fix(operator): preserve argv in multinode vLLM and SGLang shell wrappers - #17274
Multinode vLLM and SGLang containers can fail to start when an argv value contains a single quote, and empty argv values are dropped. The Ray leader wrapper in injectRayDistributedLaunchFlags and the shell-wrapped Python worker path in injectFlagsIntoContainerCommand (vLLM mp workers and SGLang workers under Grove) quote tokens with shellQuoteForBashC, whose '"'"' escaping is meant for the nested bash -c command the TensorRT-LLM mpirun launcher builds. Through a single sh -c layer it leaves the shell with an unterminated string.
Details:
Switch those call sites to shellQuotePOSIX, which already exists in utils.go, renders exactly one argv token that survives sh -c unchanged (empty strings and embedded quotes included), and is what the elastic-EP Ray launch already uses. The TensorRT-LLM nested-shell path is unchanged and keeps shellQuoteForBashC; its doc comment now says so.
One existing expectation changes: a JSON --kv-transfer-config value in the Ray leader command is now rendered single-quoted instead of double-quoted with escaped inner quotes. The shell delivers the same bytes either way.
New test TestMultinodeShellWrappersPreserveArgv renders the vLLM Ray leader, the vLLM mp Grove worker, and the SGLang Grove worker, then executes each wrapper through /bin/sh -c with a stub python3 that prints its argv, and checks the engine receives the original argv (single quote, empty value, JSON, globs, whitespace) followed by the injected flags with the Grove rank expression evaluated. No engine or GPU is involved.
This picks up the fix proposed in #15167, which was closed before review.
Validation
Before the fix all three subtests fail:
--- FAIL: TestMultinodeShellWrappersPreserveArgv/vllm_ray_leader
/bin/sh: -c: line 1: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `"'
--- FAIL: TestMultinodeShellWrappersPreserveArgv/vllm_mp_grove_worker
engine argv: ["-m" "dynamo.vllm" "--model" "models/it'\"s" "a" "model --tensor-parallel-size 8 --served-model-name --chat-template {{" ...]
--- FAIL: TestMultinodeShellWrappersPreserveArgv/sglang_grove_worker
engine argv: ["-m" "dynamo.sglang" "--model" "models/it'\"s" "a" "model --tensor-parallel-size 8 ..." ...]
After:
$ cd deploy/operator && gofmt -l internal/dynamo/ && go vet ./internal/dynamo/ && go test ./internal/dynamo/ -count=1
ok github.com/ai-dynamo/dynamo/deploy/operator/internal/dynamo
Where should the reviewer start?
deploy/operator/internal/dynamo/utils.go (injectFlagsIntoContainerCommand) and backend_vllm.go (injectRayDistributedLaunchFlags), then the new multinode_shell_argv_test.go.
Fixed command-line argument handling for distributed inference launches. Arguments containing spaces, quotes, JSON, shell characters, or empty values are now passed through unchanged.
Improved compatibility when launching commands through the system shell.
The Ray leader wrapper in injectRayDistributedLaunchFlags and the shell
wrapped Python worker path in injectFlagsIntoContainerCommand quoted
tokens with shellQuoteForBashC. Its '"'"' escaping is built for the
nested bash -c command the TensorRT-LLM mpirun launcher assembles. Through
a single sh -c layer it leaves an unterminated string when a value holds a
single quote, and empty values vanish.
Switch those call sites to shellQuotePOSIX, which renders one argv token
that survives sh -c unchanged and is already used by the elastic-EP Ray
launch. The TensorRT-LLM path keeps shellQuoteForBashC; its doc comment
now says what it is for.
TestMultinodeShellWrappersPreserveArgv runs each rendered wrapper through
/bin/sh with a stub python3 and checks the engine sees the original argv.
All three subtests fail before this change and pass after.
Picks up the fix from ai-dynamo#15167, which was closed before review.

👋 Hi lonexreb! Thank you for contributing to ai-dynamo/dynamo.
Just a reminder: The NVIDIA Test Github Validation CI runs an essential subset of the testing framework to quickly catch errors.Your PR reviewers may elect to test the changes comprehensively before approving your changes.
The change replaces Bash-specific quoting with POSIX quoting in the affected shell launch paths. Tests check that vLLM and SGLang wrappers preserve user arguments, including empty strings and shell-sensitive values.

Summary
POSIX quoting in shell launch paths deploy/operator/internal/dynamo/utils.go, deploy/operator/internal/dynamo/backend_vllm.go
The needsShell path and Ray leader launch now use shellQuotePOSIX for command and argument tokens. The helper comment clarifies its nested bash -c use.
The vLLM command expectation uses single quotes around the JSON argument. A shell-execution test checks argument preservation for vLLM leader, vLLM worker, and SGLang worker wrappers, including injected worker rank 1.
This change fixes argument handling for single quotes and empty strings in multinode vLLM and SGLang launches. One narrow case remains. If an environment-referenced argument expands to a value containing a single quote, the shell command is malformed and the engine will not start. This case was already broken before this change and is unlikely in practice, so it is a bounded follow-up rather than a merge blocker.

Explanation
Issue #16973 requires argv preservation for the multinode vLLM Ray leader, Grove vLLM multiprocessing worker, and Grove SGLang worker. The PR switches the single-shell paths to shellQuotePOSIX, which preserves empty values, quotes, whitespace, JSON, and shell metacharacters. The new TestMultinodeShellWrappersPreserveArgv executes all three rendered wrappers through /bin/sh -c and checks the original argv and evaluated worker rank. The TensorRT-LLM nested-shell path remains on shellQuoteForBashC, as required by the issue scope.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #16973. They update quoting at the affected call sites, clarify the nested-shell helper comment, update the related JSON expectation, and add focused shell-wrapper regression coverage. No unrelated flag parsing, TensorRT-LLM behavior, GPU validation, or inference-engine deployment work is introduced.

## Use environment variables to define arguments
In the preceding example, you defined the arguments directly by providing strings. As an alternative to providing strings directly, you can define arguments by using environment variables:
`env:
- name: MESSAGE
value: "hello world"
command: ["/bin/echo"]
args: ["$(MESSAGE)"]
`
This means you can define an argument for a Pod using any of the techniques available for defining environment variables, including ConfigMaps and Secrets.
#### Note:
The environment variable appears in parentheses, `"$(VAR)"`. This is required for the variable to be expanded in the `command` or `args` field.
## Run a command in a shell
In some cases, you need your command to run in a shell. For example, your command might consist of several commands piped together, or it might be a shell script. To run your command in a shell, wrap it like this:
`command: ["/bin/sh"]
args: ["-c", "while true; do echo hello; sleep 10;done"]

If you do not already have a cluster, you can create one by using minikube or you can use one of these Kubernetes playgrounds:## Define an environment dependent variable for a container ... To set dependent environment variables, you can use $(VAR_NAME) in the `value` of `env` in the configuration file. ... args:
value: "$$(PROTOCOL)://$(SERVICE_IP):$(SERVICE_PORT)"
`
1. Create a Pod based on that manifest:
`kubectl apply -f https://k8s.io/examples/pods/inject/dependent-envars.yaml
`
`pod/dependent-envars-demo created
`
2. List the running Pods:
`kubectl get pods dependent-envars-demo
`
`NAME READY STATUS RESTARTS AGE
dependent-envars-demo 1/1 Running 0 9s
`
3. Check the logs for the container running in your Pod:
`kubectl logs pod/dependent-envars-demo
`
`
UNCHANGED_REFERENCE=$(PROTOCOL)://172.17.0.1:80
SERVICE_ADDRESS=https://172.17.0.1:80
ESCAPED_REFERENCE=$(PROTOCOL)://172.17.0.1:80
`
As shown above, you have defined the correct dependency reference of `SERVICE_ADDRESS`, bad dependency reference of `UNCHANGED_REFERENCE` and skip dependent references of `ESCAPED_REFERENCE`.
When an environment variable is already defined when being referenced, the reference can be correctly resolved, such as in the `SERVICE_ADDRESS` case.
Note that order matters in the `env` list. An environment variable is not considered "defined" if it is specified further down the list. That is why `UNCHANGED_REFERENCE` fails to resolve `$(PROTOCOL)` in the example above.
When the environment variable is undefined or only includes some variables, the undefined environment variable is treated as a normal string, such as `UNCHANGED_REFERENCE`. Note that incorrectly parsed environment variables, in general, will not block the container from starting.
The `$(VAR_NAME)` syntax can be escaped with a double `$`, ie: `$$(VAR_NAME)`. Escaped references are never expanded, regardless of whether the referenced variable is defined or not. This can be seen from the `ESCAPED_REFERENCE` case above.

Keep kubelet-expanded arguments out of the shell script.
Kubelet expands $(VAR_NAME) before sh -c runs. For $(MODEL_PATH), shellQuotePOSIX produces a single-quoted script fragment. A value such as models/it's a model then produces an unmatched quote and prevents the engine from starting. The Ray leader has the same construction.
This is not a new root cause: the previous helper already corrupted this case by leaving a leading backslash in the substituted value. However, the new code still does not preserve kubelet-expanded arguments. Pass the original command and arguments as positional sh -c arguments, using a dummy $0 and "$@"; keep injected flags in the script so expressions such as $((GROVE_PCLQ_POD_INDEX + 1)) remain shell-evaluated. Add a test with an original $(MODEL_PATH) argument and a single quote in its environment value.

Previously reported defects still present:
Original discussion: The original command and arguments are still interpolated into the sh -c script after shellQuotePOSIX; kubelet substitution of a $(VAR) reference to a value containing a single quote can therefore produce malformed shell syntax.
Original discussion: The single-shell wrappers still embed kubelet-expanded $(VAR) arguments in single-quoted script text. If the environment value contains a single quote, kubelet substitution creates invalid shell syntax and the engine cannot start. Pass the original command and arguments as positional parameters to sh -c and execute them via "$@", while leaving only injected shell expressions in the script.
Original discussion: The unresolved argv-preservation defect remains present: kubelet substitutes $(VAR_NAME) directly into the generated sh -c script after shellQuotePOSIX has added literal single-quote delimiters, so an expanded value containing a single quote makes the script syntactically invalid. Passing the original command and arguments as positional parameters to sh -c while leaving only the injected arithmetic expression in script text avoids interpreting expanded values as shell source. As noted in the original discussion, this root cause predates the PR, so it is not a new finding.
Original discussion: Verified still present: kubelet substitutes $(VAR_NAME) inside the generated sh -c script after the token has been single-quoted. If the environment value contains a single quote, the resulting script has invalid quoting and the engine does not start; both the generic needsShell wrapper and the Ray leader wrapper retain this behavior. Pass the original command and arguments as positional shell arguments and reserve script text for the injected expressions that require shell evaluation.

Overview:
Summary
Multinode vLLM and SGLang containers can fail to start when an argv value contains a single quote, and empty argv values are dropped. The Ray leader wrapper in
injectRayDistributedLaunchFlagsand the shell-wrapped Python worker path ininjectFlagsIntoContainerCommand(vLLM mp workers and SGLang workers under Grove) quote tokens withshellQuoteForBashC, whose'"'"'escaping is meant for the nestedbash -ccommand the TensorRT-LLM mpirun launcher builds. shellQuotePOSIX, which already exists inutils.go, renders exactly one argv token that survivessh -cunchanged (empty strings and embedded quotes included), and is what the elastic-EP Ray launch already uses. The TensorRT-LLM nested-shell path is unchanged and keepsshellQuoteForBashC; its doc comment now says so.One existing expectation changes: a JSON
--kv-transfer-configvalue in the Ray leader command is now rendered single-quoted instead of double-quoted with escaped inner quotes. The shell delivers the same bytes either way.New test
TestMultinodeShellWrappersPreserveArgvrenders the vLLM Ray leader, the vLLM mp Grove worker, and the SGLang Grove worker, then executes each wrapper through/bin/sh -cwith a stubpython3that prints its argv, and checks the engine receives the original argv (single quote, empty value, JSON, globs, whitespace) followed by the injected flags with the Grove rank expression evaluated. No engine or GPU is involved. This picks up the fix proposed in #15167, which was closed before review.
