Summary

This PR lets an external host of SelectionService, such as ray, keep session affinity in sync across its SelectionService replicas. It reuses the replication hook the built-in mesh already has, so ray and the mesh share one replication model. Load accounting keeps working as before, through the host's own reservation broadcasts.

How it works

When a host sets session_replication_writer_id, each partition's session table gets the same bounded channel sink the mesh uses. The host reads that channel as an async stream from session_binding_updates(). The stream carries a binding whenever a session is bound, plus a TTL refresh whenever a request for that session finishes.

On the receiving side, the host passes each peer binding to apply_session_binding(). Selection service merges it, keeping the newest version by (sequence, writer_id). The host supplies the writer id, which keeps conflict resolution deterministic.

In ray, load and bindings now replicate separately. Reservations still go through create_reservation() exactly as before. Because bindings no longer ride along with reservations, a peer that skips a reservation, for example because the request already finished before the broadcast arrived, still receives the session's binding. That's why skip_load_booking introduced in 518aefe is no longer needed.

A few implementation details:

  • Misconfiguration: A selection service uses either host replication or the built-in mesh, can't be both, and host replication requires session affinity. The builder rejects either misconfiguration.
  • Soft vs. Hard affinity: No behavior changes after 14bd4d9 (identical to master). In Soft mode, if the request's allowlist excludes the worker a session is bound to, the service picks an allowed worker and rebinds. Hard mode is unchanged and still rejects the request.
  • Python binding: The Python binding exposes session_affinity_mode and session_replication_writer_id on the constructor, along with session_binding_updates() and apply_session_binding().

See benchmark results here: ray-project/ray#67224.

Known gaps

These aren't handled here. The first two gaps exist today and are shared with the built-in mesh.

  • Bindings that arrive too early are dropped. If a peer hasn't learned about the bound worker or partition yet, it drops the binding. On scale-up, that peer's next turn for the session can then bind somewhere else with a newer version and pull the session off its original worker on every replica. apply_session_binding deliberately returns no outcome, consistent with how the mesh behaves today; the plan is to fix this in the core in a follow-up.
  • Long requests can outlive a peer's copy. A peer's copy of a binding expires on the idle TTL even while the owner's request is still running.
  • The two step flow select() -> create_reservation() is out-of-scope.
  • Other eligibility rules, such as host callbacks, LoRA, or routing constraints and taints are also out-of-scope.

Validation

Tests passed locally.

Where should the reviewer start?

Most of the change is in lib/kv-router/src/services/selection/:

  1. service.rs: the builder checks in session_binding_replication(), plus session_binding_updates() and apply_session_binding().
  2. core/mod.rs: SelectionCore::with_session_binding_publisher, which creates the channel, and session_binding_sink, which gives each partition its sink when the partition is created (core/workers.rs).
  3. core/tests.rs: host_stream_publishes_bindings_and_refreshes, peer_bindings_converge_by_version, and soft_mode_follows_custom_policy .

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Session affinity can now be shared across routers, helping requests stay associated with the appropriate worker during routing and failover.
    • Session assignments can be applied even when load booking is skipped or fails.
  • Improvements
    • Session affinity now respects allowed-worker policies and can be updated when a bound worker is no longer eligible.
    • Reservation requests with no booking result return an empty response; successful reservations continue to include their details.

The core design looks right: bindings ordered by (sequence, writer_id), mirrored leases that don't republish, and stale reservations still booking their load. Two things I'd settle before merge: the binding-only mode of create_reservation, and bindings that are dropped silently on the skip path. The rest are suggestions.

dispatch_affinity_event drops the binding at trace! when this peer has no entry or affinity table for the partition, or hasn't upserted the worker yet, and the skip path still returns Ok(None). Under Ray's membership lag that breaks affinity on scale-up: B drops (W, vA) after observing its sequence, B's next turn binds elsewhere at a higher version, and the broadcast moves A off W too. Return the apply outcome (or an error for the reject cases) so the host can retry.

I left the outcome out. The mesh drops these bindings the same way, so a ray-only retry would make the two transports diverge again. The race can happen for both, so I'd rather fix it in the core in a follow-up. This is listed under known gaps in the PR description.

Requesting changes on the shape, not the mechanics. The session table already has a transport seam: AffinityReplicaSink out, apply_replica_update in, enable_replication(writer_id, sink) to wire it. The selection mesh (core/mod.rs:146, a bounded channel per partition via ReplicaSyncConfig::affinity_sink) and the frontend router both plug into it. I'd rather expose that seam to hosts than replicate in-band on the reservation calls:

  • Out: a host replication option that installs the same bounded channel sink per partition and hands Ray the receiving end as an async stream, instead of feeding the mesh. Hot-path cost stays one try_send; no Python callback, no GIL.
  • In: apply_session_binding(binding) → dispatch_affinity_event, returning the apply outcome. This supersedes my inline comments on skip_load_booking and the silent drops.
  • Writer id: supplied by the host through enable_replication, so no random default.

What goes away: skip_load_booking, the Option/204 return on create_reservation, session_binding on ReservationRequest and SelectResponse, acquire_mirrored_reservation_lease, and publish_binding_on_release. Bindings and load replicate independently, so completion-before-reservation is no longer a binding problem, and Ray and the mesh share one replication model: publish on commit, TTL refresh on release.

The one thing mirrored leases add is keeping a peer's binding alive while a request outlives the TTL. The mesh doesn't do that today either; if it matters, fix it for both transports rather than only this path.

Ah makes sense! Wasn't aware of this existing transport path. Now addressed in f13adc1.

  • In: apply_session_binding() → dispatch_affinity_event. The writer id is supplied by host which created the selection service instance, with no random default.
  • Out: session_replication_writer_id installs the same bounded AffinityMeshSink per partition, and Ray reads it through session_binding_updates().

Thanks for the rework. The shape looks right to me: host replication reuses the mesh's session-sync seam in both directions.

  • Outbound: each partition still gets an AffinityMeshSink through enable_replication. The host just takes over draining the channel.
  • Inbound: apply_session_binding goes through the same dispatch_affinity_event and version merge as the mesh.
  • Builder guards: it requires affinity, can't be combined with replica_sync, and takes a host-supplied writer id. These look good.

I benchmarked this path the way Ray's ingress uses it (ray-project/ray#67224 at 53b9942e4f). I measured at e8f3b88; a2d4ad3 only merges main and leaves these paths unchanged.

Setup:

  • 1 and 4 processes, each embedding SelectionService.
  • 1,024 mocker workers publishing vLLM KV events, with AgentX multi-turn sessions.
  • Soft affinity with a 1,800 s TTL.
  • Ray Serve's limit of 1,000 ongoing selections per ingress.

Under load the binding stream drops a large share of bindings:

bindings forwarded dropped at the sink
1 replica 49,547 42,059 (46%)
4 replicas, per replica 33.5k–34.1k 23.6k–26.8k (41–44%)

Batching the stream removed the drops, and the 4-replica cache hit ratio went from 0.89 to 0.925 (one replica: 0.93). Details are inline.

  • Requested: batch the stream, make drops visible, and make apply_session_binding synchronous.

Non-blocking, for context: the larger effect in the same run is on the Ray side and predates this PR.

  • _apply_replica_updates awaits one update at a time. Under load, each replica applied about 240 updates/s against about 730/s arriving, lag reached 122 s, and every peer reservation was skipped as already completed.
  • The hit ratio at 4 replicas was 0.64 as written, and 0.89 with each round applied concurrently.

One more question, separate from the requested changes: did you consider using the built-in replica mesh from Ray instead of carrying replication over Ray RPC?

The Python binding on main already exposes it: SelectionService(replica_sync_port=..., replica_sync_peers=...), plus register_replica_peer / deregister_replica_peer for live membership. It replicates what Ray's peer broadcasts and lifecycle fan-out carry today:

  • Load: reservations with their sequence hashes, prefill completion and frees, published by the replica that routed the request. Output-block progress isn't replicated, but Ray has it off by default.
  • Session bindings: merged by the same version rule as apply_session_binding.

On Ray's side, that would mean passing its replica membership to register_replica_peer, and sending lifecycle events only to the ingress that routed the request. Peer create_reservation calls and the host stream here would no longer be needed. The only piece Ray would still need from this PR is session_affinity_mode on the Python constructor.

Perf impact, from the same benchmark as above (4 ingress processes, with peer updates applied concurrently and the batched stream):

  • Time per request. For each request a replica routes, its main thread spent 8.1 ms with 4 replicas, against 4.7 ms with one replica. About 3.2 ms of that is peer replication: unpickling peers' updates, the peer create_reservation / apply_session_binding calls and their awaits, and pickling its own broadcasts.
  • Scaling. That cost grows with the number of peers, because every replica applies every other replica's requests on its event loop. Throughput went from 214 req/s with one replica to 446 req/s with four, about 112 per replica. If the per-peer cost keeps growing linearly, total throughput levels off at roughly 600–700 req/s however many replicas are added.
  • On the mesh. Peer updates are batched and applied on Rust threads without taking the GIL, so each replica's event loop pays only for its own requests. I haven't measured this from Ray's side yet, but I'd expect throughput to scale close to linearly with the number of replicas.

If something rules out the mesh for Ray, such as opening a ZMQ port on each replica, the requested changes above still apply.

Did you consider using the built-in replica mesh from Ray instead of carrying replication over Ray RPC?

Yeah, but we ruled it out at the time because the ray RPC approach is simpler and doesn't require ray serve framework changes.

Peer updates are batched and applied on Rust threads without taking the GIL.

Make sense. I'll evaluate this mesh approach.

I'd prefer merge this PR in and evaluate this in ray separately as there may require framework-level changes. Running E2E benchmark on AgentX in the meanwhile to verify the latest fixes.

The binding drops happen because dynamo publishes bindings on the routing path using non-blocking try_send into a channel capped at 4,096. once the channel fills up, new bindings are dropped until the session publishes again.

fcafcc7 fixes two issues:

  • Drops: Batching drains the entire channel per wakeup, reducing drops to 0%.
  • Lag: Peers previously applied updates sequentially, causing up to 133 s of lag. synchronous apply and ray's per-round apply reduce it to 0.1 s.
    • The lag also hurts KV hit rate because session pinning only works if peers receive bindings before the next turn. Batching alone kept KV hit rate at 0.40, while Ray's per-round apply alone improved it to 0.80.

re: the issue reported in #16969 (review)

I was able to repro the issue by using ray serve LLM with 4 ingress replicas, 64 mocker engines (LLMServer running MockerEngine, each with a in-process dynamo mocker), and 640 concurrent sessions replaying AgentX at 850 requests/s and confirmed that ray-project/ray@b6f2a69 and fcafcc7 together resolves the issue.
