Part of the vps2 durable per-view state series — tracked in easonLiangWorldedtech#41 (cross-repo: this PR is standalone against upstream/main @ 0d937c0).

Issue (created at PR-open time): #1529

What

All title-bar commands (+ / Settings / History / Marketplace / popout / focus) resolve to a single surface-blind "visible" ClineProvider instance, and setPanel's mutual wipe of the sidebar/tab slots leaves stale references once a tab and the sidebar coexist. This PR makes each title-bar command target the instance its click originated from:

  • setPanel no longer wipes the other slot (each branch assigns only its own slot); the exported setPanel / getPanel signatures are kept.
  • The four sidebar title-bar handlers target the click-origin provider that registerCommands was handed.
  • Four new *InTab command ids (packages/types/src/vscode.ts) rewire the editor/title menu, reusing the existing i18n keys/icons (zero new strings); the tab handlers resolve the owning instance via the new static ClineProvider.getInstanceForView(panel) (identity match over activeInstances) instead of the surface-blind getVisibleInstance.
  • openClineInNewTab reuses the live tracked tab panel (reveal + didBecomeVisible post) instead of unconditionally creating a new provider + panel.
  • The focusInput post follows focusPanel's selection: the tab provider when a tab is tracked (resolved via getInstanceForView), the sidebar provider otherwise, and nothing when the tracked tab has no live instance.
  • Palette visibility is gated per surface under contributes.menus.commandPalette: the *InTab ids show while a tab is active, the sidebar ids in every other case, so a palette invocation always targets the surface the user is on.

Design decisions

  • D1 (mutual wipe): fixed by the no-wipe setPanel. The sidebar onDidDispose asymmetry (the sidebar slot is never cleared) is pre-existing and retained; with no-wipe a stale slot resolves to a disposed instance via getInstanceForView, and the InTab handlers then no-op safely.
  • D2 (no tab reuse): fixed by the panel reuse via getInstanceForView.
  • D3 (surface-blind targeting): the five title-bar commands are contributed to both view/title and editor/title in package.json (verified by the Phase-0 A6 audit); the editor/title entries are rewired to the *InTab ids.
  • D4 (focusPanel tab-first resolution): self-resolves once the no-wipe lands — focusPanel.ts is deliberately unchanged (no spec exists for it).
  • zoo-code.newTask (command-palette only) intentionally stays on the visible-provider path (focus-sidebar fallback); documented as a known limitation below.
  • Webview-originated actions are per-instance by construction (setWebviewMessageListener wires this); the single leak (focusPanelRequest) is out of scope here.

Measurements

  • a+d vs upstream/main @ 0d937c0: 484 (411+/73−) — over the 400 soft budget by 112: the mutation gate required per-post distinct-error catch pinning, an awaited InTab no-op matrix (all four commands), and real-class getInstanceForView coverage (registerCommands.spec auto-mocks ClineProvider, so the real find callback had no coverage). Under the 600 hard cap. Composition: ~372 first-cut (impl + spec) + ~112 mutation-killing tests.
  • src executable lines: 144 a+d (registerCommands.ts 99+/27−, ClineProvider.ts 10+, packages/types 8+) — inside the ~300 mutation preflight.

Gates

  • eslint --prune-suppressions: pass (suppression counts unchanged; prune-only reindent reverted)
  • check-types: pass (13 packages)
  • vitest: registerCommands.spec.ts 36 pass; ClineProvider.spec.ts 155 pass; packages/types 5 pass
  • stryker-diff ci @ 0d937c0: 72/72 killed, 0 surviving, 0 uncovered, 0 blocking (registerCommands.ts + ClineProvider.ts)
  • e2e / i18n / visual: n/a (zero new i18n strings; no webview-ui changes)

Parked / documented

  • zoo-code.newTask stays on the visible-provider path (palette-only surface; focus-sidebar fallback).
  • The A6 audit's alternate minimal-fix design (public renderContext / getSurfaceProviderOrLog / active-surface-first getVisibleInstance) was considered and not adopted.

Porting notes

None — new fix (F0) identified by the Phase-0 A6 button-targeting audit; no hunks ported from the closed draft PRs.

Updated this round

  • Pushed bc39e81a5 -> 08225f581 for the two reviewer threads (both replied and resolved):

    • The commandPalette contribution was at contributes level, where VS Code does not read palette visibility - the when clauses were inert. It now lives under contributes.menus.commandPalette, and the four sidebar commands got complementary when clauses (activeWebviewPanelId != zoo-code.TabPanelProvider). This also closes the palette-with-only-a-tab-open case where the sidebar handler evicted the hidden sidebar's task while the tab did nothing: with a tab active the palette now offers the *InTab variant.
    • Regression Evidence row: added the focused negative test - both panels tracked, getInstanceForView(tabPanel) returns undefined, the lookup is made and neither provider receives focusInput. Negative control: a sidebar fallback on the failed lookup reddens exactly this test; restore byte-exact (git hash-object verified).
  • Proofs at this head: registerCommands.spec 52 passed (was 51); eslint (CI command, full src) exit 0; package.json parses; diff touches only src/package.json and the spec.

  • Format gate follow-up: pushed 08225f581 -> 6a7ae11f6 - the compile job's format:check step (prettier --check . at the repo root, added on main after this branch's base) flagged src/package.json and the spec; both are now prettier-clean at the repo config (part of the spec's formatting drift predates this PR and is normalized by the gate). No behavior change: spec still 52 passed, eslint (CI command) exit 0.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added dedicated New Task, Settings, Marketplace, and History actions to editor tabs.
    • Editor-tab actions target the tab they were opened from and appear in the command palette when an editor tab is active.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Reopening an existing editor tab now reuses it instead of creating a duplicate.
    • Improved focus handling when the sidebar and an editor tab are open.
    • Improved handling of simultaneous tab-opening requests and tabs that are unavailable or closed.
    • Replacing or closing a sidebar view no longer disrupts the active view’s actions.

The change adds editor-tab command variants and routes sidebar and tab actions to their respective providers. Provider lookup, focus routing, and tab-panel lifecycle handling were updated. Tab-panel creation reuses live panels and shares concurrent requests.

Changes: Surface command routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command contracts and menu wiring
packages/types/src/vscode.ts, src/package.json
Adds four *InTab command IDs and contributions. Tab editor-title entries and command-palette items use the tab-specific commands.
Provider lookup and surface tracking
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts
Adds lookup by view, tracks sidebar and tab references independently, and clears references only when they still match the disposed view or panel. Per-surface cleanup preserves listeners for replacement views.
Surface command handlers and focus routing
src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json
Routes sidebar actions to the registered provider and tab actions to the tracked tab provider. Tests cover routing, telemetry, no-op cases, errors, focus behavior, and action calls. The test file’s lint suppression is removed.
Tab-panel creation and reuse
src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts
Reuses a tracked tab panel with a live provider and shares concurrent creation requests. Tests cover placement, visibility, disposal, MDM lookup failure, and creation retries.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description provides detailed implementation context, issue references, design decisions, test results, limitations, and follow-up changes. It does not use the repository template headings or include the completed pre-submission checklist, but the required substance is mostly present.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The changed paths only reroute fixed command actions to the provider that owns the sidebar or tab view, add view-identity checks, and scope disposal cleanup. The new commands accept no user-controlled arguments and do not add secret/PII handling, command execution, approval bypasses, or allowlist changes. Error logging in the new MDM fallback and post-message catches does not expose a newly introduced secret or PII path; the logged values are exception text.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path is present. The diff changes command routing, tab-panel reuse/serialization, and view-scoped disposal. The changed plusButtonClicked paths await task eviction, workspace refresh, and posts; postActions only sends UI actions. No changed storage write, non-atomic persistence operation, rollback path, or persisted-default propagation can be cited.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No concrete new lifecycle leak or duplicate-work path is evident. The changed tab-open path shares and clears its in-flight promise on success or failure, reuses a live tracked provider, and clears the tab reference only for the disposed panel. The changed sidebar path scopes message, focus, visibility, and configuration disposables to each view, then disposes only the old view's resources during replacement. Provider disposal cancels throttled work, queued tasks, pending probes, and tracked disposables, and getInstanceForView excludes providers after disposal starts.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

A changed sidebar-disposal branch lacks focused coverage. ClineProvider.ts:1163-1167 now rejects pending theme-fixture probes only when the disposed view is still the current view. The replacement-view test at ClineProvider.spec.ts:596-656 checks listener ownership, but it creates no pending probe and never verifies that disposing the stale view preserves the probe. The theme test at :1457-1465 calls clearWebviewResources directly, so it does not cover this conditional lifecycle path. A regression that rejects the replacement view's pending probe would pass.

Resolution

Add a ClineProvider unit test at the replacement-view layer. Resolve an old sidebar view, start a pending requestWebviewThemeFixture probe, resolve a replacement view, and dispose the old view. Assert that the probe remains pending and can resolve through the replacement. Also dispose the current replacement and assert that a pending probe rejects with the disposal error. This directly covers both sides of the new identity condition.

…isposals

Pre-merge warnings on Zoo-Code-Org#1528:
- Bidirectional independence is now pinned: resolving the sidebar after the tab keeps the tab as the tracked surface and focus target (the reverse order was already covered), and getPanel still reports the tab.
- The sidebar disposal path clears the tracked slot with an identity check (clearSidebarPanel), so a late disposal of a replaced view cannot clear the replacement; focusInput/focusPanel resolve the sidebar through ClineProvider.getInstanceForView and skip a tracked-but-dead view instead of posting into it.

Tests: registerCommands spec 55 passed, ClineProvider spec 211 passed. Local tsc shows only the worktree's pre-existing dependency contamination in untouched files (the changed files are clean); CI is the authority for the remaining environment-sensitive checks.

Comment thread src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts
Comment thread src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts Outdated
A replacement sidebar view can resolve before the old view disposal callback runs. The guarded clearSidebarPanel kept the slot, but clearWebviewResources() then disposed the replacement listeners from the shared array, leaving it tracked but deaf. Listeners are now recorded per surface; the sidebar disposal handler releases only the disposed surface listeners (and rejects theme probes only when it was the current view). Adds tests: replacement keeps every listener while the old view listeners are disposed, focusInput never hands a dead sidebar view to focusPanel, and the focusPanel command targets the tracked live surfaces.
The lint gate counts no-explicit-any per file with an exact suppression budget; the new test pushed the file one over. The fake view now uses a typed cast instead of any.
Some test doubles return undefined from mocked vscode registration APIs. The per-surface tracking and scoped cleanup now skip undefined entries, matching the guard the flat cleanup loop already had; without it 202 webview tests failed on dispose. core/webview suites 677 passed.
The remaining pre-merge warning asked for the focusPanel command test with a dead tracked sidebar: track the sidebar, make getInstanceForView return undefined, invoke the handler and assert focusPanel receives no sidebar. registerCommands 57 passed.

The requested focusPanel coverage is in the current head (fc1614d0b)

Both zoo-code.focusPanel cases are covered in src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts:

  • live surfaces: track a sidebar and a tab panel, have ClineProvider.getInstanceForView resolve both, invoke the handler, assert focusPanel(tabPanel, sidebarPanel);
  • dead tracked sidebar (the negative case this row asks for): track a sidebar panel, make ClineProvider.getInstanceForView return undefined, invoke the handler, and assert the mocked focusPanel receives undefined for the sidebar.

The row text appears to describe the previous head. registerCommands suite 57 passed and the current head is 6/6 green.

Please re-run the pre-merge checks against fc1614d0b.

🟡 Minor · Clean up the tab when initialization fails. · registerCommands.ts:399-416

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clean up the tab when initialization fails.

resolveWebviewView can reject after the provider and panel are tracked. The rejection path clears only pendingTabPanelCreation. The next invocation can therefore reuse and reveal the incomplete panel instead of creating a new one.

Suggested fix

Update the initialization flow around tabProvider.resolveWebviewView so a
rejection clears the tracked tab panel when it is newPanel, disposes
tabProvider, and rethrows the error. Preserve successful initialization
behavior.
