This PR adds the coding-task evaluation framework from issue #2084. It builds on the agent-evals substrate from PR #1909. The framework grades real Zoo runs, repeats them, and compares two commits in one self-contained report.
Frozen fixtures. The suite coding-basic-v1 ships five frozen coding fixtures: clamp-range, slugify-text, parse-csv-line, format-bytes, and deep-get. Each fixture has one prompt, a known-good workspace, a tool policy, execution limits, hidden acceptance tests, and two reference solutions. One solution is correct. One is plausible but wrong. Each grader passes the correct solution and fails the incorrect one.
Isolation and digests. Each fixture has an immutable initial-state digest. Each run builds its workspace from that state in a fresh directory. Runs cannot inherit changes from other runs. The suite digest pins the fixture content, hidden tests, reference solutions, and grader version. Any edit changes the digest and marks a cross-commit comparison incompatible.
Container grading. After the agent stops, the grader copies the final workspace to a fresh directory and adds the hidden tests. It runs them in a disposable container with CPU, memory, and time limits. The runtime detects Docker or Podman. The grader has no provider credential and no network access. A grader that hangs, crashes, or exceeds its limits reports grading failure. It never reports incorrect.
Outcomes. Each run reports one of five outcomes: correct, incorrect, timed out, grading failure, or infrastructure failure. Infrastructure failures stay separate from incorrect results.
Paired comparisons.pnpm coding-evals:compare runs the same fixtures on a baseline commit and a candidate commit with pinned inputs. The default is three repetitions per fixture per commit. Pinned inputs cover the commit SHAs, the suite digest, the settings digest, the model identifier, the grader version, and the runner environment. A pinned difference marks the pair as incompatible in the report. pnpm coding-evals:side runs one side.
Metrics and reports. Per-run metrics cover input, output, and cached tokens, tool calls, tool failures, duration, stop reason, outcome, and estimated cost where the price table allows it. Missing values stay missing. Unsupported telemetry is reported as unavailable. The framework writes a JSON report and a self-contained Markdown report with paired differences and uncertainty. It makes no statistical significance claim.
Test Procedure
Run pnpm test:agent-evals:unit. All 128 tests pass offline. The suite uses node:test and needs no VS Code, no provider credential, and no container runtime.
Run pnpm agent-evals:check-types. The check passes with no errors.
Grader unit tests cover the correct and incorrect reference solutions, grader timeouts, and grader crashes.
Not run: the live acceptance check on a deliberately broken commit. This check remains unrun. It needs VS Code, provider credentials, and Docker or Podman. Reviewers with that setup can run pnpm coding-evals:compare against a broken candidate commit to complete it.

Additional Notes
The price table contains no rates. Placeholder rates were removed. Cost estimates stay unavailable until a maintainer records real rates under a new table identifier.
Added coding evaluations with five programming tasks, repeated runs, and automated grading of final workspace states.
Added paired comparisons between approved commits, with reports covering task outcomes, success rates, and available timing and cost metrics.
Reports show whether evaluation inputs are compatible and clearly identify unavailable measurements.
Added commands for running evaluations and comparing approved commits.
Documentation
Added guidance for running evaluations and comparisons, including commit approval requirements, grading isolation, and evaluation limitations.
This change adds a coding-task evaluation framework. It defines five fixtures, captures and grades final workspaces, records run metrics, and compares repeated runs from two approved commits in JSON and Markdown reports.

The evaluation tooling is mostly sound. A terminal interrupt that lands at one narrow moment can leave a side process running with the provider credential until its time limit. The grader image identity can also be reported stale in an unusual failure case. Neither affects production behavior, so this is mergeable with owner awareness.

Explanation
The description covers the linked issue, implementation, testing, checklist, documentation, and known limitation that live acceptance testing was not run. Some optional checklist items and the contact field remain incomplete, but the description is mostly complete and relevant.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #2084. Fixture, workspace, grader, container, metrics, comparison, reporting, trust, and test changes implement the requested evaluation framework. Runner workspace capture and process-interruption changes support reliable evaluation runs. The summary shows no release workflow, hard release gate, model-based judging, or arbitrary repository cloning change.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The prior non-atomic grader-result path is addressed. scripts/agent-evals/grader-driver.mjs:18-40 writes to a unique same-directory temporary file, renames it to the result path, and removes the temporary file on failure. The changed comparison and side publication paths await atomic writes; comparison publication removes the completion marker first and rolls back all report files on failure. No changed persistence path now meets the failure condition. Prior failure addressed: Current grader-driver.mjs lines 18-40 use a unique temp file, atomic rename, and failure cleanup. The comparison and side result paths also use awaited atomic writers with explicit incomplete-publication handling.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2084 requires a run on a deliberately broken commit that fails at least one grader. The current PR description states that this live acceptance check remains unrun. The reported unit tests cover graders, metrics, reports, isolation, and outcome handling, but they do not establish this live requirement. The implementation summary covers the other requested coding requirements, including five fixtures, fresh workspaces, hidden container grading, distinct outcomes, pinned comparisons, three repetitions, reports, incomplete-accounting handling, cost-per-successful-task availability, and unsupported telemetry.
Resolution
Run pnpm coding-evals:compare with a deliberately broken candidate commit. Record that at least one grader fails and that the result is classified as incorrect, not grading failure or infrastructure failure.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The new side trust gate approves only HEAD and does not verify that the evaluated tree is clean or matches that commit. coding-side.mts:95-97 resolves and approves HEAD, then coding-side.mts:169-170 passes the caller-selected evaluatedRoot to createHostRuntime; launcher.ts:109-110 loads the extension directly from that tree. An operator can approve commit A, modify its tracked extension files while leaving HEAD at A, and run the side with the provider credential. The modified code then executes despite not being approved. The comparison worktree is clean, but the standalone live side remains vulnerable.
Resolution
Before starting the host, verify that evaluatedRoot is a repository with no tracked or untracked changes and that its resolved tree matches the approved commit. Alternatively, create a fresh detached worktree from the approved SHA and run only that tree. Add an integration test that modifies an approved checkout and asserts the side rejects it before host launch or result publication.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused regression coverage is still incomplete. The changed createHostRuntime adds readFinalWorkspace and the production walker in launcher.ts:56-99,240-243, including the pre-launch error, nested paths, .git/node_modules exclusion, file and total-byte limits, oversized-file handling, and truncated. launcher.test.ts never calls readFinalWorkspace; coding-run.test.ts uses synthetic runtime implementations instead. The new grader-driver.test.ts only covers one passing run and rename-failure cleanup. It does not invoke grader-driver.mjs for no tests, unsupported names/extensions, child runner errors, missing TAP summaries, the 50-failure-name cap, or the missing output-path argument. Parser and runtime tests do not cover these driver behaviors.
Resolution
Add focused lowest-layer tests for createHostRuntime().readFinalWorkspace() covering the pre-workspace error, nested relative paths, skipped directories, oversized files, total-size and file-count limits, and truncated. Add subprocess tests that invoke grader-driver.mjs for normal pass/fail results, no discovered tests, unsupported files, child runner errors, missing TAP summaries, the 50-name limit, and the missing output-path exit. Keep the existing parser and runtime mapping tests.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The prior lifecycle leak remains. grader-driver.mjs spawns each test file at lines 82-87 without detached, process-group tracking, or cancellation handling. createLocalSubprocessGradingRuntime applies timeout and SIGKILL only to the outer driver at coding-grader.ts lines 124-130. If a test file starts a timer or child process, the outer driver dies at timeout while that test process can continue. runGrader then removes the grading copy at lines 99-100 without stopping the surviving process. The timeout test only uses a timer in the outer driver (coding-grader.test.ts lines 164-183), so it does not cover this path.
Resolution
Add cancellation handling to grader-driver.mjs and the local grading runtime. Run each test child in a dedicated process group where supported. Track the active child, terminate the group on timeout or cancellation, escalate from SIGTERM to SIGKILL, wait for process-group exit, and only then remove grading output and the grading copy. Add a regression test where a test file starts a persistent timer or descendant process and verify no process remains after timeout.

146-146: 🎯 Functional Correctness
The comment is refuted. coding-side.mts defaults a missing CODING_EVALS_SIDE value to "baseline" and always writes side-results.json. The environment variable is only set by paired comparisons to record the baseline or candidate label.

68-69: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration
No shifted pairs occur in the supported side-output path.
scripts/agent-evals/coding-side.mts iterates over every requested repIndex and pushes either the successful record or an infrastructure-failure record. It writes side-results.json only after all repetitions complete. An interruption before that write does not produce a partial side result for the report to pair.
The report accepts arbitrary synthetic SideResult values, but that does not establish a defect in the supported coding-evaluation workflow.
Treat truncated workspace captures as infrastructure failures.
readWorkspaceFiles returns partial files after a capture limit is reached. runCodingFixtureOnce still grades those files. If the capture omits a required solution file, the hidden tests can fail and classify the correct agent result as incorrect. Skip grading when snapshot.truncated is true and classify the run as infrastructure-failure.

An interrupt of the driver leaves the detached side process running.
detached: true puts the side process in its own process group. A terminal SIGINT goes only to the foreground group, so the side process does not receive it. The driver has no SIGINT or SIGTERM handler. Node exits at once, and the finally cleanup never runs. The side process keeps running with the provider credential. It spends credits until its wall clock expires, and the default is 120 minutes. The worktrees and the scratch directory also stay on disk.
Register signal handlers before the spawn. The handlers must kill the child process group with the same SIGTERM then SIGKILL sequence used for the timeout. Then they must run the cleanup and exit.

Register SIGINT and SIGTERM handlers before spawning the detached child process,
and have them terminate its process group with the existing timeout cleanup’s
SIGTERM-then-SIGKILL sequence. Then run the driver’s cleanup and exit so
interrupted runs do not leave the child or temporary resources behind.

Not fixed at remote head 266c01f. coding-compare.mts has no SIGINT or SIGTERM handler. Only the wall-clock timeout kills the detached side process group (coding-compare.mts:124-137). Remaining limit: a terminal interrupt of the driver still leaves the side process running with the credential until its window expires, and the worktrees and scratch directory stay on disk.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@edelauna The finding remains unresolved at 266c01f, based on your inspection. The timeout path does not handle driver interruption.
The fix must handle SIGINT and SIGTERM, terminate the detached process group with bounded SIGTERM → SIGKILL escalation, and complete worktree and scratch-directory cleanup before exit.
One correction to my original comment: the driver owns the side timeout. If the driver exits, that timeout cannot enforce the 120-minute limit.
The driver registers SIGINT and SIGTERM handlers before any spawn (coding-compare.mts:67-68). Every child runs detached in its own process group under one shared guard (side-process-guard.ts). On a signal the guard sends SIGTERM to the tracked group, waits a bounded 30 second grace, then sends SIGKILL (coding-compare.mts:51). Preparation children use the same guard (coding-compare.ts:62-109), and an interrupt before a spawn refuses to start (coding-compare.ts:70). The cleanup awaits the escalation before it removes the worktrees (coding-compare.mts:242-254), so no child writes into a deleted tree.
Test evidence at this head: side-process-guard.test.ts covers group termination on SIGTERM, SIGKILL escalation when a child ignores SIGTERM, one escalation across repeated signals, an escalation that survives a tracked child exit, a preparation group stopped when only the parent gets SIGTERM, and a refused spawn after the interrupt.
Remaining gap: an interrupt aborts the run through a thrown error, so that path exits 1. The conventional 130/143 exits are wired (coding-compare.mts:258-259) but the error path shadows them.

@edelauna I inspected 6ef96b4b. The fix handles interruption while a child is tracked, but one interrupt window remains.
In scripts/agent-evals/coding-compare.mts:
Line 150 checks isInterrupted().
Line 152 awaits fs.mkdir().
Line 154 spawns the side without another interrupt check.
If a signal arrives during that await, the guard has no tracked child. Its interrupt() call returns "none" and marks the guard interrupted. The driver then spawns the side. track() does not reject or terminate this new child, and subsequent signals return early. The side can therefore run until its timeout despite the interrupt.
Add an interrupt check immediately after fs.mkdir() and before the synchronous spawn. Add a regression test for interruption during that asynchronous gap. This finding remains open for that path.
Your exit-code observation is also correct: a thrown error propagates after finally and bypasses Lines 258–259. Handle interrupted errors at the outer boundary so cleanup completes before exit 130 or 143, while other errors remain failures.
I inspected the test source but did not execute repository code.

Re-verified against the current remote head fa994e7 (fa994e7). Both residual items from the last analysis remain open at this head. This reply records the state. It makes no code change.
mkdir to spawn window: runSide checks isInterrupted() at coding-compare.mts:154, awaits fs.mkdir at coding-compare.mts:156, and spawns the side at coding-compare.mts:158 with no check between. A signal during the mkdir await resolves sideGuard.interrupt() as "none" and arms the guard. The side spawned afterwards is tracked but never terminated by the guard, because later interrupts return early. Only the side wall clock bounds that child.
Exit code: an interrupt throw still propagates after the finally cleanup. The 130 and 143 exits at coding-compare.mts:261-262 run only on the non-throwing path, so an interrupted run exits 1. Cleanup itself completes before exit.
No regression test covers a signal during the mkdir to spawn gap. coding-compare-script.test.ts covers only the --allow-unisolated-grading gate. runBoundedPreparation refuses a preparation spawn after an interrupt (coding-compare.ts:70) and that path has tests, but the side spawn gap does not. Both items stay open for a future change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@edelauna Acknowledged. Based on your re-verification at fa994e7279c, both items remain unresolved:
The fs.mkdir() → side-spawn gap permits a child to start after interruption.
The interrupt error path completes cleanup but exits 1 instead of 130 or 143.
The missing regression test for the side-spawn gap also remains outstanding. This status update does not establish a fix.
Would you like me to open a GitHub follow-up issue for both items and their regression tests?

134-152: Add a test for the 0o777 output-directory mode.
No test checks that outDir is world-writable before the container starts. The fs.chmod(outDir, 0o777) call in container-runtime.ts is the only guard against --cap-drop ALL blocking /out/result.json. A regression there fails only under a real engine.
In the run stub, call fs.stat(outDirFromArgs(args)) and assert (mode & 0o777) === 0o777.
This repeats the earlier review point on container-runtime.ts that asked for a permission regression test.

Add an accept-path test for the --allow-unisolated-grading gate in coding-compare.mts.
This file tests only the reject path. A change that makes the gate reject every invocation would still pass. The same file has no case that shows a normal invocation gets past the argument gate. coding-side.test.ts does not have this gap: its other cases reach the commit-approval and credential gates.
Add one case that omits the flag. Set SOLHEIM_API_KEY so the credential check passes. Use the empty-policy file. The run must fail later, at the trust policy, and must not print the flag rejection message.

Log the swallowed wiring error so operators can diagnose it.
The bare catch discards the thrown error. The run becomes an infrastructure-failure record with the fixed reason runTraceMissing. If the wiring fails the same way on every repetition (for example, a host launch failure), the side still publishes side-results.json and exits 0. That file holds only identical infrastructure failures, and nothing records why.
Write a short diagnostic to stderr. Log only the error name and message, not the error object or any environment values.

# docker image pull
Description | Download an image from a registry
Usage | `docker image pull [OPTIONS] NAME[:TAG|@DIGEST]`
Aliases An alias is a short or memorable alternative for a longer command. | `docker pull`
## Description
Most of your images will be created on top of a base image from the Docker Hub registry.
Docker Hub contains many pre-built images that you can `pull` and try without needing to define and configure your own.
To download a particular image, or set of images (i.e., a repository), use `docker pull`.
### Proxy configuration
If you are behind an HTTP proxy server, for example in corporate settings, you may have to configure the Docker daemon to use the proxy server for operations such as pulling and pushing images. Refer to the dockerd command-line reference for details.
### Concurrent downloads
By default the Docker daemon downloads three layers of an image at a time. If you are on a low bandwidth connection this may cause timeout issues and you may want to lower this via the `--max-concurrent-downloads` daemon option. See the daemon documentation for more details.
## Options
Option | Default | Description
--- | --- | ---
`-a, --all-tags` | | Download all tagged images in the repository
`--platform` | | API 1.32+ Set platform if server is multi-platform capable
`-q, --quiet` | | Suppress verbose output
## Examples
### Pull an image from Docker Hub
To download a particular image, or set of images (i.e., a repository), use `docker image pull` (or the `docker pull` shorthand). If no tag is provided, Docker Engine uses the `:latest` tag as a default. This example pulls the `debian:latest` image:
`$ docker image pull debian
Using default tag: latest
latest: Pulling from library/debian
e756f3fdd6a3: Pull complete
Digest: sha256:3f1d6c17773a45c97bd8f158d665c9709d7b29ed7917ac934086ad96f92e4510
Status: Downloaded newer image for debian:latest
docker.io/library/debian:latest
`
Docker images can consist of multiple layers. In the example above, the image consists of a single layer; `e756f3fdd6a3`.
Layers can be reused by images. For example, the `debian:bookworm` image shares its layer with the `debian:latest`. Pulling the `debian:bookworm` image therefore only pulls its metadata, but not its layers, because the layer is already present locally:
`$ docker image pull debian:bookworm
bookworm: Pulling from library/debian
Digest: sha256:3f1d6c17773a45c97bd8f158d665c9709d7b29ed7917ac934086ad96f92e4510
Status: Downloaded newer image for debian:bookworm
docker.io/library/debian:bookworm
`
To see which images are present locally, use the `docker images` command:
`$ docker images
REPOSITORY TAG IMAGE ID CREATED SIZE
debian bookworm 4eacea30377a 8 days ago 124MB
debian latest 4eacea30377a 8 days ago 124MB
`
Docker uses a content-addressable image store, and the image ID is a SHA256 digest covering the image's configuration and layers. In the example above, `debian:bookworm` and `debian:latest` have the same image ID because they are the same image tagged with different names. Because they are the same image, their layers are stored only once and do not consume extra disk space.
For more information about images, layers, and the content-addressable store, refer to understand images, containers, and storage drivers.
### Pull an image by digest (immutable identifier)
So far, you've pulled images by their name (and "tag"). Using names and tags is a convenient way to work with images. When using tags, you can `docker pull` an image again to make sure you have the most up-to-date version of that image. For example, `docker pull ubuntu:2…[truncated]</excerpt>

Do not retain an image digest across runs when the current identity is unavailable.
The retention is intentional, but it can report an old digest if a later pull refreshes node:22-bookworm and the current inspections return undefined. coding-side.mts records that value as graderImageDigest, so the comparison can miss different grader image contents. The same runtime and tag make this a narrow conditional pinning-integrity issue, not a major issue.
Clear the cached value at the start of each run and record only the current lookup result. Update the retention test accordingly.

Review comment at @scripts/agent-evals/container-runtime.ts at line 236:
Update the container runtime’s run method to clear resolvedDigest at the start
of each run and record only the current lookup result instead of retaining an
earlier digest when the lookup returns undefined. Update the retention test to
verify that an unavailable current identity does not report a digest from a
previous run.

Closes: #2084
Description
This PR adds the coding-task evaluation framework from issue #2084. It builds on the agent-evals substrate from PR #1909. The framework grades real Zoo runs, repeats them, and compares two commits in one self-contained report.
Frozen fixtures. The suite
coding-basic-v1ships five frozen coding fixtures:clamp-range,slugify-text,parse-csv-line,format-bytes, anddeep-get. Each fixture has one prompt, a known-good workspace, a tool policy, execution limits, hidden acceptance tests, and two reference solutions. One solution is correct. One is plausible but wrong. Each grader passes the correct solution and fails the incorrect one.Isolation and digests.
A grader that hangs, crashes, or exceeds its limits reports
grading failure. It never reportsincorrect.Outcomes. Each run reports one of five outcomes:
correct, incorrect, timed out, grading failure, orinfrastructure failure. Infrastructure failures stay separate from incorrect results.Paired comparisons.
pnpm coding-evals:compareruns the same fixtures on a baseline commit and a candidate commit with pinned inputs. The default is three repetitions per fixture per commit. Pinned inputs cover the commit SHAs, the suite digest, the settings digest, the model identifier, the grader version, and the runner environment. A pinned difference marks the pair as incompatible in the report.pnpm coding-evals:sideruns one side.Metrics and reports.
Test Procedure
pnpm test:agent-evals:unit. All 128 tests pass offline. The suite usesnode:testand needs no VS Code, no provider credential, and no container runtime.pnpm agent-evals:check-types. The check passes with no errors. Not run: the live acceptance check on a deliberately broken commit. This check remains unrun. It needs VS Code, provider credentials, and Docker or Podman. Reviewers with that setup can run
pnpm coding-evals:compareagainst a broken candidate commit to complete it.Pre-Submission Checklist
