fix(timing): keep the trace idle cap past timers that issue nothing - #1602
Conversation
test_runtime_idle_cap_handles_independent_stream_clock_drift fails on Linux CI with a tree-idle gap of 0.469-0.473 s against a 0.3 s cap. That value is the gap this trace produces when the per-root idle watchdog does not advance the pending timer at all, but the watchdog's decisions are silent, so a failing job cannot show why it missed. Log one DEBUG line per watchdog decision in ReplayBarrierCoordinator (armed, already armed, not armed with requests in flight, cancelled by an issue, fired with requests in flight, fired but advanced nothing with the group's pending timer count) and add LoopScheduler.pending_count_for_group for that last line. The integration test's gap failure message now prints the play's request timeline and that root's watchdog lines, so the next CI failure names the decision that let the gap through. No scheduling behaviour changes; the lines are DEBUG and lazily formatted. The cause of the miss is not addressed here. Signed-off-by: Frank Di Natale <3429989+FrankD412@users.noreply.github.com>
…AIP-2293) The per-root idle watchdog advances a tree's pending timers relative to the earliest one, assuming that timer ends the idle gap. A gated parent's join replay deadline shares the root's timer group but issues no request while its children are still running. When the watchdog fired with that deadline due (or ~1 ms out), the shift was ~0, the deadline ran and did nothing, and the tree stayed idle until its next request's natural timer. On CI this showed up as a 0.47 s idle gap against a 0.30 s cap in test_runtime_idle_cap_handles_independent_stream_clock_drift. LoopScheduler now reports each grouped timer's group once its coroutine returns (cancelled tasks excluded). The coordinator re-enforces the cap when that root's cap has already expired and nothing has been issued since, so a timer that issued nothing no longer absorbs the cap, while a timer that issued a request leaves later spacing untouched. Immediate grouped replay timers therefore never notify the new group-task observer when they finish, allowing the idle-cap stall to recur. - Original discussion: This remains present: the nonpositive-delay branches in
schedule_later,schedule_at_perf_sec, andschedule_at_perf_nscallexecute_async(coro)without preservinggroup_id. A grouped control timer that becomes due before scheduling therefore completes without notifying the replay coordinator, so an expired per-root idle cap may fail to advance the next request timer. Forward the group through immediate execution and attach the same completion observer used by fired handles.

I reviewed this PR at 588b3ebf0 against main (merge-base b1746a84a). Rechecking after a non-issuing timer addresses AIP-2293's captured collision without discarding request spacing; the remaining feedback is nonblocking.
Low: Regarding CodeRabbit's immediate-path comment, dropping group_id is reproducible, but the claimed recurrence does not follow: immediate tasks never enter the pending-timer minimum (loop_scheduler.py:180–190,445–460). With an immediate grouped no-op and a request five seconds away, both immediate-path probes pulled the request in after 0.0 s; the missing callback is an API-consistency concern, not a demonstrated recurrence of this stall.
Verified
- The scheduler/coordinator unit tests passed: 61 passed.
- The real independent-stream-drift integration test passed: 1 passed, including its idle-gap and parent-after-child assertions.
- Immediate tasks omitted completion notifications; an already-due registered timer notified its group.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winGuard the zero-delay rearm with the running group-task count.
Do not delete this rearm unconditionally. A fully idle root can receive a retained submission after its prior grouped tasks complete. Without this rearm, no completion observer remains to advance the pending timer.
The current
in_flightcheck also misses a grouped timer that has started but has not reachedobserve_issued(). Track running grouped tasks inLoopScheduler, and rearm only when that count is zero.pending_count_for_group()cannot provide this guard because it excludes timers whose callbacks have started.Suggested fix

Previously reported defects still present:
- Original discussion: The
pending_count_for_groupdocstring remains present and still merely restates the method and the immediately visible sum over unfired timers. - Original discussion: The test docstring remains present and still duplicates the test name and its pending-count log assertion without preserving any rationale or constraint.
- Original discussion: The test docstring remains present and still duplicates the test name's pre-expiry non-issuing-timer behavior without adding a lasting constraint or failure explanation.
- Original discussion: The test docstring remains present and still restates the named condition and outcome already demonstrated by the setup and assertions.
- Original discussion: The zero-delay idle-watchdog rearm still checks only
in_flight. A grouped timer may already be running without having reachedobserve_issued(), so the watchdog can advance later timers prematurely and collapse replay spacing. Track running tasks per group and rearm only when that count is zero.

I reviewed this PR at ad2b58160 against main (merge-base 15585512a). Rechecking after a non-issuing timer closes AIP-2293's captured idle-cap lapse while preserving spacing after an issue. Nothing blocks this scoped change.
Verified
- The scheduler/coordinator tests passed: 65 passed, including due and 1-ms-away control timers, immediate grouped tasks, cancellation, and spacing guards.
- Both real integration checks passed: independent-stream clock drift and system-idle advancement without bypassing the child join. The trace-cap assertion retains its original 0.300 s cap plus 0.150 s slack.
- Executable probes confirmed disabled-cap behavior, observer-exception cleanup, and root-specific diagnostic rendering. These checks do not independently establish the historical 600-run flake rate.
Resolved while reviewing
- Verified b3ceabc9a: immediate paths retain group ownership, and callbacks are attached only with an observer.
- Verified the explanatory docstring rewrites in 715e772f7 and ad2b58160.
Deferred to scope
- The running-but-not-yet-issued grouped-task overlap remains in stacked #1614, as you explicitly scoped it.

…unning The per-root idle watchdog treated a replay tree as idle whenever in_flight was zero. A grouped timer whose coroutine has started but not yet reached observe_issued() (for example, while it waits for a prefill slot or the credit send) was not counted. If the watchdog fired in that window, it moved the tree's later timers forward and collapsed the recorded replay spacing. Two paths reached it: - the zero-delay rearm in submit(), from 80662af (#1413), when a second timer lands on a barrier-blocked turn; - _on_root_timer_done(), from #1602, when a second timer returns without issuing a request. LoopScheduler now records the group of each running task, and running_count_for_group() counts them. _enforce_root_idle_cap() shifts nothing while the root still has a running grouped task, and leaves the cap expired. If that task issues a request, observe_issued() clears the cap. If it returns without issuing, _on_root_timer_done() applies the cap again. The scheduler stops counting the task before the observer runs. Guarding the submit() rearm with running_count_for_group() == 0, as the #1602 review suggested, does not work: the task calling submit() is itself a running grouped task, so the count never reaches zero and the cap stalls. Why
tests/integration/test_weka_flat_split_e2e.py::test_runtime_idle_cap_handles_independent_stream_clock_driftfails intermittently on Linux CI (3.11, 3.12 and 3.13, onmainand unrelated branches):The test is right. The trace idle cap (
--trace-idle-gap-cap-seconds) has a real gap. When a replay tree goes idle, the per-root watchdog inReplayBarrierCoordinatorwaits for the cap and then moves the tree's pending timers forward. The shift is measured to the earliest pending timer, on the assumption that this timer will issue the next request.A gated parent's join replay deadline (
BranchOrchestrator) shares the root's timer group but issues nothing while its children are still running. When the watchdog fired with that deadline due, or about 1 ms away:The tree then sat idle until the next request's natural timer. In this trace that is 0.47 s, which is exactly the value every CI failure reports. It needs the watchdog and the deadline to coincide, which depends on how long one streaming request takes, so it only shows up on some runs.

Only runs with
