feat: model vLLM async-scheduling admission in replay - #624
vLLM enables async scheduling by default since v0.14. Its engine then keeps a batch queue of two (VllmConfig.max_concurrent_batches at pipeline parallelism 1): while one batch runs, the next is already committed. EngineCore.step_with_batch_queue commits another batch as soon as it has processed the oldest batch's outputs, and only then does the busy loop read newly arrived requests. Replay admitted every arrival at the next pass.
engine.workers.<role>.scheduler.async_scheduling mirrors --async-scheduling. Unset, it resolves vLLM's default: on, except with ngram drafts, where vLLM turns it off and rejects an explicit true. vLLM only; SGLang and TensorRT-LLM reject it.
With it on, an arrival joins only a pass that vLLM had not committed when the arrival came in. While a pass runs, that skips the queued pass. An arrival at a pass boundary counts as a reaction to that pass's outputs, such as a closed-loop client's next request, and also skips the pass committed there; an open-loop arrival that lands exactly on a pass end is therefore admitted one pass late. An idle engine admits the arrival at the next pass, and so does an engine whose queued pass has no other work, because vLLM runs that empty batch at once. FCFS order is kept.
The skips follow from the batch-queue depth, not from tuning. async_scheduling: false keeps the previous admission exactly.
P/D prefill submissions follow the same rule. Decode roles admit received KV handoffs as before.
Attribution: the behavior is a modified simulation of vLLM v0.28.0 contracts; THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md (and its packaged copy) and the scheduler file headers record the revision.
This is engine-core scheduling, not replay-level async settlement.
Review map
Risk level: high (default behavior change for every vLLM replay)
Start with: crates/core/src/engine/scheduler/vllm/core.rs (first_pass_admitting_arrival, the check in the waiting loop, prefill_capacity_bound), then crates/core/src/engine/config.rs (async_scheduling, max_concurrent_batches) and crates/core/src/python.rs (resolve_ngram_async_scheduling).
Public or serialized contract changed: yes, additive. EngineConfig::async_scheduling: Option<bool> (omitted when unset) and the YAML field.
Compatibility or rollback concern: vLLM replays admit later under load, so TTFT rises. Dynamo's mocker builds EngineConfig with struct-update syntax (..EngineConfig::for_backend(backend) at the pinned revision def3b79b) and keeps compiling, but it gets the same default when it bumps aisimulate; async_scheduling: false keeps its previous behavior. Three tests that pin synchronous timelines now set it to false explicitly.
Evidence
Tests (Linux x86 VM, Rust 1.96.1, commit e02cdae; the Rust suites ran on 16c5d67ec, whose crates/ is identical): cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo test --workspace (core 2,367 passed) and cargo test --workspace --features embed-python,replay-bench with AIC_REQUIRE_EMBEDDED_ROUND_TRIP=1 (core 2,456 passed) pass with no failures; cargo test --manifest-path crates/tests/public-api/Cargo.toml passes (21). Perfmodel parity suites pass with goldens unchanged (test_engine_step_parity.py 304, test_compile_engine_parity.py 85); native prediction sentinels report 16 cases, 0 failures. ruff check, ruff format --check and scripts/ci/check_packaged_legal_files.py pass. Python tests/ and python/aisimulate/tests -m unit fail exactly the same tests as main on that host (204 and 72; they fail on main too) and run 14 new cases.
Fast CI:
Full CI:
CodeRabbit reviewed commit: e02cdae. Its six findings (docs wording, AFD+P/D companions accepting an unmodeled true, non-boolean values reaching ngram normalization) are fixed in d748b63; tests/test_runner.py, test_afd_cli.py, test_ngram_cli.py and test_cli_config.py pass on it (919).
Codex reviewed commit: cc7ef3b57. Its one finding (P2): the ngram default and rejection ran only for AIC timing, so fixed or polynomial timing kept async admission on; e02cdae resolves it in the runner while the speculation kind is still known, and Codex's re-review of e02cdae closed the finding with nothing new. An earlier independent Claude review of 6a5ef5419 found no high or medium issues and suggested the preemption test.
New tests: async_scheduling_admission (mid-pass skips one pass, boundary skips two, synchronous and idle engines admit at the next pass, an empty committed batch admits queued arrivals together, a preempted request resumes at the next pass while a newer arrival waits), async_scheduling_defaults_to_vllm_and_sets_the_batch_queue_depth, ngram_drafts_turn_vllm_async_scheduling_off, test_ngram_turns_vllm_async_scheduling_off_for_every_timing_model (fixed, polynomial and AIC timing; aggregated and disaggregated; an explicit true is rejected), test_afd_plus_pd_companion_rejects_async_scheduling, test_runner_rejects_non_boolean_async_scheduling, test_ngram_admits_a_busy_engine_arrival_at_the_next_pass (an end-to-end replay where a request arrives mid-pass: 20 ms with ngram drafts or async off, 30 ms under the default), Python config and runner cases.
Source: vLLM v0.28.0 (2cf0a6915ce5): vllm/config/vllm.py (max_concurrent_batches, default resolution), vllm/v1/engine/core.py (run_busy_loop, _process_input_queue, step_with_batch_queue), vllm/v1/core/sched/scheduler.py (async scheduling does not schedule a step past max_tokens). The GT container's copies of these files are byte-identical to the tag.
An empirical rule that always skipped two passes for a busy arrival fitted G1k TTFT better (6.8 / 7.8 / 7.6). It stood in for the frontend round trip beyond engine.tokenization (GT idles 11.0 ms at 1k and 26.4 ms at 8k between a request's last output and the next prefill, against 5.0 and 13.8 ms of modeled tokenization), so this PR keeps vLLM's rule.
Cost: per arrival one pass-number computation, per pass a counter, and per examined waiting head one integer comparison read in the waiting loop's existing request lookup; no scan of deferred requests. Native wall_time_ms, release builds of be2f2a5 and this PR, paired alternating runs on an idle VM, median ratio to the base with async off / on: Exp1 1k c256 0.995 / 0.997 and 8k c64 1.001 / 0.973 (5 runs); 1k c1 control 0.985 / 1.027, where the base binary against itself gives 0.976 (21 runs); synthetic 512/128 closed loops with about 0.8k, 3.8k and 16k waiting requests 0.949–1.013 / 1.005–1.064 (3 runs), and a 400 req/s Poisson overload 0.998 / 1.015 (9 runs). Host cost per output token rises from 0.52 to 0.66 µs as the waiting queue grows, equally on the base. With async_scheduling: false the 18 Exp1 replays equal the base request for request.
Modeling or data provenance
Replay gates admission by pass number. It does not model the committed batch's own capacity reservation, its cancellation, or when its outputs reach the client.
Engine replay does not model pipeline parallelism, which deepens vLLM's batch queue, nor the frontend output and request path beyond engine.tokenization.
TensorRT-LLM's PyTorch executor overlaps scheduling with the running batch by default and so also admits a busy engine's arrivals one pass later; replay does not model that overlap.
vLLM enables async scheduling by default since v0.14. Its engine core then
keeps the next batch committed behind the running one and commits another
as soon as it has processed a batch's outputs, so a request arriving at a
busy engine misses the batches already committed. Replay admitted every
arrival at the next pass. engine.workers.<role>.scheduler.async_scheduling
mirrors --async-scheduling; unset, it follows vLLM's default, which is off
with ngram drafts. false keeps the previous admission.

📝 Summary
Risk level: Medium. Human attention should focus on:
Admission timing at pass boundaries, including queued batches, preemption, idle engines, and empty committed batches.
The public configuration contract across vLLM, other backends, ngram speculation, and AFD+P/D companion workers.
The scope and reproducibility of reported test and performance results.
What changed
Replay now models vLLM async-scheduling admission. The Rust configuration adds optional EngineConfig::async_scheduling; Python adds SchedulerPredictionConfig.async_scheduling. When unset, vLLM uses a two-batch queue, except that ngram speculation resolves the setting to false. Explicit true with ngram speculation is rejected. Other backends reject the setting, and AFD+P/D validation rejects true on a companion worker. The setting is documented and forwarded through worker configuration.
The vLLM scheduler tracks the first pass eligible to admit each request. Added tests assert that busy-engine arrivals skip one pass when submitted mid-pass and two at a pass boundary. They also cover synchronous admission, preemption, idle engines, and empty committed batches. These source assertions do not establish that the tests ran.
Evidence and readiness
The returned source output confirms the configuration field, vLLM batch-depth rule, backend validation, Python validation, and admission-test cases. It does not show the full admission implementation or the complete test bodies.
The PR objectives report passing Rust formatting, workspace and public API tests, and describe Python test failures as matching failures on main on that host. They also report performance and replay comparisons. These results were not independently verified. Current review findings and severity counts were not supplied.
Technical quality: The reported changes cover the configuration contract and key admission cases. Human review should verify the pass-boundary behavior against the complete implementation and tests.
Merge readiness: The supplied evidence does not establish review approval or merge readiness. The test requests are not approval.
The change adds a vLLM async_scheduling setting and models how committed batch depth affects request admission across scheduler passes. Replay configuration carries the setting. For vLLM n-gram speculation, replay disables it unless it was explicitly enabled, which raises an error.
EngineConfig adds optional async_scheduling and derives max_concurrent_batches: vLLM uses two batches unless scheduling is disabled; other backends use one. Validation rejects explicit settings for non-vLLM backends. Scheduler arguments pass the derived depth to the mock engine.

Replay configuration validates and forwards async_scheduling. For vLLM n-gram speculation, the Rust and Python paths disable the setting unless it was explicitly enabled, which raises an error. Tests cover backend checks, worker and timing modes, and request admission timing.
Documentation describes vLLM’s admission rules and defaults. Tests that assume synchronous admission set the setting to false. The notices record the source and license for the admission adaptation.

The description includes all required template sections and provides detailed behavior, review guidance, contract changes, compatibility risks, test evidence, provenance, and tracking information. The Fast CI and Full CI fields are blank, but the overall description is complete enough to pass.
Full details: Compatibility Boundaries
Explanation
The prior schema mismatch is fixed. Python declares SchedulerPredictionConfig.async_scheduling as StrictBool | None (engine.py:149-155), and the public tests reject integer and string values. The compiler omits None and forwards booleans (compiler.py:714-731). Rust accepts the matching Option<bool>, defaults it to None, omits unset serialization, and maps it to the vLLM batch depth (config.rs:628-632, 739-740, 861-873, 917-925). Backend validation and ngram normalization are present on both paths. Documentation matches these defaults. The diff changes no versions, manifests, dependencies, wheel/crate packaging settings, or Dynamo imports; the existing maturin one-wheel/one-crate configuration remains unchanged. Attribution notices were added to both repository and packaged copies. Prior failure addressed: StrictBool | None now enforces the Python/Rust boolean contract. Public config tests reject non-boolean values, while compiler.py and Rust serde preserve true/false and omit None.
Full details: Cross-Layer Contract
Explanation
The e2e-accuracy forwarding path remains untested. The PR adds async_scheduling to ENGINE_FIELDS and forwards every present role argument in scripts/e2e_accuracy/source/replay.py:8-21,24-50. The reviewed diff adds no tests under tests/e2e_accuracy_source, and the existing direct engine_args test at tests/e2e_accuracy_source/test_mtp.py:153-169 verifies only MTP fields. It does not verify forwarding of async_scheduling: true, async_scheduling: false, or omission of the field. This violates the cross-layer contract requirement that each new path be tested.
Resolution
Add focused engine_args tests for an aggregated or disaggregated role with async_scheduling: true and async_scheduling: false, asserting each value is present in the returned engine arguments. Add a case where the role omits the field and assert the returned arguments omit it.
Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence
Explanation
The PR provides vLLM provenance, but its validation is binary-only. The new Rust and Python tests hard-code expected pass counts and admission times in the same simulation (crates/core/src/engine/scheduler/vllm/tests.rs:1226-1292, tests/test_ngram_cli.py:203-241). The description reports test counts and unchanged goldens, but it supplies no golden diff, independent vLLM oracle comparison, held-out cases, or machine-readable before/after data with anomaly checks. The attribution notice (THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md:318-332) establishes source provenance only.
Resolution
Add a reproducible evidence artifact for fixed inputs that records base and head admission passes/times, configuration, case counts, and anomaly checks. Explain every changed result. Alternatively, run vLLM v0.28.0 at the pinned commit as an independent oracle and publish the machine-readable comparison and command used to reproduce it.
Full details: Review Evidence
Explanation
The visible description names relevant commands and results, gives negative and boundary coverage, and leaves the Fast CI and Full CI fields empty. However, the supplied description is explicitly truncated in the Evidence section. The missing text could contain the hosted-CI claims needed to check for inactive nested workflows, and it may contain the required fake-runner and production-evidence distinctions. The repository policy also states that only root .github/workflows/ workflows are hosted CI; imported workflows below python/aisimulate/ are provenance (REVIEW.md:138-140).
Resolution
Provide the complete PR description, or confirm the omitted Evidence and review text. The complete text must show exact commands and results, identify local/fake-runner/parity/production evidence, and must not present inactive nested workflows as hosted CI evidence.

- Around line 217-220: Update the async_scheduling documentation to state that
replay does not model capacity reservations for committed batches, so admission

is enabled; place this limitation alongside the pipeline-parallelism limitation.
- Line 195: Update the replay scheduler documentation sentence describing when a

that it joins that batch, since capacity checks can delay admission.

Replay loads engine arguments through normalize_mocker_config and carries separate aggregated/prefill/decode payloads, making this the downstream compatibility boundary for the new field. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/replay/config.py:37-39] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/replay/simulation.py:345-360]
The replay API exposes these payloads as generic mappings rather than a fixed scheduler schema. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/replay/api.py:58-64] No existing async_scheduling or max_concurrent_batches references were found.
ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator
EngineConfig has no async_scheduling or max_concurrent_batches fields. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/config.rs:83-155]
The Python builder emits a fixed engine payload containing backend, parallelism, quantization, database, and speculative fields, but no scheduler-admission setting. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/engine.py:256-319]
The compiled engine identity similarly carries nextn and performance-model identity, not scheduler admission. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/rust_engine_step.py:940-1015]
AFD+P/D companions are priced by the companion model, which ignores async
scheduling, so an explicit true is now rejected. The runner rejects a
non-boolean async_scheduling before ngram normalization could replace it.
The docs separate replay's default from vLLM's wider default, state the
output-delivery assumption, describe the earliest eligible batch, and note
that the queued batch reserves no capacity.

Reject non-boolean async_scheduling values at the configuration boundary.
async_scheduling: bool | None uses non-strict Pydantic parsing. Values such as 1 and "true" can become True instead of raising an error. The compiler then forwards the coerced value, which can silently change replay admission timing. The base StrictModel only forbids extra fields, and Pydantic enables coercion unless strict validation is requested. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Use StrictBool | None or Field(strict=True). Add public configuration tests for integer, string, and float inputs.
As per path instructions, ambiguous input must fail loudly rather than silently selecting another behavior.

Replay engine arguments cross into Dynamo as generic mappings and are normalized before execution; no fixed scheduler schema blocks the new field. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/replay/config.py:37-39] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/replay/simulation.py:345-360]
Dynamo’s vLLM instrumentation already reads and records scheduler_config.async_scheduling, confirming runtime awareness of the vLLM field. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/vllm/instrumented_scheduler.py:424-438]
The standard mocker CLI builder has an explicit engine-field allowlist that does not include async_scheduling; this setting is therefore not emitted through that CLI construction path. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::components/src/dynamo/mocker/config.py:67-85]
ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator
The frozen EngineConfig wire contract contains flattened parallel, quantization, and speculative fields, but no async-scheduling or concurrent-batch field. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/config.rs:75-116]
Its speculative contract is limited to nextn, and the Python builder emits only that speculative setting. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/config.rs:214-224] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/engine.py:256-319]

Why and what changed
vLLM enables async scheduling by default since v0.14. Its engine then keeps a batch queue of two (
VllmConfig.max_concurrent_batchesat pipeline parallelism 1): while one batch runs, the next is already committed.EngineCore.step_with_batch_queuecommits another batch as soon as it has processed the oldest batch's outputs, and only then does the busy loop read newly arrived requests. Replay admitted every arrival at the next pass.engine.workers.<role>.scheduler.async_schedulingmirrors--async-scheduling. Unset, it resolves vLLM's default: on, except with ngram drafts, where vLLM turns it off and rejects an explicittrue. vLLM only; SGLang and TensorRT-LLM reject it.async_scheduling: falsekeeps the previous admission exactly.THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md(and its packaged copy) and the scheduler file headers record the revision.Review map
