Summary

  • Gate merged-row sibling substitution in ensure_model_ready so it runs only when -m names the catalog merge key (e.g. lfm-d1-3b), not a backend-specific id or alias (mlx-lfm-d1-3b, lfm-d1-3b-mlx, lfm-d1-3b-gguf).
  • Fixes wally decisions --local -m mlx-lfm-d1-3b quietly scoring with the downloaded GGUF build when MLX was not on disk.
  • Add unit tests for allowed vs disallowed substitution references.

Test plan

  • cargo test --locked --lib commands::model_setup::tests
  • With only lfm-d1-3b (GGUF) downloaded: wally decisions --local -m mlx-lfm-d1-3b --input '…' --ask '…' refuses or prompts to pull MLX (no using the downloaded lfm-d1-3b for mlx-lfm-d1-3b).
  • With only GGUF downloaded: wally decisions --local -m lfm-d1-3b … still runs (merged row behavior).
  • With only MLX downloaded: wally decisions --local -m lfm-d1-3b … still substitutes to the MLX build.

Summary by cubic

Fixes wally decisions silently scoring with the wrong model build when -m names a backend-specific reference like mlx-lfm-d1-3b or lfm-d1-3b-gguf.

Sibling substitution in ensure_model_ready now only runs when -m uses the merged models list row ID (e.g., lfm-d1-3b). Backend-specific IDs and aliases pin one build; if that build is missing, the command now prompts to pull it or errors instead of falling back to another downloaded backend.

Adds unit tests covering allowed and disallowed substitution references.

Written for commit 6c61282. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • References to models in merged catalog rows can use a downloaded sibling build when they resolve to the same catalog entry.
    • Backend-specific model IDs and aliases continue to follow the named model’s pull-or-error behavior, rather than being substituted with a downloaded sibling. This keeps model selection consistent with the reference provided.

Merged-row sibling fallback is for the list id (merge key) only. Asking for
mlx-lfm-d1-3b or a backend alias must pull or error instead of running GGUF
when that sibling happens to be on disk.

Walkthrough

Model setup now checks whether a reference identifies a model’s merged-row canonical ID before attempting downloaded-sibling substitution. Other references continue through the named model’s existing pull-or-error flow.

Changes: Model reference handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gate sibling substitution
src/commands/model_setup.rs
A helper permits substitution only when the reference resolves to the requested model ID, that ID is the merged-row key, and the reference is not a distinct alias. The setup flow checks eligibility before sibling lookup. Tests cover merged-row IDs, backend-specific IDs, and aliases.

One blocker: CI linux fails at cargo clippy (-D warnings). Reproduced locally:

error: this boolean expression can be simplified
   --> src/commands/model_setup.rs:133:5
133 |     !entry.alias.is_some_and(|alias| alias == reference)
    = note: `-D clippy::nonminimal-bool` implied by `-D warnings`

Fix (I checked it locally: clippy clean, commands::model_setup 6/6 pass):

-    !entry.alias.is_some_and(|alias| alias == reference)
+    entry.alias.is_none_or(|alias| alias != reference)

Everything else checks out. I validated head 2865c7a on an M5 Max against main 3e9387f using isolated model stores:

  • build OK; ctest 6/6; 627 Rust tests pass, including both new ones.
  • GGUF only on disk: -m mlx-lfm-d1-3b / -m lfm-d1-3b-mlx used to swap to the GGUF silently on main; now a clean not downloaded … pull it first, exit 1. -m lfm-d1-3b / -m lfm-d1-3b-gguf behave the same as main.
  • MLX only on disk: -m lfm-d1-3b still uses the MLX build, same as main. -m lfm-d1-3b-gguf now refuses instead of swapping.
  • Cloud OpenCode, cloud eve, local lfm3-omni-2b GGUF and local lfm-d1-3b decisions all OK.
  • No release:* label and versions.toml untouched, so merging won't publish.

Nit, non-blocking: the check requires entry.id == merge_key, but the flint row id is only an alias (flint-ud-q4_k_xl / mlx-flint-int4), so -m flint would lose substitution. Nothing reaches that today (only decisions runs offline). Comparing reference == catalog::merge_key_for(resolved_model_id) would cover it.

Push the clippy fix and I'll re-check and approve once CI is green.

Use is_none_or so macOS CI clippy -D warnings passes.

Clippy fix in 6c61282 is exactly the one requested. Re-verified: clippy -D warnings clean locally, the GGUF-only repro still behaves correctly, and CI is green on all platforms (macos, linux, linux-arm64, windows, windows-arm64, distribution). No release:* label, so merging won't publish.

One ctest flake I saw locally, harness::path_reload::tests::bash_finds_a_path_entry_set_only_in_bashrc, also flakes on main 3e9387f (1 of 4 runs) and that file isn't touched here, so it isn't from this PR. Tracking it separately.

Approving; auto-merge (squash) can proceed.
