Trust the provider: no verified-email requirement, no TOTP for linked accounts - #33
Conversation
The check assumed a provider that hands out accounts to strangers, where someone could set their profile email to a colleague's and inherit their roles. The provider this is built for is internal and gates access to the application behind manual approval, so the address it states is exactly as trustworthy as the identity it states — and interrogating one while taking the other as gospel was incoherent. So the gate is gone, along with the setting added yesterday to work around it: one fewer knob, and no configuration needed to make Authentik work. The `email_verified` claim is still read and still decides whether the local `email_verified_at` is set. It no longer decides who may sign in, including when the provider explicitly answers false. What still holds: an account already linked to a different subject is never re-claimed on an email address. That is the check that stops one identity inheriting another's account, and it never depended on the verified flag. Recorded in the README and the operations guide as the assumption it is: point this at a provider that does not vet its own users and the reasoning does not hold. Clear verification state after an unverified email change.
When $emailIsFree is true and $identity->emailVerified is false, this path replaces $user->email but leaves a prior email_verified_at value unchanged. The new address is then recorded as verified even though the provider did not verify it. Clear the timestamp when this path changes the email to an unverified address.

Follow-up to #32. Two corrections, both the same shape: #32 hedged where it should have taken the provider at its word.
No verified-email requirement to link an existing account
The check assumed a provider that hands out accounts to strangers: someone could set their profile email to a colleague's address and inherit their roles. The provider this is built for is internal and gates access to this application behind manual approval, so the address it states is exactly as trustworthy as the identity it states — and interrogating one while taking the other as gospel was incoherent.
email_verifiedis also optional in the spec, and Authentik does not send it, which is what made this a bug rather than a policy: every attempt to link an existing account was refused for a reason that had nothing to do with the person signing in.OidcUserProvisioneris gone. An existing account is linked on its email address whatever the provider says about verification, including an explicitemail_verified: false.trust_provider_emailis dropped — column, validation, API field and settings toggle. It only existed to work around the gate, so Authentik now works with no configuration and there is one fewer knob whose wrong setting looks like a broken console.OidcIdentityno longer needs Make single sign-on able to stand alone, and fix Authentik account linking #32's three-state claim reading, since nothing branches on "said no" versus "said nothing" any more. What still holds: an account already linked to a different

email_verified_atis set.No enforced TOTP for accounts linked to the provider
#32 exempted only accounts with no local password, which missed the common case: an account created with
mwdeploy:create-userand later signed into with the provider. Those kept being sent to enrolment, which is exactly what the exemption was meant to stop. The exemption now follows the account — linked to the provider, exempt — rather than whether it happens to have a password. Accounts the provider knows nothing about are unchanged, which is every account on an install without SSO. Enrolment stays available to everyone, exempt or not.
The cost, named rather than buried. A linked account that keeps a local password can be entered by that password without the provider seeing it, and so without its MFA. Switching password sign-in off (#32) is what closes that, and is the intended configuration for an install relying on the provider for its second factor. This is stated in the README, the operations guide and on the settings screen itself.
The assumptions, written down
Both changes rest on the provider being internal and vetting its own users. The README and
docs/OPERATIONS.mdnow say so explicitly — better in the docs than rediscovered later from behaviour by someone wondering why this console trusts an email address it never verified.Testing
