Daily backups to the user's folder are now crash-safe.
Why
BackupStore.write deleted (or truncated) today's backup before the new content was fully written. A crash, kill, or full disk in that window lost today's backup.
How
New content goes to a fresh temp document <day>.tmp.json first. It ends in .json because SAF providers append the MIME extension otherwise, and Backup.isBackupFileName does not match it, so it's never listed or pruned.
Today's old file is deleted (checked) only after the temp is complete.
The temp is renamed into place, or copied for providers without rename. A partial copy is never left under the real name.
A leftover temp from an interrupted write is installed (if today's file is gone) or deleted (if it survived) on the next write.
Checks
flutter analyze: no issues
flutter test: all 39 pass (temp name added to the "ignored names" test)
flutter build apk --debug: builds
⚠️ SAF behaviour can't be unit tested. Worth one real-phone check: turn on folder backups, trigger a backup twice on the same day, and confirm one dosekeeper-backup-<today>.json with no .tmp.json left behind.
The old write deleted today's backup before the new one was on disk (or
truncated it in place), so a crash or full storage mid-write could lose
the only copy. Now the content goes to a temp document first
(<day>.tmp.json, never listed or pruned), the old file is removed only
once the temp is complete, and the temp is renamed into place, with a
copy fallback for providers that cannot rename. A leftover temp from an
interrupted write is recovered or cleaned up on the next write.

BackupStore.write stages backups in temporary documents, handles leftover temporary documents, and installs completed backups. It updates the last-backup timestamp after successful installation. The newest-first test includes a temporary filename and confirms that it remains excluded from results.

Summary
Temporary backup write and recovery android/app/src/main/kotlin/dev/susiee/dosekeeper/BackupStore.kt, test/backup_test.dart
BackupStore.write stages backup content and handles leftover temporary documents. Installation uses rename or copy, with partial destination cleanup after copy failure. The timestamp updates only after installation succeeds. The test includes a temporary filename and keeps it out of newest-first results.
A crash during backup replacement followed by a reinstall may leave the latest backup unavailable in the normal restore list. The complete temporary file remains in the chosen folder; this known edge case does not otherwise prevent merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 5308b
Staging substantially improves protection against interrupted writes without expanding storage permissions. However, recovery can discard a complete temporary backup after a read failure, and backups interrupted across a date change can remain outside normal recovery and retention.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Recovery conflates unreadability with corruption. parses returns false for any read or parse failure, and write then deletes the leftover temporary document. If that document is the only completed backup, a transient read failure followed by successful deletion destroys the recovery source before replacement content has been staged. A subsequent write failure or interruption can therefore leave no complete copy.
Medium · security · inferred: Recovery and cleanup inspect only the temporary name derived from the backup currently being written. After an interrupted installation crosses a date boundary, subsequent daily writes target different names and do not recover or remove the earlier temporary document. Filename filtering also excludes that document from normal backup selection and pruning. This strands recoverable history and can retain a plaintext medication-and-dose snapshot beyond the normal fourteen-file rotation, unlike the previous dated-file-only write lifecycle.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified persistence risks affect backup data in the user's selected document tree. The inspected change does not grant access to additional trees or introduce a cross-service or network entrypoint.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A party already able to read the selected folder could continue reading an orphan temporary snapshot after dated backups rotate out. The PR changes residual-data lifetime, not the folder access required. Actual access by another party was not demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing application MethodChannel supplies write arguments. Storage authority remains a user-picked folder with persisted read and write grants; document lookup uses exact display-name matching within that tree.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Installation failure is surfaced rather than recorded as success, and pruning does not follow a failed write. These controls contain ordinary failures, but do not protect a recovery source deleted before fresh staging begins.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Separate unreadable, invalid, and validated recovery states before destructive cleanup, and give temporary documents an explicit recovery and retention policy independent of the current date.

Explanation
The title "Make the daily backup write crash-safe" matches the main change. The summary and objectives show that BackupStore.write now writes to a temporary file, deletes the old backup only after the temp is complete, and installs the temp by rename or copy. The title is specific and short, and it names the main goal of the change.

Recover a complete temp before listing restore candidates.
If the process dies after deleting today’s backup but before installing the temp, only the temp remains. After a reinstall, the empty database prevents BackupService._backUp from calling write, so this recovery path does not run. BackupPage._chooseFolder filters out the temp and offers an older backup—or no backup—instead. Recover a validated temp when the picked folder is listed, before selecting the newest restore candidate. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Not fixing in this PR. It needs a crash in the few-millisecond gap between deleting today's file and the rename, and then an uninstall and reinstall before the next backup runs. Even then nothing is lost: the restore offers yesterday's backup (at most one day of changes behind), and the complete .tmp.json stays in the user's folder. Making restore listing recover temps would turn a read into a write for a case this rare.
The temp remains outside the restore list, and an older backup may not exist. Would you like a follow-up issue for this case?

# DoseKeeper — continuation brief
## Prior state (2026-09-20)
### Implemented
- **Backup & restore** (`BackupStore.kt`, `lib/services/backup_*.dart`,
`lib/ui/backup_page.dart`, app-bar backup icon) — built after the 2026-09-24 wipe.
- Where: a folder the **user picks** via the Storage Access Framework (no storage
permission needed). Deliberately not app storage: everything the app owns, including
`getExternalFilesDir()`, dies with an uninstall. The folder's files survive it; only
the folder *permission* is lost, so after a reinstall the user picks it again.
- When: on every Today refresh (open/resume/after any change) -- the DB only changes
while Dart runs, so that's always current. One file per day,
`dosekeeper-backup-YYYY-MM-DD.json`, rewritten through the day; the newest 14 kept,
and pruning only ever touches files matching that exact pattern.
- Format: readable, versioned JSON (`Backup` in `backup_format.dart`); times `HH:mm`,
timestamps ISO-8601 with UTC offset. `decode` validates everything before a restore
is allowed (wrong app, newer format, dangling ids, stored "missed", bad times).
- Safety rules, each for a reason: never auto-write an empty DB (a fresh reinstall
pointed at the old folder must not clobber today's real backup); picking a folder
that already has backups offers to restore first; restore is always confirmed, is
one SQLite transaction, re-ids everything, and first drains native outcomes and
cancels every armed alarm (incl. snoozes) so no orphaned alarm survives it.
- Today screen warns "Backups are off" (no folder / permission gone) and "Automatic
backup failed: …", same pattern as the alarm-path warnings.
- Restore verified on hardware 2026-09-24; see "Earlier on 2026-09-24" for what's left.
