[Question/Help] WARNING - 1 file(s) failed to move to array #232
Hi everyone,
i have 1 file that is keeping triggering the warning that PlexCache is not able to move it back on the array, but if i check on the array the file already exist, in both .plexcached and not.
How should i handle this ? should i delete the .mkv or do something on the PlexCache Dashboard?

Nothing is actually failing here, and you don't need to delete anything. Please don't delete that .mkv. If you're looking through /mnt/user, that's the cached copy (the user share shows cached files at their original path). The .plexcached file is the real array backup.
What the log shows is two parts of the run disagreeing. One step decided the movie was no longer needed and queued it to go back to the array. The next step saw it's still on Unicorno's OnDeck or Watchlist and kept it on the cache, which is the right call. The warning just counts that kept file as a failure, so you'll keep seeing it every run until Unicorno finishes the movie or it drops off their list. I'll fix the warning on our side.
To find out why the first step thinks it's no longer needed, could you check a couple of things?
Is this movie pinned? Pinning is a newer feature: under Settings → Cache → Pinned Media you can search for a movie or show and pin it (Recently Added has pin buttons too), and PlexCache keeps it on the cache regardless of OnDeck or Watchlist. The list there shows anything currently pinned. If you've never used it, the answer is no.
Do you have OnDeck or Watchlist retention set under Settings → Cache?
Could you run once with verbose logging and paste any lines that mention this title, especially ones starting with "Movie still needed" or "Media no longer needed"? The debug log would help a lot in pinning down the mismatch.
Thanks, that log pins it down. The two retention lines aren't the issue. The 16h one is just the minimum time a file stays on the cache, and once that passes it stops holding the file. The OnDeck line is the one that matters, and it's correctly keeping the movie for Unicorno.
The actual cause is the year folders (Film/2012/...). When PlexCache decides what to move back, it falls back to guessing from the folder names for this file, and it reads a numbers-only folder like 2012 as a TV season. So it ends up thinking this is "Film, season 2012" and decides it's no longer needed. The next step checks the actual OnDeck list, sees Unicorno still has it, and keeps it. That's why you get the warning every run with nothing actually wrong.
The same mix-up can also work the other way: other movies in year folders might be kept on the cache after they've been watched, as long as some other movie in those folders is still on someone's OnDeck or Watchlist. Nothing gets lost either way, it's just making the wrong keep/move decision.
I'll fix the lookup so it uses Plex's own info for the file rather than guessing from folder names, and fix the warning. I'll post here when it's ready to try. No need to change your folder layout.

The fix is merged (#233). It'll be in the :dev image once the current build finishes, or in the next release if you'd rather wait for that. Once you're on it, the "failed to move to array" warning for L'era glaciale 4 should stop, and any watched movies in your year folders that were being held on cache should go back to the array on the next run. Let me know how it goes.
Thanks, i will wait for the :dev image to be finished and test it right away.
Edit. Tested the :dev
L'era glaciale now is not "moved anymore" seems is not watching the "hours" but the days i have this line only 07:41:11 - DEBUG - OnDeck retention: L'era glaciale 4 - Continenti alla deriva (2012) [IT+EN] [Bluray-1080p x265] [DTS 5.1].mkv kept alive by Unicorno (13.4 days <= 14.0 days)

The L'era glaciale line is the OnDeck Retention setting (Settings → Cache). You have it at 14 days, so once Unicorno's entry passes 14 days it'll go back to the array on the next run. If you want it shorter, lower that value.
The "Could not resolve disk path" line is just debug noise. Before restoring, PlexCache tries to work out which physical disk (/mnt/disk1, /mnt/disk2...) the file is on so it can check free space there. The container doesn't have those mounted, so it falls back to checking through /mnt/user0, which is what the "unknown disk" line after it means. Nothing wrong with your config, and as you saw the file still moves fine.

Thanks Brandon.
So is not pinned
for the verbose log i have
One that says that file retention period is expired but another in days that is not could be this the problem ?

Glad it's working. Both of those are expected.
