docs(observability): list every Dynamo metric in the Metrics Catalog - #17460
Dynamo had no single place that lists every metric it emits. The Metrics Catalog documented 83 metrics, nothing checked it against the code, and several of its statements no longer matched what a running frontend exposes. With this PR, the catalog lists every metric Dynamo defines, its statements match live scrapes, and contributors are asked to update it whenever they change a metric.
Key Changes
Documentation and contributor guidance only; no code changes.
metrics-catalog.mdx: lists 303 metrics, 281 that Dynamo defines plus 22 imitation engine metrics from the mocker, grouped by the process that exposes them. The 95 core metrics keep detailed entries; the other 208 are in tables with type, labels, a one-line description, and status (2 deprecated, 27 experimental). Each section states the port to scrape, the labels added automatically, and when the metrics appear. Engine, operator, NIXL, Velo, and KVBM metrics are out of scope and linked instead, and a new Engine Metrics section links the vLLM, SGLang, and TensorRT-LLM references.
The same page corrects the statements that live scrapes contradict; see Validation.
AGENTS.md: update the catalog in the same pull request whenever a metric is added, renamed, deprecated, or removed.
An earlier revision put the full list on a separate Metrics Inventory page. Reviewers found that it overlapped the catalog, so the list now lives in the catalog and each metric is documented once.
Validation
I ran python -m dynamo.frontend with two python -m dynamo.mocker workers in four configurations (KV routing aggregated, KV routing disaggregated, round-robin, and KV routing without a queue threshold), sent chat and completion requests, and scraped /metrics on the frontend and both workers. All 160 metric families seen are in the catalog. The scrapes contradicted these catalog statements:
Case
Catalog said
Scrape shows (now documented)
Router request, latency, and sequence-length metrics, non-KV mode
Always zero
Populated; only the KV-specific metrics stay at zero
Series exist once a KV router starts, at zero without a threshold
Labels on worker metrics
All carry the hierarchy labels
Uptime carries only worker_id, dynamo_backend_admission_* has no dynamo_endpoint, dynamo_work_handler_* has none
The other entries come from the code that registers each metric: those that need a GPU engine, the planner, LoRA, the QUIC response plane, the standalone KV indexer, System One, or the Global Frontend. A script confirmed that each of the 303 names has exactly one entry.
…errors
Add a reference page that lists every metric Dynamo defines, grouped by
the process that exposes it, with type, labels, description, and status.
The Metrics Catalog links engine metrics to their upstream references and
no longer contradicts what a live frontend and worker expose:
- router request metrics are populated in every router mode
- routing overhead histograms are registered on every frontend
- worker_active_* gauges exist only with KV routing
- the router ITL histogram is empty in KV mode without
--router-track-output-blocks
- router queue metrics have series without a queue threshold
- uptime, backend admission, and work handler metrics carry fewer labels
than the catalog said
AGENTS.md now asks for an inventory row for every new metric.

The pull request adds a reference page for Dynamo-defined metrics, revises the Metrics Catalog’s descriptions of metric behavior, and links the inventory from contributor guidance and documentation navigation.
Clarifies metric labels and availability across router modes. Adds engine pass-through metric details, including prefixes, enablement controls, and references.
Inventory links and update guidance AGENTS.md, lib/llm/AGENTS.md, docs/fern/index.yml, docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/advanced-customizations/metrics-developer-guide.md
Adds contributor instructions to update the inventory when Dynamo-defined metrics change. Adds navigation and related-documentation links to the inventory.
Incorrect label guidance could cause monitoring queries to miss metrics. The documentation is otherwise mergeable with these corrections as follow-up.

Explanation
The description follows the template's sections (Overview, Key Changes, Validation, Issues and Ongoing Work, and the checklist). It explains the goal: the catalog now lists every Dynamo-defined metric, its statements are corrected against live scrapes, and AGENTS.md asks contributors to keep it current. It lists the files changed and gives a detailed validation method with a table of contradicted statements. It also states how the 303 names were checked. The 'Closes DIS-3238' line is present, though the template's '#XXXX' form is not used.

Docs review. This is a strong, much-needed page.
What I checked: I grepped the PR head for all 294 metric names in the inventory tables, and each one is defined in the code. The planner port default, the LoRA "_total but gauge" note, and the disconnected_clients gauge type match the code. Every relative link and anchor resolves, and the external engine links load.
One blocking item: remove the KVBM section, since KVBM is sunset in v1.7.0 (inline comment). The rest are nits. CodeRabbit's comment on the model label at line 293 also stands.
Out of scope, separate PR: KVBM is still mentioned on about 30 pages under docs/fern/pages, including kvbm-configuration.mdx, the vLLM recipe templates, and compatibility.mdx. The deprecations entry also still says "removal is targeted for v1.7.0" instead of "removed".
> KVBM is deprecated since v1.5.0, and `main` no longer builds it. These metrics apply only to releases that ship KVBM. See [Deprecations](../general/releases/deprecations.mdx).
KVBM serves these from its own server at `/metrics` on `DYN_KVBM_METRICS_PORT` (default `6880`) when `DYN_KVBM_METRICS=1`, with no labels. In the block names, `d2d` means GPU to disk for offload and disk to GPU for onboard.

KVBM is sunset; please drop this section.main is already v1.7.0 (Cargo.toml), which is the release deprecations.mdx set for removing KVBM. The warning above says main no longer builds it, so listing 13 kvbm_* metrics (even as Deprecated) tells readers on this version that they exist.
If you want a pointer for older releases, add one bullet under "This page does not list" instead:
KVBM metrics, removed in v1.7.0. See the documentation for v1.6 and earlier.
Knock-on edits: the PR body counts (304 → 291 rows, 15 → 2 deprecated). With KVBM gone, every Deprecated row names a replacement, which matches the status definition on line 20.

This subtitle now contradicts the new intro ("Most Dynamo-generated metrics…") and the inventory page, which is now the complete list. Search results and the nav preview show this text. Suggested:
Suggested change
subtitle: Every dynamo_* metric emitted by the frontend, backend workers, and router — name, type, and meaning.
subtitle: Semantics, availability, and PromQL for the core frontend, worker, and router metrics.
`dynamo_frontend_worker_*` gauges appear once workers register and begin serving. They live on the frontend's local registry (not component-scoped) and do **not** carry `dynamo_namespace` or `dynamo_component` labels. Frontend-only — not available on the standalone router. Labeled by `worker_id`, `dp_rank`, and `worker_type`.
At each HTTP scrape, these six gauges include only workers in the current committed router membership that pass hard availability checks, and only their current data-parallel (DP) ranks. The timing gauges also allow `dp_rank="none"` when the rank is unknown, provided the worker remains available. The `worker_type` label describes serving attribution: an Encode worker serving Chat/Completions reports its load and timing samples as `decode`, while the inventory metrics below retain its `encode` topology role. Removed or excluded workers disappear from the output; late request completions or load updates cannot restore their exposed series.
Only the KV router writes the three `dynamo_frontend_worker_active_*` gauges, so they have no series in other router modes; the three `dynamo_frontend_worker_last_*` gauges are populated in every mode.

Now that a page called Metrics Inventory exists, "the inventory metrics below" reads as that page. This sentence means the router worker inventory gauges. Suggest: "…while the router worker inventory gauges below retain its encode topology role."
Backend workers also expose their inference engine's own metrics at `/metrics` on `DYN_SYSTEM_PORT`. The engine defines these metrics, so their names, types, and meanings follow the engine version you run. Dynamo passes them through unchanged and adds the `dynamo_namespace`, `dynamo_component`, `dynamo_endpoint`, `worker_id`, `model`, and `model_name` labels.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Small contradiction: "passes them through unchanged and adds … labels". Suggest: "Dynamo passes them through with the engine's names, types, and values, and adds the dynamo_namespace, … labels."

The PR body says the catalog drifted because nothing checks it against the code. The inventory has the same weakness, and this change drops the requirement to add new frontend metrics to the catalog. Could you file a follow-up for a docs_lint.py rule that every catalog <ParamField path="dynamo_…"> has an inventory row? Better still, a test that every constant in prometheus_names.rs / .py appears in the inventory. Not blocking.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Filed DIS-3294 for a check of the catalog against prometheus_names.rs / .py, including the names built elsewhere, such as the planner and Global Frontend metrics. The ParamField-to-inventory-row lint is no longer needed: d6b3aa9 merged the inventory into the catalog, so each metric has one entry. lib/llm/AGENTS.md is now unchanged from main, so it still tells contributors to add new frontend metrics to the Metrics Catalog.
Exposed by `python -m dynamo.planner` at `/metrics` on its own port, set by `metric_reporting_prometheus_port` (default `PLANNER_PROMETHEUS_PORT`, else `0`, which disables the server). The Kubernetes operator sets the port to `9085`. Planner metrics carry no automatic labels. See [Planner Configuration](../components/planner-configuration.mdx).

"(default PLANNER_PROMETHEUS_PORT, else 0…)" reads as if the default were a literal value. Suggest: "…set by metric_reporting_prometheus_port, which defaults to the PLANNER_PROMETHEUS_PORT environment variable, or 0 (server disabled) when that is unset." This matches planner_config.py:1307.

The label repeating the metric name is correct: these are prometheus_client.Enum metrics (planner_metrics.py:161), and an Enum uses the metric name as its state label. Without that context it looks like a copy-paste error, though. Consider adding "(Prometheus Enum; the label holds the reason)" to the description, or showing the type as gauge (enum).

The Mocker table has only Metric / Type / Engine type, but "How to Read This Page" implies every row has Labels, Description, and Status. Add one sentence to the intro: "These imitate engine metrics, so they have no status, and their meaning follows the engine they imitate."

Previously reported defects still present:
Original discussion: The Router introduction still implies dynamo_router_overhead_* receives the shared dynamo_namespace, dynamo_component, and worker_id labels, but those frontend-only metrics expose only router_id. Clarify this exception so label-filtered queries are not documented incorrectly.
Original discussion: The backend Request Handling introduction still claims every endpoint metric receives model, although internal endpoints such as worker_kv_indexer_query_dp{N} do not. Limit the claim to inference endpoints so users do not write filters that suppress valid internal series.
Original discussion: The inventory still lists 13 KVBM metrics even though v1.7/main no longer builds KVBM, so the current-version inventory presents removed metrics as emitted. Remove the KVBM table and point readers to v1.6-or-earlier documentation.
Original discussion: Verified still present: the Backend Workers introduction says all request-handling metrics gain a model label, but internal endpoints such as worker_kv_indexer_query_dp{N} do not. This can make documented model-filtered queries silently return no series; scope the claim to inference endpoints.
Original discussion: Verified still present: the new inventory lists KVBM metrics as emitted metrics even though KVBM is no longer built on main/v1.7. Remove this section and point readers of older releases to the corresponding versioned documentation.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Two documentation findings: distinguish the multimodal/embedding label sets, and clarify the logical KVBM collector's coverage and registration conditions. Source inspection only; no tests were run.
These carry `model` and `dynamo_component`. The embedding cache metrics require `--multimodal-embedding-cache-capacity-gb` greater than 0. The image cache metrics are registered on vLLM multimodal workers, and the shared image cache records samples only with `DYN_MM_SHARED_IMAGE_CACHE_ENABLED=1`.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[P2] Document the distinct label sets in this section
When this matters
These rows cover several metric publishers with different label sets. The introductory sentence currently makes model and dynamo_component the shared label set, while the embedding rows list no additional labels. That is incomplete for both SGLang embedding workers and the vLLM scheduler-side embedding cache.
Evidence and impact
SGLang's embedding initialization registers dynamo_embedding_* with namespace, component, endpoint, and model arguments. The callback implementation consequently adds dynamo_namespace, dynamo_component, dynamo_endpoint, worker_id, model, and model_name to the exposed samples.
For a data-parallel vLLM deployment, omitting dp_rank hides that these are separate rank-local caches. A dashboard can therefore retain several series where the inventory suggests one, or combine cache gauges incorrectly. The SGLang rows likewise understate their exposed label set.
Suggested correction
Document the common labels and then spell out these publisher-specific exceptions. For example, supplement the introduction with:
+The vLLM scheduler-side embedding cache also carries `dp_rank` and+the hierarchy labels injected by the engine-metrics export callback.+The SGLang `dynamo_embedding_*` histograms carry `model`,+`model_name`, `dynamo_namespace`, `dynamo_component`,+`dynamo_endpoint`, and `worker_id`.
A documentation correction is sufficient; this does not require changing the collectors.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in c417160. The section intro now lists the label set of each publisher: the in-process caches carry model and dynamo_component; the vLLM scheduler-side connector carries those plus model_name, dp_rank, and the hierarchy labels; and SGLang dynamo_embedding_* carries model, model_name, and the hierarchy labels.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
[P3] Clarify coverage of the logical block-pool collector
Missing definitions
If the KVBM section is retained, it does not cover all the KVBM metrics Dynamo defines. lib/kvbm-logical/src/metrics/collector.rs defines another 19 families: 15 counters and 4 gauges, including:
Metric
Type
Built-in label
kvbm_allocations_total
counter
pool
kvbm_evictions_total
counter
pool
kvbm_inflight_mutable
gauge
pool
kvbm_reset_pool_size
gauge
pool
None appears in the inventory. The collector can also append caller-supplied external labels.
Availability and impact
This is a source-definition coverage gap, not evidence that current Dynamo processes expose these metrics by default. MetricsAggregator::register_with explicitly registers the collector with a caller-provided Prometheus registry; a useful inventory entry would need to describe that opt-in condition rather than imply the legacy KVBM HTTP server exports them.
The page introduction and new contributor rule currently promise coverage of every Dynamo-defined metric, so silently omitting this collector makes that promise inaccurate.
Suggested resolution
There is already a review thread requesting removal of the retired KVBM section. If that direction is chosen, explicitly exclude KVBM, including the logical block-pool collector, from the page's scope and adjust the completeness wording/counts accordingly. If KVBM source definitions remain in scope, add these 19 families with their types, pool label, optional external labels, and explicit registration condition.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The KVBM section is removed in c417160. The exclusion bullet names the kvbm-logical block-pool metrics explicitly. That crate is no longer a workspace member on main, and only its own test calls register_with.
Remove the KVBM section, since v1.7.0 no longer ships KVBM, and list it
under the metrics the page excludes. Document the label exceptions
reviewers found: routing overhead metrics carry only router_id, the
model label is on inference endpoints only, and the embedding cache
metrics have per-publisher label sets. Clarify the planner port default,
the planner Enum metrics, and the mocker table. In the catalog, fix the
subtitle, the router worker inventory reference, the engine
pass-through wording, and the vLLM metrics URL.

Reviewers found that the inventory and the catalog overlapped: every
metric with a catalog entry also had an inventory row. Fold the
inventory into the catalog so each metric is documented once, and
delete metrics-inventory.md, which never shipped. Core metrics keep
their detailed entries; the others move into tables in the section of
the process that exposes them.
Also cover what main added since: the System One frontend metrics, and
Velo metrics as a separate library with a link to its reference.
Remove the catalog's mention of dynamo_preprocessor_* metrics, which no

docs(observability): list every Dynamo metric in the Metrics Catalog

@nv-yna Done in d6b3aa9: I merged the inventory into the Metrics Catalog and deleted metrics-inventory.md, so each metric is documented once. One thing to check against #17516: about 165 of the newly listed metrics have status Current, and its stability rule would treat any catalog entry without an experimental mark as stable.

Overview
Engine, operator, NIXL, Velo, and KVBM metrics are out of scope and linked instead, and a new Engine Metrics section links the vLLM, SGLang, and TensorRT-LLM references.AGENTS.md: update the catalog in the same pull request whenever a metric is added, renamed, deprecated, or removed. An earlier revision put the full list on a separate Metrics Inventory page. Reviewers found that it overlapped the catalog, so the list now lives in the catalog and each metric is documented once.
Validation
I ran
python -m dynamo.frontendwith twopython -m dynamo.mockerworkers in four configurations (KV routing aggregated, KV routing disaggregated, round-robin, and KV routing without a queue threshold), sent chat and completion requests, and scraped/metricson the frontend and both workers.
