test(run-state): add run-state kernel model checker - #2244
This PR adds scripts/check-run-state-kernel.ts. The script is a model checker for the pure nextRunState function in src/core/task/run-state/runState.ts. It does not share state with taskLifecycle.ts.
The checker runs a breadth-first search over all events. The bounds are depth 20, 20,000 states, 3 stream generations, and 3 ask timestamps. Because the search is breadth-first, each counterexample is a shortest one.
At each step the checker verifies these points:
The kernel result matches a copy of the Guard and Effect columns of the Transitions table in task-lifecycle-target-architecture.md. A rejection must leave the state unchanged.
The seven design-doc invariants hold.
The kernel does not change its state or its event.
After the search the checker requires these points:
Every action is reachable. A settle is askSettledStale only when a newer ask is pending.
Every guard clause is the only failing clause in some rejected event.
All 8 named witnesses are reached.
All 12 ordered pairs of event sources occur between events that change the state.
No unseen successor exists at the depth bound.
The checker also runs 31 known-unsafe kernels. Each one must fail for its own reason, and each caughtBy pattern matches only that reason. Two more self-tests show that a small depth bound and a small state budget each fail the checker.
The PR adds the checker as the ninth step of lifecycle:model-check. code-qa.yml already runs that command, so CI runs the checker on every PR. The PR also updates task-lifecycle-model.md (new section, Coverage audit row, "Extending the model") and task-lifecycle-target-architecture.md.
Reviewers must check these points:
The rows table in the script must match the Transitions table in the design doc. The checker compares the kernel with this copy, so an error in the copy hides a kernel error.
The witness checks and the source-pair rule have no negative self-test. Such a test needs a hook in Options that lets a test change the event list. A follow-up issue can cover this.
Test Procedure
Run pnpm exec tsx scripts/check-run-state-kernel.ts from the repository root.
Make sure the output ends with Run-state kernel model check passed: 16125 reachable states ... 33 unsafe kernels caught, fixed point at depth 15 (bound 20).
Run the same command from another directory. The result is the same.
Change failedClauses.length === 1 to >= 1 in the script. The run fails with unsafe kernel not caught as expected: stream-start-guard-dropped.

Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): Not applicable. This PR has no UI change.
Documentation Impact: I checked if my changes need documentation updates (see "Documentation Updates" section below).
Expanded lifecycle model-check coverage to include run-state transitions, invariants, event handling, and representative unsafe scenarios.
The lifecycle check command now runs nine checks, including bounded exploration of reachable run states.
Documentation
Updated architecture and extension guidance to describe the run-state checker’s scope, validation expectations, limits, and relationship to the cleanup protocol model.
The lifecycle model-check suite now runs a bounded checker for the in-memory run-state kernel. The checker compares transitions with a reference table, validates state and transition invariants, explores reachable states, and tests unsafe variants. Architecture documentation describes the checker’s scope and requirements.

Summary
Reference model and checker contract scripts/check-run-state-kernel.ts, docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-model.md, docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-target-architecture.md
The checker defines run-state events, guards, effects, and witnesses. The documentation adds the checker to the baseline suite and describes its scope, bounds, and extension requirements.
Transition and reachability checks scripts/check-run-state-kernel.ts
The checker validates state and transition invariants, tests all 32 turn-flag combinations, and explores reachable states and event interleavings within declared limits.
Checker validation and suite integration scripts/check-run-state-kernel.ts, package.json, docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-model.md
The checker runs representative scenarios, unsafe variants, and bound self-tests. The lifecycle model-check command now runs it after the tool-turn checker.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2136: Adds JSON-replacement and task-history initialization checks to lifecycle:model-check and updates the baseline documentation.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2283: Changes Task.abort and Task.abortReason to read run-state latches produced by nextRunState; this checker validates related kernel transitions and invariants.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to ad3b5
This change adds a bounded checker for the run-state transition logic and runs it as the final lifecycle model-check step. It affects only development and CI checks, not production runtime behavior. I found no concrete merge-blocking issue, although I did not run the checker myself.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is mostly complete. It includes the linked issue, implementation details, test steps, review risks, documentation impact, and checklist information. Some checklist items remain unchecked, and the Get in Touch section is missing, but these omissions are non-critical.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1792 coding requirements are implemented. scripts/check-run-state-kernel.ts performs bounded breadth-first exploration of nextRunState, checks design invariants and shortest traces, enforces event reachability, named landmarks, guard coverage, interleaved sources, state budget, and unseen-successor detection. The stream-after-failure-cleanup witness now uses lastEndedStreamFailedAndCleaned, with currentStreamFailed tracking, so it requires failure and cleanup before a later stream. The checker includes the required stale askSettled action, cleanup-model boundary documentation, unsafe-kernel tests, and bound tests. package.json adds it to pnpm lifecycle:model-check.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files remain within Issue #1792. They add the run-state checker, register it in the lifecycle model-check command, and document its model scope, coverage, bounds, and cleanup boundary. Unsafe-kernel tests, turn-event checks, and bound self-tests support the checker contract. No unrelated production behavior changes.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure conditions. The new checker generates bounded synthetic events and IDs, clones them before calling nextRunState, reads only the fixed repository source path, and does not accept external data, execute unvalidated input, handle secrets or PII, or bypass approval or allowlist controls. The package change only appends this fixed checker to lifecycle:model-check.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes documentation, the model-check command, and adds an in-memory checker for nextRunState. The checker only uses readFileSync to inspect source text; it has no persistence write, rollback, atomic-update, or consumer-default path. The changed architecture text explicitly excludes persistence and Task.ts wiring from this submodel.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path introduces a resource leak or duplicate work. The PR changes only architecture documentation, the model-check command, and a standalone checker that imports pure nextRunState, reads source text, and performs assertions. It does not add listeners, watchers, timers, tasks, providers, or cancellation/restart work in production lifecycle code.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The changed checker adds semantic-witness and event-source-interleaving failure checks, but it has no focused negative coverage for those branches. Options only varies step, table use, and bounds (scripts/check-run-state-kernel.ts:33-38). eventsFor is fixed (317-357), so the self-tests cannot remove a witness or source pair. The assertions at 608-617 can therefore regress without a test proving the matching error. The architecture audit also records that these checks have no self-test (docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-model.md:203).
Resolution
Add an event-generation seam or equivalent test hook in Options. Add focused negative variants that remove each required semantic witness and each required source interleaving, then assert that runModelCheck reports the matching unreachable semantic witnesses or missing event-source interleavings error.

Remove the turn model from the run-state kernel checker. The kernel has no turn events.
rows and eventTags include seven turn tags, but nextRunState has no turn cases and no default. The parity assertion reports these tags as missing from the kernel and throws. checkTurnRegion() also throws, because nextRunState returns undefined for turn events. pnpm lifecycle:model-check therefore fails before it can pass the full contract.
Filtering eventTags and removing the checkTurnRegion() call is not enough. The turn-start-clears-first-chunk-wait unsafe kernel is applied only to turnStarted events. After the call is removed, no check applies it, so runUnsafeKernels() fails. The stream-start-resets-turn kernel writes a turn field that only the flatten() spread reads, so it must also be removed.
Update the design-document prose in docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-model.md to match:
Line 274: remove "except the seven turn events".
Line 282: delete the bullet that describes the seven turn events and the five turn fields.
Line 289: change the hard-coded unsafe-kernel count to the new total.
Add turn modeling back only with the kernel turn-state work. The kernel has no turn state yet.

Major: remove the turn model. This finding does not apply after a rebase. The reviewed head is based on 13cb03a16, and nextRunState there has no turn cases. main (16fced147, #2198) added the seven turn events to nextRunState. CI tests the merge of this branch with main. The turn rows in the checker are necessary there. Without them, the event-tag check fails. I will rebase this branch onto main. After the rebase, the kernel and the checker table have the same event tags.
Minor: stream-after-failure-cleanup witness. The finding is valid. The next push records the streaming_failed reason of the ended stream in ModelState. The witness then requires that recorded failure.
Turn model: I withdraw the recommendation to remove it. The supplied architecture guidance also includes the seven turn events. Keep those rows. After the rebase, run pnpm lifecycle:model-check to verify that the checker and production kernel have matching event tags.
stream-after-failure-cleanup: The planned change addresses the concern by tying the witness to the ended stream’s recorded streaming_failed reason. This finding remains open until the change is pushed and verified.

Enumerate the full bounded askTs domain.
The checker contract requires every non-turn event in every reachable state within the ask-timestamp bound. nextRunState accepts any askStarted.askTs while the run is active, but eventsFor emits only askCount + 1. After timestamp 2 starts, the search cannot replace it with timestamp 1 or another timestamp 2, so those production-valid orders remain unchecked.

@coderabbitai The Linked Issues finding about the stream-after-failure-cleanup witness does not apply to the current head (ad3b53c69). The checker already records and requires the ended stream's failure reason:
ModelState.currentStreamFailed is set only when reasonSet("streaming_failed") writes the reason while a stream is live.
ModelState.lastEndedStreamFailedAndCleaned is set from currentStreamFailed and cleanupFinished when that stream ends.
The witness requires prev.lastEndedStreamFailedAndCleaned, so a clean stream, or a stream that ended with another reason, does not satisfy it.
The flag records that the stream failed with streaming_failed, and not the reason value. streaming_failed is the only reason that sets the flag, so the witness proves the reason the issue requires. You verified the same change in your reply on the inline thread for f2e37bb20.

Lines 447–449 record that the ended stream both failed and completed cleanup, then reset currentStreamFailed.
Lines 265–271 require that recorded history before accepting a new stream as the witness.
The Boolean flag is sufficient. The checker does not need to store the reason value separately.
I withdraw the Linked Issues finding for this revision. The saved assessment is stale on this point. This inspection does not establish the current CI or approval status.

Transition notes:
4. `streamCleanupFinished` needs only a live stream. It covers both the abort drain and the failure cleanup (flows 7, 8). The field lives on the live stream, so the next stream starts with it false (PR-2).

#### Transitions
Transition notes:
7. `reasonSet` is the only writer of `reason`. The first write wins (PR-3). A later write is a no-op, not a rejection. Until RSK-19 merges, the code still overwrites the reason in race R-4.
@edelauna I checked head ad3b53c69. Here is what remains:
Negative self-tests: The saved Regression Evidence warning still applies. The checker asserts missing semantic witnesses and source interleavings, but has no focused self-tests for those failure paths. Add an event-generation hook or equivalent test seam, then verify that removing required coverage produces the matching error. This is a test-coverage gap, not a confirmed kernel defect.
Pending checks:Zoo Code / PR review gate is PENDING. The aggregate codecov/patch check is IN_PROGRESS. All other returned checks passed.
Review status: GitHub still reports CHANGES_REQUESTED and merge state BLOCKED. The review status needs reconciliation after the remaining assessment is settled.
No further changes are needed for the turn model or stream-after-failure-cleanup. Those concerns were withdrawn or addressed. All three CodeRabbit review threads are resolved.
I have not changed the approval status in this reply.

Add an event-generation seam or equivalent test hook in `Options`. Add focused

## Extending the model
Run-state kernel changes belong in `scripts/check-run-state-kernel.ts`. Update the guard and effect table in the checker together with the Transitions table in the target-architecture document, and add a known-unsafe kernel for each new check.

## Verification strategy
1. Keep the bounded model-check suite. It gives exhaustive bounded safety proofs with shortest-witness counterexamples. Extend it to the new `nextRunState` function. Do not replace it.

Description
This PR adds
scripts/check-run-state-kernel.ts. The script is a model checker for the purenextRunStatefunction insrc/core/task/run-state/runState.ts. It does not share state withtaskLifecycle.ts.The checker runs a breadth-first search over all events. The bounds are depth 20, 20,000 states, 3 stream generations, and 3 ask timestamps. Because the search is breadth-first, each counterexample is a shortest one.
At each step the checker verifies these points:
task-lifecycle-target-architecture.md. A rejection must leave the state unchanged. After the search the checker requires these points:
askSettledStaleonly when a newer ask is pending. The checker also runs 31 known-unsafe kernels. Each one must fail for its own reason, and each
caughtBypattern matches only that reason. Two more self-tests show that a small depth bound and a small state budget each fail the checker. The PR adds the checker as the ninth step of
lifecycle:model-check.code-qa.ymlalready runs that command, so CI runs the checker on every PR. The PR also updatestask-lifecycle-model.md(new section, Coverage audit row, "Extending the model") andtask-lifecycle-target-architecture.md.Reviewers must check these points:
rowstable in the script must match the Transitions table in the design doc. The checker compares the kernel with this copy, so an error in the copy hides a kernel error.Optionsthat lets a test change the event list. A follow-up issue can cover this.Test Procedure
