Why and what changed

Nightly 41024152657 completed all 28 FPE shards, then failed because required probes hardcoded TRT-LLM 1.3.0rc23, which #517 removed from the queryable inventory.

Required probes now select current. After verifying the installed source wheel, discovery resolves that alias through the selected source's own SDK and verifies each concrete probe belongs to its inventory. It records a plan containing the resolved versions and source/tooling/wheel identities. Packaging validates and consumes that plan, then records the exact probes in fpe-qualification.json.

Main and each release follow their own version policy automatically. For the failing main wheel, the SDK selects vLLM 0.30.0, SGLang 0.5.21, and TRT-LLM rc29; the 0.12.0 wheel selects 0.24.0, 0.5.14, and rc20. No concrete backend versions remain in the required-probe policy.

Review map

  • Risk level: medium; discovery-to-packaging contract.
  • Start with scripts/fpe/run_release_fpe.py, then both FPE workflows and their behavioral tests.
  • Internal artifact contract: discovery now emits fpe-release-probes.json. Main passes it through a job output; release qualification includes it in the existing wheel artifact. The qualification receipt adds required_probes.
  • Missing current versions/inventory entries, altered selectors, incomplete plans, and mixed source/tooling/wheel identities fail. The existing concrete-version qualifier still requires one topology to pass all four phases; passing previous versions cannot replace a failed current probe.
  • Uses the SDK exported by the selected source's support-matrix harness, preserving old aiconfigurator and new aisimulate package compatibility. Packaging needs no installed SDK.

Evidence

Tested tree: 21a26d764a21b0c2109dfab7b520abbfff1c9f95.

  • Python 3.12 with hash-locked scripts/ci/requirements.txt: python -m pytest -c /dev/null tests/test_ci_workflow_contracts.py tests/test_ci_qualification.py tests/test_release_fpe.py -q -p no:cacheprovider --override-ini="filterwarnings=error" — 477 passed.
  • PYTHONPATH=python/aisimulate python -m pytest -c /dev/null --confcutdir=python/aisimulate/tests/unit/support_matrix python/aisimulate/tests/unit/support_matrix/test_fpe_qualification.py -k 'not source_provenance and not installed_native_fpe' -q -p no:cacheprovider -o 'markers=unit: unit tests' — 38 passed, two installed-runtime/source tests excluded.
  • Regression coverage: current-version promotions, higher development versions, missing current/inventory, mixed identities, dropped/duplicated probes, unresolved aliases, CLI discovery/package round-trip, JSON handoff, and failed current + passing previous remains rejected.
  • Installed the exact downloaded main and release 0.12.0 wheels in isolated environments. Their actual SDK resolvers and inventories produced different source-appropriate current-version plans.
  • Replayed the revised discovery/packaging helpers against all 28 original main reports: 4/4 required probes qualified; 1,013,410 results produced 4,941 web rows / 10 system CSVs. Versions were resolved from the wheel before reading results; reports were unchanged.
  • Replayed release 0.12.0's three B200 backend reports using its own wheel and plan: 4/4 required probes passed. This is a release subset check, not a full release rerun. Separately inspected actual current-version sentinel results for releases 0.12.0, 0.12.1, and 0.13.0 from run 41033854931; all passed.
  • Ruff lint/format, documentation links, whitespace, copyright, and packaged legal-file checks passed.
  • Codex: independent review of the submitted runtime/workflow changes found no blocking issues. CodeRabbit and hosted CI for the new head are pending. Full nightly has not been rerun.

Modeling or data provenance

No performance model, measurements, or acceptance thresholds change. Local replay uses the original main source 7980e9500c00d9f85d7f296451d12768a743c70e and wheel SHA256 0024814558525b7216d3b17437ddbfeb6b3288631d4e5526a9fca1105a56d00f, with revised local qualification tooling. Existing unsupported/missing-data results remain visible. Qualification does not establish predictive accuracy or universal support.

📝 Summary

Risk: Moderate. Three areas need human attention:

  1. Confirm each selected source resolves current to a queryable version for all four required probes.
  2. Check that discovery and packaging preserve the probe plan’s source, tooling, and wheel provenance.
  3. Confirm hosted CI results and rerun the full nightly qualification before merge.

Behavior and contract

The manifest no longer pins backend versions. It sets all four required probes to current. Discovery resolves each version through the selected source’s SDK and rejects identities that are absent from that source’s inventory. Packaging validates the captured plan and records the resolved probes in fpe-qualification.json.

The contract requires one concrete resolved probe per selector. It rejects missing or extra probes, altered selectors, unresolved versions, and mismatched provenance. It does not use the previously described current/previous collection-slot or system-override rule.

Evidence

The author reports 450 passing tests in the specified CI test command and 38 passing qualification checks. Two installed-runtime/source tests were excluded. The author also reports that replaying the unchanged qualifier and package_reports() against the 28 original artifacts reproduces the old-manifest failure and passes all four sentinels with the proposed change. Release reports reportedly show all-four-phase coverage for both affected models on releases 0.12.0, 0.12.1, and 0.13.0.

The inspected implementation confirms source-specific version resolution, inventory checks, provenance validation, and probe-plan handoff through the workflow. It does not independently verify the reported test or replay results.

Quality and merge readiness

The change updates qualification policy and provenance handling. It does not establish universal support or change performance models, measurements, thresholds, or report rows.

Hosted Fast CI checks are reported as pending, and the full nightly has not been rerun. Current review severity counts are unavailable.

Required FPE probes now resolve current against the selected source inventory. Discovery writes a provenance-bound probe plan. Packaging validates and consumes that plan, records resolved probes in qualification output, and receives the plan through the release workflows.

Changes: FPE required probe resolution and packaging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve and validate required probes
.github/fpe-required-probes.json, scripts/fpe/run_release_fpe.py, tests/test_release_fpe.py
Required probe selectors use current. Discovery resolves concrete versions against the selected source inventory and validates plan provenance, selector coverage, and concrete versions.
Validate plans and record qualification probes
scripts/fpe/run_release_fpe.py, tests/test_release_fpe.py
Packaging validates the captured plan against expected provenance and wheel identity. Qualification receives the resolved probes, which are recorded in the output. Tests cover invalid provenance, incomplete probes, older passing versions, and CLI plan handoff.
Pass probe plans through release workflows
.github/workflows/fpe-support-matrix.yml, .github/workflows/fpe-release-qualify.yml, docs/ci/release.md, tests/test_ci_workflow_contracts.py
The support-matrix workflow passes and writes the probe plan. The release qualification artifact includes the plan. Documentation and workflow contract tests describe and verify the handoff.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: Low · up to 21a26

Probe-plan handoff is intact, but tests still do not cover system-specific version overrides or invalid selector policies. These bounded coverage gaps warrant follow-up before relying on the new qualification contract.

Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence

Explanation

The PR changes probe-version selection and qualification provenance, not a performance model, formula, or prediction output. It supplies reproducible evidence: exact source and wheel identities, a before/after replay against the 28 existing report artifacts, sentinel coverage and row-count summaries, and the old-manifest failure versus the maintained-version pass. The changed tests also verify current resolution through the selected source, concrete-version validation, provenance binding, and captured-plan packaging.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

No compatibility boundary is crossed. The PR changes only FPE policy, qualification tooling, workflows, tests, and release documentation; no Python/Rust source, binding, Cargo, or pyproject file changes are present. run_release_fpe.py keeps wheel identity validation and only passes a captured probe plan between discovery and packaging (lines 160-173, 231-248). The workflows still enforce one AISimulate wheel (fpe-support-matrix.yml:98-100) and retain the documented one-wheel plus one-aisimulate-core-crate release contract (docs/ci/release.md:11-18, 73-75). The new probe-plan artifact is an internal qualification handoff and is validated against source, tooling, and wheel provenance.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The description names the exact pytest commands and results, including 450 and 38 passes. It reports negative and boundary checks: the old rc23 manifest reproduces the missing-sentinel failure, rc20 passes, provenance and version cases are rejected, and the full nightly was not rerun. It separates local tests, replay/parity of the 28 artifacts, and actual release-qualification reports; it also states that hosted Fast CI checks were pending. The cited FPE workflows are not inactive: the main reusable workflow is called by scheduled/manual nightly CI, and the release reusable workflow is called by scheduled/manual release-nightly CI. No inactive nested workflow is cited as hosted evidence.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and aligned with the changes. It explains the problem, behavior change, affected contracts, review path, tests, boundary cases, provenance, and related work. Some template fields are not labeled exactly, such as separate Fast CI and Full CI entries, but the required information is present or clearly identified as pending.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract

Explanation

The release reproduction documentation is stale. scripts/fpe/run_release_fpe.py now requires fpe-release-probes.json for packaging by default (lines 215 and 247), and the release workflow uploads that file ( .github/workflows/fpe-release-qualify.yml lines 65-72). However, docs/ci/accuracy.md lines 294-298 tells users to preserve only fpe-release-wheel/ and fpe-release-shards.json. A reproduction that follows the documented artifact handoff cannot package the qualification because the captured probe plan is missing. The changed Python, workflow, serialization, and CLI paths have tests, but this affected documentation consumer was not updated.

Resolution

Update docs/ci/accuracy.md to include fpe-release-probes.json in the retained release artifact and explain that packaging consumes this captured plan. Add or extend a documentation/workflow contract test so the release reproduction instructions remain synchronized with the artifact path and --required-probes default.

Test override precedence and rejected versions.

All current probes use default slots, so this test never exercises an override. Add fixture-driven checks that accept an override version and reject a version available only in the default, including an override with previous: null.

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • Maintained version slots define current/previous as queryable aliases, while next is development-only; consumers are expected to use aliases rather than literals. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docs/perf_database/collector-v3-op-centric-design.md:630-646]
  • Tests and fixtures use TRT-LLM 1.3.0rc20, confirming it remains an active compatibility version. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::tests/integration/test_memory_estimation.py:44]

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • Dynamo’s wheel smoke test uses backend_version: current, consistent with the PR’s resolved-current approach. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::tests/wheels/smoke_install.py:428]
  • No direct references to the new FPE probe-plan files, functions, or EXPECTED_PROBES contract were found. The change appears localized to AISimulate’s release workflows and qualification tooling.

Add direct tests for the selector policy guards.

required_probe_selectors() rejects three policy shapes: an empty selector list, a backend_version other than current, and duplicate selectors. No inspected test passes these shapes to the function. The committed policy file is valid, so the guards never fire during the existing tests. Removing or weakening any of the guards can leave the current suite passing.

A literal version in the committed policy file does fail the existing discovery test, because discover_required_probes() calls the guard. That failure does not wait for the live discovery job.

Add a parametrized test that points the module's ROOT at a temporary policy file and asserts the ValueError for each bad shape:

Review comment at @scripts/fpe/run_release_fpe.py around lines 117 - 120:
Add a parametrized test for required_probe_selectors() that writes each invalid
selector shape—an empty list, a non-current backend_version, and duplicate
selectors—to a temporary policy file, points RELEASE.ROOT to its directory, and
asserts the function raises ValueError.
