Lightweight security helpers for signing, integrity manifests, prompt scanning, and runtime execution policy checks.
Agent Shield is the open-source security toolkit built by Synter Media for teams that build growth agents on top of Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or custom LLM runtimes.
It gives your runtime several concrete building blocks:
- sign execution intents before a runtime forwards them to ad-platform or backend APIs;
- generate and verify signed manifests for agent skill directories;
- scan and redact prompt-injection-like patterns in external text and agent files;
- enforce simple runtime policy checks such as per-action allowlists and budget step caps.
agent-shield is a library, not a scheduler, ad-platform SDK, webhook worker, or deployment engine. It is designed to plug into a broader execution runtime.
- π Cryptographic HMAC Signing: Sign agent tool execution intents with replay protection via
SynterAgentSigner. - π Skill Manifest Integrity Guard: Detect tampering, missing files, and unexpected files in protected agent directories via
SynterIntegrityGuard. - π§Ή Prompt Injection Shield: Inspect and redact prompt-injection-like patterns before external content enters LLM context via
SynterPromptSanitizer. - βοΈ Runtime Execution Policy: Enforce action allowlists, signature age limits, and budget increase caps via
SynterExecutionGuard. - π§Ύ Authenticated Local Audit Trail: Append decision records to an HMAC-authenticated, hash-linked JSONL ledger via
SynterAuditTrail. - βοΈ CLI Agent Compiler: Scan agent files and emit a signed
agent.growth.json.sigmanifest.
- run an agent scheduler, queue, sandbox, or background worker;
- fetch ad-platform metrics, Stripe events, or telemetry for you;
- deploy agents to Synter or any other execution environment;
- guarantee that a prompt or artifact is universally safe;
- enforce policy unless the host application checks and applies the result.
npm install @synter/agent-shield
# or
pnpm add @synter/agent-shieldpip install synter-agent-shieldUse an independently generated secret containing at least 32 UTF-8 bytes. Load it from a secret manager, rotate it through a controlled migration, and never place it in source, command-line arguments, or logs.
Compile any agent directory into a signed manifest after scanning agent files for suspicious prompt-injection-like content:
SYNTER_MASTER_KEY="$(your-secret-manager read agent-shield)" \
npx @synter/agent-shield compile ./my-growth-agentPrefer injecting SYNTER_MASTER_KEY from a secret manager. The --secret option is intended for local development because command-line arguments may be retained in shell history or visible to other processes.
Output:
π‘οΈ [Synter Agent Shield] Compiling Growth Agent at: /path/to/my-growth-agent
π Step 1: Scanning for prompt injection vulnerabilities...
β
Step 2: Generated cryptographically signed manifest: ./agent.growth.json.sig
π Step 3: Verified 4 files with signature: 8f74a9b2c...
π Growth Agent successfully compiled to the Agent Shield manifest format.
If the compiler finds suspicious patterns in agent files, it blocks compilation and prints the file path, rule name, and matched text.

SynterAgentSignerprovides shared-secret authenticity, tamper detection, and a bounded freshness window between systems that already trust the same secret. Envelopes older than the configured age or more than 30 seconds in the future are rejected. The host must still deduplicate a signature or business idempotency key during that window before executing any non-idempotent action.SynterIntegrityGuardproves that a directory still matches a signed manifest produced earlier with the same secret. It protects every regular file, including hidden configuration, dependencies, and executable scripts, except the generated rootagent.growth.json.sigfile. Signed metadata includes the manifest algorithm, version, file count, and file hashes; symlink roots, symlink entries, and non-regular files are rejected.SynterPromptSanitizeris heuristic and rule-based; findings reduce risk but do not certify safety.SynterExecutionGuardproduces allow/deny decisions with reasons; it is not a sandbox and does not enforce anything by itself.- An explicit empty action allowlist denies every action; omitting the allowlist uses the explicit
"*"default. Budget increases require an explicit history array/listβuse an empty collection only after a successful history lookup found no prior changes. SynterAuditTrailuses keyed HMAC digests plus hash chaining and authenticates the existing chain before each append. It assumes one writer per ledger. HMAC alone cannot reveal deletion of the whole ledger or replacement with a previously valid prefix; persistgetCheckpoint()results outside the ledger and pass the expected checkpoint toverify()when rollback detection is required. For stronger guarantees, export entries to durable append-only infrastructure.
Use separate secrets for intent signing, manifest signing, and audit authentication. Store them in a KMS or secret manager, scope access to the minimum required component, and rotate them according to your incident-response policy.
agent-shield does not by itself:
- fetch ad-platform metrics;
- schedule agents or background jobs;
- ingest Stripe, PostHog, or webhook events;
- deploy agents to Synter or any other runtime;
- guarantee immutability of your storage layer.
Those responsibilities belong to the execution runtime around this library. agent-shield provides the signing, verification, scanning, and local policy primitives that runtime can call.
- API and compatibility expectations are documented in VERSIONING.md.
- Security reporting guidance lives in SECURITY.md.
- User-visible changes should be tracked in CHANGELOG.md.
