Summary

Adds image input support for VS Code Language Model (vscode-lm) models that accept images.

Changes

  • Sends images in user messages and tool results when the selected model and the VS Code host support image input. Models without image support keep the existing text fallback.
  • Detects image support from the live model list, so the UI and runtime use what the model reports rather than a static catalog. Unknown or ambiguous model selections are treated as not supporting images. Empty discovery results and errors clear old capability data.
  • Counts image tokens with the host's token counter and checks the measured input against the live and curated input limits.
  • Keeps existing Copilot behavior, text-only handling, context-window behavior, and the VS Code 1.100 minimum.
  • Adds focused provider and UI-hook tests. No dependency changes.

Validation

  • CI: all checks passed on 72eff1c (unit tests on Ubuntu and Windows, compile, e2e-mock, visual, knip, translations, CodeQL, Codecov patch). CodeRabbit approved. mutation-diff was still running when this description was updated.
  • Local: formatting and whitespace checks passed. Tests, lint, and type checks were not run locally because dependencies were unavailable; CI covered them.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • VS Code language models now report image support based on host-provided capabilities, including for models not already listed in the app.
    • Image inputs are forwarded to supported models and included in token and context-window checks using host-side image accounting.
    • Models without image support continue to use text-only token counting.
    • Model selection uses host-reported capabilities when there is a unique match; ambiguous or unavailable matches leave image support unspecified.

The VS Code LM provider now reports host model image capabilities and uses image-aware token counting for supported models. The webview retrieves host model data and uses a unique selector match to determine the selected model’s image support.

Changes: VS Code LM image support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Model capability metadata
src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts
Live model metadata includes host-reported image support. Model listings return identifying fields and model metadata instead of raw host model objects.
Image input and token counting
src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/vscode-lm.spec.ts
Image-capable models pass image-bearing messages to host token counting and receive checks against the smaller context window. Other models retain text-based counting. Tests cover image forwarding, fallback behavior, and context-window limits.
Webview model retrieval and selection
webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/useVsCodeLmModels.ts, webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/useSelectedModel.ts, webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/__tests__/*
The webview requests VS Code LM model data and applies host-reported image support when exactly one model matches the selector. Tests cover message handling, hook lifecycle, and selection matching.

Title check Passed The title clearly and concisely describes the main change: adding runtime image input support for VS Code LM.
Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

Focused regression coverage is present. vscode-lm.spec.ts covers host capability states, message and tool-result image forwarding/fallback, native image token counting, both context-window limits, pre-selection, and missing host image-part support. The UI hook specs cover empty, error, unrelated, disabled, cleanup, unmatched, ambiguous, and uniquely matched model reports. No component markup or durable visual layout changed, so no new Playwright component snapshot is required.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security failure condition. getVsCodeLmModels() still excludes the existing static blacklist and now sends only selected model fields plus computed capability data, not raw host model objects (src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts:1598-1611). Image forwarding is gated by the host-reported boolean capability and image-part support (src/api/providers/vscode-lm-capabilities.ts:26-37,70-90; src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts:887-931), while requests still use VS Code sendRequest with its user approval justification (src/api/providers/vscode-lm.ts:1328-1334). The new webview message handler stores model metadata only; it does not execute message data or control provider authorization (useVsCodeLmModels.ts:17-31).

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. The new VS Code LM model state is held in the in-memory React Query cache via synchronous setQueryData calls in useVsCodeLmModels.ts; it is not written to persistent storage. The extension awaits getVsCodeLmModels() and awaits postMessageToWebview. Discovery errors and empty model lists explicitly replace the cached list with [], and useSelectedModel consumes the reported metadata. No non-atomic write, missing await, rollback gap, or unpropagated persisted default is introduced.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The new lifecycle path duplicates listeners and discovery work. useSelectedModel now calls useVsCodeLmModels at webview-ui/src/components/ui/hooks/useSelectedModel.ts:122, and that hook adds a message listener and posts requestVsCodeLmModels on every enabled mount (useVsCodeLmModels.ts:15-33). useSelectedModel is used by both ChatView.tsx:902 and the nested ModelSelector.tsx:96, with additional uses in TaskHeader and each ChatRow. With vscodeLm active, these consumers create multiple listeners and host discovery requests. Switching providers or remounting the chat repeats the requests. Each individual listener has cleanup, but the shared lifecycle still performs duplicate work.

Resolution

Provide one shared VS Code LM model-listener/request owner per QueryClient or application lifecycle. Hoist useVsCodeLmModels above the multiple useSelectedModel consumers, or add reference-counted singleton ownership. Register one listener and one discovery request, remove the listener when the final consumer unmounts or disables the hook, and ensure provider switches or remounts do not issue concurrent duplicate requests.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The PR description follows the repository template structure in part. It has a Summary, a Changes list, and a Validation section, which together describe the image input feature and its test status. It does not use the template headings. It has no 'Related GitHub Issue' section and no 'Closes: #' link, and the 'Pre-Submission Checklist' is missing. The 'Test Procedure' is not written as reviewer steps, and it reports that tests, lint, and type checks were not run locally. The 'Description' section does not explain the implementation trade-offs. Documentation Updates, Visual Snapshots, and Get in Touch are absent. The description says the 'Visual' CI check passed, but it does not state whether a *.visual.tsx snapshot was added for the UI hook change, which the template asks for when a user can notice the change. The body also leaves out the Simplified Technical English style that the template asks for, and it contains contractions and some non-ASD phrasing.

Resolution

Rewrite the description to follow the repository template. Add a 'Related GitHub Issue' section with a 'Closes: #<number>' line that links to an approved issue. Add a 'Description' section that explains the implementation choices, such as using the live model list for capability detection, treating ambiguous selectors as unsupported, and counting image tokens with the host counter. Add a 'Test Procedure' section with the exact commands or manual steps reviewers can repeat. Complete the Pre-Submission Checklist. State whether a *.visual.tsx snapshot was added or why none is needed for the UI hook change. Add a 'Documentation Updates' answer and a 'Get in Touch' Discord username. Rewrite the text in Simplified Technical English with short, active sentences and no contractions.

Thanks for contributing. This comment tracks the review sequence and the next action.

Current step: Awaiting fresh human maintainer or CODEOWNER approval.

Automated review is complete for the latest commit but does not replace human approval.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.
