Typed file operations and filesystem watches on every backend (I06) - #22
Conversation
…S verified) Replace the partial checkpoint with a typed FsRequest surface (open, opendir, close, read/write positional and cursor, sync, truncate, stat/fstat/lstat, readdir pages, mkdir, rmdir, unlink, rename, link, symlink, readlink, realpath, access, chmod, chown, set times, copy file) served by a per-loop service on the shared blocking pool with per-handle FIFOs and queue reservations. Watches use loop-registered native sources: inotify on epoll, EVFILT_VNODE on kqueue, FSEvents for macOS directories. Restore LANE_REPORT.md from main.
…typed files and watches
… completions small Shared WASI filesystem core (bounded in-poll execution, per-handle FIFO, cancellation before execution, preopen-only path resolution) with the 0.2 binding surface. Reads lower directly into caller memory. The Wasmtime runner preopens a fresh /turnloop-fs directory for the contracts.
Every 0.3 filesystem import is lowered with its canonical layout and completed on a private waitable set with the caller's stack context preserved; generated bindings trap in debug on the pinned toolchain (get-directories reproduces it outside turnloop). File bytes stream directly into caller memory, so the typed request allocation gate also holds on 0.3 (release).
…nal cleanup DESIGN D8 now states that typed file requests share the bounded pool on every native platform and that Windows per-handle workers remain only for adopted synchronous handles. §5a.4 lists FSEvents' dispatch queue as an OS-owned thread; §6 and §7.6 describe the fs and watch surface.
…to lane/tl-i06 Conflicts: driver Op keeps both the typed-filesystem flag and I01's native flag; allocations.rs keeps both the filesystem/watch gates and the Windows sync-worker gate.
Requests a backend executes (WASI filesystem, including path requests) are native operations, so queued posts cannot starve them; pool-backed requests remain queued work. Adds a driver regression and a contract that serves path, open and handle requests under a post before every turn (fails without the flag on wasm32-wasip2). Filesystem assertions use os_waits for blocking waits and discovery_polls for zero-timeout polls; the watch no-spin check counts turns without any native call.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughTyped filesystem requests, native and WASI filesystem execution, filesystem watches, bounded event buffering, public filesystem result types, and cross-platform contract tests were added. Native requests use FIFO admission and pooled execution. WASI requests execute during loop polling. ChangesFilesystem runtime
Priority: ➖ Normal Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes Change: Feature Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to The new filesystem API can silently destroy a file's contents when a copy targets the same file, reporting success while the data is gone. Appending to a file on the WASI backend also leaves the file position stale, so a following read or write can operate at the wrong offset, and the documented permission-copying behavior is not provided there. These should be corrected before merging. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

…cations on Windows
…ds through fresh handles Pool workers now report the end of thread startup and the first submission returns only after every worker has started. Startup is asynchronous and, on Windows, std allocates in the new thread (thread name as UTF-16, thread-local destructor list), which overlapped the first measured requests. The Windows watch allocation gate wrote through a long-lived handle, which NTFS does not report to ReadDirectoryChangesW until the handle is flushed or closed. It now appends, flushes and closes a handle per round through CreateFileW with a path prepared before measurement, like the Unix reopen and the watch contract.
…itten On Windows CI the head write was running on a pool thread when close cancelled it: it ran to completion and reported Cancelled, as D8 specifies. The contract now accepts complete or absent content for a cancelled write, never partial.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Update the cursor after an append write.
A::append writes at the file end, but this branch leaves cursor unchanged. If a caller appends to an existing file and then reads with offset: None, the read starts at the stale cursor instead of the post-write file position.
Make Api::append return the resulting file position, or obtain the final size without converting a successful mutation into a failure.

Prevent CopyFile from truncating its source.
When from and to identify the same file and exclusive is false, this target open truncates the file. The subsequent source read returns EOF, so the operation reports success after destroying the source contents. A hard-link alias has the same risk.
Reject identical files before truncation, or stage the copy through a temporary file and replace the destination safely.

Clarify the CopyFile permission contract.
This documentation promises permission copying for every backend. The WASI implementation cannot read or apply mode bits and creates the destination with host-default permissions.
Limit this guarantee to supported native backends, or implement equivalent WASI behavior.
