- Around line 179-182: Update shell_observed to safely handle null tool_calls,
null function values, and non-dictionary call entries by guarding call access
and defaulting missing collections or functions to empty values while preserving
apollo_sh detection.
Review comments at @src/ai.rs:
- Around line 437-446: Update compact_tool_history so it preserves every tool
message after the most recent assistant message, rather than only the final tool
message; use the last assistant position to define the uncut range and continue
truncating only older tool results.
Review comments at @src/pipe.rs:
- Around line 665-684: Update the result handling after the reviewer loop in the
non-routed path: preserve the existing error return when
crate::routing::enabled(a) is true, but return a structured failed review with
ok false and a non-empty issues entry when no usable result exists in default
mode so the job returns to the fixer instead of being dropped. Keep successful
result handling unchanged.
- Around line 800-804: Make the diagnosis review best-effort in the repair loop:
replace the propagating review(...).await? calls near the verification-feedback
handling with explicit result handling that appends successful diagnoses,
preserves X::Drop propagation, and reports other failures as unavailable without
aborting the loop. Apply this consistently to both diagnosis call sites, and
ensure diagnosis reviews do not become approving last_review entries or staged
lessons for already-rejected candidates.
- Around line 1634-1639: Ensure the CI slot is always released when go is
cancelled by the 1800-second timeout by adding an RAII drop guard around slot
acquisition in ci, releasing the corresponding host via unslot. In the timeout
branch surrounding go, also load the job with a.db.jg(id) and await clean for it
after marking the job dropped and idling the lane.
Review comments at @src/quality.rs:
- Around line 111-122: Update the result handling in check() so verdict()
marker-integrity errors—"duplicate acceptance result" and errors beginning with
"missing or unexpected named acceptance results"—return X::E with an
infrastructure-failure message. Preserve candidate rejection feedback for other
errors, including nonzero exits and candidate compile/import failures; do not
classify every nonzero exit or exit 124 as infrastructure failure.
Review comments at @src/routing.rs:
- Around line 57-58: Update the routing event key construction near the existing
key format to include a per-event unique component, such as a timestamp or
random nonce, so repeated review, repro, ask, and no-job events cannot overwrite
prior records. Preserve the existing job, role, and attempt components; update
any exact-key readers to retrieve records by the resulting routing-key prefix.
Review comments at @src/sh.rs:
- Around line 132-138: Update the environment-secret filtering around the run
path so API-key credentials remain available to CLI backends: restrict removal
of *_API_KEY and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to worker subprocess execution, or
preserve and re-inject the credentials required by the cc and codex paths. Keep
provider/controller secrets excluded from worker environments.
- Around line 363-364: Update the timeout handling around pilot and t so CI,
repository setup, package installation, and MCP sh commands are not capped at
180 seconds; retain the 180-second cap only for model tool calls if that remains
the intended policy. Also update the MCP sh tool description to state the
effective timeout limit.
- Around line 153-155: Restrict the post-reap ProcessGroup cleanup guard to Unix
builds by conditionally defining its struct, Drop implementation, and
_process_group binding in run. Leave the timeout path’s explicit kill behavior
unchanged, and avoid installing the guard on Windows.
- Around line 368-373: Make pilot-mode timeout handling portable in the command
construction and existing to() helper: use a worker-side timeout only when the
resolved executable is confirmed to be GNU coreutils timeout, avoiding Windows
timeout.exe and unsupported macOS implementations; otherwise retain the outer
run timeout fallback without silently removing enforcement. Preserve bash -s
execution and update the affected unconditional large-script test behavior as
needed for platforms lacking GNU timeout.
Review comments at @src/web.rs:
- Around line 462-465: The repst response currently exposes private diffs,
proof, results, review data, lessons, and routing records, and is expanded by
/v1/reports. Update the response construction in the repst function to return
only summary fields: status, acceptance ok, and routing models; remove the
detail, diff, proof, result, review, lessons, and other internal fields from
this public payload. Keep full sensitive data available only through the
authenticated /api/job route or an explicitly scoped equivalent.

…on and tool handling
- Free-route caps (240 s, 24 turns, 3 min sh) apply only to free models, not to the Codex/Claude repair authors or the planner. - Tool results keep head and tail so exit codes and failures stay visible. - Free routes may emit up to 8192 tokens so whole-file writes fit. - A candidate that breaks the frozen verifier's markers is rejected and handed to the next attempt instead of aborting the job. - The author of a candidate is excluded from its review; the acceptance planner defaults to a subscription reviewer, not the free pool. - Default-mode review prompts are unchanged when free-first/quality are off. - timeout kills the whole command group again (no --foreground). - The process-group guard is disarmed once the child is reaped. - Removed the fixed 1800 s deadline that dropped running pipelines. Thanks for this, the free-first idea is good. While reviewing I found a few problems and fixed them directly on this branch in 46a89ef:

Add opt-in free coding authors with subscription review and independent checks
Apollo currently delegates coding work to its configured models. This adds an opt-in route where free-access models attempt reproduction and implementation first, then existing Codex/Claude subscription clients independently review the result or repair exhausted free attempts. Failed checks and review findings are passed to the next attempt; rejected reviews become pending, evidence-linked lesson records rather than automatically trusted instructions.
The default behavior remains disabled unless
APOLLO_OFFICE_FREE_FIRST=1is set. Free API routes require explicit, expiring account-level approval confirming billing is disabled. Paid API routes and endpoint overrides are refused in this mode. Existing owner publication approval, budgets and repository controls remain effective. Claude usage limits no longer pause unrelated free-first routes. An optional independent acceptance layer freezes behavioral checks against the original commit before the author starts, rejects import/compile failures as evidence of a bug, and reruns the same checks on the fix. A bounded correction round can repair an invalid verifier using its actual diagnostic. Python setup can use the version declared by CI and model shell commands inherit the prepared project environment.
The optional Linux OpenCode adapter uses the unmodified
jovylle/hermes-opencode-acpclient, a private Unix socket, fresh zero-price metadata and bubblewrap. OpenCode receives no repository mount or inherited provider keys; repository actions return to Apollo's existing worker tools. It needs an existing Hermes-compatible Python runtime/plugin and is documented separately. Model discovery does not automatically certify new models for coding.Validation on Ubuntu:
cargo test --locked: 50 unit tests and 2 end-to-end tests passed; 3 explicitly opt-in live tests skipped. The larger live run has now completed on a real existing project's DST bug: Beam reproduced it and produced partial work, NVIDIA returned a real model/account 404, Mistral's answer was truncated, and Codex repaired the implementation through Apollo worker tools. A separate Codex review accepted the candidate. Independent checks against immutable Git snapshots observed 5/12 fixed-input cases passing on the unchanged original and test-only commit, then 12/12 on the fixed commit. The full project suite passed 89 tests using its CI-declared Python 3.13 runtime; the project's own check script also passed. The owner subsequently approved publication; Apollo itself pushed the exact verified tree and opened lesecuritae/Traviorel#8.
Live Hermes result retrieval also exposed ambiguous model-failure attribution and confusion between system inventory and test runtime. The controller now supplies structured evidence with failures attached to their producing attempt, separate test/check counts, and bounded actual CI output for new runs. Missing historical evidence remains null.
Free-model success is task/account dependent; tests do not imply unlimited provider access or that Beam completed the larger fix alone. No personal deployment profiles, account credentials, execution logs or Hermes-core patches are included.
Usage and constraints:
docs/free-first.md,quality/README.md.Review follow-up: addressed nullable tool-call entries, preservation of the whole latest tool-result batch, malformed default reviews, best-effort diagnoses, cancellation-safe CI capacity, marker-integrity errors, append-only routing records, actual reviewer fallback diagnostics, credential filtering scoped to workers/subscription-only calls, CI/setup versus model-shell timeouts, Unix-only process-group cleanup and GNU timeout detection. Report API tokens now see summaries only; detailed artifacts require the existing owner session at
/api/report. Ubuntu tests above include the new regressions. Windows/macOS behavior is not claimed as live-tested.
