feat(api): add ensureModelFetched to the six catalog providers - #2191
The PR moves in the direction of making it possible to collect all provider-related stuff into provider class and reduce the number of switch (providerName) across the codebase.
For this, creating a provider instance must be fast. BaseProvider.ensureCatalogLoaded has been added to move catalog fetching out of constructor. This mirrors RouterProvider.ensureModelFetched.

Learning: Regression evidence: Fail only when a concrete changed behavior lacks focused coverage at the lowest valid test layer, tests merely mirror implementation, an affected error/negative/unset branch is omitted, or a durable visible UI change lacks its required Playwright component snapshot. Do not demand tests for unchanged behavior, mechanical configuration, or every branch without a plausible regression scenario. Cite the changed behavior and missing evidence.
Model catalogs for supported providers can be loaded on demand, making fetched model details available afterward.
Concurrent requests share a catalog load, and successfully loaded catalogs are reused.
Improvements
Failed or empty catalog loads can be retried.
Canceling a request stops that caller from waiting without interrupting a load shared with other requests.
Model catalogs are kept separate for different API keys.
OpenRouter endpoint requests now have a time limit.
Six provider handlers now expose ensureModelFetched through shared BaseProvider coordination. Successful catalogs are memoized, while failed or empty required catalogs can be retried. OpenRouter no longer starts catalog loading in its constructor, and its endpoint requests now use the model-catalog timeout.

Summary
Shared catalog-load coordination src/api/providers/base-provider.ts, src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts, src/api/providers/router-provider.ts, related tests
BaseProvider shares concurrent catalog loads and memoizes successful loads. Failed or false-result loads can be retried. An aborted caller can stop waiting without cancelling shared work. Abort utilities support this behavior.
Provider loading hooks and fetch behavior src/api/providers/{lm-studio,native-ollama,openrouter,poe,requesty,unbound}.ts, src/api/providers/fetchers/{modelCache,openrouter}.ts
Six handlers add ensureModelFetched. Requesty includes the API key in model-cache lookups. OpenRouter removes constructor-triggered loading and applies the catalog timeout to endpoint requests.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#1538: Changes Requesty model lookup cancellation and the shared model-cache fetch path, which this PR also uses for Requesty catalog loading.
The inspected catalog-loading paths do not show a new behavior that needs correction before merging. Normal checks remain appropriate.

Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure condition. The new catalog methods call existing provider fetchers, and BaseProvider.ensureCatalogLoaded only coordinates shared waits and abort reasons. The Requesty change passes its configured API key to the Requesty fetcher and includes only a derived cache discriminator, not the raw key, in cache keys and filenames. The OpenRouter timeout change adds no new input execution or secret sink. No changed code executes unvalidated input or bypasses an approval or allowlist control.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. The new provider pre-warm methods await their catalog loads. getModels() still awaits writeModels(), and writeModels() still uses safeWriteJson; OpenRouter endpoint caching also awaits writeModelEndpoints(). The only model-cache implementation change exports the existing timeout constant. Requesty now includes the API key in the cache lookup, which preserves key-specific cache state rather than corrupting it.

Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior regression finding remains unresolved. BaseProvider.ensureCatalogLoaded returns at catalogLoaded before checking signal.aborted (base-provider.ts:182-183), so a pre-aborted caller after a successful load follows an untested branch. base-provider.spec.ts tests pre-abort before loading and memoization separately, but not together. The shared adapter pre-warm tests in model-catalog-adapters.spec.ts have the same gap: they test pre-abort before fetching and successful memoization separately, but never call a memoized handler with an already-aborted signal.
Resolution
Add a focused BaseProvider test that completes a successful load, aborts a controller, and asserts that a second call with that signal rejects with its reason. Add equivalent adapter-level ensureModelFetched coverage. If pre-aborted callers must always reject, check signal.aborted before the catalogLoaded early return.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed pre-warm path can duplicate catalog work after cancellation. BaseProvider.ensureCatalogLoaded() detaches an aborted waiter but deliberately keeps catalogFetch running (base-provider.ts:181-202). Task.safeEnsureModelFetched() aborts that waiter after 5 seconds (Task.ts:5351-5379). Native Ollama starts a separate 15-second getOllamaModels() load for pre-warming (native-ollama.ts:670-679), while createMessage() still calls fetchModel() directly (native-ollama.ts:489-490), which issues another discovery request. A slow Ollama endpoint can therefore receive overlapping catalog requests after the pre-warm waiter times out.
Resolution
Make request-time discovery join the provider's in-flight pre-warm promise, including Native Ollama and OpenRouter, instead of calling fetchModel() independently. Alternatively, cancel the shared pre-warm load when its last waiter aborts. Add a regression test that times out the pre-warm waiter, starts createMessage(), and verifies that only one catalog discovery runs.

The claim that no production caller invokes OpenRouter's ensureModelFetched is incorrect. The runtime path calls it before reading model info, so the concern does not hold as written.

The finding's central premise is contradicted. The comment says no production code calls ensureModelFetched, but the repository has production callers. Task.ts wraps the call in a bounded wait, and generateSystemPrompt.ts awaits it before reading model info. The proposed remedy, wiring in a call or restoring the constructor pre-warm, is therefore unnecessary.

The production request paths already load model metadata.
Task awaits safeEnsureModelFetched() before request construction and streaming. The preview path awaits ensureModelFetched() before reading getModel().info. OpenRouter also fetches metadata inside createMessage() and completePrompt(). The reported missing production caller is not present.

The review comment's premises do not establish a defect introduced by this change.
The first premise is that a synchronous getModel() read before ensureModelFetched() would now see default model info. The one such read in the inspected code, src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts:601-602, builds a fresh handler and reads apiHandler.getModel().info immediately. The comment itself says the constructor no longer starts the background catalog load. A background load cannot have populated this.models before that immediate read, so this path already got openRouterDefaultModelInfo before the change. The PR does not alter that outcome. The ProviderSettingsManager path is also outside the changed files.
The second premise is that callers might not handle the rejection from ensureModelFetched(). The production callers that the search found both catch it:
Task.safeEnsureModelFetched (src/core/task/Task.ts:5352) runs the call inside Promise.race in a try, and its catch logs the error.
The preview path in generateSystemPrompt.ts:67 runs the call inside Promise.race in a try, and its catch logs the error.
ProviderSettingsManager does not call ensureModelFetched(), so it has no rejection path to handle.
Add BaseProvider.ensureCatalogLoaded, a single-flight one-time catalog load
mirroring RouterProvider.ensureModelFetched: concurrent callers share one
fetch, a load that produced models is memoized, a failed load is retried, and
a caller's signal detaches only that caller's wait.
A loader reports whether the catalog it assigned is non-empty, so an empty
response stays retryable. getModels() deliberately does not cache an empty
result, and memoizing it here would pin the handler to the fallback model info
for the rest of its lifetime.
Wire the hook into openrouter, requesty, unbound, poe, lm-studio and
native-ollama, and drop OpenRouter's eager constructor fetch so the catalog
loads on demand instead of at handler construction. The native Ollama path
bypasses modelCache's single-flight, so it bounds its own fetch with the
shared catalog timeout signal.
Extend the shared adapter harness with a pre-warm matrix (memoization,
empty-catalog retry, retry, single flight, pre-aborted caller, mid-flight
waiter detach) plus per-provider regression tests and direct
ensureCatalogLoaded unit tests covering abort-listener cleanup on both
settlement paths.
