feat: add two secure JWT levels that read the token from the Authorization header (#402) - #826
Adds three secure JWT signature-validation levels: LEVEL_17 (HS256), LEVEL_18 (RS256) and LEVEL_19 (ES256/P-256). Each fixes the algorithm on the server and accepts a single Authorization header, either raw or with a Bearer prefix in any letter case. Missing/repeated headers, forged signatures and malformed tokens are refused without echoing the token. JWTs are never read from query parameters.
HS256 uses its own 256-bit secret generated at startup with SecureRandom. RSA and EC key pairs are generated at startup through JWTUtils.generateKeyPair(algorithm, keySize). All three keys stay in memory. The secure levels use their own keys independently of the challenge keystore. The non-static PEM resource location from master is preserved. The new levels never trust a key carried in a JWT header.
All three reuse the existing LEVEL_7 HTML/CSS/JS, and the page behaves the same on all four levels: the token field is editable, the token is sent with doGetAjaxCall, responses are rendered as text, and the variant label marks the secure levels. LEVEL_7 keeps its vulnerable validation behavior. VulnerableApp-facade#130 must be merged first: without its optional GET headers argument the facade sends no Authorization header, so LEVEL_7, 17, 18 and 19 fail there.
Browser checks on c0f7c87 in the original UI and in the facade Docker image with the GlobalUtility.js from fix: support custom headers in shared GET helper VulnerableApp-facade#130: fetched tokens verify on LEVEL_7/17/18/19; tokens with surrounding whitespace or a lowercase bearer prefix verify, and a changed signature or an empty value is refused on all secure levels.
All 20 moved JWT SAST ground-truth rows still identify the same source statements; ExpectedIssuesAlignmentTest passes.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added three JWT challenge levels for Authorization-header tokens signed with HMAC, RSA, or elliptic-curve keys.
Each level supports fetching and verifying tokens and includes guidance and challenges for testing token validation.
Added an editable token field for submission and verification, with support for raw and Bearer-prefixed tokens.
Bug Fixes
Secure validation rejects missing or repeated Authorization headers, invalid signatures, and tokens whose declared algorithm does not match the expected algorithm.
…ation header (SasanLabs#402)
LEVEL_17 verifies HS256 tokens with the strong key and LEVEL_18 verifies
RS256 tokens. Both fix the algorithm on the server, never use a key carried
in the token header, report malformed tokens as invalid, and never echo a
refused token back. A request with no Authorization header, or with more than
one, is refused.
LEVEL_18 signs with an RSA key pair generated when the application starts.
The RS256 key in sasanlabs.p12 is also served as
static/templates/JWTVulnerability/keys/private_key.pem, so a level that
trusted it would accept tokens signed by anyone who downloads that file.
The tests replay the attack tokens from the JWT challenge cards, confirm each
one is accepted by the level it was written for, and confirm both new levels
refuse it.
The new levels add lines to JWTVulnerability.java and two imports to
JWTValidator.java, which moves every row of expectedIssues.csv that points
into those files: 14 rows by 18 lines and 6 rows by 2 lines.
Each row was moved by the measured offset and then checked by comparing the
statement text at the old line on master with the text at the new line here,
so every row still points at the same statement. ExpectedIssuesAlignmentTest
from SasanLabs#816 passes.

The change adds HMAC, RSA, and EC JWT validation, ES256 signing, and secure JWT levels 17–19. The endpoints use Authorization headers and in-memory keys. The change also updates the JWT verification page and adds tests for validators, key generation, and endpoints.
The validator interface and implementation add HMAC, RSA, and EC validation methods. The token generator adds ES256 signing. JWT utilities add an ES256 token value and key-pair generation. Tests cover valid signatures, algorithm mismatches, malformed and attack tokens, and key generation.
The endpoints issue and validate HS256, RS256, and ES256 tokens from Authorization headers using in-memory keys. Challenge text describes the new levels. Tests cover accepted tokens and rejection cases, including missing or repeated headers, tampering, algorithm mismatches, and tokens signed with other keys.
The page uses an editable textarea and shared AJAX calls to fetch and verify tokens. It displays verification results as text and uses a generic message for invalid responses.
The new secure JWT levels depend on a facade change that is not yet merged. Until it ships, the UI served through the facade will reject valid tokens. LEVEL_7 now accepts edited token input, which can cause server errors. Resolve or explicitly accept both before merging.

Explanation
Issue #402 requests 2–3 secure JWT implementations. The PR adds three secure levels: LEVEL_17 with HS256, LEVEL_18 with RS256, and LEVEL_19 with ES256. The endpoints use server-side in-memory keys and pinned algorithms. Tests cover valid and invalid tokens, header handling, key confusion, and tampering. These changes satisfy the coding requirement in #402.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes support the three secure JWT levels in #402. Validator APIs, key generation, ES256 signing, endpoint wiring, challenge messages, shared UI behavior, and tests directly support the secure implementations. The LEVEL_7 UI changes enable shared-page reuse while retaining vulnerable validation behavior. No unrelated repository change is demonstrated by the available summary.

Against a running instance: fetched a token from each level, verified it, confirmed both refuse the none-alg token from LEVEL_7, a tampered token, no header, and two headers.
LEVEL_18 specifically: refused the HS256/public-key-confusion token from LEVEL_8, and refused a token carrying its own jwk in the header (minted one from LEVEL_9, which does accept it, confirming it's a real forgery, not just a malformed one).
Algorithm pinning is load bearing: removed the JWSAlgorithm.parse(algorithm).equals(...) check in secureRSAValidator and reran the validator/vulnerability tests, exactly one test failed, named for that check. Reverted, not a suggestion to change anything.
ExpectedIssuesAlignmentTest passes on this head, so the SAST row realignment is verified by the project's own mechanism, not just manual counting.
Didn't check: Windows, or a reverse proxy that folds duplicate Authorization headers before this code sees them.
Direct HTTP tests on 999b0f0 returned 200 for one valid token and 401 for separate duplicates or comma-folded tokens, including Bearer and mixed valid/junk values. Multiple values fail the count check; folded values fail token parsing. These tests did not pass through a proxy.

I think making JWT as part of query params with GET request is not a secure way as JWT cna then be logged in reverse proxy like VulnerableApp Facade. Shall we have it as Cookie instead? or Post Request?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
JWTs are now sent through the Authorization header, keeping them out of the request URL. GET remains unchanged; ?fetch=true contains no token. This addresses the URL-logging concern. Both UIs have been verified.

Retained getSingleAuthorizationToken because these levels use headers. It handles the Bearer prefix and rejects missing or repeated Authorization headers.

Use an unpublished signing key for Level 17.
JWTAlgorithmKMS reads this HIGH HS256 key from the committed SymmetricAlgoKeys.json file. Anyone with the repository source can sign a modified HS256 token with that key, and Level 17 will accept its signature. The key’s length does not protect a published secret. Give this secure level a separate secret supplied outside the public source, and use that secret for both signing and verification. (github.com)

Agreed, the array should come out.
It is there because the level template is injected as a module and can only reach global functions, and vulnerableAppEndPointData is never a global in vulnerableApp.js, only a parameter. So the script has nothing to pass to _isSecureVariant.
The click callback already holds that object when it sets vulnerabilityLevelSelected. I will store the variant there and expose it next to getCurrentVulnerabilityLevel, then drop the array. A future secure level will then need no JS change.

I am really confused here, I think there should be no difference in UI if it is secure or unsecured level. Security is a backend feature for JWT. The framework knows if level is secure or not and hence puts a lock 🔒 beside the level like level 17🔒
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
You're right. I misread your earlier comment and moved where the level is detected instead of removing the difference. c0f7c87 removes it: the shared template has no level list and no secure branch, so LEVEL_7, 17, 18 and 19 get the same UI, and the variant lock is the only marker. Details are in the replies on lines 4, 26 and 36.

@vianbas I tested it via UI and it is not working. After clicking fetch, when i click validate the fetched JWT is not valid for all 3 levels. can you please fix it?
Also one issue we have in JWT levels is that all cookie keys/names are same across levels and we need to have different naem for the cookie key else one level interfere with other levels. for that can you please an issue to append level to the cookie name.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I think it accepts "Bearer" prefix but i think we can make it case insensitive bearer prefix instead. you can either create a seperate issue for this as all the levels are having this bug.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, RFC 7235 calls the scheme "a case-insensitive token". Fixed here in cdeebeb, with a lowercase bearer test on level 17.
On a separate issue for the other levels: on master, level 7 is the only level that reads the Authorization header, and it strips no prefix at all. BEARER_PREFIX appears once, its declaration in JWTUtils.java, and nothing reads it. So level 7 does not fail on case, it fails on any prefix: Bearer <token> returns 500, as do an empty or unparsable token and a missing header. That method is unchanged by this PR, but with the token field now editable those inputs can be sent from the page. I can open one issue for level 7's header handling if you want it.

I think there is some misunderstanding why for secure level we say jwt is not valid ? If fetched jwt is passed again level should say it is valid, any other invalid jwt should never becomes valid for secure levels
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The branch was there because the secure levels do not return a rejected token (testLevel17RefusesInvalidToken asserts it), so the shared message would have printed "JWT: null is not valid. Please try again". c0f7c87 uses one message on all four levels that does not echo the token.
The behaviour is what you describe. In the legacy UI, for 17, 18 and 19, the fetched token is valid, and the same token with a changed signature, or an empty value, is not.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not needed, removed in c0f7c87. Whitespace around the token never reaches the validator: in the legacy UI, a token pasted with leading spaces and a trailing newline verifies as valid on 17, 18 and 19, and a raw request to 17 with leading spaces and a trailing tab returns 200.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Removed in c0f7c87. The field is now editable on all four levels and, as on LEVEL_7 before, appears after Fetch.
The note is gone too. Its text was LEVEL_7's ("same as its previous level", "clear the cookies"), and LEVEL_7's challenge card already says the token goes in the Authorization header. The one thing the card does not carry is the note's reason for the level, that scanners rarely inject into that header.
On the fetched token failing in the UI: reproduced. The facade's doGetAjaxCall on main takes three arguments and ignores the headers map, so the Authorization header is never sent and levels 17, 18 and 19 answer 401. LEVEL_7 breaks there too, though it works there on master: its template now uses the same helper, and level 7 answers 500 without the header. I reproduced it with the facade Docker image in front of this branch; the image's GlobalUtility.js is identical to main. The legacy UI passes the headers, so it works there.
SasanLabs/VulnerableApp-facade#130 adds the parameter. With its GlobalUtility.js in the same image, the fetched token is valid on 7, 17, 18 and 19. So this PR has to wait for that one, and merging that one first is safe (details below). If you would rather not tie them together, I can send the token from a request built in the template instead.
The facade page loads GlobalUtility.js, not vulnerableApp.js. Across this repo, the facade, VulnerableApp-jsp, VulnerableApp-php and llmforge, the only existing calls that can pass a header to doGetAjaxCall are in CachePoisoning levels 3 and 5 (X-Forwarded-Host); the other eight CachePoisoning calls pass {}, and the other apps do not call it. Today the facade never sends that header, so the level 3 attack does not work there. With the change, both levels behave as in the legacy UI: level 3's poisoned response reaches the victim request, level 5's does not. Measured twice on master with the facade image.

Closes #402.
Adds three secure JWT signature-validation levels: LEVEL_17 (HS256), LEVEL_18 (RS256) and LEVEL_19 (ES256/P-256). Each fixes the algorithm on the server and accepts a single Authorization header, either raw or with a
Bearerprefix in any letter case. Missing/repeated headers, forged signatures and malformed tokens are refused without echoing the token. JWTs are never read from query parameters.HS256 uses its own 256-bit secret generated at startup with
SecureRandom. RSA and EC key pairs are generated at startup throughJWTUtils.generateKeyPair(algorithm, keySize). All three keys stay in memory. The secure levels use their own keys independently of the challenge keystore. The non-static PEM resource location from master is preserved. The new levels never trust a key carried in a JWT header. All three reuse the existing LEVEL_7 HTML/CSS/JS, and the page behaves the same on all four levels: the token field is editable, the token is sent with
