The performance model priced every non-expert GEMM of a Nemotron-H model with one global precision. It priced every MoE layer with one mode too, and the vLLM collector could not measure the latent-width NVFP4 MoE of Nemotron 3 Super and Ultra at all. Published Nemotron checkpoints are not uniform. In Super NVFP4, for example, the Mamba input projection is FP8 in 28 layers and BF16 in 12, attention QKV is BF16, and the attention output projection is FP8 in 2 layers and BF16 in 6. This PR prices each projection and routed-expert layer of Nemotron-H at the precision its checkpoint declares, through a shared resolver that Qwen3.5/3.6/3.8 and Gemma 4 also use. It refreshes the packaged Super and Ultra NVFP4 and Super FP8 configs to the published files that carry that metadata. It also lets the vLLM collector measure the Super and Ultra NVFP4 MoE on the native ModelOpt kernel. On a GB200 GPU, the new MoE cases returned measured latencies for 324 of 324 strict SILICON queries, where shipped data returned 0.

This PR includes the two commits of #620 unchanged and supersedes it.

It also merges #645 at c9465fb5, which adds the vLLM w4a16_nvfp4 GEMM collector lane and rows for Nemotron 3.5 Lightning's shared experts, together with main up to that PR's base add6fca1.

Why and what changed

  • SDK, models/nemotron_h.py:

    • Each decoder GEMM is resolved per layer from checkpoint metadata: Mamba in_proj and out_proj, attention QKV and o_proj, shared-expert up and down, latent fc1 and fc2, and dense MLP up and down.
    • Layers with different precisions get one operation each. Same-name operations sum, so latency and weight bytes equal the per-layer total.
    • The fused modules of one op (for example Q, K and V) must resolve to the same mode after the exclusion and unlisted rules. Otherwise the model raises. An excluded Q with unlisted K and V in a targets-only export is BF16 for all three and loads.
    • Routed-expert layers split by precision only when they differ. The MoE and its dispatch operations then carry each layer's mode.
    • An unlisted projection is BF16 only in a targets-only ModelOpt export, as vLLM and SGLang load it. Excluded modules and routed-expert layers are BF16, and a parent-module exclusion covers its projections. Without per-layer metadata, every projection keeps one operation in the global mode.
    • A W4A16_NVFP4 projection is priced as w4a16_nvfp4, the weight-only lane, as vLLM serves it with BF16 activations.
    • Routed experts that a ModelOpt export lists as W4A16_NVFP4 stay w4a16_nvfp4 on vLLM, in uniform and mixed listings. vLLM 0.24.0, 0.30.0 and 0.31.0 build ModelOptNvFp4FusedMoE with use_a16 for them, and only the Marlin backend accepts that scheme. The older vLLM remap of W4A16_NVFP4 NemotronH experts to nvfp4 now skips ModelOpt exports, recognized by an hf_quant_config.json quantization section or a modelopt* quant_method. Other formats, other backends and explicit modes keep their previous behavior.
    • A self-contained modelopt* MIXED_PRECISION config is treated as a targets-only listing, as vLLM loads it.
    • On non-Blackwell systems, NVFP4 runs weight-only per bucket, as the global mode does.
  • Explicit modes still win:

    • An explicit GEMM mode bypasses the per-layer resolution, as before.
    • An explicit MoE mode now does the same. ModelConfig._moe_quant_mode_is_explicit records it, set by Task the same way as the existing GEMM flag.
  • model_configs/: these files are now unmodified copies of the published files.

    Model Files Hugging Face revision
    Super NVFP4 config.json, hf_quant_config.json ff433f5493e25d631c9f12b5d55c674229923d02
    Ultra NVFP4 config.json, hf_quant_config.json 02462641f13d3af838b904f48195b9bb8a1e4ebc
    Super FP8 config.json, hf_quant_config.json 744b1880a37996c5d56bf454ae164dfd74d77c4e

The old copies had dropped the per-layer listings and exclusions.

  • Collector, collect_moe.py, framework_manifest.yaml and the NemotronH cases:

    • Native ModelOpt dispatch for Nemotron-H NVFP4: ModelOptMixedPrecisionConfig with the real routed-expert prefix, or ModelOptNvFp4Config for uniform checkpoints.
    • A vLLM 0.31.0 collector runtime for the Super and Ultra NVFP4 paths.
    • vLLM nvfp4 MoE cases at the latent widths, 1024 for Super and 2048 for Ultra.
    • Lightning NVFP4 is no longer collected as vLLM nvfp4, because its experts are W4A16_NVFP4.
    • The vLLM w4a16_nvfp4 MoE mode also covers Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-NVFP4, whose routed experts are W4A16_NVFP4 at the fused mlp.experts prefix. The collector resolves the prefix through the checkpoint's own ModelOptMixedPrecisionConfig. The mode adds 39 Lightning and 42 Qwen3.6 case groups of 27 token counts each.
    • Nano NVFP4 moves from the synthetic CompressedTensors method to native ModelOptNvFp4FusedMoE, so its kernel_source label changes.
    • The perf-table finalization merge treats string and large_string columns as the same type and keeps the existing table's schema. Before, a shipped large_string table merged with new string rows was replaced, together with its provenance history, instead of appended to.
  • Shared per-layer precision, sdk/models/checkpoint_precision.py:

    • The Nemotron-H code is moved into a shared module: metadata parsing and cache, per-layer projection and routed-expert resolution, and bucketed GEMM/MoE helpers. A family declares its layer kinds, the checkpoint modules each op prices and its checkpoint paths. Nemotron-H behavior is unchanged.
    • Qwen3.5 (and Qwen3.6, Qwen3.8) and Gemma 4 now use it instead of their per-category modes, for their projections and routed experts. Routed-expert buckets are kept per layer kind.
    • Qwen decode overlaps the routed and shared experts per layer. Each layer kind keeps one overlap op per joint (routed, shared gate_up, shared down) precision signature, priced for its own layer count.
    • A module also takes its precision from a listed descendant (for example <module>.weight or <experts>.0.up_proj), as vLLM's ModelOptMixedPrecisionConfig prefix lookup does. An exact listing wins, and descendants that disagree are a conflict.
    • A compressed-tensors FP8 config group with strategy: block or block_structure resolves to the fp8_block GEMM and MoE modes, per layer and in the global mixed-precision helper, instead of per-tensor FP8. No packaged config has such a group.
    • Packaged checkpoints change in two places, both to match how vLLM loads them. Gemma-4-26B-A4B-NVFP4 routed experts move from BF16 to NVFP4: the old .mlp substring match treated the excluded shared MLP as covering the experts, but the checkpoint's experts carry NVFP4 scales. Qwen3.6 GDN in_proj_ba moves from FP8 to BF16 because its targets-only listing leaves in_proj_b/in_proj_a out. All other packaged Qwen3.5/3.8, Gemma 4 and unquantized configs are op-for-op identical (60 of 78 model, system and backend combinations unchanged; the other 18 are these two changes).

Review map

  • Risk level: medium
  • Start with:
    • CheckpointPrecision.rows, layer_projection_modes and layer_moe_modes in sdk/models/checkpoint_precision.py.
    • The family wiring in sdk/models/nemotron_h.py, qwen35.py and gemma4.py, then the op builders.
    • The nvfp4 branch chain in collector/vllm/collect_moe.py.
  • Public or serialized contract changed:
    • No new perf columns or files.
    • SDK predictions change for Nemotron-H, Qwen3.5/3.6/3.8 and Gemma 4 checkpoints with per-layer metadata.
    • Nano NVFP4 rows carry a different kernel_source.
  • Compatibility or rollback concern:
    • Lightning NVFP4 in strict SILICON mode now fails with GEMM perf data missing for quant 'w4a16_nvfp4'. It worked before only because every GEMM was priced in one FP8 lane. HYBRID works.
    • Among packaged models, the expert change affects only Lightning NVFP4 on vLLM. Its MoE moves from nvfp4 (nvfp4_wo on non-Blackwell) to w4a16_nvfp4. No vLLM MoE table has w4a16_nvfp4 rows.
    • The Gemma-4-26B-NVFP4 expert fix adds 135 blocking gate rows: there is no NVFP4 MoE data for Gemma's shape on SGLang Blackwell, and on Hopper, L40S and RTX PRO 6000 the gate's system-less model path keeps the native FP4 lane, which those systems cannot model (as for Super and Ultra NVFP4 on main). vLLM Blackwell rows only drift.
    • Prediction Regression Gate, on this branch rebased onto current main (vLLM current 0.30.0): 45 blocking rows. All are Lightning NVFP4 with the default quant, 9 each on b200_sxm, b300_sxm, gb200, gb300 and rtx_pro_6000_server, OK -> DATA_MISS. No other row is blocking.
    • With the merged feat: collect vLLM w4a16_nvfp4 GEMM rows for Nemotron 3.5 Lightning #645 GEMM rows, the 18 b200_sxm and gb200 rows now fail first on missing w4a16_nvfp4 MoE data (topk 6, 128 experts, hidden 2688, inter 1856, MoE TP1/EP8). The 27 b300_sxm, gb300 and rtx_pro_6000_server rows still fail first on the dense w4a16_nvfp4 GEMM, which feat: collect vLLM w4a16_nvfp4 GEMM rows for Nemotron 3.5 Lightning #645 does not cover for those systems. Clearing these rows needs vLLM w4a16_nvfp4 MoE rows on all five systems and GEMM rows on the other three, or a maintainer override. HYBRID still estimates both lanes through the existing cross-profile transfer.
    • This PR adds a vLLM w4a16_nvfp4 MoE collector mode for Lightning (ModelOpt W4A16 experts, expected on Marlin, from SM80). Its case grid is the shared 27-point MoE token grid (1 to 16384). Of the eight distinct gate query sizes, the five up to 8192 can become exact after measurement. The prefill sizes 65536, 131072 and 262144 stay boundary extrapolation beyond 16384. A gate that passes after data lands does not prove every query is exact or that serving accuracy is validated.
    • The verbatim configs grow the uncompressed model_configs/ files by about 28 MB.

Evidence

  • Tests: test_nemotron_mixed_precision.py covers the following.

    • Exact per-layer projection counts on the published Super and Ultra exports, in prefill and decode, on GB200 and H200.
    • Weight bytes.
    • Latency additivity for split GEMMs and for split routed MoE plus dispatch, through RustForwardPassPerfModel.
    • Uniform and no-metadata parity, and fused-QKV disagreement.
    • Explicit GEMM and MoE overrides, through get_model and Task.
  • Related suites: the model-config, mixed-precision-target, Task and collector tests are updated for the new resolutions.

  • CI at 87fd65ce: every job except the Prediction Regression Gate passed, including all application-test shards. "Full CI Success" failed only because of the gate.

  • CI at 1ea4cf74: Fast CI, static checks, repository policy and codeowners pass. The full suite was still running when this text was written.

  • test_checkpoint_precision_families.py covers Qwen3.6 and Gemma 4 per-layer buckets on GB200 and H200, explicit overrides, the canonical RustForwardPassPerfModel.best_available path, per-signature Qwen decode overlaps, listed descendants, effective-precision fused compares and block-FP8 config groups.

  • Local test runs: collector tests must be run from python/aisimulate as CI does. Run from the repository root, the registry-integrity and SGLang MLA tests fail on their relative paths, not on a defect.

  • Local Prediction Regression Gate on the rebased head against current main, with the full tier-1 grid: 45 REGRESSION (above), 405 STATUS_CHANGE and 567 DRIFT (report only). The status changes are NVFP4 models on systems without FP4 tensor cores moving from INVALID to DATA_MISS.

  • Before and after through the public API. Same packaged tables, gb200, vLLM 0.31.0, TP2, op_level, per-op latency.

Model Mode Prefill total Decode total Changed ops
Super NVFP4 HYBRID -0.8% +0.6% Mamba, attention, shared and latent GEMMs
Ultra NVFP4 HYBRID +0.0% +0.3% attention and latent GEMMs
Nano NVFP4 SILICON +3.2% -1.8% excluded Mamba and attention layers now BF16
Super FP8 SILICON -4.2% +0.1% excluded latent and attention GEMMs now BF16

Nemotron models without per-layer metadata, such as Nano BF16, Ultra BF16 and FP8, and Nemotron-H-56B, are unchanged.

  • Model construction on repeated get_model calls: Super NVFP4 34 ms, Ultra NVFP4 42 ms, against 42 ms and 51 ms before. The parsed checkpoint metadata is reused per loaded config.

  • GB200 collector run with vLLM 0.31.0, one measured GPU on an exclusive node, seed 1234 in every collector task:

    • Super and Ultra NVFP4: TP1 and TP2 at EP1 each produced 81 rows (27 token counts x 3 distributions) on ModelOptNvFp4FusedMoE with relu2_no_mul.
    • Strict SILICON after import: 324 of 324 exact. Shipped data answers 0.
    • main plans no eligible cases.
    • Nano on its vLLM 0.24.0 runtime: the native and previous methods gave a same-run latency ratio with a median of 1.00. This does not claim the two methods are equivalent.

Modeling or data provenance

  • Collector rows are measured op latency on GB200. TP2 is a per-rank sharded shape on one GPU, not two-GPU serving.
  • The GPU run used the same published metadata that this PR packages. It ran before the final SDK changes, which do not touch the collector path.
  • Limits:
    • MTP layers use the decoder precision.
    • Per-op diagnostics fold same-name buckets and report the source mixed.
    • Only the MoE op was qualified on vLLM 0.31.0, although the runtime pin covers every collector op for these two models.
    • TP4 and TP8 were not measured. No serving or accuracy comparison was run.
    • Model families other than Nemotron-H, Qwen3.5/3.6/3.8 and Gemma 4 keep their existing precision handling.
    • The routed-expert precision of a layer comes from expert 0.
  • Attribution: the refreshed configs are unmodified copies of NVIDIA's published Hugging Face files at the revisions above. This PR does not add THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md entries for them. Maintainers must decide whether the repository attribution rule requires those entries.

📝 Summary

Risk level: High. The three areas that need the most human attention are:

  1. Nemotron-H per-layer precision resolution, especially exclusions, metadata fallback, fused QKV consistency, and explicit overrides.
  2. ModelOpt routed-MoE dispatch and vLLM 0.31.0 collection, including the Lightning and Nano NVFP4 changes.
  3. Refreshed checkpoint metadata and its effect on model defaults and latency pricing.

Changed behavior and contracts

  • Nemotron-H can now price projections and routed experts using checkpoint per-layer precision metadata. It groups operations by precision and scales each group by its layer count.
  • Explicit gemm_quant_mode and moe_quant_mode override per-layer metadata. When applicable metadata is absent, the existing global-mode behavior remains. Excluded experts resolve to BF16, and non-Blackwell NVFP4 uses the weight-only nvfp4_wo lane.
  • Conflicting precision declarations for fused QKV modules fail loading. The implementation also rejects unsupported algorithms and incomplete metadata in the described cases.
  • The collector adds ModelOpt NVFP4 dispatch for Nemotron-H and pins Super and Ultra NVFP4 vLLM cases to 0.31.0. Lightning NVFP4 is not collected as vLLM nvfp4; Nano NVFP4 uses native ModelOptNvFp4FusedMoE.
  • Packaged Super and Ultra NVFP4 metadata and Super FP8 configuration are refreshed. The expected Ultra NVFP4 GEMM mode changes to FP8-static.
  • No exported declarations are reported as changed. The internal _moe_quant_mode_is_explicit field and the additional raw_config argument to resolve_vllm_moe_execution_mode affect configuration provenance and mode resolution.

Evidence and merge readiness

Technical quality: The supplied summary reports tests for precision parsing and fallback, operation counts, weight totals, latency additivity, fused-QKV consistency, explicit overrides, collector dispatch, and runtime pins. Execution results for these tests are not supplied.

The author reports that a GB200 run produced 324/324 strict SILICON answers after import, compared with 0 using shipped data. TP4 and TP8, serving, and accuracy comparisons were not run. Only the MoE operation was qualified on vLLM 0.31.0. The author also reports that strict SILICON lacks performance rows for the w4a16_nvfp4 lane; HYBRID estimates from another profile.

Merge readiness: Fast and full CI were reported as pending. Current review findings and severity counts were not supplied. Those counts and test outcomes are unavailable; bot review is not approval. The reported measurements do not cover TP4/TP8, serving, or accuracy, so they do not establish broader operational readiness.

Nemotron-H now uses checkpoint metadata to resolve projection and routed-expert precision and price operations by layer. The vLLM collector handles supported Nemotron NVFP4 metadata and expert prefixes. Model-case configurations and runtime pins are updated for Nemotron NVFP4 variants.

Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence

Explanation

The PR supplies provenance and reproducible non-binary evidence. The authored description names immutable Hugging Face revisions for the refreshed Super NVFP4, Ultra NVFP4, and Super FP8 files. The collector manifest pins vLLM 0.31.0, its source commit, and image digest (framework_manifest.yaml:256-265). The new tests provide machine-readable precision summaries for both published NVFP4 models and assert exact per-layer buckets, layer totals, explicit-mode overrides, and weight totals (test_nemotron_mixed_precision.py:438-483). They also use an independent weighted-uniform latency reference for mixed projection and MoE pricing (:216-254, :537-576). Collector tests check case counts, latent widths, native ModelOpt dispatch, metadata prefixes, and W4A16 exclusion (test_getter_deduplication.py:466-525). The documentation records known missing-data behavior for strict SILICON and HYBRID modes (limitations.md:64-71), so the evidence does not rely only on the reported external latency run.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

No compatibility-boundary failure is introduced. The PR changes only Python, collector data, documentation, and packaged JSON files; it does not change Cargo manifests, PyO3 bindings, Rust schemas, or the Maturin artifact layout. resolve_vllm_moe_execution_mode adds raw_config as an optional parameter, so existing three-argument callers remain valid. The new _moe_quant_mode_is_explicit field is private, keyword-only, excluded from representation and comparison, and is not a Rust or serialized schema field. The wheel remains configured from python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml (Maturin extension and Python packages at lines 105-123), and the crate remains aisimulate-core version 0.13.0 in crates/core/Cargo.toml lines 4-18. The documented release contract still specifies exactly one aisimulate wheel and one aisimulate-core crate (README.md lines 423-439; docs/ci/release.md lines 8-28). Linked Dynamo consumes ModelConfig through keyword arguments (commit 008d356966dc3cd77198d7f47b6f9d949ab44d6a, components/src/dynamo/planner/monitoring/aic_estimator.py lines 74-81), and its exact crate dependency remains an external release-consumer concern, not a changed interface in this PR.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is mostly complete. It covers the change, review map, compatibility risks, evidence, data provenance, and tracking. The evidence section does not list exact test commands or a CodeRabbit-reviewed commit, and the required Codex-reviewed commit is missing for this medium-risk change. It also does not state the final full-CI outcome.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract

Explanation

The prior cross-layer failure remains unresolved. The PR adds the production run_moe_torch path that constructs ModelOptMixedPrecisionConfig and sets the checkpoint-derived moe_prefix before passing both to FusedMoE (python/aisimulate/collector/vllm/collect_moe.py:738-745, 881-896). The changed collector tests cover metadata loading, prefix derivation, and dispatch guards, but do not call run_moe_torch or assert the FusedMoE constructor arguments (python/aisimulate/tests/unit/collector/test_getter_deduplication.py:515-610). The existing import-surface tests only exercise import compatibility and an early TP/EP validation failure (python/aisimulate/tests/unit/collector/vllm/test_collector_import_surface.py:220-231), so they cannot detect a constructor or runtime-prefix mismatch. This leaves the new native mixed-precision collection path untested end to end.

Resolution

Add a focused collector test that invokes run_moe_torch with stubs for vLLM, FusedMoE, and ModelOptMixedPrecisionConfig. Assert that Super and Ultra MIXED_PRECISION inputs construct the native config and pass backbone.layers.<layer>.mixer.experts as the FusedMoE prefix. Retain coverage for companion-config fallback, uniform NVFP4 dispatch, and W4A16 rejection. If execution is hardware-only, add an equivalent pinned-runtime integration test and record its result.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The supplied PR description is explicitly truncated. The visible portion reports a test file, 324/324 strict SILICON results, negative scope (TP4/TP8, serving, and accuracy not run), and pending CI, but it does not establish the complete command names, evidence classifications, or whether omitted text cites an inactive nested workflow as hosted CI evidence.

Resolution

Provide the complete PR description, including the exact validation commands and results, the local/fake-runner/parity/production classification of each result, and any hosted CI claims. Then verify that no inactive nested workflow is presented as hosted CI evidence.

…sion from checkpoint

Shared experts and the fc1/fc2 latent projections inherited the global GEMM
mode. Read their precision from the checkpoint metadata: quantized_layers
listings, config-group and Linear targets, exclusions, and model/backbone/
language_model path prefixes. An unlisted projection is BF16 only for a
targets-only MIXED_PRECISION export; other metadata keeps the global mode.
NVFP4 resolves to nvfp4_wo on non-Blackwell systems. Explicit gemm_quant_mode
and non-latent MoE keep the current behavior. Layers that disagree are
rejected because one aggregated operation cannot represent them.

Signed-off-by: Alexandre Milesi <milesial@users.noreply.github.com>
Emit one same-name GEMM per checkpoint precision, counting the MoE layers at
that precision, instead of rejecting layers that disagree. Same-name ops fold
additively, so the buckets sum to the per-layer cost. Conflicting or
unsupported algorithms for one module path are still rejected.

…s checkpoint precision

Resolve Mamba in/out, attention QKV and output, shared-expert, latent and
dense MLP projections per layer from checkpoint metadata, and split routed
MoE layers by precision when they differ. Explicit GEMM and MoE modes still
override the checkpoint, and metadata without per-layer information keeps one
operation per projection.

…ions weight-only

Count explicitly excluded routed-expert layers as BF16 in every metadata
format, and keep the global MoE mode only when every layer resolves to it.
Untargeted experts keep the global mode outside a targets-only export, and
per-layer experts reuse the global mode's backend mapping.

Keep listed W4A16_NVFP4 projections on the weight-only w4a16_nvfp4 lane:
vLLM 0.24.0 and 0.31.0 run them on FP4 Marlin with BF16 activations. vLLM
has no collected rows for that lane, so strict SILICON prediction for
Nemotron 3.5 Lightning reports missing data and HYBRID estimates it.

Parse the checkpoint once per model, apply parent-module exclusions, reject
invalid target regexes with ValueError, and document the per-layer
precision scope and its limits.

Nemotron 3.5 Lightning NVFP4 declares its shared-expert projections as
ModelOpt W4A16_NVFP4. The SDK already queries them as the w4a16_nvfp4
GEMM mode, but the vLLM GEMM collector could not measure that mode.

The collector now builds this lane through vLLM's own ModelOpt
MIXED_PRECISION dispatcher. Activations stay BF16. kernel_source records
the kernel that vLLM selects: Marlin at 0.24.0-0.27.1, and FlashInfer
CuTe-DSL W4A16 or Marlin at 0.30.0/0.31.0. The run raises if vLLM builds
an activation-quantized layer.

- Add the six Lightning shared-expert (n, k) sites at TP1/4/8 to the
  NemotronH GEMM model cases.
- Add the w4a16_nvfp4 SM80 capability floor and the two kernel-source
  backend entries.
- Admit vLLM 0.30.0, the current query-slot version.
- Seed the synthetic GEMM inputs and weights.

The GEMM collector now admits vLLM 0.30.0. Update the three tests that pin

…lane on vLLM

vLLM 0.24.0, 0.30.0 and 0.31.0 build ModelOptNvFp4FusedMoE with use_a16 for
ModelOpt W4A16_NVFP4 experts, and only the Marlin weight-only backend
accepts that scheme. Skip the w4a16_nvfp4 -> nvfp4 vLLM remap for ModelOpt
exports, so uniform and per-layer expert listings keep w4a16_nvfp4 and
mixed W4A16/NVFP4 layers keep distinct MoE and dispatch buckets. Other
checkpoint formats, other backends and explicit modes are unchanged.

Among packaged models this changes only Nemotron 3.5 Lightning NVFP4 on
vLLM. No vLLM MoE table has w4a16_nvfp4 rows, so its strict SILICON
prediction reports missing MoE data and HYBRID estimates it.

Match vLLM's ModelOpt method family (quant_method starting with

modelopt_mixed_precision_targets accepted only an absent, modelopt or

kept unlisted projections and experts on the global mode. Accept the

check does, while still rejecting checkpoints that declare a separate

…00 and GB200

Add 444 measured w4a16_nvfp4 GEMM rows per table: the six Lightning
shared-expert (n, k) sites at TP1/4/8, each over the 74 base token counts.

- b200_sxm and gb200, vLLM 0.30.0: collect.py merged the rows into the
shipped tables (148962 -> 149406 rows) and appended one collection event.
The shipped rows, runtime and earlier events are unchanged. The text
columns are now stored as large_string; their values are unchanged.
- b200_sxm, vLLM 0.31.0: a new table with only the w4a16_nvfp4 rows. Other
GEMM dtypes for this version are not measured here.

vLLM selected FlashInferCuteDslNvFp4W4A16LinearKernel at both versions on
both GPUs. Collector commit 9d81c45, collector_hash sha256:3e50fb87,
case_plan_hash sha256:0da6da79, seed 0, 0 failed cases. The op-backend facts
registry gets the three new slices.

Signed-off-by: Alexandre Milesi <milesial@users.noreply.github.com>
The w4a16_nvfp4 lane runs from SM80, because Marlin FP4 supports GPUs
from SM75. Its weight preparation called vLLM's scaled_fp4_quant, which
needs an SM100+ quantization kernel (nvfp4_quant_sm_supported). So the
lane failed on A100, L40S, H100 and H200 before vLLM ran the GEMM.

Below SM100, the collector now builds the same checkpoint layout with
vLLM's PyTorch reference quantizer, ref_nvfp4_quant. The body of that
function is the same in every admitted release. The collector packs the
E2M1 values low nibble first, in the layout of vLLM's break_fp4_bytes.
On SM100+, the lane keeps scaled_fp4_quant with the same arguments as
before.

Tests use real torch tensors. They decode packed bytes with an
independent E2M1 decoder, and they check that below SM100 the reference
quantizer runs with the ModelOpt global scale and scaled_fp4_quant does
not run. The tests are skipped when torch is not installed.

The development dependencies constrain pytest to `<9.2`: pytest 9.2's
`monkeypatch` cleanup deletes forwarded model and memory attributes instead of
restoring them. Keep this bound until compatibility-module patch restoration
passes with a newer pytest release.

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • Frozen collector policy excludes vLLM NVFP4 for Super and Ultra because both use top-k 22, above the pinned FlashInfer limit of 10. The PR’s native ModelOpt vLLM path is therefore a deliberate compatibility-policy change that should not fall back to FlashInfer. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::collector/cases/models/NemotronHForCausalLM_cases.yaml:107-132] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::collector/cases/models/NemotronHForCausalLM_cases.yaml:232-258]
  • The frozen Nemotron-H model routes latent experts through moe_latent_size, while shared experts and latent projections use the global GEMM mode. This is the baseline that the PR’s per-layer pricing behavior extends. The vLLM pin does not apply to mamba2.

The Nemotron mamba2 operation is declared under TRT-LLM and is registered to collector.trtllm.collect_mamba2. The vLLM model pin therefore does not select vLLM 0.31.0 for mamba2.

Other collector test modules cache a MagicMock under sys.modules["torch"]
at collection time. Under xdist, the w4a16_nvfp4 weight tests could then
build their tensors with that mock and fail in CI.

The tests now check the installed torch distribution instead of
sys.modules. A fixture installs the real torch module for each test. It
reuses an already initialized torch, because torch can be initialized only
once per process.

Major · Saved task YAML drops the new MoE and GEMM provenance and silently… · task_v2.py:1129-1131

python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/sdk/task_v2.py:1129-1131
Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Saved task YAML drops the new MoE and GEMM provenance and silently disables per-layer pricing.

Task.to_dict() emits the resolved gemm_quant_mode and moe_quant_mode for every role. to_yaml() blanks only the inferred FMHA values.

After from_yaml(), __post_init__ sees non-None fields. _resolve_quant_modes therefore sets _gemm_quant_mode_explicit_by_role and _moe_quant_mode_explicit_by_role to True.

NemotronHModel.create then skips _projection_modes and _moe_modes. A reloaded Nemotron mixed-precision task is priced with one global mode per projection and per routed-expert layer. This differs from the original task, so a saved config no longer round-trips.

Blank inferred GEMM and MoE modes in to_yaml(), as is already done for FMHA. Reloading re-resolves them from the checkpoint. Add a round-trip test: Task → to_yaml → from_yaml → build_model_config with a mixed-precision Nemotron checkpoint. Assert that _gemm_quant_mode_is_explicit and _moe_quant_mode_is_explicit are False.

# in Task.to_yaml(), after the FMHA loop
for attr, explicit_by_role in (
    ("gemm_quant_mode", self._gemm_quant_mode_explicit_by_role),
    ("moe_quant_mode", self._moe_quant_mode_explicit_by_role),
):
    for role, explicit in explicit_by_role.items():
        if not explicit:
            values[attr if role == "agg" else f"{role}_{attr}"] = None

1129 - 1131:
Update Task.to_yaml to preserve provenance by blanking inferred gemm_quant_mode
and moe_quant_mode values per role, using _gemm_quant_mode_explicit_by_role and
_moe_quant_mode_explicit_by_role to retain explicitly set values. Add a
round-trip test through Task.to_yaml, Task.from_yaml, and build_model_config for
a mixed-precision Nemotron checkpoint, verifying the resolved modes remain
non-explicit.

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • CUDA Dynamo images currently use vLLM 0.32.0, while the PR pins Nemotron runtimes to 0.31.0. Dynamo’s release metadata says Super and Ultra require dedicated images because their patches are not in the standard release container. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::container/context.yaml:95-105] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::docs/fern/components/releases.data.ts:1093-1116]
  • Ultra additionally requires disabled-kernel and FlashInfer-autotune flags, so the new collector’s native ModelOpt path should preserve this dedicated-runtime requirement. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::docs/fern/components/releases.data.ts:1093-1105]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The frozen policy rejects vLLM NVFP4 for the 4096-wide Super shape because top-k 22 exceeds FlashInfer’s top-k 10 limit. The new native ModelOpt cases should remain limited to the intended alternate geometry rather than enabling the legacy FlashInfer path. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::collector/cases/models/NemotronHForCausalLM_cases.yaml:107-132]
  • The frozen Nemotron-H model prices latent experts through moe_latent_size, while shared experts and routing remain hidden-size operations; routed dispatch and expert operations use the global MoE mode. This is the baseline most affected by the PR’s per-layer precision buckets. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/models/nemotron_h.py:220-251] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/models/nemotron_h.py:268-335]

2012-2012: Data Integrity & Integration

The comment's premise is contradicted by the declaration. _moe_quant_mode_is_explicit is a declared dataclass field, not an ad-hoc instance attribute. dataclasses.replace() copies declared init fields, so the flag survives the copy path the comment names.

Because the premise fails, the claimed silent loss of the explicitness flag is not established. The sweep flow also sets the flag inside build_model_config, so each point's config receives it when it is built.

The application test inventory accepts module-level collection skips only
for listed modules. Without torch, the new test module skipped at
collection time and failed the contracts job.

The torch fixture now skips each test when the torch distribution is not
installed, with the reason that the other torch-dependent collector tests
use. The module is always collected.

… 3.5 Lightning

Bring in ai-dynamo#645 at c9465fb (and main up to its base add6fca, which adds the
vLLM 0.30.0 tables its rows extend). The collect_gemm w4a16_nvfp4 lane and
its b200_sxm/gb200 vLLM 0.30.0 and b200_sxm 0.31.0 rows serve the dense
W4A16_NVFP4 shared-expert GEMMs that ai-dynamo#617 prices per layer. Merged without
conflicts.

Add a vLLM w4a16_nvfp4 MoE mode for Lightning's ModelOpt W4A16_NVFP4
routed experts. The collector builds the checkpoint's own
ModelOptMixedPrecisionConfig with the real expert prefix, so vLLM's
dispatch selects ModelOptNvFp4FusedMoE with use_a16, which only the Marlin
experts accept at v0.30.0 and v0.31.0. kernel_source records what runs.

The mode is enabled from SM80 (Marlin FP4) and allowed only for Lightning.
It adds 39 case groups per SM, including the gate key TP1/EP8
power_law_1.01. Lightning stays out of the vLLM W4A4 nvfp4 mode, and
Qwen3.6 W4A16 stays deferred.

…oss Task YAML

compile_engine and the KV-cache capacity builder now record the target
system on ModelConfig, and resolve_nvfp4_for_system does the same for the
legacy and AFD builders. Per-layer NVFP4 projections on Hopper then use the
weight-only lane through RustForwardPassPerfModel.best_available, instead
of the native FP4 lane that raised MissingSystemFlopsError.

Task.to_yaml writes inferred GEMM and MoE modes as null, as it already did
for FMHA, so reloading a saved Task keeps the checkpoint's per-layer
projection and routed-expert split. Explicit overrides are still written.

Correct the limitations page for the measured vLLM w4a16_nvfp4 GEMM rows
and the new MoE collector mode.

0.30.0 is the vLLM query slot's current version, so its MoE tables are now
consumed. Admit it in collect_moe's __compat__, as collect_gemm does, and
record the 0.30.0 source citations for the w4a16_nvfp4 lane.

…ckets

The canonical API sets ModelConfig.system but leaves the inferred global MoE
mode native nvfp4. _moe_modes resolved NVFP4 expert layers to nvfp4_wo on
Hopper, then mapped them back to the native default, so a canonical op-level
query on H200 raised MissingSystemFlopsError. Resolve every NVFP4 layer
(listed, remapped or unlisted) to the system's lane, and skip the split only
when all layers equal the global mode. Explicit modes still bypass the split.

Uniform and FP8/NVFP4 mixed expert listings now build on h200_sxm through
RustForwardPassPerfModel.best_available, agree with the Task-built buckets,
and gb200 is unchanged.

collect_moe now admits 0.30.0 like collect_gemm, so the audited-release
test expects 0.30.0 accepted for both modules.

Move the Nemotron-H per-layer checkpoint precision code into a shared
sdk/models/checkpoint_precision.py: metadata parsing and cache, per-layer
projection and routed-expert resolution, and bucketed GEMM/MoE helpers.
A family declares its layer kinds, the checkpoint modules each op prices
and its checkpoint paths. Nemotron-H behavior is unchanged.

Qwen3.5 (and Qwen3.6, Qwen3.8) and Gemma 4 now use it instead of their
per-category modes. Each GDN, attention, dense-MLP and shared-expert
projection and each routed-expert layer is priced at its checkpoint
precision, one op per precision bucket, and explicit GEMM/MoE modes still
override the checkpoint.

Packaged checkpoints change in two places, both to match how vLLM loads
them:
- Gemma-4-26B-A4B-NVFP4 routed experts move from BF16 to NVFP4. The old
".mlp" substring match treated the excluded shared MLP as covering the
experts, but the checkpoint's experts carry NVFP4 scales.
- Qwen3.6 GDN in_proj_ba moves from FP8 to BF16: its targets-only listing
does not list in_proj_b or in_proj_a.
Qwen3.5 NVFP4, Qwen3.8, Gemma-4-31B and unquantized configs are unchanged.

…resolve listed descendants

Qwen3.5 decode overlaps routed and shared experts per layer, but the per-layer
buckets pooled every routed precision into one overlap group and every shared
precision into the other, and routed-expert buckets were pooled across GDN and
full-attention layers. Keep each layer's joint (routed, shared gate_up, shared
down) precision per layer kind and build one overlap group per signature with
its own layer count. Routed-expert buckets are now per layer kind for Qwen and
Gemma 4.

The shared resolver now also resolves a module from a listed descendant (for
example <module>.weight or <experts>.0.up_proj), as ModelOpt's
ModelOptMixedPrecisionConfig prefix lookup does in vLLM v0.31.0, through an
ancestor index built once per checkpoint. An exact listing still wins, and
disagreeing descendants are a conflict.

Packaged checkpoints are op-for-op unchanged (78 of 78 combinations).

The Qwen3.6 NVFP4 checkpoint keeps routed experts weight-only (W4A16_NVFP4)
under ModelOpt MIXED_PRECISION. Admit it in the vLLM w4a16_nvfp4 MoE lane and
resolve its expert prefix (mlp.experts) through the checkpoint's own
ModelOptMixedPrecisionConfig.

…config groups

Fused checkpoint modules are now compared after the exclusion and unlisted
rules resolve each one, so an excluded Q with unlisted K/V in a targets-only
export loads as BF16 instead of failing. A compressed-tensors FP8 config group
with strategy=block or block_structure resolves to fp8_block GEMM and MoE
modes instead of per-tensor FP8.

The finalization merge compared Arrow type strings, so a shipped table
stored as large_string and new rows stored as string looked like a schema
mismatch. The merge then replaced the shipped table and its provenance
history with the new rows only. pandas 3 round-trips text as large_string,
so earlier merges left shipped tables in either storage type.

Treat string and large_string as one identity type, and cast the merged
table back to the existing table's schema so a merge never changes the
stored types.
