fix(torch): honor config.cache_dir for AOT module caches and clear_cache - #155
The AOT tuning guide (docs/guides/aot_tuning.md, Global Configuration) says to set config.cache_dir to move the cache, and AITuneConfig has a setter for it, but AOT tuning never read it. Module._module_cache_dir() and _clear_cache() in tuning.py both called aitune_cache_dir(), which returns the AITUNE_CACHE_DIR value fixed at import time. So per-graph caches, backend build directories and TensorRT engines still landed in ~/.cache/aitune (or wherever the env var pointed), and tune(..., clear_cache=True) deleted that directory rather than the configured one. The pre-flight check_disk_space(config.cache_dir) in reporting did use the config, so it checked a different directory, possibly on another disk, than the one being written to.
A short script on main shows it. With AITUNE_CACHE_DIR pointed at a temp dir and config.cache_dir set to another temp dir, Module(nn.Linear(2, 2), name="lin").cache_dir came back under the env directory, and _clear_cache() left the configured directory alone while removing the env one. With this change the module path is under the configured directory and only that one is cleared.
The fix makes both call sites read config.cache_dir when they run. To keep the default following AITUNE_CACHE_DIR, AITuneConfig now stores None until a directory is set and falls back to aitune_cache_dir() on read, the same pattern tuning_data_output_path already uses. to_dict() reports the resolved path so the tuning report snapshot does not show None. JIT mode is untouched because it has its own jit_config.cache_dir, and aitune_cache_dir() itself still returns the env based default.
The root aitune_cache_dir fixture patches _AITUNE_CACHE_DIR, which is why the existing tests never noticed this. It now also resets config._cache_dir, so a test that sets config.cache_dir cannot leak it into the next one and the default still resolves to the per-test temp directory. As a side effect the disk space check in tests now looks at the temp directory too, not the real user cache.
New tests: test_tune_uses_configured_cache_dir in tests/unit/torch/module/test_wrapper_module.py checks that module.cache_dir and the graph cache passed to the strategy are under the configured directory, and test_tune_clear_cache_removes_configured_cache_dir in tests/unit/torch/test_tuning.py checks that clear_cache=True removes the configured directory and leaves the default one. test_snapshot_config_declarative_mode now asserts the resolved cache_dir value instead of just the key. The two new tests fail on main and pass with the change.
I tested on macOS with CPU only torch, with TensorRT, Torch-TensorRT, ModelOpt and Triton stubbed out so the modules import. tests/unit/torch and tests/unit/utils give 48 failed and 1703 passed, against 48 failed and 1701 passed on main, and the failing set is identical (tests that need the real TensorRT stack or a working torch.compile, which fail in this environment either way). ruff 0.16.5 check and format pass on the changed files, and pyrefly reports the same errors as on main. I have not run the GPU functional tests.
A CHANGELOG entry is added under 0.7.0.

Bug Fixes
AOT tuning now stores module caches in the configured cache directory and clears that directory when requested, rather than using a separate default location.
Configuration output now reflects the cache directory that will be used when no directory has been explicitly set.
The AOT tuning guide tells users to set aitune.torch.config.cache_dir,
but Module._module_cache_dir() and tune(..., clear_cache=True) both
called aitune_cache_dir(), which only returns the AITUNE_CACHE_DIR value
captured at import. Graph caches, backend builds and engines therefore
went to ~/.cache/aitune (or the env path) whatever the config said, and
clear_cache removed that directory instead of the configured one. The
disk space check in reporting already looked at config.cache_dir, so it
checked a different directory (possibly on another disk) than the one
being written to.
Both call sites now read config.cache_dir at call time. The config keeps
None until a directory is set and falls back to aitune_cache_dir() on
read, the same way tuning_data_output_path already works, so the default
still follows AITUNE_CACHE_DIR. to_dict() reports the resolved path. JIT
mode is unchanged since it uses its own jit_config.cache_dir.
The autouse aitune_cache_dir fixture also resets config._cache_dir, so
tests that set config.cache_dir do not leak it into later tests and the
default path keeps pointing at the per-test temporary directory.

Walkthrough
Cache directory resolution now uses the configured directory when set and resolves the environment-based directory when unset. Module cache paths and cache clearing use that configuration.

Summary
Resolve and report the cache directory aitune/torch/config.py, tests/unit/torch/tune_data/test_reporting.py
An unset cache directory is stored as None. Reading cache_dir resolves the current aitune_cache_dir(), and to_dict() reports the resolved value.
Use the configured directory for module caches aitune/torch/module/wrapper_module.py, aitune/torch/tuning.py, conftest.py, tests/unit/torch/module/test_wrapper_module.py, tests/unit/torch/test_tuning.py, CHANGELOG.md
Module cache paths and cache clearing use global_config.cache_dir. Tests cover configured paths and cache clearing. The changelog records the fix.
With this change, clear_cache=True deletes whatever directory config.cache_dir points to. If that is a shared location, unrelated files are lost. Clearing should be limited to an AITune-owned subdirectory before merging. Smaller issues remain: samples recorded before clearing can become stale, and a symlinked cache directory makes tuning fail.
