fix: reject KVCR staging from draining sources - #600
A queued request can retain a KVCR hint after its source worker starts draining. Rechecking only at dispatch lets later prefix lookup start a new pull, which can delay the worker's removal during scale-in.
Track draining workers in the KVCR registry and reject them when staging a new pull. Keep the landing lookup unchanged so already staged pulls finish and release their source pins. The regression queues a hint before the drain mark and verifies zero new pulls and the same removal deadline as the no-hint control.
Also clarify the reviewed model boundaries: peer unpins refresh source recency in hash-key order; target ingress is unbounded and independent of H2D/D2H; ordinary prefix-extending follow-ups count as partial pulls; parked pulls start per drive scan. Notes/TODOs record those boundaries without changing their behavior.
Review map
Risk level: medium; queued-hint behavior during dynamic scale-in changes. Fixed-worker replay behavior is unchanged.
Start with crates/core/src/engine/kvcr.rs, crates/core/src/engine/scheduler/vllm/kvcr.rs, and crates/core/src/replay/components/engine.rs. The end-to-end regression is in crates/core/tests/kvcr_replay.rs; docs/replay/engine/kv-cache.md states the modeled boundaries.
Public or serialized contract changed: no new fields or APIs. Counter definitions are clarified without changing their values.
Compatibility: a request that would newly pull from a draining source now uses its local cache or recomputes. Already staged pulls retain their existing lifecycle.
The independent performance PR, perf: skip KVCR deadline queries for ranks without pulls #611, owns the deadline shortcut, bookkeeping TODO and benchmark evidence. This PR contains no performance optimization; both target main and can merge in either order.
Evidence
The queued-hint regression fails on base c3fe2395: the hinted source is still draining at 151 ms while the no-hint control has been removed. It passes with the staging guard. Instantaneous local G2 copies isolate the expected 151 ms source-pass boundary.
Current extraction: cargo test -p aisimulate-core --test kvcr_replay — 13 passed, zero failed, including queued hints and in-flight drain/landing coverage.
The full cargo test -p aisimulate-core suite previously passed 2,480 tests, zero failures, one ignored at 52e131bc. The extracted correctness branch differs from that revision only by deleting the bookkeeping TODO and performance documentation; production behavior and tests are identical.
Previously validated CanonicalV1 fixed/base comparisons: KVCR off at W=8/32/128/512/2048, plus idle and hinted KVCR at W512; all seven canonical digests and KVCR counters match. The correctness code and tests are unchanged from 52e131bc; only performance hunks have been removed.
Temporary knee validation: 24 scenarios, repeated twice; 97 pulls and 419 preemptions per sweep, with zero lifecycle, pin-balance, ordering, processor-sharing-oracle, counter or determinism violations. The temporary fixture requires nonzero pulls in every scenario. Validation harnesses are excluded from this PR.
cargo fmt --all -- --check and cargo clippy -p aisimulate-core --all-targets passed; Clippy reports warnings on unchanged code.
Fast CI / Full CI: not claimed. CodeRabbit reviewed initial commit 52e131bc; its presentation-only benchmark comment was withdrawn and resolved. Codex locally reviewed b5ecd52b1e4a79ecb6006b001dff8d23e67acb2c; no independent review of the extraction is claimed.
Modeling or data provenance
Synthetic fixed-timing fixtures. Native KVCR parity is not claimed. The only simulated behavior change is rejecting newly staged pulls from draining sources; recency, bandwidth contention, counter values and same-timestamp ordering remain unchanged.
Tracking
Follow-up to #454. Performance changes and their evidence: #611. Further model changes remain deferred.

The live KVCR guard requires the sidecar to remain ready while the source vLLM engine is down, then verifies the target can receive the remote transfer and RDMA counters account for the payload. This supports preserving already-staged pulls during draining. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::tests/deploy/test_kvcr_guard.py:458-516] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::tests/deploy/test_kvcr_guard.py:530-562] [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::tests/deploy/test_kvcr_guard.py:596-631]
Router fetch hints identify a selected source and are explicitly best-effort; the source may no longer hold the blocks when the request runs. The new draining-source rejection is therefore consistent with downstream fallback behavior rather than changing the hint contract. 📝 Summary
Risk level: Medium
Three areas for human attention
Drain timing:mark_for_removal marks the worker as draining. VllmKvcrAdapter::stage checks source_for_staging before reserving or pinning source blocks. Confirm all paths that stage queued or retried hints use this check.
In-flight pulls: Draining prevents new staging but does not cancel pulls already staged. Those pulls still use source to access the registered source when releasing pins. Confirm removal continues to wait for this work to finish.
Regression scope: The replay test covers a queued hint whose source begins draining before staging. It checks that the queued request completes without host-token reuse and that its removal timing matches the no-hint baseline. It does not establish coverage of every drain and staging interleaving.
Changed behavior and contracts
KvcrRegistry tracks draining worker IDs. source_for_staging returns no source for a draining worker; source remains available for existing pulls. unregister_worker clears the draining state after checking that no pulls touch the worker.
The new registry methods are pub(crate). The adapter’s staging method uses source_for_staging. This change does not include the deadline-query optimization described in the previous summary.
The inspected code confirms that mark_for_removal marks the worker as draining and that staging checks the draining state before accessing the source tier. The registry retains the separate source lookup for existing pulls.
The regression test is present and checks the queued-hint case against a no-hint baseline. The author reports 13 KVCR replay tests passing, cargo test -p aisimulate-core with 2,481 passed, zero failures, and one ignored, and CanonicalV1 comparisons. These results were not independently run. Fast CI and Full CI are not claimed.

Technical quality and merge readiness
The inspected implementation and regression test support the intended drain guard. Merge readiness is not established without CI status and current review findings. The bot-generated review is not approval.
KVCR now tracks draining workers and prevents new staged pulls from using them as sources. Parked-pull timing and pull-count documentation are updated. A replay test checks that a queued hint does not start a pull from a source after it begins draining.
The engine marks workers as draining. KVCR rejects draining workers as sources for new staging. The replay test checks that a queued hint does not start a pull from a draining source.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract
Explanation
No stale cross-layer contract is introduced. The final reviewed diff adds only pub(crate) draining methods and changes internal staging behavior; KvcrPullCounts, KvcrStats, configuration fields, defaults, and serialized field names remain unchanged. The path is traced from EngineComponent::mark_for_removal to KvcrRegistry::mark_draining, through VllmKvcrAdapter::stage and the unchanged landing lookup in advance (crates/core/src/replay/components/engine.rs:460-465, crates/core/src/engine/kvcr.rs:180-235, crates/core/src/engine/scheduler/vllm/kvcr.rs:89-190). Rust replay tests cover both queued hints and already-staged pulls, including removal timing, zero new pulls, report counters, and host reuse (crates/core/tests/kvcr_replay.rs:357-491). Rust report serialization is unchanged, while Python compilation and CLI tests continue to consume the same KVCR configuration and report shape (python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/compiler.py:878-893, tests/test_host_offload_cli.py:528-620). Documentation and the Replay API/native-composition guidance describe the draining-source behavior (docs/replay/engine/kv-cache.md:336-371, docs/replay/api/rust.md:72-82, docs/adapters/native-composition.md:56-74). The deadline optimization from an intermediate commit was removed by the final commit and is not part of the reviewed diff.
Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence
Explanation
The changed selection logic has reproducible source evidence. The base staging path calls registry.source, while the PR changes it to source_for_staging and marks workers draining before removal (crates/core/src/engine/scheduler/vllm/kvcr.rs:89-92, crates/core/src/replay/components/engine.rs:460-464). The added replay test uses explicit timings, a no-hint control, exact drain snapshots, and assertions for zero new pulls, five completed requests, and zero host-token reuse (crates/core/tests/kvcr_replay.rs:435-490). The PR description also reports CanonicalV1 before/after byte comparisons with retained samples and anomaly checks. No unexplained binary-only validation is used.
Full details: Compatibility Boundaries
Explanation
No compatibility boundary changed. The PR changes only internal Rust KVCR logic, tests, and KV-cache documentation. Added methods are pub(crate), and the serialized KvcrStats shape remains unchanged. No Python, schema, binding, version, dependency, or packaging files changed. Rust and Python KVCR defaults remain 1.0 ms latency and 50.0 GB/s bandwidth (crates/core/src/engine/config.rs:369-399; python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate/config/engine.py:215-220). The crate remains rlib/cdylib, and maturin still packages the single aisimulate wheel with aisimulate_core (crates/core/Cargo.toml:15-17; python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml:104-123). The changed files add no Dynamo or AIConfigurator dependency. Dynamo continues to pin aisimulate-core separately (ai-dynamo/dynamo@1790a42418bc5e97a9b544c31d4e469199337a96:Cargo.toml:55-56).
Full details: Review Evidence
Explanation
The supplied PR description is truncated in the Evidence section. The available text shows boundary validation and reported CanonicalV1 results, and the objectives report cargo test -p aisimulate-core with 2,481 passed tests. However, the omitted text may contain the exact command list, provenance labels for local/fake-runner/parity/production evidence, or hosted-CI claims. Repository inspection found no stored PR-body artifact or additional review ref; only the code refs are available. This prevents a complete check.
Resolution
Provide the complete PR description, especially the remainder of the Evidence section. It must state exact commands and results, classify local, fake-runner, parity, and production evidence, and identify hosted CI accurately. Do not describe an inactive nested workflow as hosted CI.

Adjacent KVCR routing contract, not a direct consumer of the new methods: Dynamo’s router can attach kv.fetch hints naming KVCR cache owners. With topology filtering, the source must satisfy the target worker’s transfer-domain policy; with required enforcement, Dynamo sends no hint if no eligible same-island source exists. This is relevant when checking that replay staging still respects the router’s source-selection behavior. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/knowledge-base/modular-components/router/topology-aware-kv-transfer.md:153-168]
Dynamo describes cache-owner source metadata as advisory: endpoint health and ownership takeover are handled by the persistent cache implementation, not probed by Dynamo. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::lib/kv-router/src/protocols.rs:652-655]
Scale-down remains a broader limitation: Planner documentation warns that removing a worker terminates it without draining in-flight requests, and can fail decode workers waiting on a KV-cache transfer. The PR’s staging guard addresses only one part of that drain boundary, not safe-to-terminate reporting. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::docs/fern/pages/kubernetes/auto-deployment/dynamo-planner.mdx:116]
The broad search found no direct Dynamo references to the newly added mark_draining or source_for_staging methods.

Why and what changed
