Summary

materialize_engine_launch_config() rejects canonical MTP/EAGLE3 inputs with canonical nextn conflicts with scheduler aic_nextn: the replay role contains the resolved draft depth, while its canonical cost configuration correctly leaves legacy nextn at zero. This blocks Dynamo's use of the SD API merged in #382.

Resolve and validate launch depth through the shared speculative scheme registry, preserve explicit acceptance/capacity requirements, and expose the same depth check to downstream Rust adapters. Keep rejecting conflicting depths, unsupported backends, tree replay, and depths outside 1–5. Include Python coverage for both supported backends and all worker roles, plus Rust round-trip and invalid-control tests.

Dependency for ai-dynamo/dynamo#15627 (tracked by ai-dynamo/dynamo#16722). No estimator math or model-family support changes.

Validation

  • Reproduced the failure with published Python/Rust pair 0.13.0.dev202610170000000074 / 0.13.0-dev.202610170000000074.
  • cargo fmt --all and focused Ruff checks pass.
  • Rebuilt and installed the native wheel; 92 Python tests pass (canonical launch adapter, speculative registry, and cost identity resolution).
  • Three Rust launch regression tests pass with the embedded interpreter pointed at the test environment.
  • Dynamo integration with the patched wheel/crate pair: 108 focused Python tests pass, including 22 native speculative replay cases.
  • GitHub full CI is running on the latest commit.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Summary

Risk: Moderate. The three areas needing the most human attention are shared depth resolution, feature-dependent Rust behavior, and launch validation across backends and worker roles.

Changed behavior and public contract

  • EngineLaunchConfig now resolves depth from ForwardPassSpeculationConfig::replay_depth() when a speculation config exists. It uses config.nextn otherwise. The resolved depth must match scheduler aic_nextn.
  • Positive-depth generic speculation requires the vllm or sglang backend and explicit, nonblank acceptance rates. Non-ngram speculation also requires explicitly configured positive GPU blocks. The change no longer rejects ngram speculation categorically.
  • ForwardPassSpeculationConfig::replay_depth() is a new public Rust method. With the Python feature, it delegates depth resolution to the shared helper. Without the feature, it supports empty "none" and validated "ngram" configs; generic speculation returns an invalid-config error.
  • The follow-up test commit uses local model geometry and backend versions for the Python canonical-launch test.

Evidence and readiness

  • The supplied PR description reports 92 passing Python tests, three passing Rust launch regression tests, cargo fmt --all, and focused Ruff checks. The repository inspection did not independently run these checks. Full CI was reported as still running.
  • Human review should confirm that Python-enabled and non-Python builds enforce compatible replay-depth rules, and that explicit acceptance-rate and GPU-block requirements match all intended callers.
  • No current review findings were supplied, so review severity counts are unavailable. Bot review is not approval.
  • Technical quality is not established by the reported checks alone. Merge readiness remains unconfirmed pending full CI and human review.

Speculative replay depth now informs engine launch configuration and validation. The change adds replay-depth resolution, updates timing configuration to use it, and adds Rust and Python tests for launch behavior.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

PASS. The change keeps the canonical schema and artifact boundaries intact. EngineLaunchConfig still uses the existing fields and defaults; it only derives aic_nextn when that field is absent, while the no-speculation path still uses canonical nextn (crates/core/src/engine/launch.rs:66-81). The new public ForwardPassSpeculationConfig::replay_depth uses the Python registry when enabled and preserves the existing non-Python limits (crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/config.rs:69-90). Dynamo's reviewed consumer calls the same public method (ai-dynamo/dynamo@cb928c94178c19455ed18c9ac927e19d0055d40d:lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/ais_callback.rs:152-159) and accepts canonical speculation with nextn=0 while requiring explicit acceptance rates (ai-dynamo/dynamo@cb928c94178c19455ed18c9ac927e19d0055d:components/src/dynamo/replay/config.py:167-183). The PR changes no manifest, version, schema constant, or binding registration. The existing Maturin wheel and Cargo crate contract remains unchanged (python/aisimulate/pyproject.toml:104-123; crates/core/Cargo.toml:4-17). AISimulate source changes do not add a Dynamo dependency.

Full details: Review Evidence

Explanation

The description names validation commands and results, reports Python and Rust regression coverage, and identifies negative controls for missing acceptance rates and conflicting or unsupported depths. It separates local formatting/tests, native-wheel and embedded-interpreter checks, published-version parity, and hosted Full CI status. The diff also contains parameterized backend/role coverage and Rust invalid-control tests. No inactive nested workflow is cited as hosted CI evidence; Full CI actively invokes its reusable workflows in .github/workflows/ci.yml.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract

Explanation

The canonical depth contract is still stale in downstream runtime consumers. This PR infers aic_nextn from speculation.replay_depth() in crates/core/src/engine/launch.rs:73-79,191-221, and its Python coverage deliberately emits generic mtp/eagle3 timing config with nextn=0 and rank depth 3 (python/aisimulate/tests/unit/test_engine_launch_adapter.py:121-128). At downstream commit cb928c94178c19455ed18c9ac927e19d0055d40d, Dynamo's Python AisSession only derives _nextn from legacy nextn or ngram (lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/_internal/ais.py:134-140) and uses it for decode width (:181-188), so generic MTP/EAGLE3 uses width 1. Its test covers only legacy nextn and ngram (lib/bindings/python/tests/test_ais_capacity.py:153-166). The downstream Rust path has the same gap: canonical speculation validates acceptance rates but does not set ais_nextn (lib/mocker/src/common/protocols.rs:1249-1263), while lib/mocker/src/engine_adapter.rs:122-124 copies args.ais_nextn directly into EngineConfig.aic_nextn. The downstream callback derives depth, but that does not propagate depth to the scheduler rank. This is a changed-path compatibility failure, not a pre-existing unrelated issue.

Resolution

Update every downstream canonical-speculation consumer to resolve the shared replay depth. Set and validate ais_nextn/aic_nextn before engine construction, and make AisSession use the resolved depth for decode batching. Add Dynamo tests for generic MTP and EAGLE3 timing, callback decode width, and scheduler-rank propagation for both supported backends and all worker roles. Document the canonical nextn=0 plus inferred-depth contract for downstream adapters.

Full details: Modeling And Data Evidence

Explanation

The PR changes selection logic: EngineLaunchConfig::from_value now derives depth from speculation.replay_depth() (crates/core/src/engine/launch.rs:73-78), and validation uses that depth for backend, acceptance-rate, capacity, and scheduler checks (lines 191-222). The PR description provides issue provenance and a claimed reproduction, but the changed files provide only pass/fail unit assertions. The Python test checks launch fields (python/aisimulate/tests/unit/test_engine_launch_adapter.py:58-128), and its expected_accepted_tokens value is not evaluated. No explained golden before/after diff, independent oracle, held-out comparison, or machine-readable summary with anomaly checks is supplied.

Resolution

Add reproducible before/after evidence for canonical MTP/EAGLE3 launch selection. Include a checked-in machine-readable fixture or explained golden diff that records the pre-fix rejection and post-fix aic_nextn, acceptance rates, worker role, backend, and capacity provenance for the full matrix. Validate the fixture against an independent registry-derived depth and add anomaly checks for invalid or out-of-range values. Assert or remove unused fields such as expected_accepted_tokens.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem, intended behavior, scope, and validation results, but it does not follow the repository template. It omits the required Review map, Modeling or data provenance, and Tracking sections, and it does not provide the required structured evidence fields such as reviewed commits, CI status details, and boundary-case results.

Resolution

Restructure the description using all template sections: Why and what changed, Review map, Evidence, Modeling or data provenance, and Tracking. Add risk level, starting files, public-contract impact, compatibility concerns, exact test commands and results, reviewed commit identifiers, negative or boundary-case coverage, and issue links or N/A entries where applicable.

ai-dynamo/dynamo

Inspected the detached branch for open PR #15627.

  • Replay canonical speculation is lowered to aic_nextn, aic_mtp_seed, and acceptance data in components/src/dynamo/replay/config.py:143-196; legacy speculative fields and conflicting timing configs are rejected. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • The native mocker bridge forwards ais_nextn, acceptance rates, and MTP seed into EngineConfig in lib/mocker/src/engine_adapter.rs:110-138. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Router replay materialization emits canonical speculation.kind and num_speculative_tokens in components/src/dynamo/router/simulation/provider.py:178-184. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • Capacity provenance remains significant: native_engine_args_payload() removes inferred GPU blocks for speculative runs unless capacity was explicitly authored (components/src/dynamo/replay/config.py:216-233). This aligns with the PR’s explicit-capacity validation and should remain preserved. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The Dynamo adapter resolves speculation depth from command flags, max_draft_len, or num_nextn_predict_layers, rejects differing worker depths, and requires explicit acceptance (src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/dynamo.py:934-995). [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • The canonical schema enforces positive depth with explicit acceptance, rejects acceptance with depth zero, and bounds acceptance by depth (src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/schema.py:25-43). [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • The CI adapter independently enforces matching prefill/decode depths and explicit depth/acceptance (src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/dynamo_ci.py:301-323). [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • Review point: backend mapping emits vLLM speculative_config.num_speculative_tokens and SGLang speculative-num-steps (generator/config/backend_config_mapping.yaml:187-190), while the Dynamo adapter’s nested-config lookup explicitly checks max_draft_len and num_nextn_predict_layers (config_adapter/dynamo.py:960-964). Verify that canonical vLLM payloads retain one of the recognized aliases or that num_speculative_tokens is also consumed. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

Avoid calling Python without an initialized interpreter.

replay_depth() delegates to Python::with_gil in python builds, but auto-initialize is enabled only by embed-python. EngineLaunchConfig::validate() calls it for configured speculation, so a Rust caller without an initialized interpreter can panic before the configuration error is returned. The local ngram_launch_infers_depth_and_round_trips test also reaches this path under python.

Resolve none and ngram in Rust before delegating to Python, or return an error when Python is not initialized.
