[0.5.0] — 2026-10-21

Added

  • verify_receipt names the step a failure stopped at, in Python, Rust and Go (#93). The new failed_at field is "signature" when a proof rebuilt a root for the leaf and the signature step failed, "structure" on any earlier failure, and None/omitted when ok is true. Read it, rather than whether root is set, to tell a malformed receipt from one signed by a key you do not hold; its values agree with that test on every receipt. The Rust crate adds a non-exhaustive FailedAt enum and a ReceiptResult::failed_at field (a new public field, covered by the crate's planned 0.2.0), and the Python, Rust and Go CLIs print failed_at. Existing fields and verdicts are unchanged. The new test-vectors/receipt-v1/failed-at.json pins the stage for every receipt-v1 vector in all three runners. As with returned, Go reports no stage on fail-es256-secp256k1-key, whose key it cannot load.

Changed

  • Rust crate (scitt-cose-receipt) and Go verifier: a failed receipt reports the same root, tree_size and leaf_index as the Python package (#91). For an RFC 9162 receipt (vds=1), when every inclusion proof is well-formed but the signature step fails under each of them (a wrong key, an alg/key mismatch, an unsupported alg, a bad signature), all three verifiers now report the first proof that rebuilds a root, with ok still false. On any earlier failure they report nothing. Python has done this since 0.4.2; Rust 0.1.1 and Go left the fields empty, a side effect of #76. The values are an unauthenticated diagnostic, never a log root, size or position: read them only to tell a malformed receipt from one signed by a key you do not hold, and treat a receipt as verified only when ok is true. For the crate this reverses the 0.1.1 doc comment, which promised the fields only when ok is true, so its next release should be 0.2.0. The Rust verifier now refuses an attached payload before reading any proof, so that case still reports nothing. New receipt-v1 vectors fail-wrong-log-key, fail-unsupported-alg, fail-malformed-proof and fail-malformed-tail-proof (a valid proof followed by a malformed one, which reports nothing) pin the shape in every implementation, through a new returned field in expected.json. For a CCF receipt (vds=2) with an unsupported alg, Go now also reports the rebuilt root with ok false, as Python does. Known gaps: a key Go cannot load at all (secp256k1) ends its run before any result exists, and Rust and Go reject a non-integer alg or (not processing crit) never fail on an unknown critical label, both of which Python counts as the signature step.

Fixed

  • scitt_cose.__version__ reports the installed release. It is now read from the distribution metadata instead of a hard-coded string, which had left 0.4.1, 0.4.2 and 0.4.3 reporting 0.4.0. Without installed metadata

Looks like these dependencies are updatable in another way, so this is no longer needed.
