What

Three bugs from a bug hunt on the backup and data code:

  1. Picking the backup folder could overwrite today's backup before you answered "restore?" Returning from the folder picker resumes the app, and the resume ran the automatic backup, writing today's file from the phone's current data while the question was still on screen. BackupService.holdAutomatic now pauses the automatic backup while _chooseFolder runs (lib/services/backup_service.dart, lib/ui/backup_page.dart).
  2. Tapping outside the "This folder has backups" dialog picked the overwrite. A dismissed dialog returned null and fell through to backUp(). It's now barrierDismissible: false.
  3. A dose in the spring-forward gap never rang. 02:30 doesn't exist on that day, so DateTime shifts it; coversSlot compared hour * 60 + minute, saw a different time and deleted the dose as an orphan. It now compares instants built the same way as DoseScheduler.slot (lib/models/medication.dart).

Tests

  • New a dose in the spring-forward gap still matches its slot (test/dst_test.dart). Fails on the old code, passes now (TZ=Europe/Warsaw, like CI).
  • TZ=Europe/Warsaw flutter test: 37 passed. flutter analyze: clean.
  • Not run on a phone. Fixes 1 and 2 are worth one manual try: pick a folder that already has backups and check today's file is untouched until you choose.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Medication schedules now correctly match doses when daylight-saving changes shift scheduled times, including shifts across midnight.
    • Automatic backups pause while a backup folder is being selected. Backups already in progress finish first, and automatic backups resume after selection, including if it is canceled or exits early.
    • Restoring from an existing backup now requires an explicit choice; the prompt cannot be dismissed by tapping outside or using system Back. After declining a restore, you can choose another backup or keep the phone’s data.

…dose

- Choosing the backup folder: the app resume after the picker no longer
writes today's backup before the "restore?" question is answered.
- That question can't be dismissed into the overwrite branch any more;
one of its two buttons has to be the answer.
- A dose inside the spring-forward gap (e.g. 02:30 on the day clocks go
forward) is no longer created and then deleted as an orphan, so it rings.

Walkthrough

Medication slot matching now checks constructed scheduled times on the scheduled date and preceding date. Folder selection holds automatic backups, waits for queued backups, and offers existing backups for restoration.

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related issues

  • Backup folder becomes active before the restore-or-keep choice #30: The issue describes a remaining path that can overwrite today's backup before the restore-or-keep choice is answered. This PR blocks several paths to that outcome, but the issue notes that the folder may still become active if the app is killed or the page closes.

Possibly related PRs

Suggested reviewers: claude

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 62d62

Choosing a backup folder can still end with today's backup being overwritten without an explicit restore-or-keep choice. This happens when reading the newest backup fails, among other edge cases. Close these gaps before merging, or explicitly accept them.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 62d62

The changes improve overwrite protection and preserve doses across daylight-saving transitions. Their impact is limited to the device’s medication data, alarms, and chosen backup folder. Interrupted folder choices are still not durably tracked, but that limitation predates this PR.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected trust path reaches all medications and dose history in one installation, plus the alarms derived from that data—not merely the selected dose or file. A party able to alter a selected backup can influence restored content after user confirmation. Backup writes and pruning operate in the selected folder using recognized backup filenames; this exposure is unchanged.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A pre-existing interruption path remains: after the new folder target is persisted but before the user answers, process loss discards the in-memory hold. With a nonempty local database, a later startup refresh can write today’s backup without recovering the unanswered choice. The empty-snapshot guard mitigates the empty-reinstall case. This PR narrows the original overwrite race rather than introducing or worsening this recovery exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Externally stored backup text passes through JSON, application-tag, format, field, and medication-reference checks before restoration. Destructive replacement requires a separate affirmative confirmation. These are structural validation and user-consent controls; they do not authenticate the backup’s origin, and this trust model predates the PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Database replacement has transactional rollback and fresh-identifier mapping, but alarm operations and document-provider writes are outside that transaction. Native writes can truncate an existing file or delete and recreate it. Those failure-containment boundaries are unchanged; the new hold is coordination, not end-to-end restore or filesystem atomicity.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — As follow-up hardening, persist an unresolved folder-selection decision or stage the new target until explicit acceptance. Automatic writes could then remain blocked across restart until that decision is recovered, rather than relying solely on the process-local hold.

Retry skipped backups when it is safe to write.

A refresh during folder selection can change dose data while backUpQuietly() is held. After picker cancellation or a confirmed restore, the backup can remain stale until another Today refresh.

Retry the skipped backup after these exits. Do not write to a newly selected folder when restore confirmation is canceled or selection fails.

…; DST slot past midnight

From CodeRabbit's review:
- System Back closed the restore dialog with null, which fell through to
overwriting today's backup. PopScope makes a button the only way out.
- A backup queued just before the hold could still land in the new folder.
Choosing a folder now waits for queued backups first.
- Where the spring-forward gap starts at 23:00 (America/Nuuk), a 23:30 slot
lands on the next day and was deleted as an orphan. coversSlot checks
  the day before too.

Skipped: retrying a backup held during the picker; the next Today refresh
backs up anyway.

Preserve the restore choice across restart.

If the process stops after the folder is saved but before the restore choice, holdAutomatic resets. The next Today refresh can overwrite today’s backup when the phone has data.

Persist the pending choice before enabling the selected folder. On restart, recover the choice before allowing automatic backups.

Keep overlapping folder-selection holds active.

If a user leaves the page while it waits for backupsIdle and starts another selection, the first picker call can complete with null and clear the shared flag while the second selection is still active. A resume-triggered backup can then replace today’s file before the restore choice.

Use hold ownership or a reference count so one selection cannot release another selection’s hold.

Stop if the page is disposed during the queue wait.

If the user leaves while a backup is running, the picker can open after the page is disposed. Selecting a folder then skips the restore choice and can replace today’s backup with the phone’s nonempty database.

…d; CI runs the DST test in Nuuk

From CodeRabbit's second review:
- The hold was a flag, so a folder choice ending could release a second one
still in progress. It's a count now.
- Leaving the page while queued backups drain no longer opens the picker
afterwards, which would skip the restore choice.
- CI also runs dst_test.dart with TZ=America/Nuuk, where the slot that crosses
midnight is really tested instead of skipped.

Second CodeRabbit round, fixed in 62c3cf6: the hold is a count now, !mounted after the queue wait, and CI runs dst_test.dart in America/Nuuk too.

Not changing: persist the restore choice across a restart. That only bites if the app is killed while the restore dialog is open. Even then, a freshly reinstalled phone is empty and _backUp skips empty snapshots, and only today's file could be replaced (older days stay). That's not worth a persisted pending-choice state machine.

Prevent backup when the page closes before the restore choice.

If the user leaves while BackupBridge.list() is pending, _chooseFolder skips the dialog and calls backUp(). With a nonempty database, this can replace today’s backup without a choice.

Prevent writes to the selected folder until the choice is resolved. A mounted check alone is not sufficient because the selected folder remains active for later automatic backups.

Update _chooseFolder so a pending BackupBridge.list() result cannot trigger
backUp() after the page closes, and ensure the selected folder is not eligible
for later automatic backups until the restore choice is explicitly resolved. A
mounted check alone does not satisfy this; preserve the backup-disabled state
after the page is left.

Comment thread lib/ui/backup_page.dart Resolved

From CodeRabbit's third review:
- Cancelling the restore's own confirmation went on as if the folder was
chosen without an answer. It now comes back to the restore-or-keep choice.
- Leaving the page before that choice could be shown fell through to backing
up over today's file. Without an answer, nothing is written now.

Third CodeRabbit round, fixed in 62d62ff: cancelling the restore's confirmation goes back to the restore-or-keep choice, and with no answer nothing is written. The remaining gap (the folder becomes active before the answer, e.g. the app is killed mid-dialog) needs a two-phase pick with native changes, so it's tracked in #30 instead of growing this PR.

Handle backup read failures before releasing the hold.

If the newest backup cannot be read or decoded, the folder flow exits without a restore or “Keep” choice. The folder remains active. A later automatic backup can overwrite today’s file or prune an older backup.

Keep automatic backups paused while the user resolves the error, and let the user select an older backup or explicitly choose “Keep.”

On handle backup read failures before releasing the hold: not changing it here. Nothing can be lost on that path. An automatic backup only writes today's file. If the newest backup in the folder is unreadable and it's today's, replacing it loses nothing, and if it's from an earlier day it isn't touched. Pruning is the normal keep-the-last-N-days rule. The underlying issue (the folder is active before the user answers) is #30, which would cover this path too.
