wally openwork -m <model> opens the OpenWork desktop app (different-ai/openwork) with every RunAnywhere model in its model picker.

How it works: wally builds an opencode config and hands it to the app in OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT. OpenWork passes its environment to the opencode 1.18.33 engine it bundles, and that engine merges the variable last, after OpenWork's own config file. The hosted catalog goes under runanywhere. A local -m starts the kit server on loopback and adds runanywhere-local beside the hosted list. The launched model is selected.

The app runs as a second instance on a profile under the state dir (openwork/). Its Electron data, runtime DB, server settings, opencode history and workspace all live there, so the user's own OpenWork, opencode history and home folder are never written. The profile is kept between runs.

Two OpenWork defaults are switched off for that profile, both found by running it:

  • A fresh profile sends chats to OpenWork's opencode 2 engine, which gets an allowlisted environment and never sees the provider. OPENWORK_ENGINE_V2_PREVIEW=off and OPENWORK_ENGINE_AUTO_UPGRADE=0 keep chats on the v1 engine.
  • With no workspace list, OpenWork creates ~/OpenWork Chat in the real home. wally writes a list naming its own folder first, using OpenWork's id scheme (ws_ + sha256(path)[:12]).

The provider declares X-RA-Harness: opencode, because the contract has no openwork value yet. On macOS a missing app gets a brew install --cask openwork offer (never npm i openwork, which is a different project). Quitting the app ends the run, and Ctrl-C quits the app. open_code_provider was split out of build_open_code_config so both providers share one builder.

Tested on macOS arm64 with OpenWork 0.18.63:

  • tests/test_wally_openwork.rs: 9 hermetic tests (config, profile env, workspace id, app detection, launch command).
  • tests/local_harness: a stand-in openwork app, signed out and signed in, plus the missing-app path.
  • scripts/test/e2e-openwork.sh (opt-in, WALLY_E2E_OPENWORK=1): real app. 10 hosted models plus 1 local listed and connected, the launched one selected, pong back on runanywhere-local/qwen3-4b-instruct-2507 and runanywhere/glm-5.3-flash, then a clean quit. wally models list --cloud shows 11; the 11th is eve, a decision model kept out on purpose.
  • ctest (6/6), fmt, clippy -D warnings, test ledger, agents sync, versions, sys bindings.
  • Goldens: the new command line shows up in the usual 31 root-list cases, plus help__openwork and help__help__openwork.

Not done:

  • GUI checks by a person (onboarding screen, picker, Ctrl-C, running beside an existing OpenWork).
  • Windows: the install path %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\OpenWork\OpenWork.exe is a guess, and nothing has run there.
  • Linux.
  • The engine still writes its log to the real ~/.local/share/opencode/log, and the user's global ~/.config/opencode providers show up next to ours.

Summary by cubic

Adds wally openwork -m <model>, which opens the OpenWork desktop app with every RunAnywhere model in its model picker. The app runs as a second instance on a private profile so the user's own OpenWork, opencode history, and home folder are never written.

Behavior

  • The provider config goes in OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT: hosted models under runanywhere, a local model starts the kit server and adds runanywhere-local, with the launched model selected. An expired account token is refreshed first and the hosted endpoint passes the image gate.
  • The app is launched from its own executable rather than open, so the profile environment (carrying the account token) reaches the child directly and the app stays wally's child: Ctrl-C reaches it and its exit ends the run.
  • Before the first launch the profile gets a workspace list that names its workspace exactly as OpenWork resolves it (canonicalized, native separators, Windows \\?\ prefix stripped), so no ~/OpenWork Chat is created in the real home.
  • Two OpenWork defaults are switched off so chats stay on the opencode 1.x engine, which reads the variable before OpenWork's own config. XDG_DATA_HOME also moves to the profile, so the engine's log and saved logins stay out of the real home.
  • The app is found by bundle ID on macOS, WALLY_OPENWORK_APP points at any other install, and Linux looks only for OpenWork.AppImage on PATH (a bare openwork is a different npm project). A missing app on macOS offers brew install --cask openwork and never npm i openwork.
  • Quitting the app ends the run; Ctrl-C quits the app.
  • Windows and Linux are not yet verified against a real install.

Nice harness, and most of it checks out, but one blocker before this ships to customers.

Blocker: the account access token is visible in ps for the whole session (macOS).
For a .app bundle, launch_command passes every variable as open -n -W --env NAME=VALUE. That includes OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT, whose hosted provider apiKey is the signed-in user's access_token. open -W stays alive until the app quits, so any local user or process can read the token with ps -axww for the entire run.

Measured on an M5 Max at head 0b48944, using WALLY_OPENWORK_APP pointed at a stand-in .app and checking only for the token's presence, never printing it:

  • wally openwork -m glm-5.3-flash: 1 process (open) has the token in its argv.
  • wally opencode --cloud -m glm-5.3-flash (control): 0. It passes the config through the child's environment, which other users can't read.

Possible fixes, either works:

  1. Write the config to a 0600 file in the profile (e.g. openwork/config/opencode.json) and pass OPENCODE_CONFIG=<path> via --env, so only a path appears in argv. Delete or rewrite it on exit.
  2. Skip open for the bundle and spawn Contents/MacOS/<CFBundleExecutable> directly with .envs(...), as the Executable branch already does.
Either way, a test asserting that launch_command's args never contain the token would lock it in.

Everything else I checked passes (head 0b48944, based on main f8803a0):

  • build OK; ctest 6/6; 629 Rust tests pass, including tests/test_wally_openwork.rs; cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings clean.
  • The open_code_provider split is a pure refactor: OpenCode cloud (glm-5.3-flash) and local (qwen3-4b, tool read) give identical results on main and this PR.
  • With the stand-in app: using glm-5.3-flash, 10 models in the picker, and the profile created under the state dir. Exit 0.
  • No release:* label and versions.toml untouched, so merging won't publish.

Not run here: the real OpenWork app e2e (scripts/test/e2e-openwork.sh), because OpenWork isn't installed on this Mac. I'll run it once the token fix is in.

prepare only creates the workspace list when the path does not exist, so a truncated, stale or invalid existing list is never repaired.

OpenWork may create its default workspace in the real home or open without Wally's selected workspace.

This can occur when: The persistent list exists but is empty after an interrupted write, or names a workspace that is no longer valid.

Unverified finding

The environment disables fresh v2 selection and automatic upgrades but does not visibly change an engine choice already persisted in this reusable profile; a previously selected v2 engine may still omit OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT.

RunAnywhere models disappear from the picker despite launching with -m.

This can occur when: A returning user has switched the OpenWork profile to the v2 engine, or that choice was persisted by an earlier app version.

Unverified finding

Each launch uses the same persistent Electron and runtime profile without an apparent single-instance guard or lock; concurrent wally openwork invocations may share files and database state.

The instances may contend for the runtime database, overwrite profile settings or select the wrong engine or model.

This can occur when: A user launches one local-model OpenWork instance and starts a second wally openwork command before quitting the first.

Quit the OpenWork instance on Ctrl-C even before its PID is stored.

When Ctrl-C arrives before wait_for_new stores the PID, the handler skips instance::quit and calls _exit(130). OpenWork stays open after Wally exits. Store the instance's PID in the handler, or let the watcher thread quit the instance when it finds one.

Possible approach

The handler can look up the new main process itself with instance::main_pids(&bundle).difference(&before).min() and quit it. Alternatively, the watcher thread can check a shutdown flag after wait_for_new returns and call instance::quit on that PID. Verify either approach against the wait_for_new polling interval before merging.

Check the executable identity before Linux discovery accepts a PATH entry.

On Linux, standard_locations() returns dir/openwork and dir/OpenWork.AppImage for every PATH entry, in PATH order. app_at accepts any regular file at those paths and does not check what the program is. If an unrelated openwork executable appears earlier on PATH than the OpenWork app, wally openwork selects it and starts it with wally's OpenWork profile environment. Add an identity check to the Linux candidates, and reject a candidate that fails it. The check must match the packaged desktop app's identity, which this repository does not define.

Scope of the fix

No localized edit is proposed. The repository does not establish how the Linux desktop app identifies itself, such as its AppImage name, a --version output, or its package metadata. A bare-name removal would break a packaged openwork install. The correct check needs that identity.

Ctrl-C does not stop Wally on Windows while OpenWork runs.

On Windows, the OpenWork executable is a GUI-subsystem program. Console Ctrl-C goes only to console-attached processes, so the app does not receive it. start installs a no-op interrupt action with on_interrupt(|| {}) and then waits in status(). Wally keeps waiting after Ctrl-C until the app exits by another route, such as closing its window.

Ending this wait is not a complete fix. run releases the local server endpoint only after start returns, so returning early would stop the server while the app may still run. No child-termination path exists in this code. A fix needs a design decision about how the app is stopped.

Make the shutdown check track the launched engine, not only the OpenWork.app path.

The shutdown check matches the literal bundle name OpenWork.app. wally openwork honors WALLY_OPENWORK_APP, and that override accepts any .app bundle that contains Contents/Info.plist. This script does not unset the variable. A bundle such as OpenWork-Test.app would have its sidecar at OpenWork-Test.app/Contents/Resources/sidecars/opencode. That command path does not contain the literal pattern, so an engine that survives the quit can pass this check.

Probe the registered engine endpoint after the quit, and keep the path check.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

workspace_path silently falls back to the uncanonicalized path after a canonicalization error, although its text determines the selected workspace ID. OpenWork may normalize that path differently.

OpenWork may not select the workspace written by Wally and may open a default workspace instead.

This can occur when: The workspace exists but canonicalization fails transiently or because its path cannot be resolved when preparation runs.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

without_verbatim_prefix retains \\?\UNC\server\share paths. If OpenWork's realpath normalization produces conventional \\server\share text, Wally hashes a different workspace ID.

The configured workspace is not selected when OpenWork starts.

This can occur when: The Windows profile workspace is on a UNC share and canonicalization yields a verbatim UNC path.

Thanks for measuring this. The blocker is fixed in d97f55a, using your option 2: wally starts Contents/MacOS/<CFBundleExecutable> itself and passes the config with .envs(...), so open and its --env arguments are gone. The app is spawned with no arguments at all (program() returns only the executable path), so the token only exists in the child's environment, the same as wally opencode --cloud. Being a direct child also means Ctrl-C reaches the app from the terminal, and the pid tracking went away with open.

76f7d69 covers the valid bot findings:

  • opencode's log and saved logins go to the profile (XDG_DATA_HOME), so prompts no longer land in ~/.local/share/opencode/log
  • a local launch refreshes an expired token before listing hosted models, and routes them through the image gate
  • app_at skips files it can't execute; Linux looks only for OpenWork.AppImage, never a bare openwork
  • the bundle executable is read from CFBundleExecutable
  • app output goes to openwork/openwork.log instead of being dropped
  • UNC paths are spelled the way Node's realpath spells them
  • the e2e checks for an exact pong, only fails on a ~/OpenWork Chat the run itself created, and has a bounded teardown wait
  • openwork now gets the update notice; golden README count, skill wording and stricter unit and harness tests

The Ctrl-C-before-pid finding no longer applies, since that code went away with open.

Verified on macOS arm64 with OpenWork 0.18.63: ctest 6/6, clippy clean, and scripts/test/e2e-openwork.sh passes against the real app. That run lists 10 hosted models plus the local one, gets pong back on runanywhere-local/qwen3-4b-instruct-2507 and on hosted glm-5.3-flash (through the image gate), quits cleanly, and leaves the real opencode log untouched. Windows CI passed on ae608dd; the run for 76f7d69 is in progress.

Restrict the PATH-discovered OpenWork app before it receives the hosted credential.

On Linux, locate_app accepts any executable named OpenWork.AppImage found on PATH, in PATH order. It does not check that the file is the OpenWork app. On a hosted launch, start passes OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT, which contains the account access token, to that process. A file placed earlier in a writable PATH directory receives the token. Launch OpenWork only from a verified install path, or from WALLY_OPENWORK_APP.

Propagate Wally's exit status from the cleanup function.

cleanup never reads the exit status of the background wally openwork process. It returns success once kill -0 stops finding the PID. A nonzero exit from Wally, such as one caused by OpenWork exiting nonzero or crashing after the prompt checks, does not fail the run. The script then runs the sidecar and home-workspace checks and prints ok openwork quit cleanly, then exits 0. We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

File::create(log) creates a log using ordinary file permissions, while the child writes its output there. The profile path alone may not make sensitive app output private.

Another local user can read that information from openwork.log.

This can occur when: A user's state/profile directories are traversable by other local users, their umask permits reading the new file, and OpenWork prints sensitive session information.

Do not truncate the OpenWork log while another instance may still use it.

start() opens <state>/openwork/openwork.log with File::create, which truncates it. A second wally openwork run truncates the file while the first instance still writes to it. The first instance's output is then overwritten or interleaved. Use a per-launch log file name, or open the log without truncation and guard it with a lock.

Review comment at @src/commands/cmd_openwork.rs at line 229:
Update the log-file creation in start() to use a unique per-launch filename so
concurrent OpenWork instances cannot truncate or overwrite each other’s logs.

Detect an already-running OpenWork profile before starting a second child.

A second wally openwork -m <model> on the same profile passes its new provider config only to the new child process. Electron's second-instance event does not carry environment variables, so the running app keeps its old provider settings. run then releases the new endpoint and exits without a message. Check for the running instance and report that the requested model was not applied.

Review comment at @src/commands/cmd_openwork.rs around lines 249 - 254:
Update the OpenWork launch flow around `Command::new(harness::program(app))` to
detect an already-running instance for the same profile before starting a child;
when found, report that the requested model was not applied instead of silently
releasing the new endpoint and exiting.

Reject an override bundle with no executable before model setup.

WALLY_OPENWORK_APP accepts any bundle that has Contents/Info.plist. The executable is not checked. Wally bootstraps the SDK and resolves the model before the launch fails. A bare non-executable override file is rejected during discovery with a clear message. Check the executable returned by program() in app_at, so an incomplete bundle is rejected in the same place.

Review comment at @src/harness/openwork.rs around lines 250 - 252:
Update app_at to validate that the bundle’s executable, as returned by
program(), exists before accepting the OpenWorkApp::Bundle; reject incomplete
override bundles during discovery with a clear message, before model setup.

Approving at 76f7d69. The token blocker is fixed: the app's own executable is spawned directly with .envs(...) and no arguments.

Re-validated on an M5 Max (based on main f8803a0):

  • build OK; cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings clean; ctest 6/6; 629 Rust tests pass.
  • Stand-in .app via WALLY_OPENWORK_APP, hosted (-m glm-5.3-flash) and local (-m qwen3-4b-instruct-2507): 0 processes have the access token in their argv (was 1 at 0b48944). The app gets 0 args, OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT arrives in its environment, XDG_DATA_HOME points into the profile, and a local launch adds runanywhere-local beside the 10 hosted models.
  • OpenCode cloud and local behave the same as on main (the open_code_provider split is behaviour-neutral).
  • CI green on all platforms. No release:* label and versions.toml untouched, so merging won't publish.
  • Real-app e2e: relying on your 07:58Z run against OpenWork 0.18.63 for this head. OpenWork isn't installed on this Mac.

Approve only, no merge from me.
