fix(checkpoint): omit original weights from JIT checkpoints - #154
Experiment: stop storing orig_module.state_dict() in new Torch eager, TorchInductor JIT, Torch-TensorRT JIT, and TorchAO checkpoints. This targets the duplicate GPU weights observed during the FLUX.2 load failure.
ait.load(model_or_pipeline, checkpoint) keeps its API. These backends now reuse supplied weights instead of overwriting them. Callers must supply the original pretrained weights. Configuration and warmup samples remain saved; compilation/quantization still rebuilds on load.
These backends also ignore embedded orig_module weights in legacy checkpoints and always use the supplied model weights. AOT artifacts and untuned-module handling are unchanged. Regression tests cover all four serializers, new/legacy supplied-weight preservation, and CPU eager model/pipeline round trips. GPU lifecycle tests now supply matching weights for JIT backends.
Validation
Full CPU unit suite and production doctests on Python 3.11.12: 2,023 passed, 244 skipped, 1 xfailed.
Focused backend and checkpoint tests after the review correction: 383 passed, 175 skipped.
Pre-commit, including Ruff: passed.
Changed-file Pyrefly: zero errors. Full Pyrefly matches unmodified main: 11 existing errors and 9 stale baseline entries.
CI: all 18 checks passed; GPU unit suite: 2,238 passed, 14 skipped, 1 xfailed; functional GPU suite: 70 passed, 13 xfailed. Python 3.11–3.14 CPU matrix passed.
Still to verify
The functional save_load matrix does not select inductor-jit or torch-tensorrt-jit. Their serialization is covered by unit tests; Inductor JIT reload/inference is also exercised by GPU checkpoint tests. Full functional save/load coverage for both compiled JIT backends is a follow-up.
Recreate the FLUX.2-klein-4B checkpoint with this change, load it into the same pretrained pipeline, compare outputs, and measure peak GPU memory. Existing checkpoints retain their original weight copies. This VM has no CUDA device; no GPU memory reduction or successful FLUX load is claimed.
GitHub signature verification currently reports unknown_key; the VM's bot committer differs from the saved user signing key.
Torch eager, TorchInductor JIT, Torch-TensorRT JIT, and TorchAO checkpoints no longer include original model weights. Load the matching pretrained weights into your model or pipeline before restoring; different weights may produce different tuned outputs.
JIT compilation and TorchAO quantization run again during loading. Original weights saved in older checkpoints are ignored. AOT artifacts and untuned-module handling are unchanged.

Walkthrough
Four Torch backends no longer include original-module weights in new checkpoints or restore saved weights into the supplied module. Documentation and tests describe and verify loading with supplied weights, including legacy checkpoint handling.

The four backends omit original-module weights from new checkpoints and do not load saved weights into the supplied module. Unit tests cover new and legacy checkpoint formats and verify supplied model state.
Round-trip tests load into preserved model and pipeline copies. Parameterized tests check loading into caller-supplied weights for direct and wrapped models.
Reload guidance and lifecycle tests docs/guides/deployment/checkpoints.md, tests/functional_ci/AGENTS.md, tests/functional_ci/lifecycle.py, tests/functional_ci/test_pipelines.py
The guide and functional test description specify matching weights for JIT backends. Lifecycle tests select the reload model seed based on build mode.
Update the checkpoint documentation before merge so eager and TorchAO users also load the matching pretrained weights; otherwise the example can successfully produce outputs that differ from the tuned model.

Exercise both JIT backends in functional save-load tests.
test_backend_lifecycle and test_pipeline_lifecycle select with_backends("save_load"), but neither inductor-jit nor torch-tensorrt-jit has that tag. No existing functional test therefore covers the changed JIT reload branches through compilation, save, reload, and inference.
Both backends support this flow. They restore the supplied module and checkpoint metadata, then compile again when activated. Add the save_load tag to both JIT entries. Apply strict backend or version exclusions for any documented CI failure.

Load pretrained weights for all four backends.
The example currently requires pretrained weights only for JIT checkpoints. Torch eager and TorchAO checkpoints also omit original weights and retain the supplied module. A fresh or differently initialized module can therefore load successfully but produce outputs that do not match the tuned checkpoint.

Update the pretrained-weights guidance in the deployment checkpoint example to
cover Torch eager, TorchInductor JIT, Torch-TensorRT JIT, and TorchAO
checkpoints, rather than limiting it to JIT backends.
Make the reload assertion distinguish supplied weights.
The original model uses seed 0, and the JIT reload now also uses seed 0. A loader that incorrectly restores the checkpoint weights can therefore still produce expected. Use a different reload seed and compare JIT output with the supplied model's output. Keep the original expectation for AOT backends.

Update the reload setup in the lifecycle test to use a model initialized with
seed 1 and capture its output as the supplied-model expectation. After loading,
compare JIT backend output with that captured output to distinguish supplied
weights from checkpoint weights, while preserving the existing expected-output
comparison for AOT backends.
Add both compiled JIT backends to the save_load matrix.
test_backend_lifecycle and test_pipeline_lifecycle select only backends with the save_load tag. inductor-jit and torch-tensorrt-jit have only base and jit, so neither test reaches ait.load(model_factory(seed=0), checkpoint) for these backends. The changed JIT seed path is therefore untested for them.
This is separate from the same-seed assertion gap: adding the tags exercises the compiled JIT reload path, while the same-seed inputs still do not distinguish supplied-weight reuse from checkpoint-weight restoration.

Update the core guide's Save and Load sections for the four backends that omit original weights.
docs/learn/core_functionalities.md says checkpoints store and restore original module weights. For Torch eager, TorchInductor JIT, Torch-TensorRT JIT, and TorchAO, new checkpoints no longer contain them. The guide's Load example builds SimpleModel() with random initial weights and calls ait.load(model, "tuned_model.ait"). With these backends, the restored model keeps those random weights, so its outputs do not match the tuned outputs. No error is raised.
