Closes: #

Description

Validate that the target checkpoint resolves to a commit before restore runs Git clean or reset.
If the commit is missing, report an error without changing workspace files or checkpoint state.

Restore failures now reach the user, and the task recovers safely:

  • ShadowCheckpointService rethrows the original restore error, even with no error listener. checkpointRestore passes it on instead of swallowing it or disabling checkpoints.
  • A failed delete restore does not save messages or recreate the task. The user sees the error, then a localized Restart prompt. Accepting rehydrates the task from history, but only if it is still the current task.
  • A failed edit restore discards the pending edit, so it can never be applied on a later rehydration.
  • Plain and completion checkpoint restores show the specific, localized reason and log the error.

Checkpoint hashes from the webview are validated before any Git call:

  • checkpointRestore and checkpointDiff accept only a full 40-character SHA-1 or 64-character SHA-256 hash that the current task recorded as a checkpoint_saved message.
  • This covers delete, edit, checkpointRestore, completionCheckpointRestore and checkpointDiff.
  • Other values are rejected with the localized errors.checkpoint_invalid_hash message, and Git is never called.
  • The checkpointRestore message handler runs this check before cancelling the running task, so an invalid hash never interrupts it.

New i18n keys in all 18 locales: errors.checkpoint_restore_failed, errors.checkpoint_missing, errors.checkpoint_invalid_hash, checkpoints.restart_after_restore_failure, checkpoints.restart.

Known follow-ups, out of scope:

Test Procedure

  • From src, run npx vitest run core/checkpoints core/webview/__tests__/checkpointRestoreHandler.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.checkpoint.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.delete.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.edit.spec.ts services/checkpoints i18n: all 10 files pass.
  • Tests cover: a recorded hash is accepted; malformed, abbreviated, unrecorded and non-string hashes are rejected before any Git call (restore and diff); a delete restore that succeeds but then fails while saving, loading history or rehydrating surfaces the error.
  • pnpm --dir src run check-types: passed.
  • eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 on the touched TS files: passed. Suppression counts did not increase.
  • node scripts/find-missing-translations.js: no missing translations.
  • Test environment: Windows 11, Node.js 22.23.1, pnpm 10.8.1.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Checkpoint restores now verify that the requested checkpoint exists before changing files. Missing or invalid checkpoints leave workspace files and checkpoint history unchanged.
    • Invalid checkpoint references are rejected before restore or comparison begins.
    • Failed restores show localized error details and no longer disable checkpointing or change task messages or history.
    • Valid restores reinstate saved file contents and remove files created afterward.
    • A failed edit restore no longer clears a newer pending edit.
    • Restoring task history no longer applies a saved provider profile to a different active task.
  • New Features

    • After a failed restore stops a task, you can choose to restart it if it is still active.
    • Checkpoint errors and recovery prompts are available in 19 languages.

Checkpoint restore and diff validate hashes against task history. Restore verifies commit objects before changing workspace files. Webview handlers report restore failures, protect pending-edit ownership, and offer guarded task restart. Task identity checks guard profile updates and rehydration.

The service checks that a hash resolves to a commit before cleanup or reset. Restore and diff operations validate recorded hashes of 40 or 64 lowercase hexadecimal characters. Tests cover missing commits, valid restores, invalid references, and failure-state preservation.
Handle failures and guard task state

Restore failures are logged and rethrown without disabling checkpoints. Pending edits are cleared only when their owner matches. Delete-restore failures can prompt a restart, which proceeds only while the task remains current. Task identity checks guard profile activation and rehydration. Tests cover these behaviors and error reporting.
Add localized messages and translation coverage
src/i18n/locales/*/common.json, src/i18n/__tests__/checkpoint-translations.spec.ts
Locale files add checkpoint restore errors, missing-checkpoint messages, and restart prompts. Translation tests check message values and interpolation across 19 locales.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

PASS. Focused coverage exists for the changed behavior. ShadowCheckpointService.spec.ts:325-454 covers missing commit/tree/blob objects, no-listener error propagation, workspace/history preservation, valid restore, and unexpected Git failures. checkpoint.test.ts:283-336,434-460 covers restore failure propagation and 40/64-character recorded-hash validation before service/Git calls. The webview handler tests cover localized Error/string failures, invalid hashes before cancellation, completion restore, restart consent, task races, and pending-edit cleanup (checkpointRestoreHandler.spec.ts:185-410, webviewMessageHandler.checkpoint.spec.ts:144-389). Provider profile guards and mode-write options have focused tests (ClineProvider.sticky-profile.spec.ts:399-464,568-732), and the owner-token store has focused tests (PendingEditOperationStore.spec.ts:42-58). All 18 changed locales are checked by checkpoint-translations.spec.ts:36-78. The UI changes are transient VS Code notifications, not durable component UI, so no Playwright snapshot is required.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No concrete security-boundary failure is introduced. Webview checkpoint payloads are schema-checked, and assertRecordedCheckpoint accepts only lowercase 40- or 64-character hashes recorded by the current task before checkpointRestore or checkpointDiff obtains a service. The only changed Git restore path calls commitExists with that validated hash before clean or reset; no changed code adds shell execution, secret/PII output, or an allowlist bypass. Profile and pending-edit changes add task-identity and owner checks rather than weakening controls.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No concrete lifecycle leak or duplicate-work path was introduced. The new rehydration guard checks task identity before replacement; when the current task changes, it removes the discarded task's provider listeners and aborts the discarded task. Normal replacement removes the old task's listeners. Pending edit timers are cleared on failed edits, and owner tokens preserve newer pending edits. Provider disposal also cancels queued task execution and disposes current tasks.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The prior persistence race remains unresolved. During history rehydration, the changed calls pass expectedCurrentTaskId at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1371-1374 and 1404-1411, but activateProviderProfileUnlocked persists before applying that guard. ProviderSettingsManager.activateProfile writes currentApiConfigName at src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts:488-498; then ClineProvider.ts:2240-2247 writes listApiConfigMeta, currentApiConfigName, and provider settings. If another task becomes current while profile activation is pending, those writes remain, while updateTaskApiHandlerIfNeeded and sticky history persistence skip the mismatched task at 2178-2185 and 2192-2204. The stale rehydrated task is then discarded at 1460-1464. This leaves persisted provider defaults inconsistent with the task that remains current. The changed path has no rollback or atomic commit across these writes. The added tests cover a mocked guard but not this persistence race.

Resolution

Use a non-persisting profile-load operation for history restoration. Confirm the expected task is still current before writing global/provider-profile state, mode state, or task history. Make the related writes atomic, or restore every completed write if a later write or the current-task check fails. Add a race test that changes the current task while profile activation is pending and verifies persisted provider settings, currentApiConfigName, mode state, and task history remain consistent.

Add an untracked-file cleanup assertion to the valid-restore test.

The "still restores normally to a valid commit" test never creates a file that was absent from every checkpoint before it calls restoreCheckpoint. Removing git.clean from restoreCheckpoint would leave this suite passing. Add an unsaved file before the restore and assert that it is removed.

337-340: Trivial · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Add a test for a saved checkpoint whose commit object is gone.

The new restore tests use "0".repeat(40), a hash that is never saved. No test covers a hash that remains in the checkpoint list after its commit object is removed. The current commitExists check rejects that case before clean runs, so the code handles it correctly today. A change that gates restore on checkpoint-list membership would pass both new tests. For a saved hash with a missing object, it would run git clean before reset --hard fails, which deletes untracked files.

Add a test in the same describe block as the missing-commit test. It should save a checkpoint, remove that checkpoint's commit object from the shadow repository, and call restoreCheckpoint with the saved hash. Assert that the call rejects with the expected message, that the untracked file still exists, and that the checkpoint list is unchanged.

The guard stops clean and reset, which is good. Does the user ever see this message, though? I could not find a production error listener, so the emit("error") in the catch block throws before throw error runs. checkpointRestore then swallows the failure, disables checkpoints for the task, and the delete handler goes on to saveTaskMessages and createTaskWithHistoryItem. Could checkpointRestore surface this error and stop the caller?

Addressed in a044e48:

  • ShadowCheckpointService now rethrows the original restore error even with no error listener, and checkpointRestore propagates it instead of swallowing it or disabling checkpoints.
  • Failed delete restore: no message save or task recreation. The user sees the localized error and then a localized Restart prompt; accepting rehydrates the task from history (only if it is still the current task).
  • Failed edit restore: the pending edit is cleared so it can never be applied on later rehydration.
  • Plain and completion checkpoint restores show the specific localized reason (errors.checkpoint_restore_failed / errors.checkpoint_missing) and log the error.
  • New keys added in all 18 locales; covered by handler, message-handler, service and locale tests.

Known follow-up (out of scope here): when the checkpoint service is unavailable or the timestamp isn't found, restore is still a silent no-op; tracked in simurg79/Roo-Code#47.

Rethrow the original restore error from ShadowCheckpointService and checkpointRestore. On a failed delete restore, skip saving and rehydration and offer a localized Restart prompt; on a failed edit restore, discard the pending edit. Show localized, specific failure reasons for plain and completion restores.

Nitpick Add a recorded SHA-256 case to the checkpointDiff tests.

312-318: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Add a recorded SHA-256 case to the checkpointDiff tests.

The new SHA-256 acceptance test calls only checkpointRestore. The checkpointDiff tests use only 40-character hashes. Both entry points share assertRecordedCheckpoint, so the diff path accepts a recorded 64-character hash today. A regression that rejects 64-character hashes only in checkpointDiff would pass the suite. Add a diff case so this path is covered.

`getDiff` receives it as the `from` value. Use the existing `mockTask` and
`mockCheckpointService` test setup.

@coderabbitai Follow-up on review 584f720, addressed in 8a83890:

  • SHA-256 diff coverage (follow-up comment): added a checkpointDiff test that records a 64-character hash and checks that getDiff receives it as from.
  • Regression Evidence: errors.checkpoint_invalid_hash is now part of the locale test contract for all 18 locales. The invalid-hash diff tests also check that RepoPerTaskCheckpointService.create is never called.
  • Persistence Integrity: this concerns global and provider-profile writes during history rehydration while the current task changes. It is the same global profile-write race as the earlier thread. It is tracked in [BUG] History restore can desync the active profile during a task switch simurg79/Roo-Code#48 and is out of scope for this checkpoint-restore PR.
  • Description check: no approved Zoo-Code issue exists for this fix yet, so the issue link stays pending. The PR author will fill in the Discord username.

@simurg79 Confirmed in 8a8389073:

  • SHA-256 diff coverage: The test records a 64-character hash and asserts that getDiff receives { from: sha256Hash, to: undefined }.
  • Invalid-hash rejection: The diff tests now assert that RepoPerTaskCheckpointService.create is never called.
  • Locale contract: errors.checkpoint_invalid_hash is included for all 18 listed locales, with fallback disabled.

These changes address the specific test follow-ups. I inspected the commit and test assertions. I did not run the tests. This assessment follows the supplied regression-evidence guidance.

Persistence Integrity: The earlier inspection established that the global-profile writes predate this PR. I retain the withdrawal of that concern as a required change here. The race remains separate work, tracked in issue 48.

@coderabbitai Pre-merge follow-up for 8a83890:

  • Persistence Integrity: This is the existing global model-profile race. The profile writes predate this PR, and the race is tracked in [BUG] History restore can desync the active profile during a task switch simurg79/Roo-Code#48. It is out of scope here, so no code change.
  • Description check: The Discord username has been added to Get in Touch. No approved Zoo-Code issue exists yet, so the Closes line and the Issue Linked item stay as they are. The Visual Snapshot item does not apply because the change has no durable UI; the only new UI is transient VS Code notifications.

No code changes were needed, so there is no new commit.

@coderabbitai Lifecycle Resource Cleanup: addressed in 7710024. The restart guard branch in createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked now removes the discarded task's taskEventListeners entry before aborting it, through a shared removeTaskEventListeners helper also used by in-place replacement and cleanupFailedHistoryTask. The it.each in checkpointRestoreHandler.spec.ts (different task current / no task current) now asserts the cleanup ran once and the map entry was removed. Persistence Integrity remains the pre-existing global-profile race tracked in simurg79/Roo-Code#48, as you agreed earlier.

@simurg79 Confirmed in 77100241e. The specific Lifecycle Resource Cleanup finding is addressed.

  • The restart guard calls removeTaskEventListeners(task) before aborting the discarded task.
  • The helper invokes the cleanup functions and deletes the task’s taskEventListeners entry.
  • In-place replacement and cleanupFailedHistoryTask use the same helper.
  • The it.each covers a different current task and no current task. Both cases assert one cleanup call and removal of the map entry.

I inspected the commit and test assertions. I did not run the tests. This assessment follows the supplied lifecycle-cleanup and regression-evidence guidance.

Follow-up in ba408c1: the listener cleanup is now a module-level removeTaskEventListeners(listeners, task) helper instead of a private method, because provider test doubles in removeClineFromStack-delegation.spec.ts and single-open-invariant.spec.ts call the prototype methods without the full class. The behavior is unchanged.

Compare the captured task instance after the awaits.

The guard at line 1461 compares only taskId. A createTask call whose taskId matches the rehydrating task can install a newer instance during the awaits. The guard passes, and the stale rehydrated task aborts and replaces that instance.

Nice! Thanks for iterating on this PR - had a comment to see if we could also check the hash before a cancel task as well if it's easy enough to add.

The webview handler calls provider.cancelTask() before this check runs (webviewMessageHandler.ts:1787). If the hash is malformed or unrecorded, the user's running task is cancelled and then the restore is rejected. Should the hash check run in the handler before the cancel, or is the cancel intended in this case?

Good catch — fixed in 94711ae. The checkpointRestore handler now runs assertRecordedCheckpoint against the current task before provider.cancelTask(), so a malformed or unrecorded hash shows the localized error and leaves the running task alone. The check still also runs inside checkpointRestore. New tests in webviewMessageHandler.checkpoint.spec.ts cover malformed and unrecorded hashes (no cancel, no restore) and confirm a recorded hash still cancels before restoring.

@coderabbitai Follow-up "Compare the captured task instance after the awaits" (ClineProvider.ts 1462-1463): fixed in 94711ae. The guard is now oldTask !== currentTask, so a newer instance with the same taskId installed during the awaits is left alone and the rehydrated task is cleaned up and aborted. checkpointRestoreHandler.spec.ts adds a same-id replacement case.

Pre-merge "Persistence Integrity": not changed in this PR. On merge base f92cb93, activateProviderProfileUnlocked already does the unguarded global writes (listApiConfigMeta, currentApiConfigName, provider settings) in a Promise.all with no rollback, and history restore already called it with no current-task check. This PR only adds expectedCurrentTaskId guards, which make that race smaller. The global profile-write race is tracked separately as simurg79/Roo-Code#48.

@simurg79 Confirmed in 94711ae22. The specific “Compare the captured task instance after the awaits” finding is addressed.

  • oldTask !== currentTask compares the current instance with the instance captured before the awaits.
  • If another instance becomes current, the guard cleans up and aborts only the newly constructed task.
  • The regression test now includes a newer instance with the same taskId. It asserts no replacement, no scheduling, no abort of the newer instance, and removal of the discarded task’s listeners.

I inspected the code and test assertions. I did not run the tests.

Persistence Integrity: The comparison with f92cb9339 confirms your explanation. The base already contains the global writes in Promise.all and the history-restoration activation calls without a current-task guard. This PR retains those writes and adds task-specific guards.

I retain the withdrawal of this race as a required change for this PR. It remains tracked in simurg79/Roo-Code#48. This assessment follows the supplied persistence-integrity guidance.

Nitpick Cover the rehydrated replacement task in the ordinary checkpointRestore tests.

333-341: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value

Cover the rehydrated replacement task in the ordinary checkpointRestore tests.

The ordinary checkpointRestore tests return the original task from getCurrentTask() on every call. cancelTask() rehydrates the cancelled task as a new instance with the same taskId, and the handler restores the task that is current after the wait. That replacement path has no test.
