Native error paths reported different categories for the same rac_result_t, and Electron could lose native operation context and structured error details on the utility-process path. Closes#880, #1122, and #1123; completes the commons follow-up to #779.
Root Cause & Solution
Commons now uses the complete canonical 18-range mapping, with UNSPECIFIED for unmapped and nonnegative results. One declarative commons manifest also generates Python's numeric fallback; Python and Kotlin RAG no longer maintain separate authored range tables.
Electron attaches native sdkError payloads, captures RAG status before freeing buffers, and skips attaching a success payload on the error path. It retains contextual and generic messages, preserves authoritative wire categories (including UNSPECIFIED), and retains serialized details through the actual native-wrapper → utility RPC → caller sequence.
Kotlin RAG reuses SDKException.fromRACResult, including its native-serialization fallback. Python retains raw ABI codes, unknown wire categories, lazy/native-free imports, and explicit I/O factory categorization.
Signed-minimum native codes are widened before negation; their original ABI value is retained even when the positive magnitude cannot fit the proto enum.
Public mapper documentation is corrected. Upstream main is merged, and unrelated README, release-guidance, and streaming-documentation changes are removed from this PR's diff.
Benchmarks & Measurements
No inference-performance claim: this changes failure handling. Python and shared TypeScript categories agree for all 4,001 inputs from -2000 through 2000. Regression coverage checks both signs for every value in each canonical category range, plus gaps, unknown wire categories, contextual messages, raw unmapped ABI codes, and structured RPC metadata.
Testing & Verification
Python: PYTHONPATH=.:/tmp/ra960-metadata /tmp/ra960-venv/bin/python -m pytest tests -q in bindings/python: 497 passed, 23 skipped. Metadata was generated with the project's PEP 517 backend; skips require native binaries/models.
Electron (bindings/electron): npm run build, npm run typecheck, npm test: 242 passed, 0 failed on the prior follow-up; the latest focused error suite passes 21 tests with the -12345 regression. Message-loss, category-fallback, and converted-error RPC regressions were observed failing before their fixes.
Web (bindings/web): npm run typecheck -w packages/core and focused SDKException regression: passed.
React Native (bindings/react-native): @runanywhere/core typecheck and SDKException suite: passed, 17 tests. Full workspace install postinstall could not complete because the host lacks the required CFPropertyList Ruby gem.
Electron native addon C++ changes were not compiled locally; CI/native build remains the verification path for that change.
Kotlin (bindings/kotlin): JAVA_HOME=/tmp/ra960-jdk/Contents/Home ./gradlew ktlintCheck --console=plain: BUILD SUCCESSFUL. testDebugUnitTest is blocked by the host's missing Android SDK.
Python sdist: built with the project backend and inspected to confirm the generated category helper ships. Build-backend freshness checks include the new shared manifest.
git diff --check: passed. Targeted formatting for the serializer and core error test passes. The repository-wide C++ format script reports existing issues in 78 files; unrelated formatting is unchanged.
Safety & Backwards Compatibility
No IDL values, wire fields, or public method signatures change. Python's existing category_for_code import remains available via its generated implementation without requiring native loading or a protobuf runtime. Existing raw ABI codes and explicit category overrides are retained. Electron's serialized payload property is additive; legacy numeric/string errors continue to work.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Error categories are now mapped consistently across SDKs, including clearer handling of unmapped codes.
Structured SDK error details and messages are preserved when errors pass through Electron RPC.
Extreme error-code values, including INT32_MIN, are handled safely and retain their signed code information.
Documentation
Updated error reference material to reflect the shared category ranges and handling of unmapped codes.
Four lessons from cutting v0.20.33, which took four candidates. Two were real
defects that would have shipped an SDK where TTS does not link.
The expensive one: a new NeuRT archive must be added in FOUR places, and three
only fail in a build configuration a dev Mac never produces. Miss the force-load
lists and every native job is green while validate_consumer_flutter dies an hour
later on `Undefined symbol: _g_neurt_tts_ops` -- the engine registers, all CMake
targets compile, only a CONSUMER's link fails. Miss the `#if RAC_NEURT_ROUTABLE`
guard on the vtable entry and the opposite happens: routable builds are fine and
every PR job without NEURUN_TOKEN fails, because the non-routable shell still
references a symbol nothing defines. A machine with the payload staged is
routable and reproduces neither.
This file already notes that prose alone did not stop the checksum-staleness bug
recurring twice, so the archive-list half now has a mechanism:
`neurt_assert_no_unlisted_archives` fails packaging by name. The vtable guard has
none -- hence the instruction to audit all ten slots, and the note that moving
core/third_party/neurt aside reproduces a non-routable build in one step.
Also recorded: reuse_native_web_run_id is same-version-only (the wasm embeds
RAC_VERSION_STRING, and a skipped native_web leaves the candidate unusable for
publish_from_run_id); checksum verification must match by NAME as well as URL,
because a URL-only cross-check validates 9 of 15 sites and reports success; and
`rcli backends --json` against the OSS kit lists no neurt at all, so a
routability check there passes cleanly and proves nothing.

The changes define shared RAC error-category ranges, use them in native and SDK binding conversions, and add overflow-safe handling for INT32_MIN. Electron now carries serialized SDK error details through native errors and RPC.
Core category conversion uses the shared ranges. Error serialization uses 64-bit magnitude handling and maps magnitudes above INT32_MAX to ERROR_CODE_UNKNOWN. Tests check category boundaries, unknown codes, and preservation of signed ABI codes.
The Python generator reads category ranges from the shared manifest, and Python uses the generated mapper. Python exception factories assign categories explicitly, and Kotlin RAG conversion delegates to SDKException.fromRACResult. Tests and documentation reflect these mappings.
Electron structured error transport bindings/electron/native/addon.cpp, bindings/electron/src/errors.ts, bindings/electron/src/process/rpc.ts, bindings/electron/src/process/dispatch.ts, bindings/electron/test/unit/*
The native addon attaches serialized SDK error bytes when conversion succeeds. Electron exceptions retain and decode the bytes, and dispatch includes them in RPC error payloads. Tests cover structured fields and message handling.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main ideas. It has Problem/Motivation, Root Cause & Solution, Benchmarks & Measurements, Testing & Verification, and Safety & Backwards Compatibility sections, and it lists tests run per SDK. It does not use the template's headings. It omits the "Type of Change" checklist, the "Labels" section, the platform-specific testing checkboxes, the "Checklist" section, and the "Screenshots" section. It also does not state whether the Lint and self-review checkboxes were completed, and it does not say whether documentation was updated, though the diff touches documentation files. The description also says Electron native addon C++ changes were not compiled locally. The reviewer comments on the contextual-message guard in errors.ts and the ktlint import-ordering failure in CppBridgeRAG.kt have no reported resolution, and the description does not address them. Because the core content is complete, the check passes, but the template items above should be added.

storage_error() creates ErrorCode.STORAGE_ERROR for local file and download I/O failures, but it omits the category. The constructor now maps omitted categories to ErrorCategory.UNSPECIFIED, so these callers lose the I/O category. Add category=ErrorCategory.IO to this factory.

Add boundary and missing-range cases for category_for_code.
This test checks only interior values. It does not assert the NETWORK range (150–179) or the AUTH range (320–349). Add parametrized first- and last-value cases for every canonical Python range, plus the existing zero and out-of-range cases. The C++ and TypeScript tests call independent implementations and cannot detect a Python-only regression.

category_for_code accepts signed C ABI codes, but this test checks only positive values. Add assertions for negative range endpoints. This prevents a regression that removes the magnitude normalization while all current range tests pass.
Based on learnings, test boundary inputs outside the typical path.

All review feedback is addressed in the latest head, b493d6f. Unknown serialized Python categories now stay UNSPECIFIED, and the tests cover the first and last values of all 18 canonical ranges.
RunanywhereAI/RCLI was renamed to RunanywhereAI/wally, and both install
scripts now install a binary called wally (install.sh:147,154 and
install.ps1:144 on wally main 02d8d06). So every `rcli ...` example in
the README failed for anyone who followed it end to end.
This renames the binary, the repo links and the install URLs in the
quick start, the terminal details section, the SDK and feature table
rows, the OpenAI-compatible server section and the platform table. The
commands and flags themselves are unchanged. wally main still registers
pull (an alias of models download), run with --no-think and --image,
tts, stt, voice, vad, embed, image, lora, serve on port 8080, and a
global --json.
The Homebrew lines are removed. runanywhereai/tap still has only
Formula/rcli.rb (0.20.24, last commit e9c777b on Aug 18), which installs
rcli, not wally, and wally's own README documents only the two install
scripts. The brew line can come back once the tap ships a wally formula.
Left as is on purpose:
- The "RCLI WORKS" string in the transcript is the recorded model output
for that prompt, and it hasn't been re-captured under wally.
- The MetalRT paragraph and the "Real projects" entry describe RCLI as a
MetalRT-powered voice assistant with 40+ system actions. wally's own
AGENTS.md calls MetalRT retired, so a straight rename would make a
claim about wally that I can't back.
Refs RunanywhereAI#886

- `wally serve` is LLM-only and registers /v1/chat/completions and
/v1/models (plus /health), not the Python server's full endpoint set.
- install.sh only ships linux-x86_64; any other Linux arch fails with
"x86_64 only", so drop aarch64 from the requirements table.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
wally 0.6.0 has no top-level `pull`: register_models_aliases() is
defined in cmd_models.cpp but never called from app.cpp, so only the
`models pull` subcommand is reachable.

Thanks for the thorough review @sanchitmonga22 — both issues are fixed in the latest push.
rag_out_to_js: captured buf->status into a local status before calling rac_proto_buffer_free, so the correct error code is passed to make_rac_error regardless of what free resets on the buffer.
make_rac_error: added a code != RAC_SUCCESS guard before calling rac_result_to_proto_error, so a success proto is never attached on the error path and asSDKException() always sees the real failure category.
Both changes are local to the two call sites — no other paths affected.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
asSDKException() passed sdkError directly to fromSerializedSdkError,
which decoded the proto and called SDKException.fromProto — discarding
candidate.message (the contextual string from make_rac_error such as
"ragClear failed: -42") and exposing only the generic code message from
the proto, which is typically empty.
Pass the contextual message to fromSerializedSdkError and use it as a
fallback when proto.message is absent, so operation and backend failure
details remain visible to callers.
Addresses cubic-dev-ai[bot] review comment on RunanywhereAI#960.
Signed-off-by: Sreesanth R <shreesh.exe22@gmail.com>
Fixed in the latest push. fromSerializedSdkError now accepts an optional contextualMessage and sets it on the decoded proto when proto.message is absent. asSDKException passes candidate.message through, so operation details like "ragClear failed: -42" are preserved on the SDKException instead of being dropped.
Thanks for this, @Shreesh-Sree! I checked the mapping itself rather than taking it on trust: I parsed the commons, TS and Python range tables and compared them over -1300..1300 - zero mismatches - and all three now return UNSPECIFIED for an unmapped magnitude (-12345, the core range, anything over 999), exactly as your new core test asserts. The base bug you fixed along the way is real and worth having: rag_out_to_js used to read buf->status after rac_proto_buffer_free had reset it to success.
Two small things to sort out before we merge:
bindings/electron/src/errors.ts:279 - if (contextualMessage && !proto.message) can never be true, so the message you pass in is dropped and commons' generic one wins. populate_sdk_error always sets message from rac_error_message(), which is a switch with 127 literal arms and a default: return "Unknown error code" (core/src/core/rac_error.cpp:22-368) - there is no empty return. Concretely, a RAG query with an empty query string showed "RAGQueryOptions.query is required" before this PR and now shows "Invalid argument" (core/src/features/rag/rac_rag_proto_abi.cpp:992-993), because asSDKException() returns the decoded proto and that takes precedence. The comment above the guard says the opposite of what the code does. Simplest fix: set proto.message = contextualMessage whenever it is present, keeping code/category from the proto - or, if proto-wins is deliberate, drop the branch and correct the comment.
bindings/kotlin/src/main/kotlin/com/runanywhere/sdk/foundation/bridge/extensions/CppBridgeRAG.kt:14-15 - RAGStreamEvent now sits before RAGStatistics, which trips ktlint's import-ordering rule. I reproduced it in the build lane: the clean base passes ./gradlew ktlintCheck --rerun-tasks and the merged head fails with Imports must be ordered in lexicographic order. PR build matrix doesn't trigger on temp/development, so CI would not have caught it. Swapping the two lines restores the base order.
Not blocking: I opened #{issue:1} for the TS SDKs still reporting INTERNAL for magnitudes outside idl/errors.proto, and #{issue:2} to bring the header comment and the proto-ts/AGENTS.md row up to the new contract - you're welcome to pick either up.
Everything else is genuinely good, and the sweep across the binding matrix made this easy to check. Once those two are in we'll take another look.

## The hand-written files, and why codegen skips each one
| File | Why it's hand-written |
|---|---|
| `convenience/errors_category.ts` | The `ErrorCode` → `ErrorCategory` numeric-range table. The fold exists only as C++ control flow (`rac::foundation::rac_result_to_proto_category` in `core/src/foundation/rac_proto_adapters.cpp`), not as proto annotations, so there is nothing for codegen to read. This TS table intentionally covers more ranges (up to 999) than commons currently maps (100–329, falls through to INTERNAL) — do not "fix" it down to match commons; that's a known, deliberately deferred commons gap. |

## TypeScript is the only authoring language
### Verification gates
All three must pass before handoff. `pr-build.yml` `electron-unit` runs them on Linux;
`electron-sdk-ci.yml` re-runs the TypeScript gates on Windows and adds the thin native
matrix (`electron-windows` / `electron-macos`). A green `build` with a red `typecheck`
means a test file is lying about a type.

Problem / Motivation
Native error paths reported different categories for the same
rac_result_t, and Electron could lose native operation context and structured error details on the utility-process path. Closes #880, #1122, and #1123; completes the commons follow-up to #779.Root Cause & Solution
UNSPECIFIEDfor unmapped and nonnegative results. One declarative commons manifest also generates Python's numeric fallback; Python and Kotlin RAG no longer maintain separate authored range tables.sdkErrorpayloads, captures RAG status before freeing buffers, and skips attaching a success payload on the error path. It retains contextual and generic messages, preserves authoritative wire categories (includingUNSPECIFIED), and retains serialized details through the actual native-wrapper → utility RPC → caller sequence.SDKException.fromRACResult, including its native-serialization fallback. Python retains raw ABI codes, unknown wire categories, lazy/native-free imports, and explicit I/O factory categorization.Benchmarks & Measurements

Targeted formatting for the serializer and core error test passes. The repository-wide C++ format script reports existing issues in 78 files; unrelated formatting is unchanged.Safety & Backwards Compatibility
No IDL values, wire fields, or public method signatures change. Python's existing
category_for_codeimport remains available via its generated implementation without requiring native loading or a protobuf runtime. Existing raw ABI codes and explicit category overrides are retained. Electron's serialized payload property is additive; legacy numeric/string errors continue to work.Summary by CodeRabbit
