No approved, assigned Zoo Code issue covers this change yet, so this PR does not include a Closes: line. Per CONTRIBUTING.md, a maintainer must confirm an assigned issue before this can merge. Related but not equivalent: #985 (open, bug, unassigned).

Summary

Port simurg79/Roo-Code#15, authored by Bertan Ari in upstream commit d9d96e47006786acbb05d6ef0ee7a927f91f8f12.

  • Report failed diff blocks together instead of overwriting every error except the last. Bound output to five detailed failures (4000 characters each), then one-line summaries (200 characters each), with at most 50 reported failures and a remainder count.
  • Diagnose likely mistyped start-line markers only after matching fails; marker-like file content remains valid.
  • Explain partial success as Applied X of Y diff blocks (parser-provided blockCount) and ask for only failed blocks to be resent.
  • Security: failure diagnostics no longer contain file or search text. The strategy no longer emits Search Content, Best Match Found or Original Content sections; it reports similarity, threshold, Levenshtein distance, lengths, best-match line location and constant tips. ApplyDiffTool never forwards DiffResult.details, on single, multi-block, partial-success and fallback paths, so neither the model result nor the diff_error UI message can contain them.

Test Procedure

  • pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/diff core/tools: 34 files, 781 passed, 5 skipped.
  • New regression tests run the real strategy with synthetic markers in file, search and details fields and assert they are absent from the tool result, diff_error message and recorded tool error for single, multiple, partial-success and fallback cases.
  • Pre-push hook: full turbo lint and turbo check-types passed; Prettier applied. No ESLint suppression changes.
  • Environment: Node 24.15.0 (repo requests 22.23.1); Vitest from the repository toolchain via pnpm exec. CI remains authoritative.

Known upstream limitations

The SEARCH-marker regex count is advisory. Diff block N of M labels enumerate failed entries, not original request positions.

Pre-Submission Checklist

  • Issue Linked: blocked on maintainer-assigned issue (see above).
  • Scope: focused on apply_diff failure reporting.
  • Self-Review: done.
  • Testing: regression tests added.
  • Documentation Impact: none required.

No changesets or changelog entries. Implementation, testing and review were AI-assisted.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Diff failures now include a targeted hint when a malformed start-line marker may have been treated as search text. Valid markers and ordinary failed searches avoid this hint.
    • Failure reports combine multiple unsuccessful changes and show best-match locations without exposing file or search text. Long error messages and failure lists are shortened, with notices when details are omitted.
    • Partial-application reports provide more accurate applied and failed block counts, clarify which changes were not applied, and guide retries to include only still-needed failed blocks.

The diff strategy now reports best-match locations and lengths without including file or search text. It adds hints for likely malformed start-line markers. ApplyDiffTool combines and limits failure output and reports estimated applied blocks with retry guidance.

Changes: Diff failure diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Diff strategy diagnostics
src/core/diff/strategies/multi-search-replace.ts, src/core/diff/strategies/__tests__/multi-search-replace*.spec.ts, apps/vscode-e2e/src/fixtures/apply-diff.ts
No-match errors report best-match locations and lengths without including file or search text. The strategy adds hints for likely malformed start-line markers after matching fails. Tests cover marker forms, matching behavior, diagnostic content, and content omission.
ApplyDiffTool failure reporting
src/shared/tools.ts, src/core/tools/ApplyDiffTool.ts, src/core/tools/__tests__/applyDiffTool.failureReporting.spec.ts
ApplyDiffTool combines failed parts and limits detailed and abbreviated output. It omits detail fields and reports estimated applied and failed block counts with retry guidance. Successful DiffResult values can include an optional blockCount. Tests cover failure output, truncation, content omission, and partial application.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security failure conditions. MultiSearchReplaceDiffStrategy now reports only numeric metrics, line locations, and constant guidance after a failed match; it does not echo file or SEARCH text. ApplyDiffTool omits DiffResult.details and forwards only bounded strategy errors. Access validation remains before file access, and both save paths still require askApproval before writing. The new block count is used only for reporting.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The changed apply_diff path does not introduce a persistence-integrity failure. It still awaits saveDirectly(...) and saveChanges(...); the pull request changes diagnostics, partial-apply accounting, and DiffResult.blockCount, not the write or rollback mechanism.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path can leak a resource or duplicate work. The PR changes diagnostic formatting, malformed-marker detection, failure counting, and the optional DiffResult.blockCount. ApplyDiffTool retains its existing approval, diff-view, save, reset, and queued-message flow; the added code only formats strings and filters failure parts. The complete diff adds no listener, watcher, subscription, timer, task, cancellation, disposal, or restart logic.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the implementation, testing, security impact, and known limitations. However, it does not provide the required approved issue link or a valid Closes line, and the issue-linked checklist item remains incomplete.

Resolution

Link this PR to an approved, assigned GitHub issue and replace the current issue explanation with a valid Closes: #<issue-number> entry. Mark the Issue Linked checklist item as complete after linking it.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The standing failure remains. ApplyDiffTool now formats bounded multi-block and truncated diagnostics and sends them as diff_error chat text. ChatRow renders that durable message through the expandable ErrorRow path. The reviewed diff adds core Vitest coverage for formatting and tool output, but it adds no webview-ui Playwright component visual test or committed snapshot for the visible diff_error state. Repository guidance requires snapshots for user-visible error-state changes.

Resolution

Add a Playwright component visual test for the diff_error chat state. Cover representative multi-block, abbreviated, and truncated diagnostics. Commit the generated snapshots and verify that the persisted message renders without clipping or layout regressions.

Count only parser-recognized SEARCH blocks.

An escaped literal \<<<<<<< SEARCH can occur in SEARCH content. The parser keeps it inside the block and later removes the escape. If another block fails, this branch can report Applied 2 of 3 even though only one of two parsed blocks applied. Count only unescaped, line-level SEARCH markers.

Suggested fix
-			const searchBlocks = (diffContent.match(/<<<<<<< SEARCH/g) || []).length
+			const searchBlocks = (diffContent.match(/(?:^|\n)(?<!\\)<<<<<<< SEARCH>?[ \t]*(?=\r?\n|$)/g) || []).length

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Render the all-failure status before returning.

When every parsed SEARCH/REPLACE block fails, MultiSearchReplaceDiffStrategy returns an unsuccessful result with failParts but no blockCount. ApplyDiffTool then formats the failure and returns before its Applied X of Y diff blocks logic. The model therefore misses the Applied 0 of N diff blocks status and retry guidance.

Propagate the parsed block count on unsuccessful results and render the zero-of-N message in this failure branch. Keep the existing failure-detail redaction and truncation unchanged.

The only in-guard case here is 52 characters, so the 64-character cap isn't pinned. Would it make sense to add an it.each for exactly 64 characters (hint expected) and 65 characters (no hint expected)? Changing the cap to 1000 or <= to < currently passes all 23 tests in this file.

const diffContent = buildDiff(`start_line:${" ".repeat(40)}3\nnot-in-the-file`, "replacement")
expect(firstFailureError(await strategy.applyDiff(nonMatchingFile, diffContent))).toContain("LIKELY CAUSE")
})
it.each([
{ length: 64, hinted: true },
{ length: 65, hinted: false },
])("hints only while the first line fits the length guard ($length chars)", async ({ length, hinted }) => {
const diffContent = buildDiff(`startline${" ".repeat(length - 10)}3\nnot-in-the-file`, "replacement")
const errorText = firstFailureError(await strategy.applyDiff(nonMatchingFile, diffContent))
expect(errorText.includes("LIKELY CAUSE")).toBe(hinted)
})

Agreed, the 52-char case didn't pin the cap. Fixed in 7d30818: replaced it with your it.each for exactly 64 (hint expected) and 65 (no hint) characters, plus a toHaveLength(length) assertion so the fixture can't drift. Both fixtures match the hint regex (verified standalone in Node), so only length <= MAX_MARKER_HINT_LINE_LENGTH decides the outcome; raising the cap or changing <= to < now fails one case. Full Vitest/lint relies on CI because local dependencies are currently unavailable.

@edelauna addressed your length-guard boundary comment in 7d30818 (64/65-char it.each; reply in thread). Could you take another look when convenient?

src/core/diff/strategies/multi-search-replace.ts:649-667
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the parsed block count for the completed progress total.

The completed-state text counts raw SEARCH substrings in toolUse.params.diff. A block whose search or replace text contains SEARCH (for example, SEARCH_MODE) adds a phantom block to the total. A single successful edit can then show a count of 2. The parser-provided blockCount is the value the tool reports for the applied blocks.
