The block-FP8 collector repeatedly benchmarks one weight allocation, which can overstate cache reuse compared with the tested model graph. Use min(6, ceil(2 * L2_bytes / (N * K))) allocations instead. The two-L2 target is a heuristic. The six-copy cap comes from the existing vLLM BF16/per-tensor FP8 paths and SGLang collector convention; tiny matrices may not reach the target. Large weights use one copy.
Historically, block-FP8 used six copies in AIConfigurator #171. Commit 4bed48d introduced single-copy block-FP8/NVFP4 and eager block-FP8 timing during RTX PRO 6000/vLLM 0.19.0 bring-up; its precise rationale is undocumented. AISimulate #219 later restored graph timing.
Review status: requesting maintainer feedback on the measurement approach. This is not presented as ready to merge or as a demonstrated improvement in production-row accuracy.
Start with: python/aisimulate/collector/vllm/collect_gemm.py, its timing tests, then the evidence capsule.
Public or serialized contract changed: no; schema, dispatch, normalization and other precision policies are unchanged.
Compatibility or rollback concern: only H100 NVL/vLLM 0.24.0 is runtime-validated. Blackwell and other versions remain unverified. Reverting restores single-copy collection; existing profiles are unchanged.
Evidence
Tests: 22 focused unit tests pass on 64489fe6, excluding the application conftest because the collector environment lacks the installed application package. Ruff lint/format pass. Exact commands and results are in the capsule's Local checks section.
Fast CI: passed on previous head 64489fe6; results for this evidence update are pending. Local checks are not hosted CI.
Full CI: pending maintainer admission and required reviews.
CodeRabbit reviewed commit: 64489fe6; its reproducibility comment motivates this evidence update, which needs another review.
Codex reviewed commit: separate current-commit review pending.
Negative or boundary cases: L2 rounding, a matrix 10% above L2, six-copy cap, large single-copy weights, distinct storage, normalized publication, rejected eager timing, capture failures and unchanged precision policies.
Expected-value derivation: one byte per FP8 element; ceiling of twice L2 divided by N*K, clamped to 1–6; publish loop latency divided by the actual copy count.
Before/after output: the fresh paired campaign runs exact base/PR collector packages with normal settings (three warmups, six timed runs, one repetition per graph). Twelve shapes, seven samples per start and three starts per arm produce 504 actual published latencies. All six workers exit zero. Kernel labels, graph replay, distinct storage and normalization checks pass. No missing, duplicate, invalid or >15%-from-within-start-median samples are found; nothing is excluded.

Most published latencies decrease. Allocation count also changes graph length, so these results mix cache and graph/event/submission effects. They do not establish improved accuracy of production collector rows.
The capsule includes all raw timings, environment/source pins, 207 earlier raw traces, collection snapshots, checksums and machine-readable reports. Reanalysis needs no GPU:
Reader validation rejects injected missing, duplicate, negative and wrong-kernel data; injected outliers are flagged and retained. The README gives the exact GPU command and complete shape list.
Modeling or data provenance
Fresh data: H100 NVL (60 MiB L2), vLLM 0.24.0, PyTorch 2.11.0+cu130; base cd6efc5e versus PR 64489fe6. Values are measured milliseconds per published operation, converted to microseconds above. Aggregation is median within each start, then median across three starts.
Separately, reanalysis of the earlier fixed-72-operation graph sweep against Qwen3-4B-FP8 (revision 96b30dc13593a244a5e59e84687309f53c375cfa, TP=1) verifies exact kernel names/grids/blocks. At the PR's counts, GEMM kernel-duration MAPE falls 9.07% to 1.52%; quantization-plus-GEMM MAPE falls 8.02% to 2.28%, improving all eight shapes. This supports the controlled kernel/cache result, not accuracy of the shorter production graphs.
No L2 hardware counters or overall prediction improvement are claimed. The earlier uncapped-policy full-forward result remains negative (decode MAPE 5.82% to 10.69%); its comparison points and arithmetic are preserved. No packaged profiles or coefficients change.
For fp8_block, the collector now allocates max(1, min(6, ceil(2 * L2_bytes / (n * k)))) GEMM instances. The byte calculation assumes one byte per FP8 weight.
Other GEMM types retain their allocation counts: six for BF16 and per-tensor FP8, and one for NVFP4.
The collector still requires CUDA-graph replay and divides measured latency by the allocation count before publication. No exported or public declarations changed.
Evidence
The supplied tests cover allocation thresholds, the six-copy cap, a large-weight single-copy case, preserved counts for other precisions, and timing/publication behavior.
The PR description reports 22 focused unit tests passing, Ruff checks and git diff --check passing, and an H100 NVL vLLM 0.24.0 analysis where sampled GEMM-duration MAPE decreased from 9.07% to 1.52% across eight shapes. These are author-reported results, not attached or CI-hosted artifacts.
The two-L2 target is a heuristic. Blackwell, other supported versions, and improved total-forward prediction accuracy are not established.
Fast CI, full CI, and separate reviews were pending in the description. Review severity counts are unavailable because no current review findings were supplied.
Technical quality and merge readiness
The tests exercise the changed rotation and publication logic. The supplied evidence does not establish broader hardware coverage or full-suite status. Merge readiness remains unconfirmed pending the stated CI and review results.
For fp8_block, the collector now selects a GEMM instance count based on weight size and twice the device L2 cache size, with a limit of 1–6. Tests cover rotation counts, weight reuse, and timing publication across precisions.

Summary
Rotation count and timing validation python/aisimulate/collector/vllm/collect_gemm.py, python/aisimulate/tests/unit/collector/test_vllm_gemm_graph_timing.py
The collector calculates the fp8_block instance count from weight size and twice the device L2 cache size, clamped to 1–6. The tests execute the rotation loop and timing block, and check weight-copy counts, distinct weights, forward calls, and latency normalization. They also verify existing rotation counts for other precisions.
Verify the changed FP8 measurements on representative shapes before relying on newly collected performance data.

Explanation
The title "fix: size vLLM block FP8 weight rotation to L2" matches the main change: the vLLM block-FP8 GEMM collector now sizes its number of independent weight allocations (rotation) from the L2 cache size, capped at six. The title states the behavioral change and does not use a vague term. It uses a conventional fix: prefix, which the title requirements do not forbid.
Full details: Cross-Layer Contract
Explanation
PASS. The PR changes only the internal outside_loop_count calculation in python/aisimulate/collector/vllm/collect_gemm.py:351-360; the run_gemm signature and log_perf row keys remain identical at base and head (gemm_dtype, m, n, k, latency). The existing CSV contract remains unchanged in collector/helper.py:724-733,821-833 and collector/README.md:436-440; the Rust/reference consumer still reads the same GEMM fields, including latency (aiconfigurator commit f254959eb89e2f206b8f9a77051644d7c1cbdb89, aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/perf_database/gemm.rs:709-729). No CLI, serialization, or public declaration changed. The added unit tests execute the rotation and publication paths and cover threshold rounding, the six-copy cap, large weights, latency normalization, and unchanged non-block-FP8 counts (test_vllm_gemm_graph_timing.py:87-149). The PR description explicitly limits runtime compatibility evidence to tested hardware and identifies unverified platforms, rather than asserting unsupported compatibility.
Full details: Compatibility Boundaries
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only vLLM collector rotation logic and its unit tests. The log_perf row fields and publication arguments remain unchanged (collect_gemm.py:417-434), so no schema or public API changes were introduced. No Rust, binding, version, or packaging files changed; python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml, Cargo.toml, and Cargo.lock are unchanged. The changed Python files add no Dynamo import, so AISimulate remains standalone. The one-wheel/one-crate artifact contract remains untouched.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the required template and covers the change, review map, compatibility risks, tests, CI status, boundary cases, numerical derivation, evidence, provenance, and tracking. It clearly identifies pending CI and review items, so no required section is materially missing.
Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence
Explanation
The PR changes the collector’s published latency behavior: outside_loop_count now depends on weight bytes and twice the GPU L2 size, and latency is divided by that count (collect_gemm.py:351-360, 417-425). The added tests provide deterministic allocation-count and normalization checks with stubbed timing (test_vllm_gemm_graph_timing.py:23-84, 104-149), but they do not provide before/after performance data. The description reports an H100 MAPE change from 9.07% to 1.52% across eight shapes, yet supplies no raw per-shape results, machine-readable summary, golden diff, held-out comparison, or anomaly checks. Only the collector and unit-test files changed; no benchmark evidence artifact changed. Historical rationale provides provenance, but the reported performance refresh is not reproducible under this check.
Resolution
Add a reproducible before/after benchmark artifact or an independent oracle. Include pinned framework/device details, the complete shape list, raw old and new timings, the MAPE calculation, and anomaly checks for missing, invalid, or outlier samples. Attach the command or CI job that regenerates the machine-readable results, or add an explained golden/held-out comparison.
Full details: Review Evidence
Explanation
The visible description names exact local test, Ruff, format, and diff-check commands with results. It also lists L2 boundary cases, reports H100 NVL/vLLM runtime validation, and marks Fast CI and Full CI as pending rather than passed. However, the PR description is explicitly truncated during the Evidence section. The missing text could contain the remaining boundary evidence, runner/parity classifications, or a claim about nested workflows as hosted CI. The complete description is not available in the repository refs.
Resolution
Provide the complete PR description, including the remainder of the Evidence section. Recheck that it labels local, fake-runner, parity, and production evidence separately and does not present inactive nested workflows as hosted CI results.

The frozen vLLM collector uses one allocation for fp8_block and NVFP4, six for other GEMM types. The PR’s adaptive FP8-block count intentionally diverges from this reference while preserving NVFP4 behavior. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::collector/vllm/collect_gemm.py:212-215]
The collector normalizes measured latency by the number of replicated operations, so the new count must retain this invariant. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::collector/vllm/collect_gemm.py:237-248] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::collector/vllm/collect_gemm.py:251-259]
FP8-block weights include both the FP8 weight tensor and block scale tensor during setup. The PR’s “weight byte size” calculation should account for the intended footprint consistently with this representation. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::collector/vllm/collect_gemm.py:173-181]
The quantization mode and public configuration names are unchanged: fp8_block remains a GEMM/MoE mode with the existing mapping and CLI fields. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::aic-core/src/aiconfigurator_core/sdk/common.py:1243-1260] [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::docs/cli_user_guide.md:1090-1108]
ai-dynamo/dynamo
Dynamo’s observed downstream contract is the unchanged canonical fp8_block quantization name; no allocation-count API or vLLM collector consumer appeared in the repository search. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::lib/bindings/python/tests/test_ais_capacity.py:64-81]
Provide reproducible before/after timing evidence.
The adaptive outside_loop_count can change the latency published by log_perf. The focused unit tests validate only synthetic timing and normalization. Provide one-copy and adaptive-copy results for the same representative shapes, with the exact GPU, framework version, and collection settings.

Target a weight pool twice the GPU L2 capacity, capped at the six-copy convention used by the other GEMM collectors. Large weights need only one copy, avoiding the extra VRAM pressure from unconditional rotation. Keep graph timing and per-operation latency normalization.
Validate L2 boundaries, the six-copy cap, distinct allocation reuse and latency normalization with 22 focused unit tests. Verify real CUDA-graph collection on H100 NVL with vLLM 0.24.0, including a large-matrix case that fails with six copies under a 26 GiB allocator quota and passes with one.
Include reproducible before/after evidence: 504 published collector timings, pinned environments, raw historical traces and CPU-only reanalysis. Explicitly report that normal collector latencies mostly decrease and that varying graph length prevents claiming improved production-row accuracy. Request maintainer feedback before merge.
