📝 Walkthrough

Adds a GitHub Actions workflow that runs on pushes and pull requests. It configures Python, checks Python files for syntax errors, and runs pytest.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Compile each file to complete the syntax check.

ast.parse() accepts some Python files that cannot run. For example, it accepts a top-level return, which compilation rejects. If pytest does not import that file, this workflow can pass despite invalid Python source. Use compile(p.read_bytes(), str(p), "exec") for each file instead. (docs.python.org)

Thanks for the PR! Adding Python CI is a useful addition. The overall approach looks good, and I have a few suggestions.

1. Syntax validation

CodeRabbit's finding is valid: ast.parse() accepts some code that can't actually compile (e.g. a top-level return). Rather than patching the one-liner, I'd replace it with the built-in compileall:

- name: Validate Python syntax
  run: python -m compileall -q -x '(^|/)(\.git|\.venv|venv)(/|$)' .

This is simpler and recursive.

2. Workflow hardening

  • Permissions: add permissions: contents: read at the top level. This is a read-only job and shouldn't get the default token scope.
  • Triggers: a bare push: plus pull_request: runs the workflow twice for PRs from same-repo branches. Consider push: branches: [master].
