Summary

  • Add an opt-in remote control bridge that publishes task UI events to Zoo and applies inbound remote commands when the Zoo session is eligible.
  • Gate on the experimental setting plus a signed-in Zoo session. Map commands to the existing in-process task API.
  • Fixes [ENHANCEMENT] Remote task control when signed into Zoo #2013.

Test plan

  • Enable zoo-code.remoteControl.enabled, sign into Zoo, confirm bridge logs enabled when eligible.
  • Switch away from an eligible provider or sign out; confirm bridge disables.
  • With remote endpoints unavailable (404), confirm quiet backoff and no crash.
  • Unit tests: pnpm --dir src exec vitest run services/zoo-remote-control/__tests__/

Publish task UI events and apply remote commands when remote control is enabled and the Zoo session is eligible. Fixes #2013.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added remote control for Zoo Gateway tasks, with task-header options to start or end a session and open the dashboard.
    • Remote sessions share updates from the consented task and support responding to prompts, approving requests, changing modes, and managing tasks.
    • The task header shows whether remote control is active or unavailable. Remote control requires an authenticated Zoo Gateway session; other providers show a settings prompt.
  • Documentation
    • Updated privacy information to explain that remote-control transcripts, including conversation, file contents, and command output, are sent to your Zoo account and retained for seven days.

This change adds opt-in remote task control for eligible Zoo Gateway sessions. The extension publishes presence, snapshots, and message events, and polls Zoo for commands to apply to the live task. The task header displays session controls and availability status.

Explanation

The description includes the linked issue, feature summary, implementation intent, and repeatable test commands. It omits the template headings and checklist, and it does not report test results, but the core required information is present.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#2013] coding requirements are met. ZooRemoteControlBridge requires the opt-in session state, the Zoo Gateway provider, and a non-empty Zoo token. It publishes task snapshots, messages, and task events. executeRemoteCommand maps remote messages, follow-ups, ask approval and denial, cancellation, resumption, task creation, mode changes, and session ending to host task APIs. Deactivation removes listeners, stops polling, clears pending data, publishes offline presence, and rejects stale commands. The bridge, client, eligibility, projection, command, lifecycle, and UI tests cover these paths.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The .gitignore change adds a comment and excludes .cursor/. This local tooling change has no demonstrated connection to account-authenticated remote task control in issue [#2013]. The bridge implementation, contract, UI, privacy documentation, localization, and tests support the issue.

Resolution

Remove the .cursor/ entry and its comment from this pull request, or move the .gitignore change to a separate pull request.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The prior security finding remains present. In changed packages/core/src/zoo-remote-control/executeRemoteCommand.ts:203-212, resume_task rejects only a missing taskId; it does not require a current task or compare the ID with the current task. The changed bridge forwards the ID directly at src/services/zoo-remote-control/ZooRemoteControlBridge.ts:642-657, and API.resumeTask loads that ID from task history at src/extension/api.ts:220-225. An eligible authenticated remote client can therefore resume any historical task ID. Changed tests explicitly accept t9 with no current task and task-9 while the live task is task-1.

Resolution

Apply ensureTaskTarget to resume_task, so the command requires a current task and an exact taskId match before calling host.resumeTask. Return missing_task_id or task_mismatch without invoking the callback. Add tests for a mismatched resume ID and for resume with no current task.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

Event-sequence persistence remains unsafe in the changed bridge. enqueueEvent() increments eventSeq and calls persistEventSeq() without awaiting it (ZooRemoteControlBridge.ts:438-443); flushEventsOnce() removes and posts the batch without awaiting eventSeqPersistChain (:560-567). If globalState.update("zooRemoteControl.eventSeq", ...) is delayed, the server can receive the batch before the sequence is durable. dispose() releases resources immediately, and the persistence callback then returns when this.disposed is true (:250-255), so the sequence write can be skipped. A later bridge can read the old sequence and reuse event numbers. shutdown() also does not await the persistence chain. The latest change fixes the prior active-before-consent ordering by writing consent first, but setSessionActive() still uses two independent updates without rollback; either update can fail and leave stale or partially updated session state.

Resolution

Track the sequence high-water mark for each batch and await the serialized persistence chain before posting that batch. Do not post a batch when persistence fails, and retain or explicitly discard failed batches under a documented policy. Await the persistence chain in shutdown(). Make dispose() prevent resource release until the chain is handled, or provide an equivalent safe handoff. Persist sessionActive and consentedTaskId atomically, or roll back the first update and restore in-memory state when the second update fails. Add delayed-write, teardown, and partial-write tests.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The prior coverage gaps remain. ZooRemoteControlBridge.migrateLegacySettingThenSync() adds unset-state migration, existing-state preservation, and best-effort legacy-setting cleanup at src/services/zoo-remote-control/ZooRemoteControlBridge.ts:180-203, but ZooRemoteControlBridge.spec.ts has no migration or legacy-setting cases and its fixture always returns a boolean session state. Task.hasPendingAsk() and the changed ask-response persistence are untested at the Task layer; src/core/task/__tests__ has no direct hasPendingAsk coverage for pending, answered, partial, superseded, or aborted asks. TaskHeader.tsx adds durable remote-steering banners and actions, but the PR adds no *.visual.tsx Playwright component test or committed baseline. webview-ui/AGENTS.md:44-57 requires a visual snapshot for user-visible-at-a-glance changes.

Resolution

Add bridge tests for unset-state migration, existing-state preservation, and legacy-setting clear failure. Add Task-level tests for a matching pending ask and false results for answered, partial, superseded, and aborted asks, including the retained ask response behavior. Add a representative TaskHeader.visual.tsx Playwright component snapshot and commit its generated baseline.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The shutdown race remains in the changed ZooRemoteControlBridge path. shutdown() increments the epoch, awaits deactivate({ notifyOffline: true }), and only then calls releaseResources() (ZooRemoteControlBridge.ts:206-211). deactivate() clears timers and listeners, but then awaits forced offline presence (:336-355). During that await, the changed webview handler can call setSessionActive(true) (webviewMessageHandler.ts:2068-2077), or the secret listener can trigger syncActiveState() (ZooRemoteControlBridge.ts:138-145). Because disposed is still false, applyEligibility() can call activate() (:297-315), which installs API listeners and three intervals (:321-326). The original shutdown then calls releaseResources() (:220-230), which does not clear timers, unbind API listeners, or set active false. The reactivated listeners and timers therefore remain after shutdown and can continue work.

Resolution

Enter a terminal or shutting-down state before the first shutdown await. Ignore session and eligibility reactivation while shutdown is pending, and serialize shutdown with syncActiveState(). Make releaseResources() unconditionally call clearTimers() and bindApiListeners(false), and set active to false. Add a regression test that blocks forced offline presence, starts shutdown(), triggers session or token reactivation, releases the request, and verifies that no listeners, timers, presence, snapshots, or polls remain.

Current step: Address maintainer or CODEOWNER feedback, push an update, then re-request review from the blocking maintainer.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.

Add locale strings for the remote control setting and guard vscode APIs used during extension tests. Fixes #2013.
Cover ZooRemoteControlClient and bridge command/lifecycle paths so codecov/patch clears the 80% gate.
Align the IDE event batch payload with the website /api/extension/remote/events contract.
Add message shaping, partial coalesce, persistent seq, snapshot upload, switch_mode/answer_followup, and safer HTTP backoff so the Agents IDE tab can mirror and drive tasks end-to-end.

Require a match for the Git author identity.

Line 20 and Line 21 print the configured user.name and user.email, but the rule does not say that they must match the required identity in Line 13 and Line 14. A contributor can run the preflight and continue with a mismatched author identity. Require both values to match, and stop Git operations until they do.

Reject commands that target a different task.

If the user switches from task A to task B before an approve_ask command for A arrives, getCurrentTask() returns B and this branch approves B’s ask. deny_ask, message, and cancel_task also act on the current task without checking a supplied command.taskId. Compare the command target with the live task before dispatch. Acknowledge a mismatch as failed instead of acting on another task.

Update the effective remote-control setting.

If a workspace sets zoo-code.remoteControl.enabled to false, the task-header button reaches this new allowlist entry, but the generic handler writes true only to global user settings. Workspace settings override that value. The bridge therefore remains disabled and the offer cannot enable it. Choose a target that updates the effective setting for the current workspace, or report that the workspace override prevents enabling. (code.visualstudio.com)

Match the opt-in scope to the offer.

The offer says it will enable remote steering for “this task,” but enableRemoteSteer updates a global user setting. In another open VS Code window with an authenticated Zoo Gateway session, the bridge reads that global setting and can publish that window’s task as well. Use task- or workspace-scoped opt-in, or tell the user before enabling that the setting applies across their VS Code instances. VS Code applies user settings globally. (code.visualstudio.com)

Do not present an unavailable bridge as active.

When the remote endpoint returns 404, the bridge enters unavailable backoff, but this condition still displays “Remote steer is on.” A user can leave the task expecting remote control to work while the endpoint cannot accept updates or commands. Expose bridge availability to the webview and distinguish an enabled preference from an available connection.

Send workspace basename only, bound nested tool payloads, await identity/seq persistence, ignore stale command polls after dispose, and cover the regression paths CodeRabbit flagged.
Replace the delayed step-away upsell with a always-visible header action so users can deliberately enable remote steer on any open Zoo Gateway task, including completed ones.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Bound the total size of the serialized tool payload.

boundJsonValue caps each string at 48,000 characters and each array at 20 items. It does not cap the total size. An object with many keys, or 20 array entries that each hold a 48,000-character string, still produces megabytes of JSON. The bridge sends that JSON in event and snapshot bodies. A snapshot can hold 80 messages, so one POST can reach hundreds of MB. Add an aggregate character budget. One option is to check JSON.stringify(result).length and replace oversized fields with truncated placeholders. Another option is to lower the per-string cap for nested values.

Update boundJsonValue to enforce an aggregate serialized-character budget, not
just per-string and per-array limits, so nested values and objects with many

Make the 401 re-queue test check that the batch was re-queued.

The test only checks toHaveBeenCalled(). That check passes even if the batch is dropped. After the backoff ends, check that a second postEvents call contains the task_idle event.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Await the offline presence before the extension finishes deactivating.

dispose() starts deactivate({ notifyOffline: true }) with void and does not await the result. VS Code does not wait for this promise when the extension deactivates. As a result, the offline POST is often lost, and the dashboard keeps showing the instance as online until presence expires. Expose an async shutdown() method and await it from the extension's deactivate.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not ack approve_ask or deny_ask as successful when no ask is pending.

task.approveAsk and task.denyAsk run without a check for a pending ask. The bridge then acks "acked" at Line 761. Commands can arrive late, for example after a 2 s poll or after the local user has already answered. In that case the remote dashboard shows a success that did not happen. A queued approval can also answer a later, unrelated ask. Check that the task has a pending ask before you call these methods. If no ask is pending, ack failed with no_pending_ask. Bind the command to the ask ts if the schema allows it.

Move command execution into core so the extension stays under the mutation-diff line budget. Steering enables remote control and opens the dashboard; non-Zoo Gateway profiles get an IDE prompt to switch.
Discard the task-id return so the remote command host matches Promise<void>.

Remove the as never casts on the host adapters.

mode as never and getCurrentTask() as never turn off type checking at the boundary between the bridge and the executor. If Task.approveAsk or denyAsk changes signature, or a mode string is not a valid Mode, the compiler reports no error. The path instructions forbid unjustified assertions. Task should already satisfy the host's structural type, so return this.provider.getCurrentTask() directly. Validate or narrow mode to Mode instead of casting it.

src/core/task/Task.ts:2478-2479
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Find the blocking ask instead of checking the final message.

If Task.say() appends a non-interactive message while an ask waits for a response, it deliberately leaves lastMessageTs unchanged. hasPendingAsk() then returns false because the final message is a say. The bridge also reads the final message timestamp, so it rejects a remote approval or denial for the still-pending ask. Identify the blocking ask by lastMessageTs, and have the bridge use that ask’s timestamp.

Update Task.hasPendingAsk() to locate the ask message matching lastMessageTs
rather than requiring the final clineMessages entry to be an ask. Update the
bridge’s pending-ask timestamp lookup to use that same ask’s timestamp so remote
approvals and denials target the blocking ask.

zooRemoteCommandsResponseSchema so an unknown command type does not reject the
entire response batch; preserve valid commands for delivery so the bridge can
acknowledge the unknown command as failed. Add a client-level test proving a
batch containing an unknown command still delivers its valid commands.

Review comments at @src/services/zoo-remote-control/ZooRemoteControlBridge.ts:
- Around line 238-247: Update resolveInstanceId so each VS Code window receives
a distinct, session-specific instance ID instead of reusing the shared
globalState value under INSTANCE_ID_STATE_KEY. Scope event sequence,
session-active, and consent state to that window as well, preventing windows
from overwriting each other’s state.
- Around line 358-362: Update deactivate so an inactive bridge returns before
publishing presence regardless of notifyOffline, while preserving timer cleanup

Validate remote commands individually.

getCommands parses the complete response before pollCommands sees any command. A single invalid entry, including an unsupported type or oversized field, makes requestJson return { ok: false, status: 0 }. pollCommands then returns without executing or acknowledging any command. Valid commands in the same response can therefore be skipped. If the endpoint retains unacknowledged commands, later polls can repeat this failure.

Parse the envelope, then validate each entry with zooRemoteCommandSchema.safeParse. Execute valid entries. Acknowledge invalid entries as { status: "failed", errorCode: "invalid_command" } when commandId is a string, then continue with the remaining entries. Keep the 25-command limit as a separate explicit bound; do not remove it unless the server contract guarantees an equivalent cap.

Update getCommands and pollCommands so parsing the response envelope does not
reject the entire batch when an individual command is invalid. Validate each

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

This test passes only because the mocked client bypasses zooRemoteCommandsResponseSchema.

The test expects an unknown_command ack for type: "not_a_real_command". The real ZooRemoteControlClient.getCommands rejects such a response and returns { ok: false, status: 0 }. In production, the bridge never reaches executeRemoteCommand for this input. The test therefore gives false confidence. Fix the schema handling in ZooRemoteControlClient. Then add a client-level test that proves a batch with one unknown command still delivers the valid commands.

instanceId, eventSeq, and the session flag live in globalState, which all VS Code windows share.

The instance ID (INSTANCE_ID_STATE_KEY), the event sequence (EVENT_SEQ_STATE_KEY), SESSION_ACTIVE_STATE_KEY, and CONSENTED_TASK_STATE_KEY are stored in context.globalState. VS Code shares globalState across windows of the same extension. Two windows therefore use the same instanceId once both bridges become eligible, for example after a secret or profile-change sync.

Consequences:

  • Both windows poll getCommands(instanceId) for the same queue. A command for a task in window A can reach window B. Window B acks task_mismatch or not_eligible as failed, even though window A could have run it.
  • Both windows write eventSeq independently. Last write wins, so sequence numbers can repeat or go backwards after a restart.
  • Presence from the two windows overwrites each other on the server.
  • Each window reads consentedTaskId once in the constructor. A consent change in one window leaves the other window with stale consent.

Use a per-window identity. For example, derive the instance ID from vscode.env.sessionId and keep the sequence in memory. Alternatively, store the per-window state in workspaceState. Keep the session flag and consent keyed to the window.

As per path instructions: "Check persistence and lifecycle invariants: ... cross-window state consistency".

Update resolveInstanceId so each VS Code window receives a distinct,
session-specific instance ID instead of reusing the shared globalState value
under INSTANCE_ID_STATE_KEY. Scope event sequence, session-active, and consent
state to that window as well, preventing windows from overwriting each other’s
state.

The bridge posts online-capable presence data on shutdown even when remote control was never enabled.

shutdown() (Line 201) and dispose() (Line 208) call deactivate({ notifyOffline: true }) unconditionally. The early return at Line 358 applies only when notifyOffline is false. When active is false, deactivate still runs publishPresence(false, { force: true }).

publishPresence checks only getCachedZooCodeToken(). Any user who is signed into Zoo and has not opted in therefore sends an authenticated POST to /api/extension/remote/presence at each extension deactivation. The payload contains instanceId, the workspace folder name, editorName, and taskId. taskId is the current task when consentedTaskId is undefined. This breaks the opt-in contract of the PR and issue #2013. It also sends data to Zoo before the user consents.

Skip all work when the bridge is not active:

93-93: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

The bridge processes only the 25 commands returned by partitionRemoteCommands, and it does not retain the omitted tail locally. However, no repository source or public documentation establishes that the server fails to cap or requeue those commands. The proposed data-loss finding remains unsupported.
