Why

Our hosted models grade their reasoning by reasoning_effort, but two of the harnesses Wally opens gave customers no way to pick a level:

  • DeepSeek Harness (wally deepseek) showed only "Model: deepseek-v4.1-flash", where DeepSeek's own model shows a second row, "Effort: High".
  • OpenCode offered no effort choice for any of our models.

Root cause

  • dsh draws the Effort row from per-model reasoning metadata. Its llm-pi-ai adapter, which Wally registers our provider with, shows Effort only for a model whose entry declares reasoningEfforts (README: "An adapter without reasoning metadata leaves the Effort row absent"). Wally declared only id, name, input, contextWindow and maxTokens. DeepSeek's own adapter declares off / low / high / max.
  • OpenCode offers effort only through per-model variants, and Wally declared none ({name, limit, cost, modalities, attachment}).

Fix

Both read the console's /v1/models reasoning block (levels, default_level, thinking_off), which Wally already parses. No level list is hard-coded.

  • dsh: each model declares its levels as reasoningEfforts, each sent as itself in reasoning_effort. The route sets compat.supportsDeveloperRole: false, because pi-ai would otherwise send the system prompt as developer to a model that reasons. Two adapter limits shape this:
    • No default. The adapter takes a default only route-wide (reasoning) and refuses a request on any model that lacks that level (MiMo has none). So dsh shows "Provider default" first, sends no level, and the endpoint runs the model's own default_level.
    • No Off. pi-ai sends off's wire value both for Off and when no level is chosen, so declaring off as none would turn thinking off under Provider default.
  • OpenCode: one variant per level (reasoningEffort, which @ai-sdk/openai-compatible sends as reasoning_effort), plus none where thinking_off is true. The model's default_level goes in as its model-level options.reasoningEffort, which a chosen variant overrides. OpenCode ignores a #variant in the config's model key, so the default can only go there.
  • Docs: docs/EDITORS.md describes what each harness offers, and adds "Reasoning effort without wally" for customers who point OpenCode, dsh or any OpenAI-compatible client at the API directly.

What each model gets, from production /v1/models today:

model levels default thinking off
glm-5.3-flash low, high, max max yes
deepseek-v4.1-flash low, high, xhigh, max max, high once InferenceInfra #5210 ships (Wally reads whichever is current) yes
muse-spark minimal, low, medium, high, xhigh medium no
mimo-v2.6-pro none (on/off only) none yes: OpenCode none variant; no dsh control

Verification

Capture server (the exact request bodies):

harness selection reasoning_effort sent
OpenCode 2.0.28 #high high
OpenCode 2.0.28 #max max
OpenCode 2.0.28 no variant none (with the model option set: the default)
OpenCode 2.0.28 #none none
dsh 0.1.5-rc.2 Effort low low
dsh 0.1.5-rc.2 Effort xhigh xhigh
dsh 0.1.5-rc.2 Provider default none

The system prompt stays system in every case.

Production, Aman's sign-in, deepseek-v4.1-flash (settled usage rows):

run prompt tokens reasoning tokens
OpenCode #low 13,253 33
OpenCode #max 13,253 42
OpenCode #none 13,228 0

#none turned thinking off: zero reasoning tokens, and a prompt 25 tokens shorter (the thinking render). The dsh headless runs with the effort set through an isolated DSH_HOME settings file answered with thinking on. Before this change, OpenCode refused -m runanywhere/deepseek-v4.1-flash#max with "Variant unavailable".

Tests: two new unit tests. Break test: with each declaration removed, the new test fails (agents.rs:2263, opencode.rs:562); restored, both pass. The full cargo test passes, and cargo fmt --check and clippy -D warnings are clean.

A per-harness matrix (claude-code, claude-desktop, codex, chatgpt, opencode, deepseek, hermes, openclaw, prime-agent: level picker, default, reasoning_effort on the wire, thinking off, images), each column checked live against production, follows as a comment.

Nothing Wally writes outlives the run: OpenCode gets its config through OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT, and dsh a temporary patch.

Summary by cubic

Adds model-specific reasoning effort controls to DeepSeek Harness, OpenCode, OpenClaw, and Claude Code. They previously showed no effort picker (DeepSeek Harness, OpenCode), treated the models as non-reasoning (OpenClaw), or started at another model's default effort (Claude Code); all now read each model's /v1/models reasoning metadata.

  • OpenCode exposes each level as a variant, adds none only when thinking can be disabled, and starts at the model's default level.
  • DeepSeek Harness shows the levels with "Provider default" first and offers no Off, because its adapter treats Off and no selection the same.
  • OpenClaw's /think offers each model's levels, sends none for off where allowed, and sets the model's default unless the user's own config already sets one.
  • Claude Code starts each model at its own default effort via --effort unless the user passes their own; /effort still changes it in the session.
  • Editor docs explain each harness's controls and how to set reasoning effort when connecting to the API directly.

Written for commit efcf3ae. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Reasoning controls are now available in OpenCode, DeepSeek Harness, and OpenClaw when supported by the selected model. OpenCode and OpenClaw reflect model defaults and whether reasoning can be turned off; DeepSeek Harness does not offer an Off option.
    • Claude Code now uses the selected model’s default reasoning effort when no effort is specified.
    • OpenAI-compatible clients can set reasoning effort directly in requests.
  • Documentation
    • The editor guide now covers reasoning controls for OpenCode, DeepSeek Harness, OpenClaw, Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT, Claude Desktop, Hermes, and Prime Agent, plus direct client configuration.

Added after the first push

  • OpenClaw: it took our models not to reason: --thinking high was refused and no reasoning_effort was ever sent. Each model with levels now declares reasoning, compat.supportsReasoningEffort and compat.supportedReasoningEfforts (none first where thinking can be turned off, so /think off sends none). Its default level goes in as agents.defaults.models["runanywhere/<id>"].params.thinking, unless the user's config sets one; that table does not restrict OpenClaw's picker. Verified with OpenClaw 2026.10.4 on Node 24, against the capture server and against production through Wally. Break test included.
  • Claude Code: Wally passes --effort <model's default_level> the way it passes --model. The user's own --effort wins, and /effort still changes the level. Before, every model started at the default of the stand-in Claude model. Verified against a stand-in claude (argv) and with a production run.
  • EDITORS.md names the three tools that keep their own default (Hermes, Claude Desktop, Prime Agent) and the workaround for each.

The per-harness matrix is in the comment below.

…control

dsh's llm-pi-ai adapter draws the Effort row only for a model whose entry
declares reasoningEfforts, so `wally deepseek` showed only "Model" for our
models while DeepSeek's own adapter shows "Effort: High". Each model now
declares its /v1/models levels, sent as themselves in reasoning_effort.
No route default (the adapter takes one for every model and refuses a
request whose model lacks it, e.g. MiMo) and no `off` (pi-ai sends off's
wire value whenever no level is chosen). The route pins the system role,
which pi-ai would otherwise switch to `developer` for a reasoning model.

Verified with dsh 0.1.5-rc.2 against a capture server: low and xhigh
reach the wire as reasoning_effort, Provider default sends none, roles
stay system. Break test: declaration removed, the new test fails at
agents.rs:2263; restored, passes.
OpenCode offers no effort choice for a custom provider's model without
variants. Each model now gets one variant per /v1/models level, a `none`
variant where thinking can be turned off, and the model's default level
as its model-level option, which a chosen variant overrides.

Verified with OpenCode 2.0.28: against a capture server `#high` sends
reasoning_effort high, no variant sends the default, `#none` sends none;
against production #none settled 0 reasoning tokens where #low and #max
settled 33 and 42. Break test: the call removed, the new test fails at
opencode.rs:562; restored, passes.

📝 Walkthrough

Harness configurations and Claude Code launch arguments now use catalog reasoning metadata. The editor guide describes reasoning controls across supported tools and direct configuration for OpenAI-compatible clients.

Changes: Editor reasoning controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
OpenCode reasoning configuration
src/harness/opencode.rs
OpenCode model entries now include variants for supported reasoning levels, include none when thinking can be disabled, and use the catalog default when present. Tests cover generated options and missing metadata.
OpenClaw and DeepSeek reasoning configuration
src/harness/agents.rs
OpenClaw model entries now expose reasoning levels and apply defaults only when no per-model thinking value exists. DeepSeek model entries now include recognized reasoningEfforts, and its provider compatibility settings specify developer-role and reasoning-effort support. Tests cover these configurations.
Claude Code default effort
src/harness/claude_effort.rs, src/commands/cmd_editors.rs
A helper maps catalog reasoning defaults to Claude Code effort values. The launch path supplies that value unless the user provided an effort argument. Tests cover the mappings and missing data.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

OpenClaw took our models not to reason: `--thinking high` was refused
("Use one of: off, ultra") and no reasoning_effort was ever sent. Each
model with levels now declares reasoning, supportsReasoningEffort and its
levels as compat.supportedReasoningEfforts (`none` first where thinking
can be turned off, so /think off sends none), and its default level as
agents.defaults.models["runanywhere/<id>"].params.thinking unless the
person's config already sets one. A model with no levels is unchanged:
with reasoning on and nothing to choose OpenClaw would default it off.

Verified with OpenClaw 2026.10.4 (Node 24): against a capture server the
default sends high, low/xhigh/max themselves, off sends none; against
production through wally, default 166 reasoning tokens, low 105, max 89,
off 0 with the prompt 25 tokens shorter. Break test: the declaration
removed, the new test fails at agents.rs:2381; restored, passes.
The model list's default level, as the nearest level the model's Claude
effort menu has (xhigh on a menu without it is high). None for a model
with no menu or no default.
Claude Code started every model at the default of the Claude model it
takes the entry to be, not the model's own. wally now passes --effort
with the model list's default, as it passes --model: a person's own
--effort wins, and /effort still changes it.

Verified against a stand-in claude: deepseek-v4.1-flash and glm-5.3-flash
get --effort max, muse-spark medium, mimo-v2.6-pro none, and --effort low
of their own is kept. Break test: the lookup neutered, --effort is gone
from the argv; restored, it is back. Production run with no --effort
answered correctly.

Per-harness matrix: before and after this PR

All runs used deepseek-v4.1-flash on production with Aman's sign-in (levels low / high / xhigh / max; default max today, high once InferenceInfra #5210 ships; can turn thinking off; takes images). The prompt asked for the count of integers below 1000 divisible by 3 or 5 but not 15 (answer 400). Reasoning token counts are from the settled usage rows. The capture server shows the exact reasoning_effort each tool sent.

Prime Agent no: Wally declares no reasoning (documented gap) n/a not run: not installed here, and its installer would stop the prime-agent daemons running on this Mac n/a not run

Changed in this PR: OpenCode, DeepSeek Harness, OpenClaw, and Claude Code's default. Every other row is unchanged.

Still open:

  • the DeepSeek Harness Off, an adapter limit;
  • the Hermes and Claude Desktop defaults (documented with workarounds in EDITORS.md);
  • Prime Agent, which needs a box where it can be installed and verified;
  • live checks for the two GUI apps.

Match the injected effort to the CLI model.

When args contains --model <other-id> without --effort, the launch keeps that model but derives --effort from the outer model. Claude Code can therefore receive an effort level for a different model. Omit the injected effort when the user supplies --model, or resolve the effective CLI model before the lookup.
