[None][fix] Kimi-K3: honour the thinking and effort settings of Anthropic and chat requests - #21391
On Kimi-K3, the thinking setting and the effort of a request were ignored when they arrived as the
generic chat-template kwargs, so the prompt was always rendered with thinking on at effort max.
The Anthropic /v1/messages adapter maps thinking to chat_template_kwargs["enable_thinking"]
and output_config.effort to chat_template_kwargs["reasoning_effort"], the keys most chat
templates read. Chat clients written for other models pass the same keys in chat_template_kwargs.
The Kimi-K3 renderer (the checkpoint tokenizer's apply_chat_template) reads thinking and thinking_effort instead, and the kimi_k3 serving extension derived those two only from the
request-level thinking and reasoning_effort fields, which these requests do not set.
Seen with Claude Code, which sends its structured-output side queries with thinking disabled: on
Kimi-K3 they were rendered in thinking mode, and a lower effort had no effect either.
The fix stays inside the kimi_k3 extension (the adapter is model-agnostic):
apply_chat_extensions also derives thinking from a boolean enable_thinking, and thinking_effort from reasoning_effort with the rules it already applies to the
request-level reasoning_effort: low, high and max pass through; none turns thinking
off unless a thinking setting exists; other values such as medium keep the template default;
no effort is derived for a request whose thinking is off. Both rules now share one helper; the
request-level behaviour is unchanged.
Precedence, highest first (written down in the code): thinking / thinking_effort passed by
the client in chat_template_kwargs; the request-level thinking object; the request-level reasoning_effort; the generic enable_thinking / reasoning_effort; the template default.
The keys derived from the generic ones are added to injected_chat_template_kwargs, so the
unused-kwargs guard exempts them when a Jinja chat template is in use, as it does for the
adapter's own keys. Recognized generic reasoning_effort values are also exempt because
the extension consumes them, while the original key remains available to custom templates.
Unrecognized values still require a template consumer.
The merged kwargs also set the kimi_k3 reasoning parser's starting channel and the
guided-decoding placement, so a thinking-off request is parsed as an answer from its first token,
matching its prompt. /v1/messages/count_tokens goes through the same extension step, so its
count follows the same settings.
KimiK3ServingExtension.render_version is now 2, since the extension renders different
prompts: a router on one revision does not forward pre-rendered ids to a worker on the other.
Behaviour change: Kimi-K3 requests that turn thinking off or ask for effort low or high are
now rendered that way; before, they were always rendered with thinking on at effort max.
Requests that ask for max or say nothing render as before.
Not covered here: the Responses API route does not run the serving extension, so on Kimi-K3 a Responses request's reasoning.effort of low or high still renders at the default effort (turning thinking off already works there). That is a separate change.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_kimi_serve_extensions.py (CPU, small inline inputs, already in l0_cpu.yml):
TestKimiGenericThinkingKwargs::test_generic_kwargs_map_to_the_k3_kwargs (11 cases): enable_thinking False/True -> thinking; reasoning_effort low/high/max (in any case) -> thinking_effort; none -> thinking off; medium and a non-bool enable_thinking keep the
template default; no effort when thinking is off; none does not override an explicit enable_thinking.
test_k3_kwargs_win_over_the_generic_ones: the client's thinking / thinking_effort win, and
the recognized generic effort is exempt from unused-key validation.
test_request_fields_win_over_the_generic_kwargs (4 cases): the thinking object (with an
effort, or disabled) and the request-level reasoning_effort (none, high) keep their
precedence.
test_translated_kwargs_are_marked_as_server_injected: the derived keys join the existing injected_chat_template_kwargs.
test_thinking_off_is_parsed_as_an_answer_from_the_start: the kimi_k3 reasoning parser built
from the merged kwargs returns the output as content.
TestKimiAnthropicThinkingControls, through convert_anthropic_request: test_thinking_disabled_turns_k3_thinking_off (also with an effort sent), test_effort_sets_the_k3_effort (low/high/max), and test_applying_the_extension_again_changes_nothing (a router renders, a worker re-applies).
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_render_core.py (uses the Kimi-K3 tokenizer from LLM_MODELS_ROOT and skips without it, like the other Kimi-K3 render tests there):
TestExtensions::test_the_generic_thinking_kwargs_reach_the_kimi_k3_prompt: through render_chat, enable_thinking=False drops the leading effort message and ends the prompt in
the answer channel; reasoning_effort="low" changes only the effort message.
Results (run locally on CPU without the compiled bindings):
The 24 new tests: 17 fail on main and all 24 pass with this change. The 7 that also pass on main
pin what must not change: medium and a non-bool enable_thinking keep the default, the
client's K3 keys and the request-level fields keep their precedence, and re-applying the
extension is a no-op.
Across the 16 CPU serve test files around this code (Anthropic adapter and routes, chat-template
guard, kimi extensions, serving extensions, render core/callers/http/standalone, tool and
reasoning parsers), with the new tests added on both sides: 1979 passed on main and 1996 here;
the remaining failures (tool-parser grammars, Harmony vocabulary, media, one collection error)
come from the environment without compiled bindings and are the same on both. Nothing that
passes on main fails here.
Reverting either translation line makes the new tests fail (12 and 10 failures). The shared
helper moves the request-level reasoning_effort rule unchanged: a local check against main
over 3000 generated requests found no difference for requests without the generic keys.
Review follow-up in 2b48e7dacd: five Jinja cases cover translated effort, none, K3-key precedence, preservation of the original key for custom templates, and rejection of unrecognized unused values. Three cases fail on the previous head; all five pass with the fix. The focused Kimi-extension and rendering suite passes 107 tests (one compiled-grammar case excluded). A broader CPU run passes 173 tests; two media/custom-op failures and one missing Harmony fixture also reproduce with the original extension in the local harness. Focused and commit hooks pass; all-files static typing is unavailable because local mypy is missing. Full CI remains required.

The Kimi-K3 extension maps generic enable_thinking and supported reasoning_effort values to K3 template kwargs. Client-provided K3 kwargs and request-level settings retain precedence. The extension marks translated controls and supported generic effort controls as injected, so Jinja validation accepts controls consumed by the extension. Unsupported effort values remain subject to unused-kwargs validation. render_version is set to 2 because rendering can change. No current review findings were supplied, so severity counts are unavailable. Test results and completion status are unavailable.
QA Engineer Review
Tests cover generic-setting translation, precedence, injected-key tracking, parser behavior, extension reapplication, and rendered prompts. New rendering checks cover supported effort values, preservation of the generic effort for custom templates, and rejection of an unrecognized effort when no template consumes it. Both changed test files are listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the behaviors described.

…opic and chat requests
The Kimi-K3 renderer reads the `thinking` and `thinking_effort`
chat-template kwargs. The Anthropic adapter maps a request's `thinking`
and `output_config.effort` onto `enable_thinking` and `reasoning_effort`,
the keys most chat templates read, and chat clients written for other
models send the same keys. The kimi_k3 serving extension derived the K3
keys only from the request-level `thinking` and `reasoning_effort`
fields, so all of these requests were rendered with the template
defaults: thinking on, effort max.
The extension now also derives `thinking` from a boolean
`enable_thinking`, and `thinking_effort` from `reasoning_effort` with the
rules it already applies to the request-level `reasoning_effort`, at the
lowest precedence: K3 keys passed by the client and the request-level
fields still win. The keys it adds this way are listed as
server-injected, so the unused-kwargs guard exempts them, and the
extension's render_version is bumped because its prompts change.
