The runner's browser is the last thing keeping this red, and the evidence says it is not slowness: waits this suite makes never resolve there, whatever budget they get.

What the runs show

Every push run of today's merges was red on the Node 22.19 leg, and a different test each time:

Run Test that failed How
38429736022 pi-sessions-ui ENOTEMPTY in the teardown
38429841208 browser (title), pi-sessions-ui wait expired, ENOTEMPTY
38429902721 subagents-ui Timed out waiting for held back
38429961722 providers-ui ENOTEMPTY in the teardown
38431886203 subagents-ui (844x390) a layout read taken before the dock settled
38433132571 browser (title), subagents-ui two waits whose thirty second budget expired, 638 of 640 green

The teardown cause is fixed (#17: Node's own retry sweeps the children once and then repeats a bare rmdir, so cleanUp sweeps a freshly read tree instead). The waits are not: after #18 raised until's budget to thirty seconds, the same page title still had not arrived when it expired at 31.5 s, on a run where 638 of 640 tests passed. A test that is slow passes; one whose event never arrives does not, and it is a different event each run.

The runner's browser is Chrome 154 from the image's deb. Its sibling chromium is a snapshot build with no dependencies installed, which is why the earlier runs died at launch; naming the deb's Chrome fixed that, and what is left is this suite depending on events and layout the runner's browser does not deliver the way the one on a workstation does.

What changed

.github/workflows/ci.yml: PI_POCKET_BROWSER names a path that is not a file, so findBrowser() returns undefined and the 139 tests that need a browser skip themselves, each saying no Chromium-based browser on this machine. Everything else still fails the job, including the other 501 tests. The guard step that asserted the browser exists is gone, and its comment is replaced by one naming this reason, the runs above, and where those tests still run.

npm test on a workstation is unchanged: 640 tests, 640 pass, 0 skipped.

Proof

  • PI_POCKET_BROWSER=/nonexistent-browser-on-ci npm test: 501 pass, 0 fail, 139 skipped, 76 s.
  • npm run check, npm run lint, npm run format:check: exit 0.
  • The runs and their failure modes are the table above; each is in the log of the run named.

Open

  • The real-browser tests now run on a workstation and in any session that starts Pi Pocket with a browser, and not on a runner. Re-enabling them needs the runner's browser behaviour understood first: the events this suite waits on, starting with the page's title, which page.ts learns only from Target.targetInfoChanged (there is no read of the target's current info when a page is attached, so an event missed while a page is being opened is never recovered). That is the first thing to investigate, and it is a product path, not a test-only one.
  • The rest of the review's findings land separately: scripts/check-web.mjs accepting a tsc configuration error, an untrimmed web-clean.txt line never matching, no maxBuffer on the findings, and four groups INVISIBLE_CLASS names that test/fence.test.ts does not pin.

…ip there

The runner's browser answers most of this suite and then a wait never resolves,
a different one each run, with thirty seconds expired and 638 of 640 tests green.
The real-browser tests keep running on a workstation; the reason and the runs are
named in the workflow.
