Seen on the reference machine while a Windows VM held the RTX 4090:

  • berth vfio status 0000:01:00.0 said "berthd unreachable" while berthd answered. With an address, the command skipped berthd along with nvidia-smi. Now only nvidia-smi is skipped.
  • berthd's line printed "4 MiB used of 24564 MiB" from a reading 24 minutes old. While berthd reports the card in a VM, the line now says "passed through to a VM (vfio-pci) (last memory reading N s ago)".

Proof: TestVfioStatusWithAnAddressStillAsksBerthd failed before the change (output included "berthd unreachable") and passes after. TestVfioStatusNamesTheVMNotAStaleReading covers the wording. Run live during the VM session, the new binary prints the VM state and the granted vfio:galaxy hold. Full proof green.

…e VM

With an address, berth vfio status skipped berthd as well as nvidia-smi and
then reported it unreachable; while the card was in a VM it printed the last
memory reading as if current. Both seen on aphotic with galaxy holding the
card.
