feat(vscode-lm): support image input conversion and shim data parts - #2196
Ports the image-input transform and VS Code shim support from simurg79/Roo-Code#16 (simurg79/Roo-Code#16). Converts supported base64 image input into VS Code LM data parts and adds shim support and focused tests. Adaptations: provider/UI changes, version bumps, lockfile changes, and the changeset were skipped. Placeholders were added for image URLs, empty image data, and unsupported formats. No changeset or CHANGELOG entries were added. Scope: only the seven requested transform, shim, and test files. Validation: commit-hook ESLint and Prettier passed; unit tests were not run during this PR-creation task.

Added support for creating language model data parts from images, text, and JSON, with customizable MIME types. Text and JSON parts use text/plain and application/json by default.
PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP base64 images can be converted to image parts when image support is available.
Bug Fixes
URL-based images, unsupported formats, and images without decoded data now display a text placeholder instead of causing an error.
The VS Code shim adds and exports LanguageModelDataPart with image, text, and JSON factories. Image conversion creates image parts for supported media types with nonempty decoded base64 data. Other inputs use text placeholders.
Changes: Language-model image parts
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Add and expose LanguageModelDataPart packages/vscode-shim/src/classes/Additional.ts, packages/vscode-shim/src/vscode.ts, packages/vscode-shim/src/index.ts, packages/vscode-shim/src/api/create-vscode-api-mock.ts, packages/vscode-shim/src/__tests__/Additional.test.ts
The shim adds and exposes LanguageModelDataPart. Its factories create image, text, and JSON parts. Tests check data bytes and default or custom MIME types, and verify JSON serialization errors and falsy values.
Image conversion creates image parts for supported media types with nonempty decoded base64 data. Other inputs use text placeholders. Tests cover message and tool-result content.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2159: Forwards supported images as bytes in messages and tool results, and uses image-aware token counting and context checks.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the two main changes: image input conversion in the vscode-lm transform and the new LanguageModelDataPart shim data part. It matches the changeset, which adds image conversion in vscode-lm-format.ts and the LanguageModelDataPart class with its exports. It is specific and follows the conventional-commit style. It is slightly long at 67 characters, but it stays clear.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused coverage is present for the changed behavior. Transform tests cover decoded PNG/JPEG/GIF/WebP data in both message and tool-result paths, URL images, empty and invalid base64, unsupported media types, and the missing host factory error. Shim tests cover construction, image byte/MIME preservation, text and JSON encoding with default and custom MIME types, rejection of undefined/function/Symbol JSON values, and serializable falsy values. The export and mock additions are mechanical wiring, and no UI change requires a Playwright snapshot.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the failure conditions. src/api/transform/vscode-lm-format.ts forwards image bytes only when image support is enabled, the source is base64, and the MIME type is one of four allowlisted image types. URL images, unsupported types, and empty decoded data become text placeholders. The change performs no URL fetch, code execution, secret access, or approval bypass. LanguageModelDataPart only stores or encodes caller-provided data.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes in-memory image conversion in src/api/transform/vscode-lm-format.ts and in-memory LanguageModelDataPart construction/serialization in packages/vscode-shim/src/classes/Additional.ts; it adds no file, storage, state, rollback, or write operation.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path can leak resources or duplicate work. The PR adds synchronous LanguageModelDataPart constructors/factories and exports, which allocate only byte arrays. Image conversion performs synchronous base64 decoding and a per-call factory lookup; it adds no listener, watcher, provider, timer, task, cancellation handler, or disposal path. The changed tests only exercise these synchronous paths.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is short but covers the key points. It states what the PR ports and its source, and it lists the placeholder behavior for URLs, empty data, and unsupported formats. It names the skipped items and the validation status. It does not link an approved GitHub issue, which the template requires. It also lacks a Test Procedure section with concrete steps, a Description section on design trade-offs, a Documentation Updates answer, and a Discord contact. It is not written in the template's structure, and the checklist is absent.
Resolution
Add a 'Related GitHub Issue' section with a 'Closes: #' link to an approved issue. Add a 'Description' section that explains the implementation choices, such as the base64 and media-type gating, and the placeholder fallback. Add a 'Test Procedure' section that lists the unit tests added in Additional.test.ts and vscode-lm-format.spec.ts, and state that unit tests were not run. Complete the Pre-Submission Checklist and the 'Documentation Updates' answer. Add the 'Get in Touch' Discord username. Keep the title and sentences in Simplified Technical English as the template asks.
