Fixes #2062

Problem

Each streamed delta of a partial say/ask (text, reasoning, attempt_completion's result, ...) posted the entire message to the webview (messageUpdated). Providers that stream small chunks therefore caused dozens of full re-renders per second (331 deltas in 10.5 s in the report), and partial markdown (half a table, an open code fence) changed the layout on almost every update.

Change

Task now routes partial updates through postPartialMessageUpdate: the in-memory message is still updated on every delta, but the webview post happens at most once per 120 ms (leading edge, plus one trailing post so the latest text always arrives). The queued post is cancelled when the message is finalized (partial: false) and when the task is disposed; finalization still posts and persists as before.

Notes

  • The RooCodeEventName.Message "updated" event shares this path, so API/CLI consumers also see fewer partial updates; the final version is always emitted.
  • Not included: rendering only up to the last complete line in the webview (also suggested in the issue). This change is extension-side only.

Tests

New partial message update throttling tests (fake timers): a 50-delta burst coalesces into fewer than 10 posts and ends with the latest text; finalizing cancels the queued post and delivers the final text; updates far apart post immediately. src suite (11,031 tests) and check-types pass.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Reduced the frequency of intermediate webview refreshes during streaming ask/say messages.
    • Kept the latest partial message available for display after throttling.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Prevented queued partial updates from appearing after a message is finalized or a task is closed, aborted, or abandoned.
    • Improved handling of failed updates without causing unhandled errors.
    • Posted updates individually when they are spaced apart.

Task limits partial ask and say webview updates to one post per 120 ms, retaining the latest update for a trailing post. It cancels pending updates when messages are finalized or the task is disposed. Tests cover coalescing, delivery timing, and cancellation.

Changes: Partial message updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Throttle partial message posts
src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts
Task throttles repeated partial ask and say updates. It posts immediately when the interval allows and otherwise schedules a trailing update with the latest message. Tests cover bursts of updates and delivery after sufficient elapsed time.
Cancel pending updates on finalization and disposal
src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts
Task cancels queued partial updates before publishing finalized ask or say messages and during disposal. Tests verify that finalization and disposal cancel queued updates.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description links issue #2062, explains the problem and implementation, identifies an intentional scope limit, and documents tests and reported results. It does not reproduce the full template checklist, but the required change and test information are complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2062 requests fewer updates while partial responses stream. Task.ts now routes existing partial ask and say messages through postPartialMessageUpdate, which coalesces updates into a 120 ms window and sends a trailing latest update. Finalization cancels the queued partial update, then posts and saves the final message. Task disposal also cancels queued updates. Task.spec.ts covers burst coalescing, latest-text delivery, finalization, ask finalization, disposal, and spaced updates. The issue's last-complete-line suggestion is optional and is explicitly outside this change.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files are src/core/task/Task.ts and its focused Task.spec.ts tests. The implementation reduces partial message posts and preserves final delivery. The tests validate that behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security failure conditions. In src/core/task/Task.ts, the PR only throttles existing partial ask/say calls before the unchanged updateClineMessage webview/event path. Approval evaluation still runs through checkAutoApproval before partial ask updates, and finalization still uses the existing complete-message path. The new timer stores an internal ClineMessage, cancels on finalization and disposal, and does not execute input, add a data destination, or alter allowlist controls.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. Existing partial-message updates still only call postPartialMessageUpdate and updateClineMessage; they do not add or alter disk writes. In both changed finalization paths, cancelPendingPartialMessageUpdate() is followed by await this.saveClineMessages() before the final update post. The save implementation still awaits saveTaskMessages with a cloned message snapshot. The PR adds no unawaited persistence operation, non-atomic write, missing rollback, or missing persisted-default propagation.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle leak or post-cancellation duplicate path is present. The new throttle owns one pending timeout and one message reference. The timeout clears both fields before it runs and posts only when the message remains partial and the task is neither aborted nor abandoned (Task.ts:1771-1778). Say/ask finalization cancels the timeout (2039, 2866), and disposal cancels it synchronously (3666-3669). Direct tool-ask finalization also changes partial to false before any queued callback can post (2965-2968), so the callback self-clears without work.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The PR adds focused Task tests for say() bursts, trailing latest-text delivery, ask finalization, disposal, and spaced updates. It does not cover the new negative lifecycle guard at Task.ts:1776: a queued trailing update must be suppressed when abort or abandoned becomes true. The disposal test clears the timer before it runs, so it cannot detect a post after abort or abandon. No Playwright snapshot is required because the PR changes extension-side update cadence, not a webview component.

Resolution

Add fake-timer Task tests that queue a partial update, call requestAbort(false) and requestAbandon() in separate cases, advance the timer, and assert that no trailing messageUpdated event is emitted.

Capture message values when each post occurs.

Task.say mutates the same ClineMessage object for later deltas and finalization. The mock stores that object by reference, so the current assertions can pass even when an earlier post had different values. Capture ts, text, and partial in the mock implementation at invocation time, then assert against those snapshots.

Add required coverage for ask finalization and disposal.

The test-file instruction requires regression coverage for relevant boundary and cleanup cases. The current suite covers queued-update cancellation only through say() finalization. Add fake-timer tests for a queued partial ask() update followed by finalization and for a queued partial update followed by task.dispose(). Advance the timers and assert that no late partial update is posted.

Every streamed delta of a partial say/ask posted the whole message to the
webview, so long markdown responses reflowed dozens of times per second.
Post partial updates at most every 120ms with a trailing post for the latest
text, and cancel the queued post when the message is finalized or the task
is disposed.

Assert both sides of the 120 ms boundary.

The burst test checks only the post count and final text after timers drain. The 1,000 ms test covers only widely separated updates. Neither test proves that an update remains queued at 119 ms and that the latest snapshot posts at 120 ms. Add a focused fake-timer assertion for these boundary cases.

Add a focused fake-timer test near the existing burst test in Task.spec.ts that
verifies an update remains queued at 119 ms and the latest snapshot posts at 120
ms. Assert both boundary states while preserving the existing burst and widely
separated update coverage.

Preserve queued updates for distinct messages.

If a partial say("reasoning") update is queued and a new partial say("text") message starts, the text message's next update can replace the queued reasoning update. updateClineMessage then emits no RooCodeEventName.Message update for that reasoning value. Flush the pending update when the message timestamp changes, or track pending updates by message identity. As per path instructions, “Verify extension/webview contracts” and “Trace changed inputs through normal, boundary, error, cancellation, retry, and default paths.”

Review comment at @src/core/task/Task.ts at line 1766:
Update Task’s pending partial-message handling so an update for a distinct
message cannot overwrite an earlier queued update; flush the pending update when
the message timestamp changes, or track pending updates by message identity.
Preserve emission of each queued value through updateClineMessage.
