Why and what changed

The canonical forward-pass estimator accepted only Ngram speculation, although the SDK already supported multiple speculative schemes. Generalize ForwardPassSpeculationConfig to kind, params, and optional draft checkpoint identity so callers can use the existing best_available() and timing methods for supported OP/SOL configurations.

Validate scheme parameters before estimator fallback, retain resolved draft content in saved configuration/provenance, and preserve Ngram JSON and legacy nextn behavior. Generic configurations use existing SDK algorithms and cost formulas. FPM SD candidates remain unsupported; an explicitly allowed fallback may select OP while retaining the complete SD configuration. FPM-only selectors cannot be silently discarded. Replay/AgentX support remains unchanged. The pinned Dynamo benchmark adapter reads the shared serialized Ngram identity across the Rust enum-to-struct migration, retaining legacy nextn, accepting disabled speculation, and rejecting other replay schemes. Recognized draft-checkpoint download failures retain their availability classification; invalid configuration remains fatal before estimator selection.

Review map

  • Risk level: medium — public Rust type migration and cross-language configuration handling.
  • Start with crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/config.rs and the SDK's resolve_speculation_config; then review candidate selection and the explicit replay guard.
  • Public or serialized contract changed: Rust's Ngram-only enum becomes a struct. Existing Ngram JSON stays compatible; generic identities add optional draft_model_path/draft_config. The migration and existing packed-telemetry/static-query conventions are documented.
  • Compatibility or rollback concern: direct Rust enum construction/accessor calls must migrate. Explicit MTP on a DSPARK architecture is now rejected instead of silently using DSPARK; legacy nextn retains its existing behavior. Standalone draft models still require their source checkpoint configuration. Reverting this PR restores the Ngram-only canonical schema.

Evidence

Current head: 684a59c934b2661e4501a79f58dcd25f58c436f5, integrated with main a1e1b3bd1.

  • SDK speculative-cost and configuration-resolution suites: 88 passed, including 10 checkpoint error-classification cases.
  • CI workflow contracts in the CI Python 3.12 environment: 351 passed.
  • Complete patched Dynamo callback compiled against the real core and SDK: 7 passed, 0 skipped. This includes actual decode predictions for AR, legacy nextn and Ngram, valid disabled identities, malformed disabled settings, and unsupported schemes. CI runs the same contract against each revision's installed wheel before publishing artifacts.
  • Ruff, Rust formatting, whitespace, packaged legal-file consistency and strict CODEOWNERS coverage passed.
  • Hosted checks at the exact current head: 73 passed, with only the release-only staging job skipped. Fast CI, Full CI, Forward Prediction Performance, and Simulation Performance all passed. The simulation workflow built both revisions and passed all 7 full-callback tests against each matching installed SDK (base enum and HEAD struct), with no ignored tests.
  • CodeRabbit: SUCCESS at the current head, no actionable comments; all three prior threads resolved.
  • Codex: independent review of the exact current commit found no actionable issues, including the main integration and both Dynamo compatibility rewrites.
  • Original API validation at 11396b4ba35477153a246216a791ec0b41663f3a: 412 SDK tests, 500 replay/runner tests, 390 frozen parity cases, 2,126 default Rust tests, 2,203 embedded-Python Rust tests (1 ignored), and 16 public API tests passed. Estimator formulas and frozen goldens remain unchanged.

Modeling or data provenance

No estimator formulas or profile data changed. This PR adds configuration plumbing and capability checks; it makes no new serving-accuracy claim.

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/ais_callback.rs:141-144 still calls the removed ForwardPassSpeculationConfig::num_speculative_tokens() method, causing a downstream Rust compile/API break. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • components/src/dynamo/router/simulation/provider.py:178-184 reconstructs speculation using only top-level num_speculative_tokens, dropping generalized params, draft_model_path, and draft_config. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/ais_adapter.py:266-272 unconditionally indexes speculation["params"]["num_speculative_tokens"] when nextn > 0, so non-ngram configurations can fail during capability reconciliation. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]
  • lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/_internal/ais.py:135-140 derives verification width only for kind == "ngram"; other speculation kinds retain legacy nextn behavior. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The versioned adapter contract remains legacy-only: src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/schema.py:25-44 models speculation through nextn and requires nextn_accepted for enabled speculation. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/dynamo.py:935-1053 detects speculation from runtime flags and lowers it to a single nextn depth; it has no generalized speculation identity path. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]
  • vLLM generation remains limited to speculative_config.method and speculative_config.num_speculative_tokens in src/aiconfigurator/generator/config/backend_templates/vllm/cli_args.j2:19-31 and backend_config_mapping.yaml:188-194. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

No path/config consistency check is required for non-draft_model schemes.

draft_config is an accepted injected snapshot for learned schemes. Their constructors price from draft_config; only draft_model uses draft_model_path to build a model and therefore requires matching content. Re-resolving a saved non-draft_model snapshot does not reload the path.

📝 Summary

Risk level: Elevated. Human review should focus on:

  1. Speculation identity and checkpoint resolution. The public Rust config changes from the Ngram enum variant to a struct with kind, params, and optional draft-checkpoint identity. SDK resolution validates the configuration and resolves draft content before estimator selection.
  2. Estimator selection and fallback. Speculative FPM estimation remains unsupported. An allowed fallback may select a supported OP candidate while retaining the complete speculation config. FPM-only selectors cannot discard that config.
  3. Compatibility and public contracts. Rust callers must migrate from the enum variant and num_speculative_tokens() accessor. N-gram JSON and legacy nextn behavior are intended to remain compatible. Explicit MTP on DSPARK is rejected; legacy nextn retains its behavior. The pinned Dynamo adapter accepts disabled speculation, N-gram identity, and legacy nextn, and rejects other replay schemes.

The change uses existing SDK algorithms and cost formulas. It retains resolved draft content in saved configuration and provenance. It does not add speculative FPM estimators, AgentX replay integration, or serving-accuracy claims.

Technical evidence supplied: The author reports 88 passing SDK speculative-cost and configuration-resolution tests, including 10 checkpoint error-classification cases; 339 passing CI workflow contract tests; and 7 passing callback contract tests with no skips. Ruff, Rust formatting, whitespace, packaged legal-file consistency, and strict CODEOWNERS coverage reportedly passed. These are author-reported results, not independently verified here.

Merge readiness: Hosted Fast CI, Full CI, Forward Prediction Performance, and Simulation Performance were still running for the reviewed head. The previous head passed those workflows, but that does not establish current-head status. Current review findings and severity counts were not supplied, so review counts are unavailable. The supplied evidence does not establish merge readiness.

The Rust speculation configuration now supports scheme kinds, parameters, and optional draft-model fields. Python resolves and snapshots configuration identity. Estimator selection applies scheme-specific compatibility checks. The performance build adapts Dynamo’s speculation-depth conversion and verifies callback compatibility.

Full details: Cross-Layer Contract

Explanation

The prior cross-layer contract failure remains unresolved. The PR documents MTP as {"kind":"mtp","params":{"depth":2}} in docs/perf-model/configuration.md:105-106, but the downstream Dynamo planner at commit 6343ae302b560fe3c9d6dc26c1966d58572b6427 still unconditionally reads speculation["params"]["num_speculative_tokens"] for positive speculative_nextn in components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/ais_adapter.py:265-278. That path raises KeyError for the documented MTP identity. The PR changes no planner adapter or planner test; its new Dynamo patch targets the callback replay file and explicitly rejects MTP (scripts/performance/build_simulation_dynamo.py:23-49, scripts/performance/dynamo_callback_contract.rs:99-105). The downstream integration test covers only Ngram (ai-dynamo/dynamo, commit 6343ae302b560fe3c9d6dc26c1966d58572b6427, components/src/dynamo/planner/tests/integration/test_ais_native_estimator.py:169-193).

Resolution

Update Dynamo's AIS planner adapter to dispatch on speculation.kind. Compare ngram.params.num_speculative_tokens and mtp.params.depth with the runtime capability. Reject or define a scheme-specific width check for other schemes instead of indexing num_speculative_tokens unconditionally. Add downstream integration tests for documented MTP and draft-model configurations with positive speculative_nextn, verifying identity preservation or a clear validation error.

Full details: Compatibility Boundaries

Explanation

The pull request introduces a generic Rust and Python speculation schema, including MTP and draft-model identities (crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/config.rs:59-66, python/aisimulate/src/aisimulate_core/sdk/speculation/base.py:96-121, and docs/perf-model/configuration.md:99-109). The Dynamo consumers remain ngram-only. At linked Dynamo commit 6343ae302b560fe3c9d6dc26c1966d58572b6427, the Planner reads speculation["params"]["num_speculative_tokens"] at components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/ais_adapter.py:267-271, and the Python binding derives speculative width only for kind == "ngram" at lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/_internal/ais.py:133-145. The pull request only adds a simulation-build patch that explicitly rejects schemes other than none and ngram (scripts/performance/build_simulation_dynamo.py:30-53); it does not update those Planner or binding paths. Therefore generic AISimulate identities can fail or produce an incorrect speculative width at a Dynamo boundary. The one-wheel/one-crate callback harness does not resolve this mismatch.

Resolution

Before release, update the Dynamo Planner and Python binding to extract speculative width in a scheme-aware way and add capability checks for supported schemes, with integration tests for MTP and at least one draft scheme. Alternatively, make generic schemes AISimulate-only: reject them before any Dynamo Planner or binding consumes the configuration, remove shared Planner-facing schema claims, and add tests for the consistent rejection. Preserve the one-wheel/one-crate contract in either design.

🔀 Multi-repo context ai-dynamo/dynamo, ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

Linked repositories findings

ai-dynamo/dynamo

  • lib/bindings/python/rust/llm/ais_callback.rs:141-145 calls the removed ForwardPassSpeculationConfig::num_speculative_tokens() method. Dynamo pins aisimulate-core = "=0.13.0-dev.2" in Cargo.toml:61-62; updating to this PR requires a coordinated Rust consumer migration. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

  • components/src/dynamo/router/simulation/provider.py:178-184 only forwards kind and a top-level num_speculative_tokens, dropping arbitrary params, draft_model_path, and draft_config. It also indexes speculation["num_speculative_tokens"], so generalized configurations without that legacy field are incompatible with this adapter. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

  • components/src/dynamo/planner/core/perf_model/ais_adapter.py:266-272 assumes every speculation configuration has params.num_speculative_tokens; generic scheme-specific parameter sets need an adapter update or will fail during capability reconciliation. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

  • lib/bindings/python/src/dynamo/_internal/ais.py:134-140 derives _nextn from speculation only when kind == "ngram". Its decode path uses _nextn + 1 for batch sizing (:180-190), so non-ngram configurations supplied only through the new generalized speculation field will not receive this downstream widening unless nextn is also populated. [::ai-dynamo/dynamo::]

ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator

  • The frozen runtime contract explicitly rejects positive nextn for forward_model="fpm" in aic-core/rust/aiconfigurator-core/src/engine/runtime.rs:334-374. This agrees with the PR’s stated limitation that speculative FPM candidates remain unsupported; OP/SOL paths must preserve that restriction. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

  • The legacy adapter still requires nextn_accepted whenever speculation is enabled and bounds it by nextn in src/aiconfigurator/sdk/config_adapter/schema.py:27-44. The new generic identity-resolution path should not inadvertently route legacy nextn inputs through a schema that omits these acceptance requirements. [::ai-dynamo/aiconfigurator::]

🔇 Additional comments: 12
crates/core/src/perfmodel/fpm/config.rs: 2

267-278: The non-Python build accepts generic none with parameters only because validate() runs first. It does not reject non-ngram kinds before resolving.

Without the python feature, resolve_with_registration accepts only ngram and none. That is consistent with the intent. With the python feature, the resolved speculation from Python replaces the validated value. validate() runs again at line 337, so the resolved value is re-checked. No defect found.

Reviewed c985cad. No new blocking findings in configuration validation, estimator selection/fallback, saved speculative identities, or Ngram/legacy nextn compatibility.

Independent validation: 412 SDK tests, 500 CLI/replay tests, 16 public Rust API tests, 6 adapter contract tests, and 8 tests executing the exact inserted adapter conversion passed. An additional 51 checks covered OP/SOL parity, fallback, and fresh-process reload for the speculative configurations. All 390 frozen-parity cases have passing evidence across runs; 10 reordered cases initially hit an unchanged temporary data-root leak and passed in a clean process.

The existing checkpoint error-classification and explicit-none adapter comments are nonblocking for this cost-API change. Validation establishes compatibility and parity with existing implementations, not new GPU serving-accuracy claims.
