Very helpful right out of the gate. Congratulations! #28
Medical and financial stuff I wanted to keep confidential. For most notes I'm quite happy with MacVim.
How did it go?
I really like it! Some things in particular:
I love the vi-style j,k navigation at the top-level page (that is an undocumented feature, as far as I can tell)
Use of the esc key is very intuitive
When you put something in the trash it tells you how many days until it is permanently deleted, and you have the option of restoring the page (that is, taking it out of the trash)
Have you come back to write again?
Yes, on another day
What would help you use writui again?
writui is definitely a keeper for me, but there are two things that would make it better for me:
Make it so my Typinator expansions work. I have a Typinator abbreviation that produces something like this: Fri 16Oct2026 14:45 but in writui all I get is the letter "s". (Other abbreviations also result in just the letter "s", so it is not a function of that particular abbreviation.)
I use a dark theme, and writui implements it just fine. HOWEVER, I would love to have an option to either not bold the title or have a scalar (such as 0.5) to reduce its brightness. It hurts my eyes so much I add a bunch of blank lines after the title so I don't have to see that bright title. I even checked a box in my iTerm2 settings to not present bolded text as bold, but that didn't seem to help.
Thank you for trying writui, writing with it again on another day, and describing both what worked and what got in your way. The navigation, Esc behavior, and Trash recovery feedback is especially helpful.
The Typinator expansion collapsing to s needs investigation. Please don't share any private writing, but could you tell me whether the same abbreviation expands correctly in another terminal editor in that iTerm2 session, and whether Typinator is set to insert expansions by pasting or by simulated keystrokes? That should help narrow down where the input is lost.
The title brightness problem is clear too. Adding blank lines just to avoid looking at the title is a strong signal that its styling needs attention. I'll investigate a less intense title style that works across terminals. Thanks for including macOS, iTerm2, and the writui version; I'll follow up here with what I find.
Update: I opened #31 with a Bold title switch in Settings. Turning it off leaves the post's first heading plain while keeping other Markdown formatting. The macOS and Linux checks have passed, and the PR has steps and screenshots if you'd like to try it before release.
I also tested ordinary terminal paste with a synthetic expansion in an isolated vault; the full text came through. That has not reproduced the Typinator behavior, so I don't want to guess at its cause. The insertion-method and same-terminal comparison from my earlier question will help narrow it down.
Hi aakashns,
Thanks for being so responsive!
could you tell me whether the same abbreviation expands correctly in
another terminal editor in that iTerm2 session, and whether Typinator is
set to insert expansions by pasting or by simulated keystrokes? That should
help narrow down where the input is lost.
Here is the abbreviation I am using (partial screenshot of the Typinator
window):
which produces something like Sun 18Oct2026 09:59.
This abbreviation works fine in vim launched from an iTerm2 window. It also
works fine in MacVim. Perhaps (?) most significantly, it also works in Mini
Diarium which, like writui, is an encrypted app.
Here is how Brave AI answers your question about how Typinator inserts text:
It appears that you have updated your code to address my too-bright titles
problem.
I installed writui like this (as directed, I believe):
curl -fsSL https://writui.com/install.sh | bash
Poking around the internet it seems that curl is not a package manager like
Homebrew, and does not have an software update feature. To get the new
functionality should I just execute the above curl command again? If so, do
I need to delete something first?
Thanks for all of your help,

Thanks, Paul. Knowing the same abbreviation works in Vim inside iTerm2, MacVim, and Mini Diarium is useful. I still need to isolate why writui receives only s; I won't assume Typinator's insertion method from an AI answer.
For the title option, #31 is still a proposal and has not been released. The latest released version is v0.18.0; you can check yours with writui --version. If #31 is merged and a new release is published, run writui upgrade in your terminal. It will show what's changing and ask before upgrading. You don't need to delete the app or your vault, and rerunning the install command also works.
One small test, if you're willing: copy harmless text such as test 123 from another app, then use iTerm2's Edit > Paste while editing a writui post. Does the whole text appear? No need to share any private writing or Typinator snippets. This will help separate ordinary terminal paste from Typinator's expansion path.
The latest version (0.19.0) of writui (you can upgrade with writui upgrade) offers a "minimal" formatting setting for Markdown which removes all bold text. You can configure it on the settings page:
I'm investigating the typinator insertion. Full disclosure, the previous two replies were written by an AI agent (I'd asked it to manage the repo). This one is being written by me, a human. Going forward, AI-generated replies will be clearly marked. Sorry!
Sorry about my slow response.
The writui upgrade command worked great! I'm now at version (0.20.0).
When I copy text from another app, I am able to successfully paste into
writui using either iTerm's Edit> Paste or a simple right-mouse click.
I followed your directions to set Markdown styling to minimal; it does just
what I wanted! Thank you.
