A long-occupancy job class for the blocking pool - #74
Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe blocking pool now separates bounded and long-lived jobs. Long jobs use independently limited on-demand workers. The API adds cancellation-aware submission and pool statistics. Tests cover isolation, capacity refusal, cancellation, panic handling, shutdown, and worker retirement. Serialize the tests that assert on process-global pool statistics.
pool_stats() reports the shared pool, as the comment on Line 373 states. Cargo runs the tests of one binary on parallel threads. Both new tests are registered in the same binary in crates/turnloop-contract/src/lib.rs and in crates/turnloop-contract/tests/windows.rs.
Two concrete conflicts follow:
occupancy_classes_do_not_starve_each_otherholdspool.threads * 8long workers busy. During that windowlong_jobs_settle_once_on_cancel_panic_and_shutdownwaits at Line 604 forpool_stats().long_busy == 0, which cannot become true. The 30-second deadline then fails the test.- The quiet baseline at Line 374 is not held. Any concurrent test that submits bounded work, for example
shared_pool, makes the absolute assertions at Lines 411-413 fail.
The panic-hook swap at Lines 546-556 is the same class of shared process state and races with other tests in the binary.
Guard both tests with one shared lock so only one of them touches the global pool and the panic hook at a time.

Closes #42. Closes #44.
PoolConfigis fixed process-wide and a job could not say that it would hold itsworker for a long time, so every job was assumed short and CPU-bound and the pool
was a bounded fixed-size thread set with backpressure as its only defence. That is
right for hashing, compression and key derivation. It is wrong for work that holds
a thread for a connection's lifetime — an accept loop, a per-connection
protocol runtime, a synchronous client driven from its own thread — because N of
those saturate an N-thread pool and every later short job is refused or, in
Perry's case, runs inline on the thread that owns the JS heap.
The shape
An occupancy class on the job, not on the pool.
Occupancy::Boundedis the default and is exactly today's behaviour: thefixed worker set, the shared queue,
ResourceLimitwhen that queue is full. Noexisting call site changes.
Occupancy::Longis served by a separate worker set that starts threads ondemand up to
PoolConfig::long_threads_max(default 512, matching tokio'smax_blocking_threads) and retires them again afterPoolConfig::long_idle_timeout(default 10 s), so the set shrinks back to zeroafter a burst.
The long class has no queue. A submission is handed to a parked long worker,
or starts one of its own, or is refused; there is no third outcome. That is
deliberate and is the property that makes the class safe to host
connection-lifetime work on: a long job that waited behind another long job would
deadlock the moment the first waited on the second's progress. An accepted long
job is running, not pending.
What happens at the ceiling
ErrorKind::ResourceLimitfromblocking_with, exactly like a full boundedqueue. The submission never became a job, so no completion is owed and the host
takes the decision it already takes for bounded backpressure: shed load, queue in
its own structures, or run the work inline. A thread the OS refuses to create is
reported as that error instead, on the same path.
long_threads_max: 0disablesthe class.
The ceiling bounds concurrent long jobs, not lifetime ones: a retired worker's
slot is immediately reusable, which the ceiling test asserts.
What the two classes share
The process, the completion port, and the loop's operation table (as every
operation does —
Config::max_operationsbounds sockets, timers and jobstogether). No thread, no queue slot, no reservation. That is why neither can
exhaust the other, and it is the whole mechanism.
One deliberate coupling to name: the first submission of either class starts the
bounded worker set, because the pool is initialised as one unit and that is where
the process-wide
PoolConfigis validated. A long-only host therefore pays forthreadsparked workers. Splitting the lazy init is possible but would separatethe config check from the thing it guards, and that is not worth it for four
parked threads.
Cancellation
Every closure submitted through
blocking_withreceives aCancellation;requested()is true once the job was cancelled or the loop that owns it wasdropped. Nothing interrupts a running worker on any platform, so a long job that
never looks at it never stops — that is the price of hosting one, and it is the
same price tokio's blocking pool charges. Reading loop shutdown off the existing
per-loop
WorkPortclosed flag means shutdown costsDriver::dropnothing new.Exactly-once delivery, both classes
Unchanged and shared: both classes run through the same
run(), which reportsCancelledfor a cancel that won the race, catches the unwind of a panicking joband reports
Err(Other), and pushes exactly oneWorkResultto the port. Thedriver's routing, the
max_operationscredit that keeps the port's queue fromoverflowing, and the stale-completion drop are all untouched. A refused submission
never becomes a job, so it delivers nothing at all.
Tests, and the evidence that they discriminate
occupancy_classes_do_not_starve_each_other(contract; Linux, macOS, Windows)proves it in both directions, and turns on ordering rather than timing — the
starved class's job must complete while the saturating class is still held,
which no amount of CI slowness satisfies by accident:
proven to be running, not queued.
pool_stats()then saysbusy == 0,queued == 0,reserved == 0: not one of them touched the bounded class. Abounded job is submitted and runs to completion before anything releases them.
blockingreturns
ResourceLimit. A long job is then accepted, runs and completes, afterwhich
blockingis asserted to still be refusing — so the long job was notserved by a class that had quietly drained.
Both halves were checked against a sabotaged build that routes
Occupancy::Longto the bounded pool. Direction 1 then fails at "every long job started" (only four
of thirty-two ever run); direction 2 fails with
a long job is accepted while the bounded class refuses: ResourceLimit. Withoutthe sabotage both pass.
long_jobs_settle_once_on_cancel_panic_and_shutdown(contract) covers thedelivery contract: a cancelled long job stops because it observed the request (a
flag set after the wait loop exits proves it returned rather than being killed)
and delivers exactly one
Cancelled; a secondcancelreturns false; a panickinglong job delivers one
Err(Other)and leaves the class usable; a dropped loopreleases its long worker, which the test waits for by flag rather than by sleep.
Three unit tests in
blocking.rsexercise the set's own mechanics with a smallceiling and a 50 ms idle timeout, which the process-wide default configuration
cannot reach: worker reuse and idle retirement, the ceiling refusing rather than
queueing (and the slot being reusable afterwards), and exactly-one-result for a
pre-cancelled and for a panicking job.
Allocation and instruction gates
No steady-state path changed. The additions are relaxed atomic counters on the job
path (
busy, and aqueuedmirror written under the lock that already existed)and one
Arcat pool startup;turn, read, write, timer, accept, UDP, socketoptions, handoff and the reusable file-job path are untouched.
#44, pool introspection
It fitted cleanly, so it is here:
turnloop::pool_stats() -> PoolStatswiththreads,busy,queued,reserved,long_threads,long_busy. Lock-free anddocumented as deliberately stale — each field is read separately and may be
from a slightly different instant. That is the honest contract for the question it
answers ("should I shed load or run this inline?") and it costs a submitting thread
no lock round-trip. The starvation test uses it as an assertion instrument rather
than only as a report, which is what keeps it honest.
For consumers
Additive at every call site:
Loop::blockingis unchanged,Occupancy::BoundedisDefault, and no existing signature moves. The one source-breaking change is thatPoolConfiggained two public fields, so a caller that builds it with anexhaustive struct literal needs
..Default::default(). Nothing in this workspacedoes, and Perry reaches it through
Config { .., ..Config::default() }, soadopting this is a version bump rather than a code change there.
