM handling; replay is unchanged.
- Config: retune.executor and retune.dgdr with live premises P1-P3, P5, P13.
- Replay: trace runs pass _deterministic=True (common random numbers).
- Helm: planner RBAC for DGDR v1beta2 objects and Leases when
dgdrV1Beta2.enabled; docs for the experimental live retune.

- metrics: pass the collector registry by keyword instead of through a
dict splat, which mypy matched against the positional parameters of
Counter and Gauge.
- dgdr: read the current attempt's Request name through
_ShardRun.require_name(), so the get_request calls get a str rather
than Optional[str].
- dgdr, state: derive Request names, label values, spec digests and the
state fingerprint from SHA-256 instead of SHA-1. They are identifiers,
not secrets; the lengths are unchanged.
- window_cut: publish window files with mode 0600 instead of 0644. The
Run Job reads them as the planner image user (UID 1000), which is also
the Planner's default user, so neither group nor others need access;
CodeQL flags group-readable modes too. The live retune guide states the
requirement.

The Planner configuration example pinned backend_version "0.11.0" for
h200_sxm, which the pinned AISimulate does not accept for that GPU
(UnlistedQueryVersionError), so every Run would fail. The example now
leaves it out, and the engine section says when to set it.
The limitations table now says that a frontend starting with
overlap_score_credit 0 keeps it at 0: a live router rejects a positive
credit then, so an omitted credit searches only 0 and a written positive
value fails P4.

Walkthrough
The Planner adds experimental Kubernetes live retuning through DGDR v1beta2. It validates deployment settings, evaluates DGD and frontend premises, cuts trace windows, runs router-configuration sweeps, persists decisions and leadership state, and applies or rolls back router policies. The change also adds tests, RBAC rules, and documentation.

Adds the dgdr executor configuration and validation, shared live-retune contracts, sweep metadata, and decision failure fields. Configuration checks include Kubernetes operation, router and engine constraints, claim paths, shard limits, and timeout budgets.
Wires live-retune startup, shutdown, tick effects, and SIGTERM handling into the Planner. Adds phase anchoring, launch and harvest hooks, replica verification, controller replacement, and sweep serialization across generations.

Parses DGD frontend and worker settings, evaluates live-retune premises, builds supervisor inputs, and adds Kubernetes access for DGDs, pods, Requests, Runs, Candidates, and Leases.
Adds trace-window cutting and DGDR shard execution. The executor creates or adopts Requests, validates Run inputs, harvests candidate scores, and reports sweep results.

Adds Lease leadership, persisted retune state, initialization and rollback planning, generation-aware decision handling, and conditional state writes.
Adds live-retune integration coverage, deterministic trace replay for aggregated and disaggregated sweeps, conditional DGDR and Lease RBAC, and documentation for configuration, deployment, and limitations.
A corrupted live-retune state annotation can leave the Planner's retune supervisor permanently uninitialized until an operator deletes the Lease. The feature is experimental and limited to development clusters. Making the state parser raise its own format error for bad numbers, and failing fast on invalid router-domain config, should be done before or soon after merge.

Move the function-level imports to the top of the module.
hooks() imports RetuneHooks. sweep_fn imports run_dgdr_sweep. Its except branch imports SweepResult. These imports hide dependencies until the code path runs. The import in the except branch can itself fail while the code handles an error.
If a circular import forces this pattern, use a module-level import dynamo.planner.retune.live.dgdr as dgdr style import. Otherwise, document the cycle as an explicit exception. SweepResult is already imported under TYPE_CHECKING, so a runtime module-level import should be straightforward.

Replace the defensive getattr() calls with direct attribute access on known types.
effects is a PlannerEffects, and decision is a RetuneDecision. RetuneDecision defines failure_reason and details (see test_live_retune_controller_hooks.py, lines 1186-1236). getattr(..., None) hides a broken contract. If a field is renamed, decisions are silently counted without a failure reason, and the history loses details/image.
Use effects.retune_decisions, effects.router_parameters, decision.failure_reason and decision.details directly.

Update `_DgdrSweep` to access the declared `SweepRequest` fields directly
instead of using `getattr` fallbacks. Apply this to `deadline_s`, `generation`,
`replicas_verified`, `router_domain`, and `spec_replicas`, preserving the
existing fallback from an empty `spec_replicas` value to `replicas` and the
existing empty-domain handling.
Replace the defensive getattr on _pending with direct access.
self.engine.retune_controller is a RetuneController, and _pending is part of its definition. getattr(controller, "_pending", None) hides a rename or removal. In that case pending becomes None, and the test skips the wait. The sweep then runs concurrently with the next step, so the test becomes non-deterministic instead of failing loudly. Assert that the controller exists and read the attribute directly.

p2.crash() only removes p2 from the world. Its code never runs again. The test therefore covers a dead holder, not a paused holder that resumes after p3 takes over. A resumed holder can still write state or PATCH routers. Lease expiry alone does not prevent this.
Add a case where the superseded planner runs control_round, outbox_round, or a sweep harvest after takeover. Assert these results:
Its state write is rejected.
No router PATCH or reset reaches FakeFrontends.writes under the old leader_term.
Without this case, the suite does not show that fencing exists.
Based on learnings: "Reviewers should verify there is a fencing mechanism (e.g. a token/version check on completion) that rejects late writes from the superseded holder".

Remove the try/except ImportError around the Kubernetes connector import.
kubernetes is a declared runtime dependency in project.dependencies. An ImportError here therefore means a broken install, not an optional feature. The current code returns False, so the planner silently skips the legacy retune clean-up. Leftover routers and DGDR Requests from a removed live retune then stay in place, and no error is shown. Import the connector at module top, or import it directly here without the guard, so that a broken install fails loudly.

Move the function-body imports to module top.
Many functions import modules in their bodies. Examples are KvRouterConfig in KvRouterResolver, dgdr, window_cut, actuator, reconciler, metrics, kube and domains. The repository guideline requires a flag on every import inside a function. Such imports hide dependencies, and a missing package then fails only on that code path.
The module docstring says the goal is that "planners without live retune never load them". The caller can reach that goal with one gate: NativePlannerBase imports bootstrap only on the live-retune path. bootstrap can then import its collaborators at module top. If this is a deliberate exception, record it in .ai/python-guidelines.md.
As per coding guidelines: "Always flag any import statement that appears inside a function body, method, or class."

Stop hiding errors in the broad except Exception blocks.
Four helpers catch Exception and return a fallback value:
worker_spec_replicas returns None.
_served_model returns None without logging.
searched_router_keys returns ().
_runtime_namespace falls back to host.config.namespace.
searched_router_keys has the largest effect. If expand_router_domain raises, SupervisorSettings.from_config receives router_keys=(). The supervisor then starts with no searched router keys, and only a log line records the cause. A bad retune.router should fail build_supervisor instead.
Catch only the exceptions that each helper can handle, such as ValueError from domain expansion or KeyError/ValueError from component lookup. Let other errors propagate.
As per coding guidelines: "Catch specific exceptions only" and "If you must catch broadly, use except Exception: ... and always re-raise after logging."

Replace the assert config checks with explicit if/raise.
dgdr_context_factory and dgdr_canary use assert to check config.retune and retune.dgdr. This data comes from outside the function. Python removes assert statements under python -O. The factories would then fail with AttributeError on retune.dgdr and not with a clear message.

Move the function-body imports to module top.
These functions import modules in their bodies:

_worker_router_parser: kv_router_args and router_args
_env_bound: utils
_router_domain_keys and _controller_errors: dynamo.planner.retune.domains
The module already imports dynamo.common.configuration.groups.kv_router_args, router_args and dynamo.llm at the top. The lazy imports therefore avoid no load cost. Raise StateFormatError for every bad scalar so the corrupt-state recovery path runs.
StateStore.read only catches StateFormatError. With that error, it returns corrupt=True, and the next claim write replaces the damaged snapshot. Some fields can still fail with a different exception type:
Python's json.loads accepts NaN and Infinity by default. A value of "last_window_end_ms": NaN passes the isinstance(last, (int, float)) check. Then int(last) raises ValueError (NaN) or OverflowError (inf).
updated_ms is not validated. int(body.get("updated_ms") or 0) raises ValueError for a string such as "x", and TypeError for a list or object.
These exceptions escape read(). _read_own_snapshot catches only KubeError and asyncio.TimeoutError, so _initialize_locked raises. lease_round then logs "initialization failed" on every round. The leader never initializes, and the documented replace-on-corrupt behaviour never runs. An operator then has to delete the Lease by hand.

This now runs on every Kubernetes planner without retune: it imports the retune bootstrap, then does two Lease GETs and a DGD GET under a 30 s timeout at startup. With the default dgdrV1Beta2.enabled=false there's no Lease RBAC, so every planner logs a retune 403 at INFO (bootstrap.py:565) on each start. Run it off the startup path and log the 403 at debug.

Initials are persisted after reconcile has already PATCHed. A revision-0 router is latched and PATCHed in one round; if the pod gets SIGTERM before this write (the guide's "set advisory: true" restart does exactly that), the advisory or decommission rollback runs with learn_unknown=False, leaves the router on retuned values, and reports converged. Persist new initials before any write, as decisions are.

The SIGTERM handler is only installed with a retune config, but a decommissioning planner also holds the leadership Lease, so SIGTERM skips its release. It heals after the 60 s Lease; install the handler whenever a clean-up supervisor runs.

Periodic retune (#17095, #17540) runs only inside offline planner replay today; a live Planner rejects it at startup. This PR adds
retune.executor: dgdr, which runs retune on a live Planner on Kubernetes:retune.objective.PATCH /router_policy.EXPERIMENTAL, development clusters only. Live retune searches the three router knobs a DGDR Request can express (

The defaultexecutor: localkeeps today's behavior. After the split, this PR is the layer that turns live retune on. It adds the supervisor, Lease-backed state, router actuator, metrics and bootstrap, wires them into the live Planner, and adds the RBAC and docs. A worker's advertised configuration replaces the frontend's for its workers, and the Run replays only the frontend's configuration./router_policyis the unauthenticated frontend admin API. The guide explains how to deny it at L7.Validation
Development cluster run
Ran on a vcluster on an H200 development cluster, with this branch at
8f4a34011c(before the split) merged with #17483 atad3bd3050e. The operator was installed cluster-wide withdgdrV1Beta2.enabled=true, and the Run Job used this branch's planner image, which carries the replay CRN change. The DGD servedQwen/Qwen3-0.6Bon vLLM with one KV-router frontend recording traces to a ReadWriteMany claim and one active Planner (interval_seconds: 1200,timeout_seconds: 600,run.parallelism: 2,max_shards: 3).overlap_score_credit: {choices: [0.5, 1.0]}, objectiveGoodputPerGPUgrid-0,grid-1,probe); all 3 Runs succeeded and it harvested 2 of 2 candidates. Decisionkept: one worker makes the router knobs irrelevant, so both scored 195.298. A manualPATCH /router_policywas reverted by the Planner within 10 s.DYN_ROUTER_TEMPERATURE=1.0, gridtemperature: {choices: [0.0, 1.0]}, objectiveTTFT,min_improvement_percentage: 0applied: simulated mean TTFT 4.493 ms at temperature 1.0 and 3.778 ms at 0.0 (−15.9 %). 2 s after the decision the frontend loggedUpdated router policy parameters ... revision=1;GET /router_policyreturned temperature 0.0 at revision 1, anddynamo_planner_retune_router_convergedwas 1.The frontends wrote their segments under
segments/<dgd>/<pod>/, so the$(DYN_PARENT_DGD_K8S_NAME)/$(DYN_POD_NAME)expansion inDYN_REQUEST_TRACE_FILE_PATHworks on a real pod. The Run Jobs read the0600window files as the planner image user. Not covered by that run: whether online TTFT improves after an

The stack split
The split moves code between PRs without changing it. The top of the stack is this branch merged with #17736:
hzhou/live-retune(3ecbb634c1) without conflicts. The merged tree differs from feat(operator): replay recorded traces from a PVC in DGDR v1beta2 runs #17483's head plus this PR's original diff only by feat(planner): add the live retune configuration and deployment premises #17734's replay check (replay/api.py+8,replay/tests/test_retune_replay.py+32).git diff --full-index 6e8087d359 <top>is byte-identical togit diff --full-index c10c8797d2 3ecbb634c1, which is this PR's diff before the split.
