feat(scm): add generate commit message button to source control input box - #2306
This PR adds a "Generate Commit Message" action to the VS Code Source Control (SCM) input box.
Key implementation details:
Registers the command zoo-code.generateGitCommitMessage under scm/inputBox in the inline group.
Uses the $(wand) codicon and appends "(Zoo Code)" to the command title in src/package.nls.json and all 17 locale files. This prevents confusion when multiple AI extensions (such as GitHub Copilot) register actions in the SCM menu.
Resolves the active Git repository from SCM command context (bare vscode.Uri, SCM rootUri, or SCM inputBox), then falls back to the active editor, then to the single/first repository. Duck-typing is used instead of instanceof vscode.Uri for compatibility across VS Code versions.
Retrieves staged changes first. If staged changes are empty, falls back to working directory changes and untracked files.
Wraps the entire operation (diff retrieval, provider config lookup, and LLM call) inside vscode.window.withProgress so the progress indicator and cancellation token are active throughout all slow I/O.
Calls singleCompletionHandler with the active LLM provider to generate a Conventional Commit message. The AbortSignal is forwarded all the way to the underlying HTTP client — including for OpenAI-family providers.
Displays progress with a cancellable notification. If cancelled by the user, the input box is not updated.
Redacts secrets, private keys, and credential tokens from diff content before sending to the LLM.
Cleans code blocks and quotation marks from the LLM output before populating repository.inputBox.value.
Path prefix matching uses both / and \ separators explicitly so repository resolution works correctly on Windows.
Test Procedure
Automated Unit Tests:
Run unit tests for the commit message generator and command registration:
cd src && bun x vitest run services/git/__tests__/commitMessageGenerator.spec.ts activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts
All 51 tests pass (42 for the generator, 9 for command registration).
Manual Test in Extension Development Host:
Open the project in VS Code.
Press F5 to launch the Extension Development Host window.
Open a folder with a Git repository.
Make a change to a file and stage it (or leave it in the working tree).
Open the Source Control (SCM) view.
Observe the magic wand icon $(wand) in the Source Control input box.
If other extensions (such as GitHub Copilot) are installed, open the dropdown menu and verify the entry clearly displays as Generate Commit Message (Zoo Code).
Click the button; confirm the progress notification appears and the input box receives a generated Conventional Commit message.
Click the cancel button during generation and confirm the input box is not updated.
Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (one major feature/fix per PR).

New Features
Generate a Git commit message from repository changes and place it in the SCM input box. Run the command from the SCM menu for the relevant repository.
Generation uses staged changes when available, falls back to working-tree changes, and can include untracked file names when no diff is available.
Sensitive information is redacted before processing, and generation can be cancelled.
The command is available with localized labels in multiple languages.
Adds a Git commit-message generator that reads repository changes, requests a cancellable completion, and places the cleaned message in the SCM input box. Registers the command in the Git SCM input-box menu, adds localized titles, and forwards abort signals through OpenAI completion requests.
Adds Git API access, repository selection, staged-first diff retrieval, sensitive-information redaction, prompt construction, and message cleanup. Tests cover repository selection, diffs, redaction, and prompt and cleanup behavior.
Completion and SCM output src/services/git/commitMessageGenerator.ts, src/services/git/__tests__/commitMessageGenerator.spec.ts, src/api/providers/openai.ts
Adds cancellable completion, SCM input-box assignment, notifications, and error handling. OpenAI completion requests receive an abort signal when one is provided.
Source Control command and contribution packages/types/src/vscode.ts, src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts, src/package.json, src/package.nls*.json
Adds the command identifier, command callback, and SCM input-box menu entry. Localization files add the command title, and tests cover provider selection and context forwarding.

Resolve credential redaction before merging: some passwords and secret keys can reach the configured model unchanged. The SCM button is also unavailable on normal stable installations, although the command has a palette fallback. Git errors, stale results and delayed cancellation remain additional bounded concerns.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: a generate commit message button in the source control input box. The raw summary confirms the command, its SCM inline menu entry, and the generator service. The title is short and specific, and it uses the conventional commit prefix. It does not list every detail, which is expected.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It links issue #2301 with Closes, and it has a Description section that explains the implementation choices. It has a Test Procedure with automated and manual steps, and a Pre-Submission Checklist. The Visual Snapshots and Videos sections are absent, and the Get in Touch section is missing. Both are non-critical for this change, since the PR adds a command, not a visual UI change. The Documentation Updates section is also absent, but the checklist states that no documentation update is needed. The description uses short, direct sentences, as the template requests. Some bullets are long, and some sentences contain several ideas. The manual test result is not recorded, so the reviewer must run the manual steps.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2301] requires an SCM input-box action, staged-diff generation with working-tree fallback, use of the configured provider, and insertion into the input box. The reviewed changes add and register zoo-code.generateGitCommitMessage, resolve the Git repository, retrieve the required diff, call singleCompletionHandler with the provider, and write the cleaned result to repository.inputBox.value. The added tests cover command registration, repository selection, diff fallback, generation, and cancellation. No coding requirement remains unmet in the available evidence.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files support [#2301]. They add command typing, registration, SCM menu contribution, localized titles, generation logic, and tests. The src/api/providers/openai.ts abort-signal forwarding supports the command's cancellable generation path. The additional redaction, cleanup, repository resolution, and cancellation behavior support the requested workflow. No demonstrated unrelated change remains.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The new generator awaits Git activation, diff retrieval, provider state, LLM completion, and progress completion. It then performs one synchronous repository.inputBox.value assignment. The other changes add command metadata and pass an abort signal to an HTTP request; they do not add storage writes, defaults, or persisted-state propagation.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle leak is present. The new progress callback creates one AbortController and one cancellation listener, and its finally block disposes the listener after diff retrieval, provider access, or completion (commitMessageGenerator.ts:247-295). singleCompletionHandler also disposes each temporary API handler in its existing finally block. The new command registration is stored in context.subscriptions (registerCommands.ts:68-73), and the OpenAI request receives the abort signal. No changed timer, watcher, or unowned task path can duplicate work after cancellation or disposal.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
Changed code still violates the security boundary in two concrete paths. src/services/git/commitMessageGenerator.ts:65-84 only matches selected credential formats and does not redact ordinary PII such as ownerEmail = "alice@example.com"; JSON credentials such as {"apiKey": "sk-live-123456789"} also do not match because the regex does not allow the quote before :. The resulting diff is inserted into the prompt at lines 218-219 and sent through singleCompletionHandler at lines 278-281, so a staged or working-tree diff can disclose that data to the configured provider. In addition, resolveGitRepository returns any context object with a diff function and object-valued inputBox at lines 119-121 without checking membership in git.repositories. The command is publicly registered at src/package.json:184-195 and forwards arbitrary command context at src/activate/registerCommands.ts:229-235; a caller can pass a fake repository, causing its diff() result to be sent to the provider and its input box to be modified.
Resolution
Expand sanitization or block transmission for representative PII and every supported credential format, including JSON/YAML keys, authorization and bearer headers, short credentials, and private keys. Add tests through staged, working-tree, and untracked-file flows. In resolveGitRepository, accept a context repository only after matching it to an entry in git.repositories by validated root URI or input-box identity; never return an arbitrary context object or invoke its methods. Add a command-context rejection test.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Three changed behaviors still lack focused regression evidence. src/package.json:184-195 adds a durable scm/inputBox action, but apps/vscode-e2e/src/visual/electron.visual.ts only snapshots the sidebar and Zoo Code webview, and no SCM snapshot or e2e file is in the PR. getRepositoryDiff catches staged and working-tree diff failures at src/services/git/commitMessageGenerator.ts:164-194; tests cover staged rejection with working success and staged empty with working rejection, but no test covers both rejections and the resulting no-diff behavior. OpenAiHandler.completePrompt now forwards options.abortSignal at src/api/providers/openai.ts:357-378, but its tests at src/api/providers/__tests__/openai.spec.ts:944-989 and the Azure test at 1292-1307 call it without options. Existing streaming abort tests do not exercise this changed method.
Resolution
Add a Playwright visual scenario with a deterministic Git SCM repository and a committed snapshot that shows the SCM input-box wand action and Generate Commit Message (Zoo Code) title. Add a getRepositoryDiff test where both diff(true) and diff(false) reject and assert the defined no-diff result. Add focused completePrompt tests that pass an AbortSignal and assert it appears in the OpenAI request options; cover the Azure AI Inference path as applicable.

getRepositoryDiff and provider.getState() run before withProgress. While they run, no progress notification appears and no cancel control is available. Move the withProgress call ahead of these steps, and check token.isCancellationRequested after each one. The GitRepository.diff signature takes no cancellation token, so cancelling during a slow diff still waits for the diff to return.

Move the `withProgress` call to wrap `getRepositoryDiff` and

Pass abortSignal to the OpenAI-compatible completion request.
OpenAiHandler.completePrompt accepts _options but never reads it, so the request ignores the signal. The new commit-message action passes abortSignal through singleCompletionHandler. Cancelling its progress notification therefore leaves the HTTP request running until the provider responds, and the result is discarded.

Add a resolver test for the bare root Uri that scm/inputBox passes.
Add a resolver test for the bare root Uri that scm/inputBox passes.
The command handler receives the provider's bare rootUri as its first argument. The existing tests do not cover that shape. The forwarding test in registerCommands.spec.ts passes a { rootUri: { fsPath } } wrapper and mocks generateCommitMessage, so resolveGitRepository never runs. The resolver tests use only wrapper objects ({ rootUri }, { inputBox }, a repository object). No test passes a bare Uri with two repositories and checks the selected repository. Against the current resolver, the case below fails: it has no branch for a bare vscode.Uri, so it falls back to repositories[0].
Add this case to the resolveGitRepository tests, before the active-editor case. That case sets vscode.window.activeTextEditor and never resets it, so a case placed after it can pass through the active-editor fallback.

Extend the resolveGitRepository tests with a case passing a bare root Uri and
multiple repositories, and verify it selects the repository whose rootUri
matches. Place the case before the active-editor test so editor state cannot
affect the result; keep the existing generateGitCommitMessage forwarding test
unchanged.
The cancellation test does not exercise the abort registration in commitMessageGenerator.ts. It calls cancellationHandler() before the progress callback runs, when that variable is still the initial no-op. The handler that production registers is never invoked. The production early return then passes because token.isCancellationRequested is already true. Removing the token.onCancellationRequested(() => { abortController.abort() }) registration would leave this test passing.
The suggested test below fires the registered handler during the provider call. It asserts that the abortSignal passed to singleCompletionHandler is aborted and that the input box is unchanged.

Update the cancellation test around generateCommitMessage to capture the handler
registered through the progress token and invoke it during
singleCompletionHandler, rather than calling the initial no-op before the
provider callback. Assert that the provider’s captured abortSignal is aborted
and the input box remains unchanged.
The getRepositoryDiff catch blocks turn a rejected diff into the no-changes result. No spec test rejects repository.diff. The suite passes whether errors are swallowed or propagated. Add a test where both calls reject, and decide whether that failure should show the no-changes message or a distinct error.
As per path instructions: "Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases."

Report Git diff read failures instead of "no changes".
Both repository.diff rejections in getRepositoryDiff are discarded. The function returns undefined, so the user sees "No staged or working directory changes found" and no Git error. Rethrow the captured error so the outer catch reports it.

Re-read the staged diff before writing the commit message.
generateCommitMessage reads the diff once, before the model call. It writes repository.inputBox.value after the call returns, without comparing against the current index. If files are staged or unstaged during the call, the input box can describe a commit that no longer matches the staged set.
Possible approach
Read the diff again after the completion and compare it with the captured value. If the values differ, leave the input box unchanged and show a message that asks the user to regenerate. Keep the current write when the values match. This narrows the race window but does not remove it, so treat it as a mitigation.

Key the stale-write check by repository and by invocation order.
generateCommitMessage writes the completion to repository.inputBox.value after the await. The only check before that write is cancellation. Two cases can overwrite text the user needs:
The user edits the commit box while a request is pending.
A newer request for the same repository finishes first, and an older request finishes after it.
Use these steps:
Before the first await in generateCommitMessage, give the invocation a number from a module-level counter. Code before the first await runs synchronously, so numbers follow call order even when getGitApi resolves late.
After resolveGitRepository returns, record the invocation's number as the latest for that repository only if it is higher than the number already recorded for that repository. Store the record in a map keyed by repository. Do not use one shared value for all repositories. A shared value lets a request for one repository discard the result of another. A late-resolving older request must not replace a newer request's record.
Capture repository.inputBox.value at the same point, before getRepositoryDiff runs.
After singleCompletionHandler returns and the cancellation check passes, write the message only if both conditions hold:
The recorded latest number for that repository is still this invocation's number.
The input box value still equals the captured draft.
If a newer request has replaced this invocation's record, return without writing. If the draft changed, show the existing information message and return. Both returns leave the withProgress callback to resolve normally, so the progress notification settles.
Two limits apply to this design:
If a newer request fails after it records its number, for example on a provider error, the older result is discarded without writing to the input box. The newer request still shows its own error.
Edits made before the draft is captured, while getGitApi and repository resolution run, are stored as the draft and are not detected.

Replace path.sep with both '/' and '\' literals when checking whether
an active editor URI lives under a repository root. path.sep is '\' on
Windows but VS Code fsPath values on Windows are still POSIX-style '/'
strings, so startsWith(root + path.sep) never matched and tests that
depend on active-editor resolution were selecting the wrong repository.
Also removes the now-unused 'path' import.
After cancellation during diff retrieval or provider.getState, the callback does not check cancellation before constructing and invoking singleCompletionHandler; it can start a completion for an already-cancelled operation.
A cancelled action may still initiate model work, incur usage, or surface a provider error before it reaches the post-completion cancellation check.
This can occur when: The progress token is cancelled before provider.getState resolves with valid configuration and the diff is nonempty.

Forward the commit message cancellation signal to the provider request.
Cancelling the commit message progress aborts abortController. That controller is passed as abortSignal to singleCompletionHandler at src/services/git/commitMessageGenerator.ts:275-278. The helper forwards the options unchanged. The completePrompt methods below accept _options but never read options.abortSignal. Their provider request therefore continues after cancellation. The input box write is skipped, but the provider work is not stopped.
Pass options?.abortSignal into each request. Use the same pattern as the OpenAI SDK call in src/api/providers/openai.ts. Poe's generateText call should receive abortSignal. For OpenAiNativeHandler, link the caller signal to its internal abortController instead of ignoring it.

Propagate the caller’s abort signal through the provider requests used by the
affected completePrompt implementations, following the existing OpenAI SDK
request pattern; pass it to Poe’s generateText call as well. In
OpenAiNativeHandler, connect the caller’s signal to its internal abortController
rather than ignoring it, so cancelling the commit-message operation stops
provider work.

The filter at src/services/git/commitMessageGenerator.ts:193 keeps every status-7 entry, but the test at src/services/git/__tests__/commitMessageGenerator.spec.ts:418-435 uses one untracked entry and substring checks. A collector that returned only its first match would still pass. Add a case with several untracked entries that are mixed with a tracked change, and assert the full output string.

completePrompt now passes options.abortSignal to the OpenAI SDK request as signal. The existing completePrompt tests pass no options and assert an empty second argument. The abort-signal assertions cover only createMessage. Removing the forwarding would not fail the existing completePrompt tests.

Forward the abort signal in completePrompt for providers that ignore it.
Cancelling generation aborts abortController, but singleCompletionHandler awaits completePrompt without racing the signal. Several providers accept options as _options and never read abortSignal, so their requests keep running after cancellation. Examples are src/api/providers/openrouter.ts (completePrompt at line 599), src/api/providers/lm-studio.ts (line 249), and src/api/providers/base-openai-compatible-provider.ts (line 215). Pass options?.abortSignal to the client call in these methods.

The test named "skips LLM call when cancelled between diff fetch and provider state read" cancels inside getState. No test cancels while getRepositoryDiff is pending. If the guard after diff retrieval were removed, getState would still run. The guard after getState would still stop the call before singleCompletionHandler, so this test would still pass.

Add secret_key and symbol-containing passwords to the redaction patterns.
SENSITIVE_PATTERNS misses secret_key= and password=pass@word123. Both values reach singleCompletionHandler unchanged in the diff prompt. The pattern needs a keyword directly followed by = or :, and its value class excludes @. Add secret[_-]?key to the keyword group. Allow symbols such as @ in the value class, and add tests for both forms.

Make the diff step honor cancellation.
The cancel button only fires token.onCancellationRequested, which aborts abortController. Neither reaches getRepositoryDiff, and GitRepository.diff accepts no cancellation argument. A slow or stuck Git diff keeps the progress notification open after the user cancels. Race getRepositoryDiff against cancellation so the callback returns as soon as the user cancels.

Description
This PR adds a "Generate Commit Message" action to the VS Code Source Control (SCM) input box.
Key implementation details:
zoo-code.generateGitCommitMessageunderscm/inputBoxin the inline group.$(wand)codicon and appends "(Zoo Code)" to the command title insrc/package.nls.jsonand all 17 locale files. This prevents confusion when multiple AI extensions (such as GitHub Copilot) register actions in the SCM menu.vscode.Uri, SCMrootUri, or SCMinputBox), then falls back to the active editor, then to the single/first repository. Duck-typing is used instead ofinstanceof vscode.Urifor compatibility across VS Code versions.vscode.window.withProgressso the progress indicator and cancellation token are active throughout all slow I/O.singleCompletionHandlerwith the active LLM provider to generate a Conventional Commit message. TheAbortSignalis forwarded all the way to the underlying HTTP client — including for OpenAI-family providers.repository.inputBox.value./and\separators explicitly so repository resolution works correctly on Windows.Test Procedure
